Hello, I am not sure if someone has ever asked you this question but what metering mode do you use the most? I seen where northern borders (street photographer) use center on A7RIV and one other street photographer use highlights metering mode for snow/sunsets. I saw that the newer Sony bodies carry one more metering mode option.
@@TigaWould Thank you and yes I agree, I want to film a more portrait photography orientated comparison as well but was debating between the R6 or R5. I also think the R5 is probably a more fair comparison with the A7IV!
@@chrisgresham7048 It really depends on the lighting, in my Tips to improve your natural light portrait photography video I uploaded a couple of months ago I share what metering modes I use depending on the situation.
Hey Julia, I just got a one quick question. I just got a new Sony a7iv, lens 85mm 1.4 gm. I just got started, I'm shooting Manual mode. I was wondering if I need my 85mm to switch Af mode to Manual mode 🤔 . or it's doesn't matter which mode to use for the Lens.
Great video, I love your settings. I'm a noob with the Sony and overwhelmed trying to figure it out still. Been in to photography for years but kinda fell out of big cameras after iPhones got really good, but I'm back and loving the a7IV, thank you !
Hi Julia, if I am not mistaken, you said you were using an aperture ring on your lenses to set the aperture instead of the back dial. Is that correct and what is the benefit? Thank you!
Yes, I only use the aperture ring if it comes standard on the lens. But it's good because it frees up an extra button on the camera that I can use as a shortcut for another function.
Julia do you have any problems with eye Af, there are more and more Threads on different Forums with ey AF problems like front focus back focus - Focus not on the eye even the green fiel is on the eye. Any issues for you
Thank you for the video Julia. It would be great if you could make a tutorial video on how to transfer the files to NAS, it seems useful for quick transfer!
One thing I've found that's made switching between eye/face AF and normal focusing modes (if you're not a back button focus user), is instead of mapping an eye AF button, map a button to turn on and off Face/Eye Priority in AF. Eye AF you can just leave on permanently. That way, you don't really have to switch focusing modes....just use that button. For example, I typically use tracking small spot as my AF mode. If I want to the camera to automatically focus on eyes/face, I'll simply hit the button I programmed to Face/Eye Priority in AF, which in my case is the AF-ON button. If I want to choose focus and turn off Face/Eye AF, I'll simply tap the AF-ON button, then focus as usual with the shutter button. Keeps me from having to change from Wide area to spot, etc, and allows me to change from focusing on eyes to whatever I want, in an instant.
This is a great tip. I just got my A7iv yesterday and am finding the number of different settings difficult to break down when trying to shoot quickly. I'll assign that AF button to Eye priority and see how I go with it.
Great video… now I want the A7IV. QUESTION: Isn’t Variable shutter to overcome banding caused by artificial light flicker? I think rolling shutter is that jello effect when you move the camera during video or panning.
Hi Julia! Long time subscriber and I LOVE your channel! I finally took the plunge and converted from Nikon to Sony. The menu system and customization is so different and more detailed with the Sony. I really appreciate this video!!
So apart from the Samyang 50mm II, you didn't notice any issues with eyeAF and the A7IV? Like front-focus where the camera says it focused on the eyes and it's actually the nose or eyebrows that are in focus ?
No, I personally haven’t had any other issues with 3 different camera bodies and other lenses. The samyang lens I was also having issues on the A7III so in that case it was the lens instead of the camera bodies.
@@juliatrotti Thanks for your answer. Even with close portraits at wide aperture? That's when the eyeAF issue is the most obvious, with larger portraits it doesn't occur for me... You can check the Instagram account we set to display various examples : @sonya7iveyeafissue 🙂
@@charlotterazon2032 yes I’ve shot lots of closeup pics like that. I saw the group and even tried the tests again to see if I could help contribute to the conversation, but I don’t have any issues with mine.
Hi, I am using a Sony A7iv, and I am having a problem. Its autofocus works fine, but for the past few days I can't see the tracking box on the face or even eye... it has disappeared. Any idea how to bring it back?
Great video, appreciate you sharing all of them here! Anyway we could buy or request for a SAVED Sony Setup file so we can just download and LOAD it on our A7IV??? Thanks in advance.
Hi, I have a Sony MkV and I’m having difficulty getting sharp sharp photos, It’s been difficult and I don’t know what to do.. any suggestions ? Tysm 🫶🏼💕😊
nice video tutorial. Hope you can help me. I have the Sony A7 IV and every time I take a picture there are so clear images. However, if I want to review it on the camera monitor and hit the zoom button or the magnifying glass, it shows all the way zoom and the image is pixel led or grainy, I do not know exactly the word I am trying to explain. Hope you can understand and help me to fix that or explain. I see some of youtube videos like your self if you review them in the lightroom and zoom it. It's so clear.. is it just from the camera monitor or the image. I am shooing in RAW and the highest setting.
