This is the best 6 seat single engine airplane i have seen yet! The piper malibu. Really love this channel and want to help it continue? Become a Patron for as little as $1 per month: / flyingdoodles
That owner seemed like a genuinely awesome guy. It was cool to see him coach you. He knew you had the skill set, but saw you were a bit rusty and a little nervous to fly his plane. He was a great teacher and you were an excellent student. It is enjoyable and encouraging to see people get back in the saddle again. Hopefully, you'll be able to left seat in your own plane soon.
Great to see 9090J in such great hands. Paul has same enthusiasm for the Malibu that kept my father smiling behind that yoke for 30+ years. Thanks for sharing. It brings back a lot of fond memories.
Thanks Mark. I love that your dad still checks in with me once in a while. He should be coming up on 50 years as an incident free pilot soon. Surely we can find a way to celebrate with him in the left seat.
Awesome plane Paul! If you ever need someone to jump and go for a fly I am your guy! I am about to start working on my pilots license and live in north Texas. I'd love to see this thing!
Mark, I don’t really know you, but know you’re Dad, a long time! What a great man, and happy to hear Paul’s RU-vid comments on Bernie. Soo happy to see 90J’s new home.👍
Michael Lloyd That information is available to the public via the FAA airman database. Paul Dube holds a Private Pilot certificate with Single Engine class and an instrument rating. He also holds a Ground Instructor Certificate, issued in 2013. It is clear from what I’ve seen on this video that he would make an excellent CFI-A. I don’t think it would be difficult for him to obtain the Commercial and CFI certificates if he were motivated to do so.
I also think that if you have been flying your whole life and you reach a certain age, you learned how to cope with things and develop a chill attitude to everything naturally.
The owner is a genuinely awesome guy! Have known him for several years and he’s always that patient and willing to let others fly left seat with him...
Nice work, Bobby. You still got it. Paul was very generous with his plane, his coaching, and bought lunch, too? Too cool! He sounds like a patient guy, taking two years of constant searching (and several aborted attempts) to find that plane. That's a lesson in and of itself! Thanks for sharing.
I took care of that aircraft from 1987 to 2017 when it was sold. I replaced all the de ice boot and replaced 4 engines and alot of other things. It is the best one it there. Your wolcome
I'm sure you love having an aircraft owner who spares no expense to keep his baby in top condition. Four engines in 30 years; did the previous owner fly a lot, or replace engines because he wanted top reliability?
Travis Ryno that’s not really a lot for 30 years. Airplane engines have to be replaced after a few thousand hours. Usually somewhere between 1,500 to 3,000. It’s why airplane ownership is so expensive. Sometimes you can buy a cheap used airplane and spend %50 of your purchase price when it comes time for a new engine a few years later.
Now that’s a competent pilot. Great situational awareness. I liked the casual way he just went into his takeoff briefing while just carrying on conversation. Great crew communication skills as well. He’s the kind of pilot we all want to be someday. Great video!
Another great video! Owner seemed like a genuine nice guy and knew his aircraft very well. Also cool to see you in the left seat for this one! hope to see you flying more in the future!
That brings back memories. I believe this model is the first plane I had an opportunity to ride in, the first for a long-distance flight and the first that we lost all electrical at night on a long flight. Just loads of fun. Back when I was a kid of 18, and a friend and his family wanted to fly from Michigan to Florida and back. I did not realize at the time how nice that plane was.
That took me back to 1980! Got my license fly out of Modern Aero in 1980. {I still call it Red Bird} I haven't flown in many moons, so I now fly with you and others on RU-vid. Thank you sir!!
Cool plane, cool pilot! You know your a good pilot when you have the confidence to coach someone down for their first landing on an unfamiliar airframe. Seems like he would make a good instructor.
I agree with many positive comments about the owner. Talk about letting someone fly in the left seat reminds me of a day back in college when a fellow student invited me and a buddy of mine to go flying. He had just gotten his pilot's license and as a side note, he was a big guy with many added pounds for good measure. My friend was also a big guy, maybe 6'3" 260 lbs. Between the two of them, I think 500 lbs total was a conservative guess. They sat in the front of a typical small high wing airplane, while I sat in the back and cracked up because they were so big their shoulders met. But, after cruising around for a while the new pilot asked my buddy if he wanted to fly the plane and he said yes, of course. He took the controls and after some coaching and settling down, he was able to keep the plane "pretty steady" for over half an hour he was flying it. It was now time to go back to the airport, so the pilot talked the newbie down and I thought he was going to let him get close to the airport then take over. Not the case, he committed to guiding the "pilot" into making a landing! That's when I got a little nervous. I didn't say anything, my friend didn't seem to show any signs of panic, nor did he decline the offer to land the plane either. I think he held his nerves together being an ex-police officer. I remember the airport approach pretty clearly and this happened 50 years ago. Actually, the pilot in "training" kept the airplane on course with not a lot of disturbance, fortunately, there was no wind and the actual pilot was coaching him calmly and correcting him at the same time. From my perspective, as we got close to landing I thought we were going too fast and when we did touch down it was a heavy hit and one bounce before the plane settled down. I thought because of the hard-hit and the passenger payload, we might have popped a tire but that didn't happen. We all shouted out after we got on the ground and I patted my buddy on the back for not killing me. I thought it was a bad idea, to begin with, but a really bad idea to let someone who has never touched a yoke land the damn thing.
