Weird innit? I started to look at this Amp online only today and I watched a couple of 'Reviews'? I had seen the 'REVV' logo ... somewhere before? Then I came across this video. The light went on! "That's where I've seen it!" (I said to myself). Now I get it Kris! It is a 'Love Story' which you (initially) didn't wish to share - less we all get jealous? I'm jealous Kris.

I had a Dynamis a few years ago that I bought for a pedal platform. Ultimately, I felt like I underutilized it when I used pedals or never needed pedals when I used what the amp already provided… Craziest of bs reasons to sell an amp, but it is what it is. Great sounding amp though and I always felt a bit of regret for selling.

I bought my seafoam green dynamis (discontinued) combo years ago, oddly, it shows up on some online stores for sale still LOL Each time I play it, it sounds better, I have played more than 40 guitars through it and counting. The thing that surprises me is that every type of pickup, weak or powerful, sweet or edgy and every scale length, hollow, semi or solid construction gets to shine with it's own colors and characters. I still haven't figured out how the programmable side of the footswitch remembers the settings you program, the pots aren't motorized, I guess it's Revv's well kept secret..

Hi Kris! Great video as usual :) I own a Dynamis head and unlike you i usually use the drive channel for gain. I urge you to push it, the Dynamis can produce very nice gain. It has replaced most of my pedals. I guess my humbuckers are on the hotter side, when the Dynamis is set to red (channel, dynamics and contour) it gets a lot close to hi-gain than just a rock-tone, at least to my ears. When it comes to gain the result is the same if i use a low wattage driver like the 1x12 G12S Blackback or 2x12 EVM12L, of course different speakers produce different eq/tone. Still whichever speaker I choose last in the signalchain the drive is always great.

there are several (small and often unknown) amp builders out there who are able to build amps that have literally almost nothing in common with what most people would call good amps like the industrially produced marshalls,fenders,boogies,ect ect. Everyone who has ever played such an amp will never forget the difference in dynamics ,overtones and versetility and expression. And such an amp might bring a life long search of THE tone to an end.

Hey Kris, thank you for the overview. I wonder, if you use your amp clean (so the preamp section never breaks up, which means it does not compress your sound) and it does not color sound either, how does it differ from plug your pedalboard directly to the power amp? Some compression can happen in the power amp section if you use high volume, of course, but this will be similar for most amps which use the same tube type that are biased similarly.
@KrisBarocsi
@KrisBarocsi Год назад
Hey, I mainly use the amp clean but there’s a lot happening in the preamp section. Definitely some compression, coloration and with my settings it breaks up a little bit. Especially with humbuckers. I’d say the preamp and the power amp contribute to the sound I’m getting equally. Cheers

Question for all owners of this amp, how's the headroom on the clean channel? I need an amp that retains "glassy cleans" at gig volumes, does it stay clean at louder volumes or does it break up fairly early?
@KrisBarocsi
@KrisBarocsi 9 месяцев назад
Hey, before I say anything, this first version of the Dynamis has been replaced by the D40 Dynamis, which is a newer and tweak amp with plenty headroom. Even with humbuckers at gigging volume. Now about this amp: I played it a lot on stage with a pretty loud rock band and I wasn’t allowed to turn it up over 9 o‘clock on the clean channel. 😅 That’s like 105-110dB. At that setting it’s still clean with single coils but starts to break up with humbuckers. If you go a little lower it’s still loud and even humbuckers stay clean. And as told, the current version, the D40 Dynamis has much more headroom so it’s all super safe.
@MrSlimfinger
@MrSlimfinger 9 месяцев назад
Whoa, thanks for providing some numbers Kris! That's all I needed to know :) Still clean with single coils at 105dB is sure enough for me! Interesting video. i was wondering if the Roland Jazz Chorus could somewhat be equivalent to the REVV. Indeed, I tried it many years ago and I was impressed by its clean sound. Such a feature should, in principle, allow for the JC to be an excellent platform for pedals. Unfortunately, I did not have pedals with me... Have you ever tried the JC as with pedals?
@StephaneBergeronPixelyzed
@StephaneBergeronPixelyzed Год назад
I have used a JC-120 for years in the 80s and early 90s. It's not even remotely close to the Dynamis' clean channel. It's a completely different animal. BTW, I do now own a Dynamis myself so I know it well too :) The attack is rounder but punchier on the Dynamis. The Roland JC is a very specific tone that is naturally brighter, more clinical. The amp that is closest to the Dynamis that I have played is my 1989 "red knobs" Fender Twin. Being a tube amp, it has a similar attack to the Dynamis but is a LOT louder being 100 watts. The Dynamis has much more in common with a Fender clean than the Roland JC (which is a good thing for me). WHen I got the Dynamis I was hoping it would have a similar Fender "chime" to my red knobs Twin and it does but it's rounder and warmer without loosing punch. The JC-120 was more jangly than chimey (I realize these qualifiers are subjective but trying to describe the differences the best I can). The JC was a great amp and I loved it when I owned it but when I replaced it with my Twin I had found my real tone. More organic with punch and clarity and that Fender "bell like" chime I keep referring to. Hope this helps a bit!