What are the advantages of shooting in Mechanical shutter mode over electronic? I have read some of the differences online, but when I set my Sony to Electronic I have no sound. I guess that would be a blessing in some cases, but it feels weird not hearing anything out of my camera in that mode. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Recently I have purchased Sony a7iv and the battery is draining very fast when I am shooting still image. Can you make a tutorial video about how to save battery of a7iv.
Hi Julia! How do you set your WB when starting a session? Do you use just the presets on camera, or a grey card, color checker, etc? Thanks for your videos, I love them.
I always have my white balance set to K. I use a grey card if I am doing e-commerce or a situation where the colours need to be correct. Otherwise I usually use white balance creatively. For the back of the camera I will set it somewhere around 5000-6000K outdoors so it looks nice on the back of my screen when showing my client photos. Then I will adjust as needed in post on my computer.
Quite a handy guide for setting up your custom buttons. Especially if you've upgraded from a A7III series and having a hard time getting things in place. Great work Julia! :)
Thanks! Yeah there are a few extra buttons on the A7IV and some extra shortcuts that we didn't have on the A7III. Took me a little while to get it set up the way I like, but I'm happy with it now!
Fantastic video Julia. I like your settings very much. I think they will help a lot during wedding photoshooting . Do you have any PDF with all those settings?
Hi Julia- I'm confused with tracking sens with one thing... If 1 is sticky to one person, why do you use 5 when wanting to be responsive to different distances when you have a person coming towards you (different distances). Could you clariify please? Thank you!
Hi, Miss Julia! I purchased the A7IV on release day, and was finally able to give it a test run yesterday. 100% of the time, I shoot in Electronic Shutter mode. Come to my surprise, Electronic Shutter runs on silent with no option to turn it on. The shutter click sound is only when one is on Mechanical Shutter. With my A7C 7 A1 I have options to turn the sound on & off whilst on ES. Why is that? I've watched your, Jason Vong, Manny Ortiz, Tony & Chelsea Northrup's reviews but was never addressed. So wit that said, do you get the shutter clicking sound while on Electronic Shutter, or is it just my camera, since I can't find anything on RU-vid or on Google in regards to it. I'm very reliant on that shutter click sound. :)
I honestly don't do anything special, I still use my Lightroom presets that I've been using from the A7III and they work fine on A7IV files too. I also shoot with a standard picture profile. I have lots of photoshoot behind the scenes with the A7IV now up on my channel where I share the unedited then edited photos if you wanted to have a look!
I just got sony a7 iv but for some reason i don’t see some options when I press Fn button and I’ve heard long time ago to never update firmware for camera or body and that’s why i never did.
All hobbies have their own language and terminology that people in the hobby need to learn so they can keep up with discussions. To answer your question IBIS stands for "in-built image stabilisation", meaning the camera compensates for small movements when hand held at slow shutter speeds (think less than 1/100th of a second) in dark environments where flashes aren't allowed and have to rely on what natural light there is.
I had the same hesitation between setting up the back wheel for ISO or WB. It sounded appealing to have all controls up there, but I also choose to use it for WB only in video mode (better access, especially when on gimbal) and keep it as exposure comp in photo mode, simply because I shoot often in Aperture priority, with auto ISO, when I'm shooting events, festivals and outdoor concerts... So to access to the WB setting in photo mode, I actually set it to the record button, which also allows me to keep the layout consistent with my A7III in that case 😊
When you were going through the different settings it just reminds me that there are so many things I like on Sony cameras that I just miss on my Nikon cameras 😄
Hi Julia. I hope you are doing great. I have a question. What strobe light is good and compatible with Sony a7iv. I just bought the camera and could not find answers.
Thank you for the video, but unfortunately the a 74 has a huge front focus issue for the iris which for some reason no one on RU-vid is talking about, but the Internet is full off. In specific forums you can see lots of people and lots of images that show the problem. On RU-vid, they all tell you how great the camera is but in fact it’s not. I bought it in 2023 and have the latest firmware update and a friend of mine bought the same camera and we both have the same problem. You can see exactly that the focus is on the iris, but the image is blurry on the iris and sharp in front of the iris. I don’t understand why RU-vidrs don’t tell about this and make it a secret so I bought this camera because of the great reviews and now I have to deal with the problem. I never had this problem is with Canon R5 switched to Sony in order to get the variety of cheaper lenses but now I am extremely disappointed and will change back to Canon.
super tuto. At 4.55 you mention AEL is set to eye af to quickly jump from small flexible point to wide with eye AF. I did the same and it is very powerful. BUT I don't find that "eye af" function on a7rv to switch between spot on "yashika" and toggle to wide eye AF. Do you know which one to use instead (subject recognition,...) ?