While building time, back in the 80’s, I worked at an FBO. A regular customer was a company that flew bodies. We had an old man working there, who was extremely superstitious and would leave work, when he saw the hearse pull in, lol! He had worked there so long, he could get away with leaving I guess, but it terrified him. The also had a 182, and two bigger planes. They offered me a job at one point, flying the 182. Reasoning I didn’t need time that bad, I quickly declined. Thanks to Paul for sharing time with this beautiful Malibu ! I love those airplanes and this is among the nicest ! 🇺🇸🛫
Really good episode, Bobby. Paul is such a cool guy, and he has one of my dream airplanes. The fellow that sold him the plane made the right choice, for sure. His baby is safe with Paul. Plus, *left seat’! Good to see! Also, It was reassuring to see you as nervous as I would have been! I just love the Malibu! Thanks for this one.
Excellent video. This specific plane was awesome. I loved Paul's due diligence in researching and ultimately purchasing this specific aircraft. I know he's extremely proud of his selection. Great flight. The two of you were awesome together. Betcha you had fun!
Now That was a very nice aircraft indeed! It seemed to be a perfect fit for its' owner and he was a lucky man to have found and purchased it from the guy who took very good care of it for all of those early years! Thanks Bernie!
My introduction to private flying was in Larry Grant's 4319M, the first customer delivered '85 Malibu on a family vacation from Watsonville CA to Puerto Vallata ( non stop) 4 adults 1 child. He's the original owner and still flying that great aircraft! Have to agree, the best single engine aircraft! Happy flying!
I'm having Fun binge-watching the last 6 or so, Flying Doodles RU-vid Videos, they're all Great! All of us arm-chair/downtime pilots at home appreciate it. It was good to see you 'Captain Bob' in this Beautiful Malibu Airplane (with a little help from the 'Cool Owner of this Airplane). Thank You and keep up the Great Work, and as always, A Big Thumbs UP!
Awesome! I think you’ve really hit the right amount of questions, information, and interactions with the pilots and their planes! Love this channel. Should have over 100K subscribers!
I'm only 7 minutes in and I love this guy. So calm and clearly so passionate about this plane. His love of this plane and this hobby really pulls me in, I genuinely want to hang out with him.
I love your videos Doodles! The commentary before the flight, narrating, and editing are all great. I wish you mush success and look forward to many more videos!! Cheers
What a great guy. He let you fly his pride and joy from the left seat, and he was an excellent instructor as well. Good landing, and great video. Thanks.
What an incredible piece of machine and man. 30 years on this plane looks amazing. The love and dedication show through from both former and current owners. Thanks for sharing 👍
Personally, I prefer steam gauges, they are just easier for me to read in day VFR. But I looooove a nice glass cockpit, and this certainly checks that box!
I enjoyed this presentation. Quite fond of these aircraft and also enjoy unfolding the versatility of this airframe for new and existing owners seeking recurring training. Thanks for getting the word out there. 9090J is a classic. Michael Hemmingsen, CFI for Legacy Flight Training.
Congratulations on a left seat day. Excellent, even the landing. Paul would make an excellent instructor. With A/C and 15gph the Ma.ibu is excellent. Worth spending two years to locate
Awesome job Bobby! I’m normally a c210 guy for a fast 6 seat. But that’s a nice bird and pressurized! Love these videos, getting to see different makes and models with an owners interview.
I’ve always thought this was the sexiest piston cabin class plane on the ramp. So cool to see the inside and I loved the under belly mount to see how fast it is over the ground. Blazing
I've spent almost 18 months looking for a decent Mooney, but this video revived my long infatuation with the Malibu that I couldn't see myself affording in the early years. I went looking on Tradeaplane and elsewhere after the watching this great video and found some reasonably priced ones that may be do-able with a few partners. Who knows? Maybe the Malibu will eventually edge out my Mooney-lust :D. Nice to see you actually flying from the left seat and for the entire flight, Bobby. You did great! And kudos to the owner as well!
Great video, great airplane and great destination - my wife and I used to fly to Dallas Executive at least a couple times a month to eat at Delta Charlie’s - great food and lots of fun. Keep making these awesome videos, I love them all. Dave from Granbury TX.
Got my private ticket back in the early 80's. Clearly remember the Malibu being featured in/on the front cover of Flying magazine. This plane was an absolute dream for this young wide eyed pilot. Great video and 100% agree with comments regrading the owner.
The owner is a kind and patient pilot. It would be good to take lessons with him. I like his logic about long term savings on fuel which could be set asside for general maintenance of the aircraft.
Excellent video. Really enjoyed seeing you take the PIC position getting some of the groove back. I thought you did a fantastic job, the best part I you have that awesome landing on video. Take care. 🙂
I am a beginner student pilot; on the much "older" side; I wish I have him as the instructor; it would be awesome; very confident, seems very knowledgeable and excellent demeanour
I love this aircraft. I'm shopping for 1st one. Was sold on the SR22. Trained in Piper Cherokee, which led me to this. I'm starting to lean strongly this direction.
Bobby,,,,, it was good to see you behind the yoke! Man you are a pro and and you are smart enough to take pointers from the guy who flys that plane on a regular basis!!! Again great job! I am a private pilot with an instrument rating so I was a good judge of your comfort level!!! You were smooth as silk and your Landing was spot on from were I was sitting!!!! Again , you have been through a lot and you have handled it all like a real man! Great Job and great video!!!!! ALSO GREAT JOB AND CONGRATULATIONS ON SAILING DOODLES NEW CREW,,, GOOD TO MEAGAN BACK ON BOARD , “9/6/2020 “
