I own a pair of HS8's and admittedly everything I play through them sounds exceptionally crisp and capable of reproducing a wide range of frequencies, especially for speakers with such relatively small tuneable ported enclosures. I personally think the HS8's performs well enough on their own, to negate the need for an additional subwoofer, except perhaps in larger venues. I found the HS8S subwoofer somewhat overwhelming in a small sound studio. Thanks for sharing. 👍
You are the man. I wanted to hear HS5 paired with a guitar interface, this was perfect. I got a ik axe i/o solo and now I want to get studio monitors (but no hs8s subwoofer). Ty for the demonstration of both options!
When the HS8 is being discussed, you will see the HS8 in the background on the left and right of your desk. When he plays his guitar to test the HS8, the HS8 is not on the desk, but the HS5! This video Yamaha test is FAKE!!!!
OMG...this is exactly what I have been looking for!! Been wrestling with what to do as between these 3 monitors and possible combo with the Sub. I am replacing my Way vintage Yamaha passive 8 ".... but was worried about the size/ massive depth of the modern HS8s, and was considering going with 5s or 7s and the Sub. But now I am going to stick with the HS8s,,, see how they do for a while,, then maybe add the sub later for overall listening or mixing if I think I need it. Thx so much for doing the exact review and comparison that I was wishing was out there !!!! And your personality and descriptions couldn't be more perfect !!! THX!
This was really useful! I'm happy this video exists because either way i wouldn't have been able to hear the difference between different monitor sizes for playing guitar
I listened to lots of tunes on the Yamaha hs8's and I never realised how poorly mixed and mastered some were. The ones that were mixed and mastered by pros really sounded amazing on them. Your guitar sounded amazing through them and thanks for the video.

Is it me or in the part where you are demonstrating the HS8's you have the HS5's on the desk behind you...? Great video btw! I am expecting my HS8's tomorrow.
That's because I recorded the take monitoring with the hs5, but then I mic'd the different speakers. So basically you're watching the same take but the audio si recorded with different monitors.
Great video Luca 🙂. I'm looking for a set of studio monitors at the moment to improve my home productions/mixing and this was very helpful. It came across on the video that the sub wasn't of much benefit when just playing the guitar alone but obviously had that extra punch when the backing track was played. I think the choice out of the three - HS5/HS7/HS8 - would probably whittle down to room size and how well treated it is. My room is approx 2.2m wide and 3.2m long with no acoustic treatment......my guess is that the HS5's would be more beneficial for a small space. You have a great set up in your studio. I'll take a listen to Lynx Eye as well. ps: Congratulations to Italy for getting to the knockout phase of Euro 2020 😃
Thanks man, I’m glad you appreciated the video. Yeah, I think you came to the right conclusions, the hs5 should be fine for your room, let me know if it will work out good. We’ll see how far we can go with the team, we hope for the best :)
@@TheGuitalian can I ask a question about condenser microphones? I'm looking for one to record vocals and to record acoustic guitar. Any recommendations?
I use a AKG p180 if I’m not mistaken. I heard good things about rode stuff as well. Honestly I’m not that picky about that, I think you can do great things with a 100-200 dollars/euro mic :)

Very helpful video. I’m looking into getting a kemper and want some good sounding monitors to use at lower volume. I play at home but have a family so I can’t crank the volume. Seems like the HS5 might be right for me.
Ciao Luca Great video. I'm about to enter into the monitors world and I found this video very informative. Always have been more into guitar amp user. I'm in doubt about between the hs5 and hs8. Are you still with your HS5 or you changed to HS8? If you didn't change the hs5 might I ask why? Grazie!
It was always the same video clip, because it’s the video of the same recording. Then I Mic’ed up the different speakers with the same direct recording track, otherwise the performance would have been different every time
I play Amplitube/Tonex into HS7s and they are great. A bit big... probably a bit OTT but oh well... Don't miss my real amps. Cpuld swap them for HS5s which are probably more appropriate for the sized room but the sound is great.
