My household is working on learning Japanese to talk to our 91 year old grandma who has signs of dementia and sometimes can’t remember the English word but can remember the Japanese word. I just checked out Busuu for Spanish just now. It definitely is different. And I can see why some people prefer it. I would recommend taking notes along side going over the lessons for Busuu, since the vocab is lightly touched upon before the lessons move on. Not bad though.

I bought busuu for the year for $50. One thing I tend to do a lot is screenshot review sheets. Also I practice writing hiragana, katakana, while working on pronunciation and putting together phrases between lessons. I think its more effective when you can be somewhat self efficient off the app.

With Busuu, in my experience, the content on there was less focused on vocabulary and more on writing. I've learnt a lot of hiragana and katakana from it and a touch of kanji (the basic numbers 1-10), before stopping due to me getting distracted on other things. And while that is helpful for translating signs, the words they teach you isn't enough to hold a conversation, ask questions, etc. I didn't complete the entire Japanese course so don't take this as truth, but from how far I got, it was more writing focused than anything.

Hi John, Thanks for the reviews. I am considering making a full commitment to learning to speak Japanese as fluently as possible having spent some time in Tokyo and hanging out too much with other expats! My vocab is still pretty good but my question is; does Rocket or Pimsleur differentiate between male and female learners? The language is different depending on your sex and you can sound pretty strange to a native speaker if you use the wrong phrases and verb endings. In my view, unless this is asked at the beginning of the course this would be a major fault.
@TestPrepInsight
@TestPrepInsight 9 месяцев назад
Neither is geared towards one sex or another specifically, but rather calls out differences in the lessons. Rocket Japanese is particularly good about noting differences for what you mention in their "language & culture" lessons.

John, I really enjoy your comprehensive reviews. I need your help. I’m going to Japan this coming June ( 2042, June 21-July 6) and I am committed to learn Japanese for my trip and beyond. I have purchased Pimsleur, workbooks, etc. I like Pimsleur for pronunciation, listening and speaking, but it is incredibly boring… the 1/2 hour dialogues are brutal…. I rush through them to get to the practice aids. I might stay with it just for speaking practice, but are there other programs that could help in addition?There are so many; and online zoom classes are becoming popular, too. I’m a 75 year old retired educator and traveling enthusiast…what combo would you use if you were me? Best, John

Have you tried Rocket Japanese yet? They have similar audio lessons, but I find them more engaging. Plus, their accompanying grammar lessons are awesome. Please try them out. For live sessions, I would look into iTalki or Rosetta Stone's live small group lessons. Those are great as well.

Heyo! I love Rocket Japanese, these structure just works so well. After the first time going through a new lesson, you feel a bit overwhelmed, but the exelent explanations they give on grammer really helps. After doing the flash cards, the hear it say it drills and finally the know it drills, boom you have learned new words and vocabulary. A review session the following day and you can consider it cemented in your head :D. I personally love owning things/courses so I'll almost always go for the lifetime access ones. And Rocket regularly has 60% off specials, which is awesome. Despite my disliking to Dualingo, I agree with you that it can be a very good supplementary resource used with a proper language course. Thanks as always for all the effort John :) !

Yep, I've been using Duolingo for almost 2 months now and it's become clear that it's not good as a primary learning method. I found this channel while looking for reviews on both Duolingo and other language apps, and plan on continuing to use it daily but as a secondary method, for sure, or more casual learning.

Could you let me know why? Before I renew. Ty sir/ma'am.
@peekaboo1575
@peekaboo1575 8 месяцев назад
@@SirCharlesLikesChurrosDuolingo not only gives you no explanation to what you're learning but it also messed up with the Japanese course completely. It has thrown me (and many others) out of track by redoing the progress tree and randomly placing me somewhere that was far behind where I was before. Of course, they also added many things to the course, but those things weren't made to be revised by the already existing users, meaning that although I was far behind where I was before I couldn't simply force my way forward because I'd be missing a lot that was news to each module. In fact even on the earlier modules they added things that were then never revised and/or covered so you'd end up not knowing what that was. Finally, they removed the kanji from most of the lessons, replacing it with hiragana. Even on the intermediate lessons you'd be bombarded with a sea of hiragana which was dazzling to say the least. There's also the fact that they removed the ability to interact with the community, which was a great source of learning, often much more comprehensively so than the app's course itself. I had been used the app for years, had a 1400+ days streak and so on, and Duolingo just became unusable for me. I have ditched it for Busuu now. It does explain what you're learning, it does not use bots to read text, opting for actual people instead and finally you do get to interact with actual Japanese speakers which is actually quite helpful. There are drawbacks too, of course. With Busuu you don't get the practice function that you have with Duolingo (at least not unless you pay for it) and the lessons for each module are always the same, on the same order even, meaning that there's 'no variety' for you to learn from. But other than that I genuinely prefer it to Duo. If you have the coin, consider testing Rocket or some other fancier app. Busuu from what I understand is not as good but I use it because I'm a cheapskate and don't like paying for apps at all if I can help. I apologize for the wall of text and hope I have helped.

My main problem with Pimsleur is that it is as dry as plaster. There is NO charm that app IMO in the slightest. As someone that struggles to stay motivated learning, Pimsleur did absolutely nothing to alleviate that. Pimsleur is good for the people that are dead set or have stakes to learning Japanese, and don't the app itself of the execution of lessons to push them

Anything that teaches romaji is bad since Japanese do not use romaji to write and romaji isn't phonetic map of Japanese pronunciations what I recommend is ebook series by Hisatoshi Yasunaga if you read/listen these books you will quickly make improvements way better than those apps it would be perfect if his voice was more energetic but you could always use a better sounding TTS, only costs a couple bucks for months of content