Hi, just a newbie question for you. What is your recommended Auto Focus setting for a Sony Camera (I have a Sony A7S III) for Talking Head Videos. I have tried Wide, Large Spot and even Centre, and I seem to have some strange things going on with corners moving in and out. I would really appreciate what you use for your Talking Head videos (like this one for example)? thanks for your help here Julia .. great Videos, and I am a fan.
I have a6600. Shutter button is set for focus mostly Real Time Traking. EYE AF is set on back button. Push only when needed. C2 for WB. Real Time tracking is always on just catch the object and half press the shutter and recompose.
What software are you using to convert xavcs files? I recently bought a a7iv and I'm not sure how to convert to android/laptop format without losing quality. Any help is appreciated!
Need to save those pennies... Love the Upgrades. As for metering do you tend to keep on centered or does this change as to your lighting conditions i.e. backlit portraits
I change it depending on the lighting on the day and what kind of shots I'm getting. In my Tips to improve your natural light portrait photography video that I uploaded a couple of months ago, I share what metering modes I use depending on the lighting situation if you wanted to hear more.
I just bought sony a7iv and the first channel I am looking for to setup my camera setting is your channel. Such informative and so cute too. Love to see your smiling, I think I have fallen in love. Really hope to meet you in person one day. Continue making movie ms cutie. Greeting from Malaysia!
Hi Julia,God job like always ,I would like you to do the same with A7Rm2 if you have ONE with 85 mm GM 1.4 its the camera and lens that I use the most,to be very honest with you I know I lot about cameras you wanna know ...the reality ? Turning them on and off I have to look for the switch,,,I bought few lens in 2017 and the a7rm2 all new síntese them maybe I snap one hundred photos if I did,,,I know its a way to see in the camera a Manny photos I take with it.i have few nice pictures taken but I let the camera choose and its no the way can you help just a bet I am sure lot of people other like me and maybe a lot less ...help me them T Y....for instance eyes out focus I like to know to do that
Hi Julia , which is better nikon z6ii or the sony a7 iv . i see that both almost have the same autofocus settings , now i over autofocus although i've tried z6ii not always catches the focuse perfectly . which is best regarding the pm's hours of clear photos and less grain , low light and colour science
Hi Julia, you mentioned you use ftp transfer feature of the camera. Did you update the a7iv firmware to version 2.0? If yes, did you have issues with the ftp transfer? The reason I'm asking is that I was using ftp transfer with no issues up until the update. But now I'm dealing with the issue where some of the photos are partially transferred to the NAS. I haven't seen anybody mentioning this issue on the internet yet. I'm trying to figure out if that's a really firmware related issue or unique to my device. Take care!
I just bought my first modern Sony camera, a6700, and was quite overwhelmed by sheer number of menu folders and settings complexity. Thank you, that helps immensely.
I really want an a7 IV. If you're the kind of person who needs a camera like this professionally, it's an absolute steal. I, of course, am an amateur. At some point, I might pick up a used a7 III when the prices drop more. And that's still a hell of a camera.
I like the buildup but i have a hard time following along in my camera becuase you dont really show the Quick button menu and I cant find what you mean. In my langauge the terms are different. Would help if i saw the menu so the number is visible
The AEL is a nice one. Have to re-watch this one in slow motion to take notes 😊 So what do you use to record your screen when shooting a model outdoors.. looks like a Benbox on your camera but that one doesn’t have antennas I think so I’m not sure 😉 The first and last shots in the video really look identical. Even the make up 👌 Wouldn’t have noticed it!!
I LOVE that AEL shortcut, saves a lot of time. With the A74 you can use the Sony app to record now which is what I'll be doing as its a lot easier/more reliable. And thanks, tried to match it as well as possible! Curly hair never dries the same way twice so I thought I'd mention it just in case someone notices haha ;)
@@juliatrotti Haha, now that I wouldn’t have noticed! I only have the A7S3 here for video but I do also have a Polish partner in crime :) You two are doing a fantastic job, really!!!!
Nice video. Thanks. Question: why do you have 'Release w/o Lens' enabled? I'm trying to think of a use case for that other than when attaching the camera to a telescope.
Hi Julia 👋 I am using a7ii but I am not satisfied on the outofucus that I get. I tried different lenses but it is realy hard to get sharp pictures, do you have any tips for that?