@@fruitykrueger about a 3x4m room. I haven't bothered with a proper setup maybe one day. They are barely a foot from a window on a desk about a meter apart on either side of a computer screen. I wheel my chair back maybe 1.3m from the desk so they are pointing staight at me to play if that makes sense. Having all those things in a perfect world like no less than 1.5m from a wall and the tweeters be the exact same height as your ears will make a difference but not that big of a difference.
Many thanks for this video! Being a guitarplayer this is exactly what I was looking for! I am considering the HS5 but it also seems to have a lack of heights compared to the bigger ones. Which I didn't expect to hear. (only expected lack of bass) The HS5 sounds kind of flat. Did you notice that as well in your room? Or is the difference caused by just the difference in volume levels in the room when recording? (maybe the microfoon was less sensitive at lower volume levels?) I agree the HS8 sounds the best! (waaaay better than the HS5...... and indeed 'nicer' than the HS7)
Thank you for this video. I was always wondering how it would sound through studio monitors. but I couldn't found any video. I play through my headphones and it sounds pretty good, but sometimes I'd like to play through studio monitors. Probably I'll buy some in near future )
I was wondering the same thing....i always use headphones...and really like the sound,i get...and have been hesitant on buying monitors, because i wasn't sure how my guitar would sound....thou monitors. Nobody has a simple vid,of playing guitar throu a interface, into monitors....
Heyyy Luca, great video, just what I'm loocking for. Listened thru my Krk's 6", your sound is very impresive, thanks of your video, Hs8's are in my point of view. Please, what's pickups are in your guitar?, sounds fantastic !!! 🔝🔝🔝 Greatings from Spain dude 💯
It's interesting you say HS8 is a little bit intimidating after years of using HS5. I'm using multimedia speaker with 3.5" woofer. Imagine my shock when I see HS8. This video is really what I'm looking for. As a hobbyist guitarist, who plays 100% using amp sim, IR, and backing track, your explanation is really useful for me. At first, I thought HS8 will be to big for my needs. Listening to your explanation, HS8 will be my choice. I won't buy the subs since it isn't useful.
Can you keep your backing track volume independent from your guitar sound? So far I have a focus right solo and amplitube 5 I hope my question makes sense. Thanks
Hey man thanks for this video. What would you think about the HS3 taking into consideration that the room would be small and neighbours might complain with volume issues?
Always great watching your reviews. I have a question, I'm a practicing guitarist, while I am in my room. Do I only need one of the HS8 or do I need to buy both. I have the iLoud Micro Monitor speakers and they sound ok. I am looking to speaker with a little more clarity and just a little more bass to it.
well, HS8 are very big, you'll have a lot more bass than the micro monitor. However I'd always go with the stereo pair, as long as you use ambience stereo effects such as reverbs and delays
Great video! How are HS8 with sub for listening to music? Some people say they are very flat and boring. That they are not punchy or anything. Like, i want to listen to metallica for example and enjoy it
Audio monitors are not really designed for listening pleasure, but for listening analysis. I personally use monitors for listening also, but that’s just because I don’t have an alternative dedicated space for listening music at the moment. I’m not an expert in that matter also. Anyway, every time I listen to music I’m pretty much analyzing it all the time, so it’s fine 😂
@@TheGuitalian but are you enjoying music? Are they punchy? Or are they super boring to the point that you are not satisfied with just listening on them? Thats what i asked
Thanks for these, been looking for Yamaha HS demos for guitar, this video really nailed it for me, I have question though, does the HS5 sound good with effects and not get muddy? clean chorus and distorted with chorus? I just wanted a stereo output for a change and I'm a sucker for the that 80's tone, Thanks man
Can't we get good sound unless we turn the HS8 volume up too much? I don't have any neighbors, but my parents at home can only handle me playing loudly during the day :D Of course, it's not enough to make the house loud. At night low volume or use headphone. I think the presets we do at low volume at home may sound different on stage.
