update:
10/05 there is a drain on left side of unit that needs to be drained. I did it for the first time and about 2 cups of water came out.
10/30 I took the unit out for the winter, a lot of water drained out, if you're removing yours make sure to drain water first and have towels ready. also the foam piece that is on the window sill was not salvageable...definitely will need a new one next year.
11/04 I noticed the hangers left a dent in my siding. a board across the siding will be beneficial to prevent damage.

Hey there,
In this video I take a look at Soleus Air Conditioner FIRST EVER over the sill air conditioner. This is the 8000 btu unit and retails for around $540. Check out this review to see if it works.

I'm about to buy one of these because I have a room that needs a window A/C and only has one window, and this design will allow the window to be opened on nice days without risk of the unit falling out. That room's window frame also makes installing conventional A/Cs difficult, but it looks like the saddle design should work well with it. Many years ago (I want to say about 30, but I could be off by a few), Panasonic sold a window A/C with a similar design. I think the part inside the house was smaller, but the concept was the same: move the noisy, bulky part outside, leave the less intrusive part inside and keep more of the window usable. I only knew about it because Consumer Reports gave it a good score, particularly for being quiet. I'm guessing it didn't sell well, though, because I don't remember ever seeing one in a store. I would also venture to guess that people didn't understand it, because it didn't look like most window A/Cs, and most people won't buy what they don't understand.

I bought my Soleus in May 2020 and have had it in my bedroom since new. I love that it keeps my room cool in the summer and maintenance has been minimal. I did recently develop an issue regarding the control panel. It seems that the control panel has developed a mind of it's own. It changes the temperature and mode that I set and freezes up. None of the buttons will work and the only way I can control it is through the remote. I called Soleus and they initially said to unplug it for a half hour to let the unit reset. I tried that to no avail. They finally acknowledged that it is a control board failure. They are not serviceable and they can only offer a replacement if the extended warranty was purchased. Unfortunately I did not purchase the extended warranty. It still cools my room but I have to periodically check to see if the temperature and mode has changed on it's own.

Thanks for the video. Panasonic came out with a little better design. CW-800HK. around 1990. L-shape. Water flows out the back into the back tray. No emptying needed. Handle on top. Squirrel fan inside. Very quiet. You would be by impressed. Small visual profile inside. I just bought a Soleus for my friend. He doesnt mind drilling hole in wall for water tube.

Jeff, pleeeeeeeease help me out. This type of AC seems to be the solution for me but I have concerns that maybe you could comment on. I live in an urban setting near NYC and SAFETY and SECURITY can be problems. These are my 2 concerns: 1) Break-Ins, Can the window be secured to deter them? 2) Fire Escape/emergency egress, can escape be done, even with a security feature that I install? Thank you for your knowledgeable point of view, Rosemary

Better you bought the U-shped A/C unit for your sister, the bottom is on one plane, so any water will slide back, make sure there's a drain hole or two at the most rear of the unit. From reviews I've read, this saddle design can accumilate a lot of water on the "inside" part and soak the floor, water obvously cant flow back, a huge design oversight.

Hi Jeff! Thanks for making this video. I have a question I was hoping you could help me with. I own one of these units and when the compressor is running it's buzzing at about 53 dB, much louder than what you recorded. Did you take that noise measurement at 9:30 while the AC's compressor was running? If not, could you tell me how loud the AC is with the compressor running? I'm trying to figure out if my unit is defective, or if it's normal for it to be that noisy. Any help will be much appreciated!

This isn't new. Panasonic had a sill ac in the 80's. I still have and use it. The difference is that the evaporator and blower section is compact, stays level with the sill and doesn't hang and extend down like this Soleus which is the reason for the drainage issue. Just a slight tilt and it drains from the back of the condenser unit. Soleus would have to install a condensate pump to evacuate the water. Bad design.

@@VvexotikavV I used it the entire last summer, and did not notice anything, so I did nothing. This summer, I noticed a little bit of water on the inside pan, as you said. I saw a video of someone using a piece of gauze, tucked on one end in the inside of the pan where there is water (you can use a butter knife to tuck one end of the gauze in the pan), and the other side dangling so that water can drain out. You can use a pan, or any container to put underneath the piece of gauze that's dangling to collect the excess water. But if your tube works, then stick to that. @@Jeffreviews4u I just bought one and I'm struggling with it. I've had it two months and today it starts flashing FL and shuts off. Googled it found out what it means. How do you drain yours? I opened the plastic stopper on the inside on the left hand side and it drains a little bit then stops. But then when I turn it back on it flashes FL again after a couple hours ....it's to the point where I'm keeping it open with a dog bowl under and it's filling it up every couple hours.

Young man, they had saddle mount, low profile window AC units since the 1950s. Not common but they did exist. This Chinese brand is lying in its ads. Still nice machine, but false. Can't comment as to durability of the product or the corporation warranting it.

It is nIce that you can see out your window and it is also nice that the unit is quiet. Here are my concerns. I am in the process of downsizing from a 3,500 SQFT Colonial to a 2,400 SQFT split level. I have had central A/C for the past 60 years and am no-longer a spring chicken. I have a choice of going with free standing units in all of the bedrooms with two larger free standing units in the main rooms or going with units like the one in this video. While louder, the free standing units do NOT need to be moved when winter comes. The units in this video appear to be very heavy and require seasonal removal which in my case will mean setting five of them up in springtime and removing and storing them in the winter which honestly is a daunting task and the purchase cost is outrageous. If I am missing something here, please let me know. Thanks BTW nice video.
@Jeffreviews4u
@Jeffreviews4u 2 года назад
There are pros and cons to both types. The one in this video is heavy and needs to be drained (the frequency depends on humidity levek). The drain hole is on the inside portion of the house. The stand-alone ones, although convenient, in my experience have not been as efficient at cooling a space. Hope this helps in your decision.

@@Jeffreviews4u thank you so much - I measured my window and it is a big window has 2 lock latches on top and is 57 inches long - will this work for me? I also wondered how long that cord was to reach the receptacle because it does not look so long and then I will have to get a three prong outlet as well.

Still not as good as a classic window unit. Reasons, They have to use 2 different motors one for the condensor and one for the evaporator. As a regular window a/c uses one motor to drive both. Also A unit like this requires a sump pump to pump the condensate to the outside. This very well may be incorporated with the blower motor. I don't know I just know it has to pump water to the outside somehow. More complicated and less efficient. . More crap to breakdown. I'm sure it works good for awhile. But unless theres a reason to choose this why?

@MrAtjay
@MrAtjay 2 года назад
Bought one of these two years ago and it is quiet, but installation was a problem. Soleus says the maximum wall thickness is 11 inches. I live in a 120 year old house; the window thickness is exactly 11 inches between the face of the sill on the outside and the face of the stool on the inside. The unit didn't fit--it was too narrow. I had to shave a quarter inch off the sill on the outside to get the unit over the sill. And, because the screw-in levelers aren't recessed into the unit, the actual width over which the unit will fit is closer to nine inches, not 11. I can't use the wall supports; luckily a 2x4 will slide into the gap on the outside and that supports the unit with an outward tilt.
