Thanks, great review. I didn’t expect there to be as much difference and it makes me all the more tempted to try a Soto.

Yeah the SOTO pulled out all the stops in the wind and cold. I think it could melt a good amount of snow which could be useful in the weather we are having at the moment.... ATB and really appreciate your support and comments. Tom

Thanks for taking the time to do an outside test boil, far more realistic comparison and the results were markedly different.

It was a Pocket Rocket which made me quit canister-mounted gas stoves and move to an alcohol/cone setup. Not because there was anything wrong with the Pocket Rocket, but I'm a clumsy f***** and the inherent instability of the canister-top design cost me several lost dinners and finally a torched tent - if you knock over a lit gas burner it becomes a highly effective blow torch!
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 Год назад
Hi David, thank you for your comments.. Yes the canister tops are a pain on un even ground. I am currently considering a remote canister stove for this very reason. It can be a real balancing act and if you are using one of the 100g small gas cylinders then even more so. Not a fan of the canister support stands as its just another thing to bring or manage and I like to keep my gear simple and un complicated... ATB Tom
@davids9549
@davids9549 Год назад
@@TOMHEANEY100 Spot-on Tom, that's exactly how it was - the tent fire episode prompted me to look at other options, including the canister support stand (a safety improvement, but I still knocked the pot over), and the remote gas stove - an Alpkit Koro which I've hardly used because I found I like my alcohol setup so much. The Koro is 123g so pretty much the lightest of its kind out there, although for just a few grams (and a few £s) more you can have the Kovea Spider which gets better reviews.

The king of reviews! Another detailed and helpful review Tom! Oh it's Pete here, I rebranded my channel a little while ago. I just love the natural look of your outdoor shots, I'm curious what colour profile you use when you film, and do you do colour correction in post? Cheers Tom!
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 3 года назад
Hi Pete I hope you are well and the very best of luck with the rebranding. I actually don't use a colour profile as I think they are over rated and add to the workflow in post. I do set WB manually though, but always learning so might trust the camera more in the future. Always worried that the camera will change WB mid shot which is harder to fix that if I need to adjust the whole clip! I add a fraction of saturation and exposure in post as I like to under expose slightly when filming. They say that shooting in a colour profile gives higher dynamic range but even when you watch major films on the tv you often see blown out Skys! Certainly for YT I don't think its worth it! Thank you for your kind words and good luck with getting out in the outdoors. ATB Tom

Thanks Tom. Impressive time in wind for the Soto.. I currently use the original Pocket Rocket with the MSR Titan kettle.. probably going to upgrade to Pocket Rocket deluxe or Soto but am happy with this lightweight combination. Was given my setup in 2010 by a Buddhist monk who was a former Royal Green Jacket so my system has some ‘sentimental’ value to me too 😂
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 Год назад
Hey Simon, than you for sharing your story with the Pocket rocket.. Yeah the others definitely perform better in the wind and will probably simmer better too if needed. I am currently using a Firemaple Polaris Pressure Regulator stove and now actually prefer it to the Soto as its a little more compact and feels more sturty as the pot stands just pull out and dont detach... Best wishes Tom

I appreciate your upload. I'm more of a liquid/Trangia user, but, when I'm out for just an "overnighter", I use the Soto Amicus stove along with the Soto thermostack cook set. Both the Windmaster and Amicus are brilliant little stoves. Thanks again for the review.

I have the pocket rocket 2 and it’s been a reliable little stove. Gotten good preformance with a 1L kettle as it seems to not like the narrow 500-700 ml cups. Usually take a baking tray wind screen. Now I am tempted to get the Soto Fusion Trek… sadly the price of it here in Norway is diabolical.

Hi thank you for watching and commenting on this and a number of my other videos. Soto make great stoves and just had a look at the fusion trek, it looks great and will be a reliable investment. Definitely the Soto stover are better designed and built than the MSR'S. ATB Tom

Not a comparison, the Soto windmaster needs to be compared the Msr pocket rocket deluxe.. I have the Soto, a good friend has the Msr , no real difference.
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 3 года назад
Thank you for your comments Andy, I try to make a video that is interesting and my point here is to show the difference in an outdoor and indoor environment that the extra features of the Soto or in fact the Deluxe makes... To compare two products that are so similar like you state would potentially show minimal differences with these types of tests. Personally I looked at purchasing the pocket rocket 2 or the WindMaster and I was wanting to know if the more expensive WindMaster performed better and was worth the extra money to me.. So this was why I made this particular comparison. ATB and at the end of the day all comments help me in the future to consider my content. Tom

I think this is more interesting as windmaster beats Pocket Rocket deluxe slightly i guess…Pocket Rocket 2 is highly efficient but needs to be used in mostly windfree area, than it needs as well less gas then the windmaster. When you have no proper wind islation the effiency of the pocket rocket 2 is conpletely gone and the windmaster takes the crown…
