Best Area in Each State to Get Away from People

Analysis of the best area/region of each state that has the fewest amount of people. Of course someone could just lock themselves in a cabin in the wilderness for total solitude, but here I look the least sparsely populated part of each state while still being in a small/tiny town.

I feel like a light pollution map is a pretty accurate way of doing this. The darkest region of the state also probably has the least people and the least development. You could go to the middle of a cornfield where no one is around but i would still consider it near stuff since it is human developed; a light pollution map would still show unpopulated developed areas having some light

@@jonathansykes4986 it is interesting that you can clearly see some country borders just from the light pollution. North Korea, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan all have their neighbors lit up right to the border, but then their own countries are dark. Seems like the correlation between these countries is they are communist or dictatorships/monarchies until recently or still are.

I'm from Wyoming, and while I had admittedly not visited Araminto, it's fascinating how many ghost towns there are from the oil booms and busts, among other things. It's definitely sad, but also really intriguing. My parents took us on a "see the state" road trip as a kid about 20 years ago and I learned so much!

Kyle, excellent picks from the King! When I used to ride my dirtbike in the west desert of Utah years ago, I often thought, "If I get lost and run out of gas...or crash out here, they might never find my body!" I rented a house in Monterey for one week in the Summer back in the early 1980's and enjoyed the quiet and scenic views of the mountains there. Earlier in the 1960's my father, who was a minister, held Summer religious revivals in Doe Hill, which is an even smaller town in Highland County. On another occasion in the early 1970's I drove through Highland County returning home to Staunton very early in the morning after playing in a band at a dance in West Virginia and only encountered one other car on the road in the whole county. I was astounded when I saw that its license plate was from Montana!

The Juab County Sheriff passed by me at one point and stopped, saying he had never seen a cyclist on that road and did I know where I was going? 18 hours later, I had run out of water just before I got back to the paved road.

Very interesting video. It seems like some entries are more subjective based on the geologic/ecologic/economic status of a part of the state, and others are based more on statistics. I'd love to see a brief look at the least densely populated county in each state and see how that compares with the entries in a video like this one. Also, since you just recently took a drive through New England, you might appreciate this. Suffolk County, in Massachusetts, home to Boston, has a population density of 13,879/sq mi. I recently moved to Franklin County, which is the second-least-densely populated county in Massachusetts, with a density of only 100.5 per sq. mi. In this video, for Massachusetts, you mentioned Barre, which is right by the Quabbin Reservoir, which is a hotspot for day-hikers and casual boaters. It has a population of just over 5000 and is located in Worcester County, which has a population density of 536 per sq. mi. It's a common town to pass through if you're visiting the Quabbin from Worcester, Holden, or Rutland, so it gets fairly crowded in the spring and summer. If I had to pick a town to represent Massachusetts, I'd go with Rowe, located in western Franklin County.

I like your list. I just happened to live in one of those places and it is isolated. Grew up, moved away, came back. Still a good place to live. Still have family here.

I've actually been to Manhatten, NV. Was on a trip to Vegas from Northern Nevada back in 2004. and on the way back I saw it on the map. I had never heard of the town before despite growing up in Northern Nevada only a hundred or so miles away, so I decided to go see what was there. They have a couple giant mine pits right next to the town. That's pretty much the only notable feature.

I applaud you for putting the State / Town lower in the video. Where is the US going in the next 50 years? I always enjoy you buddy! Safe Travels!

What a great idea for a video . . . I'm definitely looking forward to this one, and will comment as I watch. . . . . Wow, With over 3000 counties in the US, it was interesting to see that one of our least celebrated presidents, Warren Harding, was the namesake of two of the counties that showed up on your list.. . . . I also wonder, with so many of these towns near state borders (for understandable reasons) I wonder what two points on your list are the closest to each other? . . . . And you said it, you (or the alphabet) saved the best for last!

I've been to every corner of WA state and I honestly came here hoping you fumbled so I could call you out but I think you hit the nail on the head with Starbuck. While road tripping through to Palouse Falls, we stopped to get gas and my god that town looks like it should be abandonded but there's actually people living there.

I live just south of Sharon, Ct, and used to work there. It's truly one of the last untouched parts of the state and is quite lovely. Conveniently, the historic Lime Rock Park is located 10 minutes away for those interested in motorsports (such as myself).

I’m from the UP of Michigan and loved your pick! So many rural areas there. Check out Grand Marais Michigan if you’re ever up there

I actually visited Grand Marais last year, saw perhaps the prettiest sunset I’ve ever seen on that public beach area. I was shocked to read it had a population of just over 200-it was pretty crowded that night but have to figure everyone was there for the same reason I was. I’m from the Lower Peninsula (Thumb region) but I love just about anything that has to do with Lake Superior.

Highland County (VA) is a great choice for 48 of the 52 weeks in a year. The two weeks in October for leaf viewing and the two weeks in March for the Maple Festival create HUGE crowds and traffic issues.

Wow seeing everybody mention little towns are unpopulated places in the country is so fascinating, everybody has different but equally fascinating stories to tell. Makes me wanna go on a road trip and try to hit as many deserted areas as possible 😂

I was expecting to not have been to any of these towns, but I'm pretty sure we drove through Alma, GA on an alternative route home from Jekyll Island when I was young. I think we drove through Monterey, VA not too many years ago trying to get to Snowshoe Resort when we had some snow issues on a road further north. Finally, I don't think I've ever been to Arthur, NE, but I did notice it being the only town in the county many years ago. It is possible, I was there long ago with my grandfather while he was working, or drove through it with my grandparents.

Having lived in California my whole life in very populated areas, I love to get away to the "boonies" within California. Never been to Tulelake, but have been to Dorris (26 miles away.) There isn't much in that part of the state. Although Tulelake did have a Japanese-American internment camp during WWII.

my family owns property just west of driftwood in PA, and i can definitely say that it is becoming more touristy. seems like every time we go to stay up there, there’s more people around, especially in the early fall during the elk’s rut season

North-central Pennsylvania is so desolate that it has an International Dark Sky Park. Cherry Springs State Park is so dark that, on a clear night, not only can you see the Milky Way galaxy with the naked eye, but you can also see zodiacal light ("false dawn") near the horizon, and "gegenschein" at the antisolar point in the night sky. The worst tornado outbreak in Pennsylvania history produced a violent, long-track, two-mile-wide F4 tornado that screamed for 70 miles across the Moshannon and Sproul State Forests in north-central Pennsylvania on May 31, 1985. After destroying a shed and another small building in the first mile of its path, the only other building the tornado hit in the next 69 miles was a cabin. Otherwise, nothing but trees, and the occasional power line near the few roads it crossed. Take a drive on PA 144 from near Snow Shoe to Renovo, and there's literally nothing for more than 30 miles. The few roads that intersect it aren't even paved, and at one point the nearest paved road is eight miles away. Even Google hasn't bothered sending Street View that way since 2008. On that drive, it becomes hard to believe that Pennsylvania has a population of 13,000,000. Farther east is the appropriately-named World's End State Park. At the vista in the park, it really feels like you're standing at the edge of the earth.
