The lack of HDMI 2.1 was a MAJOR oversight.

I appreciate the video. I recently ordered a XW5000 so I'm looking forward diving in. How was the focus and white-field uniformity on your XW5000? Sony had some sample variance on their last gen projectors so I was curious about the new models. Are you still enjoying it? Thanks

Props to you for dealing with negatives, even while Sony was there! There is a lot of forum bafflement/resentment for the firm that makes the PS5 to not put in hdmi 2.1 in 2022. I've currently got the HW40Es on a second bulb with a 120" vividstorm ALR screen in a dedicated albeit white (renting!) roon and am waiting for these to come in to the country audition. I hear there are delays to firmware and laser dimming has not been activated on review sample.The image I'm sure will be stellar. Also going to look at the Epson 12000b. I have a high end gaming PC that could do UHD resolution at over 80fps in some games but to be honest not sure how many games I'll play with a controller now that RDR2 has been completed! Sony would have my money if it had hdmi 2.1 I think the issue is these laser PJs are going to last users a long time, firms need to get their r&d back but the consumer needs to feel confident going into the future. Sony are also know to 'update' projectors by sometimes only a firm ware tweak or my fear, that next year they release the 2.1 specced version leaving you technologically marooned.

the 120hz refresh rate is about refresh rate smoothness not just input lag. Resolution/definition in motion. It's a night and day difference if you game with a mouse and keyboard especially. Also no HMD 2.1 means there won't be variable refresh rate which would be a massive bonus on a projector. I have the old vpl-vw320es. The one with Sony's crippled hdmi inputs so it won't do 4k 60Hz HDR. It won't even do 4k HDR at 30hz with a PS5. That's a sony projector and a sony PS5 not working together. It's like they don't even test their own products together. It is really annoying how Sony seem to artificially cripple their projector lines. This does look like a worthy upgrade though. I guess I'd get the laser equivalent of a dynamic iris (which mine doesn't have) 4k HDR at 60hz, the new upscaling/dynamic tone mapping features but at the same time lose motorised lens shift and 3D. I'm always refocusing mine, it'll creak and go in or out of focus slightly. Non motorised lens shift makes this almost impossible to do by yourself. Also a laser might last longer than a bulb but how much does a new laser cost? Are they even replaceable? What point (in hours) does a laser reach half life brightness? It's a lot of cheese to lay down for something they've crippled out of the gate. I honestly think I'll be looking at different brands when I upgrade. I like my expensive purchases to at least be half future proofed...............

I was going to get this but I think I'll get a JVC because of this. They're crazy to not have hdmi 2.1

Im exactly in the same boat as you. I have the 320es which is about to get its 2nd bulb after 5 years and 6000hrs! Absolutely baffled at the lack of hdmi 2.1,120hz, VRR on these new models. Can't wait another 2 or so years for the inevitable hdmi 2.1 version of these so going to look elsewhere. Tempted to go for a LG 83 inch C2 oled, but will see if there are any decently specced projectors on the market!

They look awesome! Did you notice a massive difference in brightness or clarity between the two in film mode in a light controlled room? Was the 5000 bright enough for a 150 inch screen? Did you try 3D on the 7000?

I will be looking the 5000ES as upgrade to my 40ES which has been great. I could care less about motorized lens since I literally set my 40es up once 6 years ago and have never had to change it. Hopefully the 5000ES will turn out good and ...looking forward to reviews

Looking forward to a hands-on review testing the projector. I own a Sony HW40Es on its second bulb with a 110" 1.0 gain screen. I'm ready for a 4K upgrade. I use my projector for movies & Bluray/4K discs & streaming services so personally I'm not concerned about gaming features. There has been some rumor's about noticeable flicker in the image on the XW5000 but no official testing or review on that so far.

You described the same situation I am in except my projector is the HW45ES and I have gone through 3 bulbs in 4 years. I am not much of a gamer. Since this comment is some 4 months after you posted yours, did you ever upgrade or are you still rocking the 40ES?

Looks like SONY is ripping off the USA consumer. They want $27,998 for the XW7000 and $11,998.00 for the middle XW6000 here in the USA. Why the hell would they do that?

@NebTheWeb Did you do a conversion of the the different currencies or are you just comparing dollar amounts? I’m just curious.

I think the idea is that the XW5000 costs USD6K (USA) and UKP6K (UK) so the entry level pricing is numerically identical. But the XW7000 costs USD28K (USA) versus only UKP15K (UK)! So, regardless of the exchange rates, the Sony USA pricing of the XW7000 looks like a gouge. For reference, the XW6000 (mid-model) costs USD12K (USA). So compared to the XW6000, the XW7000 would cost (in theory) just 3K (15K - 12K) more than the XW6000 in the UK whereas it costs 16K (28K - 12K) more in the USA. Yikeys! So the XW7000 USA marketing seems extremely out of line and… peculiar (compared to the UK and EU pricing). I wonder what the pricing of the 3x projectors is in Japan?

@@pf5658 Sorry for the late response. I didn't do any conversions, but my question still stands. The previous comment above details exactly what I trying to say in my original comment.

I would imagine the various parts in a motorized lens cost less than $100, but the cost to alter the design of the 5000ES, and put in the production line is what turned Sony away from it. If they had included in their original design I’m guessing it would be less than $500 per unit in total costs (parts, labor, testing , certification etc..)

I’m shocked Sony went so cheap on the specs for the 5000. No 3D. No HDMI 2.1 . No motorized lens .. it’s almost like they made the 5000 obsolete before it even ships.. most consumers buying tv’s are already expecting them to have HDMI 2.1 . Almost all high end tv’s by Samsung, Sony, LG are 3D, HDMI 2.1, and cost less than $4000 for huge screen sizes . The 5000 will likely have to drop very quickly to sell ..my guess is by Jan 1, 2023 it will cost $4500 or less

Why is the 7000es only 15,000 pounds, but is 27,000 US dollars????????
@nebtheweb8885

That is the Europe price. In the US Sony is gouging the consumer for the 7000.
