Hello everyone! I just thought I'd write a single comment, a year after uploading, to address some of the things you've all been mentioning in your comments. - I only chose the eight Honourable Mentions! I didn't choose any other games! I disagree with quite a few titles, but the video clearly has Amiga Power in the thumbnail and title, so don't shoot the messenger. - The algorithm I chose was very simple but did a reasonable job of ranking the games ACCORDING TO AMIGA POWER'S WISHES. If a game you don't like is high and one you do like is low, it's not my fault. For example, Frontier: Elite 2 was included at the bottom of ONE of the six lists, so naturally it's extremely low in my list. Nothing I can do about that. - Don't take the ranking so seriously: it's just a rough way of putting the 292 games from Amiga Power's lists in some kind of order. I'm glad you all enjoyed watching all these great Amiga games - even if you didn't agree with their place in my silly list! Happy new year! 😃
Because Amiga Power were as much idiots as the reviewers at Amiga Format that gave Deluxe Scrabble 25% more than Shadow of the Beast 1 in the same issue despite it costing only 7 bucks less and it was a game for LOSERS! ;) Few people had the IQ and technical knowledge to review Amiga 1000/500 etc games properly.
@@garyhay6771 I remember their review of Fears I think it was and all they could moan about was "it isn't Doom so it's crap" but actually Fears had much more creepy ambient background sounds on the level of Blair Witch creepiness. I had already stopped trusting reviews when in 1989 Amiga Format gave £27.99 Deluxe Scrabble 87% but only gave Shadow of the Beast 65% or something. I bought an Amiga to play arcade quality games not scrabble! lol I had a 520ST for that :)
Most obvious to me missing was MOONSTONE. Unbelievable that it wasn't on the list, probably one of the best Amiga games I've played. Maxis' Robosport, DataStorm and also Z-Out, the latter worth it just for Chris Hülsbeck's incredible soundtrack alone also strangely absent. Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2 would also have fit right in.
I have a huge problem with this list. I’m wondering, if the author is trolling us, to generate controversy. In separate comment I’ll put my missing games, but I just wanted to tell You, that You’re completely right. Moonstone is easy a top 10 Amiga game for me, but a 300 titles list without it is wrong. Simple as that.
I'm pretty sure there was some rule barring certain games for one reason or another. I was just as surprised to see that xcom / ufo: enemy unknown wasn't here, and I'm sure there are many others. You're right about z-out (and huelsbeck) too!
Just to name a few memorable mentions of my own: Benefactor Space Taxi Magic Pockets Cosmic Spacehead Lethal Weapon Moonstone Super Methane Bros Quak Test drive Alfred Chicken Robin Hood ATR All Dizzy titles Elf Mania Rise of the Robots Great Giana Sisters Midnight Resistance It came from the Desert I spent a lot of time on Space Taxi. Not sure if some of you would remember it. Very addictive.
Dyna Blaster was brilliant in that not only could you play 5 player, but the game literally INCLUDED the 5 player adapter in the box!! We played the hell out of it 🖤
Was very surprised Marble Madness didn't make their cut. So many hours spent on that. And Battle Chess is def one of my best remembered. (And TY for posting this list - so many I'd never heard of even!)
I watched the entire video, it was a good look at 300 games. In this list, some games that I personally consider as milestones are missing, even if I'm not sure how AMIGA Power classified them: Mean Arenas, Turrican III, Arabian Nights, Woody's World, Simon The Sorcerer, Hybris, Brian The Lion, Lost Vikings, Battle Chess
Mega Lo Mania is one of the most underrated games of all time. I am so glad Speedball2 was number one, would have been a travesty if it didnt place top 5 with Cannon Fodder and The Chaos Engine. A lot of fantastic titles that brought back the feels... but so many Amiga original titles that were freaking awesome were sub 100 which is a real shame. Project X by Team17 was an incredible shooter, as was X-Out and Z-out. Rainbow Arts and Factor 5made a large number of awesome games. Remember Great Giana Sisters and Katakis, obvious clones but as good if not better than the originals. Also did not see the Psygnosis mentioned much, like Agony and Beast 2, Atomino also highly underrated. Amiga could do some amazing things when put to task.
Yeah I liked Meglomania. I liked going through the different tech ages from cavemen to flying saucers. I think this would make a good multiplayer game with some very tense gaming.
Mega Lo Mania was one of the Amiga games I know I completed, Dune II (which whould have been a top 3 for me) Civilization, Laser Squad/UFO and Hired Guns were amongst my favourites.
