I will admit I found myself smirking and laughing a little every time you'd ask about "who wrote this music" and also about how great the person playing Hamilton is. All while not realizing the guy who is playing Hamilton is the guy who wrote the show. Lin Manuel Miranda is a musical mastermind and one heck of a performer.

He wrote this after picking up a book to read on the beach! Dudes a genius. You should watch In the heights. He also wrote the musical parts for Moana. During the massive lockdown John Krazinski did a fake feel good news channel and all of the original cast members sang a song for a little girl on zoom because she couldn’t see it in theatres because she was meant to see it but they closed down production. I love this musical so much and as a Brit king George is effing extra ... I’m guessing having a person literally hired to wipe your ass and yrs of (how can I put this delicately) keeping everything in the family can make you very delusional as to your actual importance to the world.

Some extra info: Alexander and Eliza actually had 8 kids in total. Phillip was their first son. Their first daughter “Angelica” became severely mentally ill after her brother died and needed 24 hour care and never moved out. At the time of Alexander’s death Eliza had just had another child who was 6 months old, a son who they named “Phillip” after their first son. Eliza was left alone with 7 children one who was mentally ill that she took care of and refused to lock away. She lived for 50 years and never married again. She outlived her both her sisters, her husband and two of her children.

Thank you so much for your appreciation of Lin Manuel Miranda as Hamilton. So many reviewers slammed him for not being as good as the rest of the cast. IMO, Hamilton needs to be that unrefined character because of his early life. He wasn’t accepted in society, lived through horrible turmoil, and lost everyone he loved early in life. His emotions are real and I think his performance is brilliant!

Absolutely. LMM's voice is actually perfect for Hamilton, an unrefined voice more used to rapping than singing among the gorgeously trained voices of the others, because Alexander Hamilton was a poor orphan who dragged himself up through the ranks through his intelligence while the other people around him were basically aristocracy from birth and had a lifetime of education and refinement, while Alexander didn't really get a full-on formal education until he went to King's College. So yeah, I think the voice is perfect and couldn't imagine a more classically trained singer playing his part. It would just feel weird.

"Who wrote this??" -- Welcome my friend to the GENIUS that is Lin-Manuel Miranda (also the guy playing the title role.) - it's interesting that you mention liking his voice; as far as singing goes, Lin is widely considered to be the LEAST strong vocally, out of the cast; though I would say his energy and emotion more than compensate. - Also, yes Alexander did what he did for love of his country and his family; BUT, he was also driven by a need to prove himself. What you were saying about needing to take the time to focus on your loved ones--- that is a lesson Alexander was slow to learn.

My favorite part of Hamilton is how the themes and characters change over time. Throughout the musical you hear Burr saying "wait for it" and Hamilton saying that he "will not throw away his shot". Yet in the end, Hamilton throws his shot away, and Burr does not wait long enough to notice before shooting. Really shows how much the characters have changed

Hello, theatre lighting guy here! Loved your reaction. This musical is so groundbreaking for our industry. Lin wrote such a beautiful piece of art, and it reaches way down deep and pulls me by the heartstrings every time I see it! I love seeing folks like you get into something that I hold very dear to my heart. Theatre keeps me going every day of my life, and I'm glad you got a small glimpse of that! Not only is what's happening on stage thrilling, but the amount of work going on behind the scenes is incredible. On Broadway, there are 8 shows a week. The lighting department takes care of 708 lights for the show, and there are 856 lighting cues during the show, and there are 3 spotlight operators. Every actor is wearing a microphone, and usually on Broadway or similar caliber, that microphone is only unmuted while the person is actively speaking or singing. There are 10 musicians that play live every night. And all of this chaos that happens during the show is being managed by one person, the production stage manager. A couple hundred hand props are taken care of daily. Hamilton averages 13 daily loads of laundry for 32 cast members. It takes an entire village of people to put this on 8 times a week, and to make sure that all the 32 actors have to do, is show up and perform. That chaos is my life and I love every minute of it! And like some others, I'd highly recommend watching other musicals that have been filmed live. Newsies, Rent, 42nd Street, Come From Away, Shrek the Musical, Memphis, Kinky Boots, Spongebob, there are plenty more I could recommend!

So fun watching along with you! It took 6 YEARS for Lin to write Hamilton! He is a musical & lyrical genius! The double use of words like “union” & “satisfied” as in marriage & country were amazing! The turntable floors were fabulous in getting across the motif of time... passing, pausing, spinning, rewinding, running out.... The thread that gives me chills is that Eliza wrote herself into the narrative when marrying Hamilton, wrote herself out of the narrative after his affair, but in the end she WROTE the narrative of his life! Wow! Fun Fact: Jefferson wouldn’t have been able to make the Louisiana Purchase without the financial system Hamilton set up! Lin has introduced Broadway to a whole new generation (youngers) and rap to a whole new generation (olders)!!!

