Today we talk about my favorite 35mm film stocks for portraits, I've experimented for the last three years trying to find the best film stock for portraits and I've finally narrowed it down to two. These gave me the most consistent results and covered almost all of the situations I found myself in. Towards the end of this video, I also add in two honorable mentions that I use as "cheaper alternatives". This video is geared towards beginner film photographers who may not know what to look for when selecting a film stock for portraits.

Honorable menitions: Fuji 400h (Amazing colors and tones , just like portra a bit better) Kodak Gold 200 (Cheap but really good) Tmax 400 (Fine grain, bit lower contrast) These are some of my favorites as well that I don’t shoot nearly as much. It’s always fun to experiment with different films. Let me know your favorite film stocks below!

Especially with older cameras that don’t have the fastest shutters i love using color plus 200 however it’s hard to get your hands on sometimes but love the colors and grain

What do you think about Kodak Gold 400 vs 200? I plan to be taking some portraits outside soon, probably during the daytime and plan to use one of these.

Dont you have any other recommendations other than the over-used portra and cinestil? Like something we don't know? Maybe a B/W stock or just something..?

I’m new to film photography, although I’ve been a digital shooter for about 2 years, and something you said kinda confused me. You mentioned about overexposing portra 400 ‘one or two stops two 200 or 100 iso’. I’m my head, that’s under exposing... am I missing something here?
@imnottellingyoumynamedude
@imnottellingyoumynamedude 4 года назад
Okay lets say you set your meter to iso 400 and meter your scene and your settings are f/8 1/125, you meter again at 200 and you get f/5.6 1/125. Rating it at a lower ISO will give you an extra stop of light, since the ISO of film cannot be changed going from f/8 to f/5.6 by setting the ISO on your meter lower you overexpose the film.
@imnottellingyoumynamedude

Hopefully that made sense.

In the process where cinestill removes the remjet the film gets more sensitivity to light, there is a video of someone comparing cinestill 800t with kodak 500t and in the comment section Cinestill talks about this :)