Very very good video. I like that you put the rating system at the beginning and that you put the points and the game names always up. And: Thank you for using the 4:3-Format. Because that's what it was like!
40 Hunter, I loved this game, on my A600 it had a bug where I could only walk in diagonals to the right and no diagonals to the left. Still loved it, so many cool things to find. The sun bather or the shark.
Good point, I forgot to include it in the description. It's one of the most famous MODs out there, so I figured it would be a good choice, but I'll mention it in the description. Thanks!
It’s got to be The Secret Of Monkey Island for me. Memories of that game are as good as anything since. Happy to see Speedball II at the top spot. That game was addictive and drove every competitive instinct. The Amiga was a ground-breaking platform. Amiga Power added another dimension to it.
There are so many games that I only remembered by seeing them again in this video... How many hours did I spend in front of my Amiga 1200❤ ... A big thank you for this video...
So Amiga Power decided to put 4 Defender games on this list, but no Datastorm… They also put both Kick Off and Kick Off 2 on the list, but no Goal… They also put a number of manager games, but not one of the absolute best - Championship Manager… The fact that you had to put on Turrican 2 and Superfrog as honourable mentions is… well, typical Amiga Power. Some games that I think are missing apart from the above mentioned - ATR, Space Hulk, Floor 13, Dreamweb, F-117a Stealth Fighter and more. Oh Well…
Great list and thank you for all the time and effort in putting this together. I loved my Amiga, but I didn't have too much money for games, so a lot of my favourites are coverdisk games and PD ones, so I didn't expect them to make the list. My all time favourite is Scorched Tanks, can't tell you how much time me, my brother and my friends spent playing that one. Also, surprised that Battle Chess didn't make the cut either - it holds a special place in my heart as it was my first Amiga game :)
Worms Directors cut was my most played game (maybe equal with Alien Breed 3d and 3d2). My PC and console owning mates and brother had normal Worms but directors cut was what brought them to my house, and with custom voices for the worms each team picked their worms and voices. Ah the glory days. and maybe dune II. Maybe do a follow up of Shareware and Freeware or PD games? Galaga, Deluxe Galaga, Tanks.
Pretty solid, yet random-order list. Moonstone and UFO: Enemy Unknown, that are the most obvious ones missing (and appearing in most other top100), plus those being Honorable Mentions = CRAZY :D
The movie as a list of 300 random Amiga games would be ok. However, the order of these games is so strange that it's hard to agree with such a choice. Tetris Pro higher than Slam Tilt? My god who made this order?
Good list! i think that are some games very important that has to be in the list in the top 100: - Agony - Barbarian - Rastan - The lost vikings - Lionheart - The settlers - UFO: Enemy Unknown (a must!) - Wings - Speedball 2 - Syndicate ( a classic!) - Simon the Sorcerer - Moonstone - Mega lo Mania - Beneath A Steel Sky (a classic!) And one special mention to: - They came from the desert What a time, the time of amiga 500... I was very happy, with so little :-)
Out of all the games on the list my personal favourites were lemmings, mortal kombat, another world, desert strike, flashback, sensible soccer, micro machines, monkey island 2, f1 grand prix and rainbow islands. But my number 1 game that I played so many hours playing that isn't on the list is my beloved championship manager.
Great list of Amiga games and I've played most of them on the list to varying degrees. I know this is Amiga Powers rating but man I disagree with the placing of a lot of the games. Elite, Wings, Defender of the Crown, Rick Dangerous, SWOS and Populous are to name a few way out of where they should be. They are easily top 30. And no Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2 🤔
Hero Quest was awesome, I still play it sometimes, back in 1992 or so I bought it. I had to go downtown to the bank and buy a money order in British sterling (pounds) and mail it to a store in England. I live in the US so it was a bit of a chore. I knew of the game from my Amiga Power, or maybe Amiga Action or some other mag. I have the board game so of course I had to have the computer version, it was so fun.
This is a decent wee retrospective and does give an insight into the workings of Amiga Towers. I don't agree with their ratings much at all but these guys (and they were guys) lived and breathed Amiga games so good for them.
F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Fighter 2.0 with superb graphics on AGA. Wings of Fury was cool, Mr. Nutz Hopping Mad was fun (at least my sister loved it), GeeBee Air Rally. Nuclear War was a game in its own genre. Others to mention Wayne Gretzky Hockey 2, Indy Heat, Colorado and Weird Dreams. Ugh. So so so many memories of good games not making it to this already extensive top 300 list.