I love Hamilton so much. Its the perfect way to get the new generation interested in history. Just a few notes here. 1. Lin-Manuel Miranda (The actor who played Hamilton in this show) also wrote all the lyrics and music himself (Which some help from Alex Lacamoire who helped with composition and did the orchestrations) 2. There are some of the things in the songs that Lin added for dramatic effect and isn't 100% historically accurate (Like Angelica saying she's the firstborn child and that her father has no sons, she actually had 3 older brothers) I don't feel that this takes away from the musical at all, its just something to remember.

I've watched each of these performances at least 6 or 7 times now, and I still end up sobbing. What an emotional roller coaster! And can we talk about the sheer brilliance of the stage craft here? Each time you watch it you will see something new. Take the actress who is known as "The Bullet" because she carries the bullet each time it hits one of the characters. Or the way the ballroom scene "rewinds" LIVE as Angelica launches into "Satisfied." Or the way the cast and scenery portray an actual Caribbean hurricane. Just brilliant.

Not sure if anyone's told you yet, there's a chorus member who is called The Bullet. Anytime she touches a main character, they die. Rewatch and see if you can spot it all (she's got the puffy top knot). She helps Laurens take down a british soldier, then they shake hands and after he dies. She touches Phillip's chest when he's looking for George Eaker, then Phillip dies. She's the bullet that whizzes over Hamilton's head. She's literally the bullet in the end battle.

There's a hilarious anecdote Lin Manuel Miranda told an interviewer once about how the song "You'll Be Back" came about. At the time of working on writing that song, he was working on the set of the show "House M.D", starring the legend that is Hugh Laurie. They were talking about what he was working on and he expressed frustration about a "breakup song" he was writing for King George to the Americans, and Hugh turned on his poshest kingly voice and went, "Oh...you'll be back." And thus, the song was born.

I love the subtle writing in this. Like in "The Room Where it Happens", instead of saying, "Thomas says", LMM writes, "Thomas claims" because Thomas Jefferson had a habit of retelling events to make everyone else look worse while making himself look better. That's basically why he's such a respected Founding Father by people in the present day, because most of what we know about things around Jefferson comes from Jefferson's own claims and only a deep dive into historical documents shows how much of a liar he was.

Alexander was kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place after he screwed up and cheated. If he'd lied or kept silent, his political enemies were planning on getting him on stealing money from the US Treasury to use it for a crime called "speculation". The result of that would have been him being thrown in prison and possibly executed, which would have left his family either destitute or permanently dependent on the charity of Eliza's family. So, he told the truth, which still resulted in his wife's broken heart and the first political sex scandal in US history, but those things were temporary. Painful, but temporary. He still was at fault for cheating in the first place, but honestly I think he made the best choice he could on how to deal with it.

An interesting bit of trivia about the duel. Now, this could be a total lie since it was said by the guy on Alexander's side of the duel, but honestly I see no point in them lying about it, so I tend to believe it. They said that Alexander told them that he was putting his glasses on so he could see Burr's face across the field to see if he was having second thoughts about the duel. Also, through forensic evidence found after the duel, it was shown that Alexander's bullet struck a tree *way* wide of the mark, and for a guy who had a reputation as a keen marksman, there is no way he could have fired the shot *that* wide without it either being on purpose, or as a result of a muscle spasm after Burr's bullet hit him. So, Alexander really did try not to kill Burr, and it was the death of him.

Yes, but definitely Broadway version… for pretty much any Sondheim. The movie versions miss so much of what makes those shows great. And I really hope they have a video recorded version of Hadestown waiting in the wings… with Andre deShields as Hermès. I think that show would be on permanent loop in my home if I had access to it.

As an extreme fan of this show, to the point where I've had the honor of seeing it 4 times live (4 different casts including the original Broadway cast right before they won ALL the Tonys), I gotta say it's so great to see a reactor experience this show as their first taste of live theatre. This show it ELECTRIC live. I wept openly every single time. One of the greatest Broadway experiences in existence. Long may it reign.

I've always said Broadway has the best actors, not to look down on Hollywood because there are lots of talented people too, but the rawness of live theater, specially musical theatre that conveys singing, acting and dancing at the same time... Is something else.

Lin's emotion during Quiet Uptown made me cry. So powerful. But also how can one man be such a genius to write all the music he does and be such a humble, lovable cupcake. And he is only in his early 40s so we can still look forward to so much more from him.

