Wow Don! You intentionally did what all of us absolutely dread and loathe, multiple times (!) just to show us very thoroughly on camera. You're amazing. Thank you very much. This must have been an aggravating video to shoot! 😸
I was thinking the same thing. to do this twice on purpose. i have invented new words doing this. I have literally just ordered entire new assembly to avoid this task. He makes it look so easy. Love your videos Don. Very detailed and easy to follow for the " non pro" backyard guys
This video was absolutely the best that I have seen so far on RU-vid for my situation as it demonstrated the repair for the recoil starter that I have been working on for my MTD Yard Machines 21" snowblower, circa 2008! The inside hook of the rewind spring was bent exactly like yours; I broke off about an 1" and reformed a new hook; installed it. Again, with the detail that you have shown here, I melted in the notch, finished the assembly, and it is working perfectly! Thanks so much for the video; it would have been extremely difficult for me to have made the repair and modification without this video!
This is why I love RU-vid. Thanks a mill for taking the time to show how this is done. Saved me a massive headache and gave me the confidence to pull my starter apart.
Saved me a trip to the shop and another trip to the store. Darn spring popped out on me twice and I couldn’t pinch it with my hands. Your technique of rolling it back by hand worked. You made it look easy and I thank you.
Wow, I can’t begin to imagine just how many people you helped by making this one particular video. So many of us have experienced this same nightmare like scenario with a rope pull spring and you calmly, patiently took us through multiple options of getting it fixed right!! Thank you so much!👍
Boy, you sure made that look easy! You can tell you’ve had many years of experience. Thank you so much for posting this video. These are the nightmares that happened to all of us every so often. Most of the time the equipment gets thrown away instead of being fixed. You’ve saved us all a huge amount of money and headaches. God bless you. John.
I've watched multiple videos on doing the recoil spring before I found yours, which is by far the most straight-forward and clear instructional I've found. You make is look easy! Thank you.
Don, I was about to throw my old lawnmower away. You replaced that recoil spring so smooth that it calmed me down while I followed your instruction. Thank you for being clear and concise and saving me $500! A Drink is on me!
Great video as always. I've found it easier to rewind a spring by placing a washer on each side in the middel and claming it in a vice. The vice will hold the spring end and allow just enough clearance to rewind the whole thing, on turn at a time. Then use a nail to hold the spring in place until you're ready to install it on the engine. Small pointed vice grips work well on that part of the job.
Perfect. Rope broken and spring bent a little. You not only saved me purchasing a whole new rope unit but countless days on my construction site without power. Thanks so much!!!
Same! I got a cheap Craftsman chainsaw years ago and never opened the box. I went to use it last week and the recoil spring jammed before it even ran. This video saved me from chucking the thing in the garbage and buying something decent.
I'm so glad I found this. I needed to replace the pull cord on my Predator 212. With typical male bravado I dove in eyes wide shut. Before I know it there's no more recoil even though "I swear I didn't touch that part". I took off the 10mm bolt to inspect the error of my ways and nearly caught the coil spring with my teeth. Defeated I retreated to the warmth and found this video. Cannot recommend enough. It's apparent that Don either really knows this equipment or like so many others, he's had it go very very wrong and has had to learn the hard way. In either case, thank you Don. You helped make very short work of that job... which is good since I used the wrong type of rope and get to do it again; it broke off in my hand on the first pull.
Best Repair video I have seen for such a complicated part of a lawnmower great explanation, very simple and clear directions, and my worst nightmare did happen when my spring did uncoil in my hands and had no idea how to repair it until I saw this video great job thank you very much. Look out for mor of your tutorials.
thank you so much! when the return spring popped out while trying to replace a broken starter rope (because of my inexpereince), I thought that I would have to replace the entire reciol assembly. Your video saved the day.
I’m working on an Eskimo auger. I like that you show & work through what goes wrong when the spring gets loose. What can happen in the “ real” world . Good video 😎
i am done repaired with the mis alligned spring to the starter of my generator. Thank You God and thank you Don. Its not necessary now to call a technician. Salamat and Mabuhay from Andy , Philippines
Thank you sharing your techniques, tips, and tricks! About 30 years ago I worked for a small engine repair shop; that was my only experience replacing starter ropes. We had custom tools that fit the wheel, and we would just tension up the wheel and let it suck the rope back in. In my mind I thought "I know how to do this, I don't need this information." But while watching I realized I no longer have access to all those nice, expensive tools the shop had! I haven't needed them for 30 years, and now I know a way to do with out them! Stay safe up there, mon frère!
After watching your video's I now understand why so many other RU-vidrs are suggesting we go yo you donyboy73 channel. You not only show us how to do the fix but explain how and what needs to be done so we're safe and comfortable and we attempt the fix. Thank you Sir.
Thank you for this video! Gave my snowblower a pull today as it's finally snowing down in IL and had the cord snapped immediately (and my son learned some new words). This video walked me through the cord replacement in no time! Thank you!
I used your method 3 for reinstalling the spring and was successful on my first attempt. The day before, I tried coiling the spring but gave up after it unraveled several times. Thank you for your video. My lawnmower equipped with a Briggs and Stratton motor is now starting and running again.
Oh man, I thanked you for the video before I saw you intentionally let it go and recoil it yourself. You maniac! Now I’m going to the garage to try and do it myself. Incredible, you’re the man
Thank you. I'm the least DIY guy out there and could fix my generator because of this. The missus were very impressed and I got a "handyman" role added to our endeavors.
Thank you for the excellent video, Don! That tip about burning the hole saved me from having to untie, unwind, rewind, and retie several times as slack was still a bit short at 4 full winds. This whole process was was tedious as hell to do, but you made it look easy!
Yes indeed. No gimmicks, no dumb lead ins, no annoying jokes, no stupid costumes, no compressor in the background, no wind noise on the microphone, nothing but good camera shots and good easy to understand instructions.
Thank you so much for making this video. I struggle for hours trying to get the spring back into the housing of my Yard Man lawnmower. I didn't melt a notch in the reel. Turned it about 6 or 7 times to draw the cord in. Now, I have to seal a leak in the gas tank. Then I should be back in business. Again, thank you for showing every option. I used the one gradually wrapping the spring manually in the housing because as I tried to hold the spring, it was too difficult to hold in a tight ring to set it in the notch and keep it in the proper diameter.
before watching your video I had never seen the inside of a recoil spring and rope assembly. Mine is a troybilt superbronco rototiller with a MTD engine. I reused the old spring and just followed your video, watching it several times and wearing gloves and safty goggles.. I used a small bit to make the hole instead of burning one and it worked fine.. Excellent video and easy to follow
Thank you! Before watching, I was able to get the spring back in, but I didn't realize that the inner end of the spring had to mate with that notch on the engine. You rock, dude.
Thank you. Mine crapped out tonight and it was the recoil spring. Watched it just uncoil and explode at my feet and I was clueless. Almost tried to recoil it but seemed impossible…now I can just grab another one tomorrow and cut the grass. Much appreciated.
Thanks. Great video. This job has gone wrong more than once for me. Good to know what to do, when it blows up in your face. I wasted 3 hours and had to get help. Maybe next time i wil be able. Thanks again. Really enjoy watching your channel. Keep it up👍
Its stuff like this that I subscribe too channels that real men watch. Things we sometimes don't know right off hand. Mine just broke so yeah my problem was just solved today thanks from Jr
I recently had to do this with a Craftsman pressure washer from 2003. Since only about 1.5" of the spring was broken on the inside end, the spring luckily stayed in place and all I had to do was take a pair of lineman's pliers and bend a hook in the right direction at the broken end and walla, fixed.