Was there something missing? Well...I do not know very much about the Amiga as I grew up in the US with consoles and PC's but I know the Amiga had Xcom. That game was flat out amazing on my 486DX2 back in 1994. It was one of the few games that pulled me away from Doom, Street Fighter 2 (GEN/SNES), and Samurai Shodown (ARC and AES rental). It is still one of the most intense games I have ever played and I have played thousands of games from all genres.
I will add that the Amiga 500 could be connected to another Amiga 500 via a self-made cable and played not only against the computer, but also against another player. This is how my son and I played.
Street Fighter II is missing; I remember at the time people being blown away with how close a port of the arcade it was given the constraints of the system. Also missing is Hybris, an amazing vertical scrolling shoot em up. Some others I played the crap out of: TV Sports Basketball, Eye of the Beholder, Bloodwych, Robocop, Operation Wolf, Sidewinder, RVF Honda. As for football sims; there was this super addictive one that had cards you flipped over, not sure if anyone remembers it - it was great.
Awesome. I'm trying to remember but heres a few more that I like. Wings of Fury, Barbarian the ultimate warrior, Ninja Warriors , Indy Heat, TestDrive,WolfChild, After the War, ,Damage ,knights ,Agony , Moonstone , Mortal kombat 2, Fire Force, Robocop2, Ruff and Tumble, Odyssey, Jim powers, Elvira ,Hostages, Flink-cd32. And game that I never got to play was Genetic species. Looking forward to the Amiga500 mini that's coming out ,so I can add all these games 👍🏻
I think the only game you mentioned that made the list was Leander, I did think about adding Barbarian as an Honourable Mention, but I figured it's just as good on the C64 really, and isn't as iconic as some of the games I chose. EDIT: ah, you edited your comment to remove Leander. ☺️
@@psyklaxia3675 @Psyklaxia yepp I editi it out before your reply 🤣 I think Moonstone is iconic also think Battlechess is iconic. What do you think? Amiga was my life back in the day. Amiga forever🤘🏻
@@psyklaxia3675 I think you're thoughts on Barbarian can also be applied to Buggy boy. 👍🏻 Both Great Games with better graphics on the Amiga. Really liked your video good jobb 😃
@@AmigaVR Agreed, just that Amiga Power chose Buggy Boy but not Barbarian. They chose a few games that are more well-known on the 8-bits - Head Over Heels, anyone?
I tried some of the games tonight - hell are those games hard o.O I tried stunt car racer - lost everytime so far ^^ Was brutally trashed in Street Fighter II, destroyed in Battle Squadron ... I know that I suck at soccer games - and logically I was crushed in SWOS and Speedball II xD But I love that the games are just essentially games - you start them, start playing, learning - no annoying "Rewards", "Tutorials" and "Trophies" every 10 seconds. Will continue tomorrow :)
Imagine coming across an Amiga All Time Top 300 list and you haven't even heard of probably half of it while also half of the games you had and loved are just blatantly missing... (too lazy to list them all, others have mentioned most of them in the comments, probably) That just proves there's been so many great games, what a time in gaming!
Top for me were The Settlers and Pinball Dreams/Illusions/Fantasies trio. Turrican II deserved a place on the list for the soundtrack alone!!! Yeah, I spent most of my time writing music with Protracker so I am biased :D Still have my A1200 sitting in a cupboard but sadly not my old original A500.
Thanks for the video, great job! It kicked me back in time :) If, i didn't miss it, here is a few that i played an nobody mentioned it. Some of them are crappy some really playable :) • Crystal Hammer (1988) • Fright Night (1988) • Wayne Gretzky Hockey (1988) • Budokan: The Martial Spirit (1989) • The Persian Gulf Inferno (1989) • The Running Man (1989) • Nitro (1990) • Ooops Up (1990) • Total Recall (1990) • Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) • Harald Hårdtand: Kampen om de Rene Tænder (1992) • Red Baron (1992) • Alcatraz (1992) • Waxworks (1993)
Wizball was one of my favourite games on the c64. Seemingly the c64 version of Wizball was better than Amiga version. Just got myself an Amiga mini and hopefully be able to play it soon.
Shitty football managers, dubious arcade conversions, frickin PONG that makes it next to TURRICAN, obscure cheap titles that were not looking good even at the time... Weird list, really. Appreciate the special mentions though. They are the actual top 5 maybe, with Hired Guns which is shamefully down the list. Turrican II is light years ahead of a lot of shitty platformers that appeared on the list...