@antalantal2366 Год назад
@@StephaneBergeronPixelyzed Thank you very much for taking time to provide an insightful answer, I appreciate your effort. That said, I was not looking for a comparison between the two amps. What I would like to know is the following: can the JC be regarded as a neutral platform for pedals? Or, do all the pedals end up by being brutally overtaken by the amp and then sound rather "bright" and "clinical" as you wrote?

@StephaneBergeronPixelyzed Год назад
@@antalantal2366 Hi again! I don't really know how I would fare with a JC-120 and pedals now. My main dirt in the 80s was a Boss DS-1 and that could be harsh in the JC-120. I also used a Rockman Sustainor with it in the early 90s which was a better distortion to me then. I loved the tone I was getting with it but I'm sure it would sound better through a tube amp. What I can say is that, for some leads at least, I play the DS-1 model of my HX FX through the Dynamis clean and it sounds way better than I remember the real DS-1 sounding through my JC-120 back then. WHy do I play leads with a DS-1 model you may wonder, well part of our set is old Marillion songs and Steve Rothery played one through his JC-120. I have to say he got better lead tones with that combo than I was able to achieve in the 80s. All that is a long winded way to give you some context and say that, to my current ears, I do not think the Jazz Chorus would be a great pedal platform. But that's exactly what it was to me and many pro guitar players back then. My inexperience may have explained my struggling with it. Roland Orzabal from Tears for Fears played a Boss SD-1 overdrive pedal through it (listen to the Shout solo for example, it's that sound). Adrian Belew in 80s King Crimson was all JC-120. Its dirt channel was/is garbage so everyone had to use pedals through it. If you can, I would simply go to a store that carries it with your guitar and favorite dirt pedals and just try it. No amount of description will replace a direct listen. But for my taste, it would really not sound anywhere near as good as the same pedals through the Dynamis or my old Twin which both have much rounder attacks and "balls" than the Jazz Chorus. Its clean tone is unique and you love or hate it. I used to love it but wouldn't use it now.
@StephaneBergeronPixelyzed
@StephaneBergeronPixelyzed Год назад
@@antalantal2366 And just to add, I have not played an actual Jazz Chorus in well over 2 decades so take what I said with that in consideration. I have played with one almost exclusively for 12 years (last 2 in a 2 amps rig with a 2x12 Marshall combo). So I am experienced with it... but it's old experience and the rest of my rig is better quality now than it was then :)

Been playing professionally for 40 years. I own 9 vintage Fender tube amps, 3 Marshalls - including an original '87 50w Silver Jubilee - several Fender and Marshall cabs with all the "famous" speakers....highly sought after Tube Screamers, an original Nobels ODR-1, a '58 Fender Esquire, two Fender Custom Shop Teles, a '82 Les Paul, a '77 Les Paul Custom with a Kahler trem (horrible!), old Lexicon verbs and delays.....etc, etc, etc. They ALL have their own thing, but I can take a MIM or MIJ Fender tele, a Peavey Classic, Boss DS-1 and rock out with the best of 'em! lol. The best part of being an old worn-out rocker is the pursuit of "tone nirvana" by spending money is a thing of the PAST! Love it.
