Trust the Japanese to take something as simple as making a candle and turning it into the most convoluted process possible.

I think they skipped the part of gluing the boards together as a barrel.

I'm all for preserving tradition but this way of making candles is something that a society does when they are unclear on how to make and use MOLDS for Candles. Making Candles, something that is going to literally be burnt up, in this way is an excessive waste of effort and manpower. to a level bordering on the grotesque. This is something that can be done in a Fraction of the time, and still be considered "hand-made" with everyone being happier and considering the product is going to be burned up, there is no reason for such a labor-intensive way to make such a product. This is a prime example of how progress and innovation was a serious IMPROVEMENT compared to the old way of doing things!

I think you miss the point of the video and the business model. There is a niche market for their candles, thus they have a sustainable business. If the market forces are not there, they can’t continue to operate. It’s that simple. I have a similar type business, that is highly specialized and very few clients. But there are enough to keep the business open. Do you understand better now? It’s called free market economics.

Thank you for your comment. As you say, there is indeed a niche market for their candles.

The West mechanised almost everything where once everything was made by craftsmen and women. Now "Made By Hand" goods are most prized and deliver a premium on price. That is if anyone learned the processes before the old craftsmen passed away which means they are lost. On top of that mechanisation has destroyed many avenues of employment. Lastly why can't we support both?