"Pink Panther" is very tough, but visually appealing; The "Battlechess" port is a little sluggish (still trying to configure some more juice for it); Where was "Marble Madness"? An original classic; "Colditz" is surely worth a mention; But "Larn" is another great classic; As is "Mindshadow", "KGB" & "The Clue"; You had "Balance of Power", but not "Risk"; "Hillsfar" has some appeal; I guess you had the important Sid Meir games present, but missed "Pirates"; Glad you inserted "North & South". A comprehensive list for an underated platform nevertheless - Great to see there's still some Amiga Life out there! Cheers, 🐏
I can't wait for the A500 maxi. I didn't miss out on playing with the Amiga as a kid but I never owned one. It's easily the best computer and console from 1987-1995, blowing away sega, nintendo and DOS. Windows 95 made PC king, though.
I'd say there were a few games that I loved that didn't make your list but I guess thats the beauty of nostalgia and how things were back then. You would never have been exposed to all the games because unless you had deep pockets or friends that had a copy it was a case of just loving what you had. Great list though, thank you for sharing. Are you going to get the A500 mini?
I never had an Amiga, probably too expensive for me at the time, I went from sega/nintendo to PC, but looking at this, for games, Amiga seems to me to have capabilities similar to that of a Megadrive.
It was half Megadrive and half snes. It had Megadrive scroll smoothness and snes sound quality and richer color palette. But it also had one of the worst arcade conversion libraries for a platform in all history (contrary to both Sega and Nintendo consoles).
@@sambas9257 The Amiga did have a few excellent ports, though they are the exceptions. Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, The New Zealand Story, Silkworm, Toki, Super Hang-On, Buggy Boy, Rodland, Operation Wolf, Operation Thunderbolt, R-Type, R-Type 2, Arkanoid, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Commando, Midnight Resistance, Pacmania, Pang, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Paperboy, Marble Madness, Ninja Warriors, Liquid Kids, Ivan Ironmans Super Off-Road, Saint Dragon, Escape from the planet of the robot monsters, Snow Bros., Rampart... Damn, there were more than I thought.
@@SA77888 Don't take his word for it. SNES had wayyy richer color palette. Do your research and don't trust every know it all characters here in RU-vid. I had all 3 of those 16-bit machines. Amiga had the weakest hardware, but what it lost in power, it gained in diversity. Amiga was my favorite because it had everything from platformers to strip poker games.
Don't agree with that top 10 at all. If I did a top 10, it would include Chaos Engine and Speedball 2, but would have to include Wings, Monkey Island 1 and 2, ProjectX, Addams Family, Super Frog, Alien Breed: Tower Assault, and either Shadow Fighter or Fightin' Spirit
There are several games, I missed on this list . "Wizball" was great, "Ambermoon" and "Amberstar", the best RPGs of their time. "The fairy tale adventure" or "Bard's tale (I to III), "Black Crypt" and many more.....
I've been looking for an Amiga youtube channel that isn't narrated by someone who sounds developmentally challenged or whose content is about breasts maybe as much as it is about games. I think I may have found it! Thank you for this video!
A 40cm 4:3 CRT would be the best to really appreciate the graphic fidelity at the time. Our 51cm Philips CRT was not bad, but already a little too large. The SNES however had more colors on screen than OCS/ECS Amiga, but lacked the resolution compared to it.
I just realised ufo: enemy unknown wasn't in these lists... I gather it's against the rules for some reason, but unfamiliar with the rules, I'm unsure why... If the game has to be on amiga first, why final fight / mortal kombat etc? Either way, its a classic.
Well done and I have played games like Qwak, Wiz & Liz... on an Amiga 500+. Do you know an Amiga (mini) game where you could create a band (I think it was bears) and get a chart placement 🍹
Agreed with Player manager, kick off engine with a crap management element bolted on but still played it till my player manager was still playing in his 80's as a RB so he wouldn't be too much of a liability!
I'm chuckling at the notion of the days when the term "frames per second" wasn't a part of the gaming daily lexicon and no one knew or cared if a game ran at (what would be like) 10 FPS today, and that was normal. Not that I'd want to play those today...
That's nbot true at all! The low framerate was the biggest problem of R-Type! And when Turrican came along, Factor 5 made sure to advertise FULL 50Hz eight way scrolling!