Ya know, it was Laurens death that (in the musical at least) solidified that he had to do everything. He had to be non-stop, or his hope for a legacy would die... Like how Laurens' father wrote that his dream died with him. Without it, I don't believe it would have driven him down this spiral
@jcompton8507
@jcompton8507 2 года назад
Right!?! I have to admit I really wonder how Hamilton's life (and the US in general) would have been different if John Laurens had lived. Coming from a very wealthy, prominent, and politically influential family from South Carolina (his father Henry served as President of the Continental Congress), John could have been the friend and confidant that Hamilton desperately needed - especially politically. Hamilton had his fair share of amazing mentors (Washington, Philip Schuyler, Robert Morris, etc.), but really needed more peers in his corner. Someone to check his impulses. But I also wonder what sort of influence John may have had on US politics in general. I find it so interesting that the son of an owner of one of the largest slave trading houses in North American would become such an outspoken critic of Slavery. And I can't help but wonder what kind of difference he could have made in early US politics.

I heard a rumor that Philippa got a call just before they recorded that her mother died. So her emotional acting was real because she used that real pain and grief to add to her performers. Not sure if it’s true but her scream when philip dies is legit heart wrenching .

Also, because he did the demos while he was working on Hamilton, Chris Jackson (GW) and Philippa Soo (Eliza) can be heard in the movie as well as he. He sings the English voice in "We Know the Way", Chris is the father's singing voice, and Philippa is a villager (I think with a line in a song). The video of Lin finding out his voice would be used is awesome; it's on YT. :)

These guys aren’t only super talented, but insanely hardworking. Not only did the actor for Hamilton write the whole thing, but they would do like 10 shows a week at this level of excellence. Also, Adam Savage from Mythbusters has a bunch of really cool behind the scenes videos for this play on his channel. They go over the props, moving stage, sound engineering, etc.

When you get into it and watch other videos on Hamilton you'll find out how intricate this is. The 1st person to get killed the woman man she's a soldier, She becomes what they call the bullet. She signifies every attempt on someone's life or proceeding death she traces the line of the bullet once when Hamilton was writing and it was a near miss another time when hamilton's son died hamilton's sun dies and she traces and slows the bullet when Hamilton dies. There are so many little things and big things it's amazing the more you go into it even how the music is written. Is Howard Ho Is a music theorist theorist I'm not sure if that's a ride word. But he describes how the music moves itself along the writing and the tone and how and how intricate it really is. There will be college courses taught on how to write music based on how they did it. Thanks it was a great review and this is my favorite play. Windman will Miranda also Wrote moana, His 1st play was in the heights which is amazing it was made into a movie which was great but came out at a bad time you know pandemic.

The guy who plays Washington actually also voices a character in that film. He also has written songs and voice acted in a movie called Vivo on netflix and has written another screen play called In The Heights which was turned into a movie with the actor playing Laurence in it and does a cameo. I listened to the soundtrack obsessively for about a year before I saw the film on Disney. First time I got to the sad bit in the middle (don't want to spoil it for anyone reading comments early) I had to stop myself sobbing in the office xD I was crying watching your reaction! Some interesting tidbits that most people probably don't pick up on unless they continue reading about the characters; the song that Burr and Hamilton sing together, Dear Theodosia, has some double meanings. Both Hamilton and Burr were devoted fathers; Burr insisted on giving his daughter a full education, as any boy would have received and Hamilton spent a lot of time with his children despite all his work, and they probably were hoping for their children to grow into strong characters who would "blow us all away". However, they also both lost their first born children as they were effectively "blown away". Theodosia was killed when her boat disappeared in a storm - on her way to go visit her father - so she was "blown away" and Phillip, as you could see, was shot. Hamilton's younger son grew up to be a lawyer and actually acted as divorce lawyer for Burr's second wife when she left him. Burr died the same day the divorce was finalized.

42:10 actually, they had i think 7 children at the time. In a musical you have to cut a out a lot of things cause there is no way to make time to aaaall of it. And to all of what its said to be relevant to the show. Anyway its quite sad, their second child and eldest daughter (they named her Angelica after of course Eliza's sister) really LOVED her brother Philip and when he was killed she suffered a mental breakdown that let her in a stated described as "eternal childhood" and often unable to recognize family members.

I went to see this in Washington DC with absolutely no information about the show. I hadn't heard any music, didn't really know the story. By the third song I was absolutely blown away when I realized that they hadn't stopped singing once. I've seen a lot of theater, and that is not normal even for musicals. This is one of those works of art that just makes you sit in awe of how creative human beings can be.

I loved hearing you discover the joy of live!!! The energy between a live audience and live performance is so exciting. Another huge benefit of live from an actors standpoint is that it's in sequence - so you get to go on the journey together. Whereas film isn't generally filmed in sequence, it makes the actors job different. I hope you get to go see something in person soon!!