Amazing video Luka! Does it work well if I plug my Moore GE200 directly in a HS7 for exemplo. I used to playing only in my room. Best reguards my friend!!
Question / Hello, I play the acoustic guitar as an amateur, I sing and I sometimes also use a drum machine and this exclusively at home in my office (13FT X 9FT). Today I sound all this with my Marshall AS50D amp. It sounds good but I'm afraid of damaging my amp. This is why after several opinions and after watching your video, I plan to equip myself with two Yamaha HS5 monitoring speakers and a Yamaha MG06X table. Can you tell me if this equipment would fit for this?
It’s something like Millennium 180, I can’t really remember the exact name. Nice desk, but the height is a bit weird. I had to put everything (mouse and keyboard) on the keyboard shelf otherwise it would causes me back pain using them
Great video! Bro, please help... i want to play guitar in my bedroom, what do you think about JBL 305p? Flat sound of monitors aren't cool to listen? I'll play with a Nux mg30
Are the HS5 monitors a good choice for playing guitar through amp sim software? I have no interest in recording, I just want a good sound when playing in a small room at quite low volume. Does anyone have any experience of other monitors for said purpose?
Yes they would, if you have a nice room, big enough and maybe acoustically treated. Otherwise, the small hs5 can do the job pretty fine. If you want something in the middle, kali Lp6 are a great choice, I’m using them right now
Well, I'm no professional by any stretch of imagination. But studio monitors are not supposed to sound good? They're supposed to give you a true reflection of the music you play, so what you record and mix sounds good in other systems aswell? In the car, with headphones, on your cell phone and on a big stereo system. I'd really like a pair of small monitors, like 4-5" but I'm afraid my mixes will be to bass heavy when playing them outside of the studio?
They don't have to sound good, but to sound "true" in order to make any adjustment you need on your mix. Regarding your concern yes, that's a bit risky and you can fix it double checking with a pair of headphones
Hey man, I am looking to buy these because I feel like when I plug a backing track into my guitar amp it doesnt sound good mixed with my guitar because the amp is not FRFR, do you think if I bought these it would be a much better experience in terms of a more natural sound and a better balance between the backing track and guitar.
I meant that usually you should pass through an audio interface. My signal chain is Guitar - Amp - reactive load - audio interface - speaker If you just have the guitar and the speakers it's not enough
I am thinking of ditching my amp and replacing it with a studio monitor since I have a multieffects that has amp & cab sims is this a good idea or should I stick with my amp?
I play with a multi effect Boss core 1000GT and I have a rhytm player Boss RC-10R. It is very good with phones but on my amp it is so bad. Can I replace my amp by HS8 ?
Just a heads up none of the Yamaha HS monitor line should be placed on their sides. They're meant, and designed, to be placed upright. It doesn't ruin the sound but you will diminish the quality to some degree. Definitely wouldn't record with them like that. There are monitors that can be placed on there sides like this but Yamaha doesn't make any.
I went this route recently, neural dsp plugins gave me the guitar sound i wanted at home. Bought myself Presonus Eris E5 really happy with the sound im getting.
By "organic" what do you mean? Please stop using that word for music production and art stuff. Big brands such as native instruments use "organic" as an adjective for their plugins... 😂 sorry but you're not using the word properly. Cheers.
The moment you discuss the HS8 you will see the HS8 in the background on the left and right of your desk. The moment you play your guitar to test that HS8, the HS8 is not on the desk, but the HS5! This video Yamaha test is FAKE!!!!
Ahaha it's not fake dude, the VIDEO is always the same for all the 3 speakers, because I wanted to use the SAME performance. THEN I mic'd up the different speakers PLAYING BACK what I recorded in the VIDEO. You are watching me playing all the time because I thought that watching a video of a mic standing still would have been boring. I don't understand why should I spend hours and hours of my time making a fake video that would have no point at all :)
