Best 1st Submission for a Lanky BJJ White Belt

I got a question from a Lanky BJJ White Belt who is looking to implement his 1st submission option into his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game.
He says he's 6'3 175lbs and is able to survive on the mat and now wants to start working towards being able to submit people.
In this video I share my idea on the fact that your anatomy is going to play a huge role in your BJJ game.
You see in Brazilian Jiujitsu. Our body will often dictate some of the techniques we tend to favor early on.
For me as a White Belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu. I LOVED Kimuras. I have somewhat short arms for my height and I am strong. So I can lock up the position very effectively.
In this video my partner is Chad, who has a nasty Triangle Choke game.
And he naturally favored Triangles and Armbars from the guard from the start of his BJJ training when he was just one of the beginners in our classes.
So my answer is modeled off of Chad and I try to show a different type of Triangle Choke setup that I haven't demonstrated on the channel yet.
If you're a lanky long White Belt, I hope this video is useful for you in finding your initial submission attack. And more than likely you'll favor the Full Guard as your main platform for attack.
Thanks for watching!

Ah I remember being a 6'3 white belt and a team mate told me about a magical thing called spider guard. He showed me this exact technique went to my second competition ever the next day after drilling it and won all 3 matches with it. Use this technique 👍

6'6" 205. Flexible enough to play rubber guard, but nothing beats playing spider/lasso for my body type. Even as a white belt I could stall out and frustrate more advanced players from spider guard. It's when I transition that I get counterd and inevitably smashed for causing such a problem. 😉 Then the sweeps, triangles, armbars, and then transition to DLR...

I’m 6 foot 140 lbs. Triangle is what i’ve landed the most as a white belt followed up by armbar. My coach also suggested that I get good with the arm triangle from side control or mount because of how lanky I am. With long arms you can easily finish someone from side control this way.

6'6" 205. Best advice for lanky guys, learn the Spider and Lasso early and make that the foundation of your game. We are built for playing Guard. When I was a white belt I could frustrate higher belts playing spider/lasso. It's great defense and has tons of attack possibilities once you figure out how not to get smash passed playing open guard styles. Once you can play defense from these positions, your attack game will advance quickly. Get as flexible as you can as well, lots of stretching and yoga, helps everyones game, but Flexible lanky rubber/spider guard players are tricky for a lot of people because you don't see it often. Good Luck!

Hello! I have a question for you. As a white belt, I know it's better to learn as much as you can retain but do you think learning to survive is more important than learning submissions in the beginning? Thanks man! Keep up the great work 🤙🏼
@monkikobytes
@monkikobytes 6 лет назад
Carl Markowski my coach has recommended to me to focus on learning how to control the various positions, surviving in the various positions, and how to escape/progress your position. Being familiar with various submissions can help you know what your opponent needs to get a submission thus helping with survival.
@ethanhough9410
@ethanhough9410 6 лет назад
for sure. My coach actually doesn't allow new people in the gym to do submissions during rolling/positional drilling until they get their first stripe - generally from 3-6 months- unless they are rolling with a blue belt or higher. We still learned them however. That really reinforced my schools core philosophy of position over submission. Once you understand positions, and know how to move from a less-dominant position to a more-dominant position, the next core focus is learning how to CONTROL your opponent within those dominant positions. Next come the submissions. Seems like a long road but you will be so thankful. Strong fundamentals = strong game.
@blackwingdragonmasta
@blackwingdragonmasta 6 лет назад
Without a doubt. I myself have just joined a gym and even though I know some submissions and am learning new ones I don't try to use them in rolling the best things to focus on are your defense your takedowns transitions and maintaining position because these are usually what people neglect in bjj

I have been training both bjj and judo over the past few years, empathising Judo more so recently. As a long skinny white belt that favors the triangle, I feel like the setup you gave was very complicated for a guy that doesn't have a submission yet. I'd rather pushing one arm in between your legs and pull the other, or just grab both wrists and slide your foot inside one arm

I am a white belt, three months into training, with a question on grips using Gi. I've watched another video where you talk about the importance of grip fighting in Gi which I totally get because I get easily submitted after my opponent gets their grips. My question is: When starting the fight from standing or on your knees, where and what should I be gripping and what should I do with the grip? I will often fight off my opponents grips and grip the end of their sleeve, but I don't have a go to move or any real idea of what I'm going to do with that grip. I just know I'm supposed get a grip and I typically try for full guard but either get stuck in half or get put into side control after getting passed. Hope my question makes sense, I am also of similar body type as the viewer whose question your video answered (6'1" 180 lbs, long skinny legs).

SeedsAreUs if you have a willing partner and space to train, that's all you really need, instructions will make you progress much faster. Make sure anyone you train with is committed to keeping everyone safe, if you ever get to an unfamiliar position go slow so no one gets hurt. There's stuff like Gracie University that will walk you through the process, or you can just watch videos like these and drill them until you can connect everything together.

Hi Chew! I want to ask a question regarding Guard Passing. I usually go for knee cut pass but as the bottom guy re guards, he pulls me down by my lapels by my arm pits and I sometimes end up getting jerseyed or the Gi top comes over my head. My instructor tells me it's because I'm not postured enough yet I feel that's quite difficult to do if the bottom guy is significantly stronger. Any advice so I can have a better base and good posture to avoid getting jerseyed. Thanks!

Hey Chewy, I have a question I've been starting to wonder. So I am a white belt, been training for maybe a year now (on and off). I am at a point where I can out-grapple 95% of the whitebelts, whether its passing, escaping, dominant position or submition. Some are obviously harder than others, but many of them that have been training for less than like ~8 months, its like playing with a child, even though they are going all out. And dont get me wrong, i love to roll with people i know i can dominate because it puts me at ease to practice all my techniques and flow through positions, escapes, etc without relying on my strength. On the other hand, there is training with the higher belts, where I will try to do my best and try to get a few tips on my weaknesses from that person, which is also useful.. and lastly there is rolling with someone who is more or less just as "dangerous" as you (if you wanna call it that), where youre kinda doing the best you can, but there is a bit more ego and youre going for the win, and a hell of a lot of more energy is expended. So my question is: which opponent is best for improving my game ? or who should i focus on most ? 1. under my level ? 2. above my level ? 3. at my level ? Currently, when i roll its : ~40% with someone at my level ~40% under my level 20% above my level

I don't have a gym nearby that I can train at but I've wanted to get into BJJ or AJJ for a long time. its always been something I want to do and I've taught myself quite a bit from videos and training with friends to help myself from a self defense standpoint. However I've never received formal training. and I really want to. I'm a college student and an actor so I don't have too much spare time to drive very far for a class. should I continue working things alone and with friends who don't know much about BJJ or AJJ? Or should I just wait it out until I have time and money to invest?

I’m a white belt and I’ve been training mma for 3 months now and I have started to roll in BJJ. My understanding of jiu jitsu isn’t bad but I don’t know what to do at the start of the roll e.g do I stay on my feet, sit into their guard or pull guard? I feel like that is never taught in BJJ
@danasmileyfaceonthebackofm1026
Sean Mc Auley same bro they need to go over the basics better I feel when you go into a class they should have a week of Basics class to show you the basic fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu they always miss that part and it really bothers me.

Good question. In my gym, our intro instructor (high purple belt) actually addressed this exact thing. In intro class, most rolling was done starting on the knees/sitting. He taught us to basically either start passing your opponent's guard or to start playing your open guard. He taught not to waste time wrestling for position from the knees/sitting. As for me, I am a one stripe blue belt, my passing game is strong, my open guard is crappy and needs much work. So when I am rolling with lower lvl people, I let them attack my open guard and when I am rolling with higher belts, I will begin the roll by attacking their guard.

When he flairs his knees out he destabilizes the guys base.If the guy stands up like that it'll also be easy to sweep him.
