My very first job was at a tv news station, and everything was from Porta Brace. It was crazy how much abuse those things could take while still staying in great shape and protecting a lot of expensive gear. 👍

An alternative to a pelican case are the pro tool storage systems from brands like Ridgid, Milwaukee, DeWalt sold at Home Depot. These are stacking cases with a deep bottom case that has wheels and an extending handle like rollaboards. Not as heavy duty as Pelican but designed to live in the bed of a pickup truck with jack hammers, sledges and lumber. I bought the Ridgid stack and love it. IMHO, Ridgid has a slightly heavier gauge of plastic and a slightly simpler design with fewer tabs or nubs to break off. The stack has an 22" x 13.5" X 18" deep base with sturdy wide wheels and a heavy duty handle designed to be twisted. Next is a 12" deep tool box and a 6.5" deep organizer case. There is a 13.5" deep milk crate size open top basket for bulky and last minute items. Each case has has rubber gasket in the lid and fold up latches that latch the case to the case above it and snap back in the lower box when not in use. The latches are sturdy 3/16 steel wire with molded rubber so you can use them as carrying handles. I use the bottom case for cables and heavy items, the tool box larger items like pouches, wireless gear, smaller lighting, etc. and the organizer for small items and cameras. Three drawbacks: The organizer has a plastic insert panel that closes off the lid. Remove the panel and you regain almost 2" of space. The cases have a large bright orange Ridgid logo. Some black spay paint took care of that. If you stack more than 3 cases, then the rollaboard handle does not have sufficient clearance for my knuckles and I have to hold the handle palm out which is awkward. If you are looking for a portable rollaboard case solution that holds lots of weight, this is the ticket.
Love these type of videos, could you also show us how do you organize your files? Foto and video footage, that would be amazing as I'm trying to do this by myself and I'm not good at it at all 😅
Well, create two folders on your Desktop or in My Documents, one named Photo and one Video. Then create subfolders for each camera, for each shoot, for each category (Stock footage, VFX, Titles etc.), for each single project. I recommend you use a separate folder for all your finished videos/projects (all your portfolio and achievements in one place.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You mentioned the weight of the Pelican 1510. They also have a lightweight line of cases: Pelican Air - just as durable. The Air 1535 is light version of the 1510. Thanks for the great channel - I've learned a lot!
I bought the 1510 years ago and it is truly a fantastic case. I just moved my BMPCC 4ks and their perspective add-ons over to it and I still have room left over. If you want to invest in something that will last forever, this is the case. Great video! I'm going to have to try those wraps for when I travel.
I've always ran pelican cases even as daily carry, I brought a small 1300 around with me to Europe, my main is now a 1450 which needs new dividers and a 1430 for long lenses. I do have a few small soft cases I can use but those tend to be for just if I'm walking a lot on set. for those who want a lighter and slightly larger carry on the Air 1535 is lighter and has more space inside but is still a carry on.
*I was hesitant to spend that much on a cube of plastic, but dang was it worth it. This thing is wonderfully made. It's solid as a rock on the outside and soft as pillow inside. I love the water tightness being on photo shoots with all my gear in it. I'm also tall and it's hard to get a rolling case with a handle that is easy to pull along... this one is awesome and travels a lot on those wheels. I expect the price is partly because it seems like it will outlast me.*
I always love your videos Caleb, if I can make some suggestions for what I use for dirt cheap: - Toiletry bags: I got one at Goodwill for $3 and I put all my SSD, apple mouse, cables and chargers in it so its not loose in the backpack. sunglass cases are sometimes free and good for protecting a wireless mouse if you need to travel or also small SSD drives. I have a small Tascam lav that I also keep in a hardshell sunglass case for protection - Baseball Bat Bags: I got two also at Goodwill for $3 a piece literally, I put tripods and monopods in them. some come with wheels and its super easy. - Golf Travel bag: basically a huge duffel bag with wheels (also a goodwill purchase, $4) that can hold your big bulky grip gear (keep door stoppers in them for easier moves in buildings!) - This is not dirt cheap but the Domke bags are great for light duty photography or shooting as well. cheers everyone.
Agree with the Domke. I use it on 1 camera with lens and just throw it in a backpack. Also accumulated a ton of camera bags. In the end i just use a 20 yr old Jansport + domke wraps
I really like the Manfrotto CC camera bags. They are really compact, easy to carry and I take it everyday with me. We have a large and a small one for our DVX200 and CX10.

Used the same backpack and Pelican 1510 for 4 or 5 years now, but my weakness is definitely small pouches and organizers for inside. Really like the Topo Designs pouches for carrying microphones and all my laptop accessories.
I have the canvas shoulder bag and it's fantastic. I'm in the UK and the only place I could get it was from Tokyo. Customs duty was more than the price of the bag.
I totaly agree about you bags. Got similar my self. About thee last huge roller/bags you can get similar from Think Tank. I will purchase the smaller one, Think Tank Airport Security V3.0 with wheels as my "camerabag on whels"
Gotta say I love my Arco Doctor Bag. The only other Doctor style I could find at the time was Tenba but they were hella expensive. The Arco is very well made and makes a SLR/Mirrorless freelancer look a lot more professional than a backpack.
One that I use for carry my monitor, second camera .. or camera en lenses it's the Kattee Messenger Bag, for the principal stuff I use the Tamrac Explore x7 for more than 5 years and still it's great, but no longer manufactured...
I've found the Pelican 1020 Microcase to be the perfect size for my Samsung Portable SSD T5 drives. One case can snugly fit four drives and the usb cable necessary to use them with the BMPCC4K.
Great video as always Caleb. I've got a small Domke wrap and its so useful. For pouches I like Tenba. For bags, I really like the Cinebags line....LOVE my Cinebags backpack.
My problem is the bigger backpack, the more stuff I pack. I cant be the only one that do that? Edit1: I now use a climbing backpack, and stuff crap into it to its about to break. I pack small bags into a big backpack. Not sure if can get Domke Wraps in Europe. That will save me some space. Or ill pack more .-)

F-Stop gear is by far my favorite camera bag company. I do a lot of travel for doc work so having something that's designed as both a modular camera bag and a rugged back packing back pack is pretty cool. You should definitely check them out! :)

Am I the only one who repurpose bags and pouches I get when I buy something? 😁 Case in point, my DJI Osmo Mobile 3 gimbal case is now my battery case. The pouch I got with the same gimbal is now my small cable pouch (for TRRS to TRS adapters, etc) and my Aputure lav mic pouch now houses my "gadgets" like USB SD card reader stick. I'm too cheap to buy new stuff.
hey Caleb love your videos listen I think you should do it best bag budget version for the everyday filmmaker you know the type of guy that carries 180d and one M50 camera and has a few lenses like a sigma art and a nifty fifty and they may be a few cheap budget lights and probably a few microphones someone you know in the beginning of the somebody that is trying to beat them bills T-Mobile and the most effective in the same time I myself in this category and I find out how time can't find the perfect backpack and I did buy the protactic 450 and it doesn't fit me well because it's too heavy makes me cry too much stuff
I really like messenger bags, but I'm too scared to use them for gear. They always end up slamming against door frames, stair railings...and cars when I'm riding my bike. I've always had to use a backpack to keep everything secure.
Definitely love my Wandrd Prvke bag. It's so aesthetically cool and holds a BOATLOAD. Also, dangit those Arco video bags are on sale until 5/21 on B&H. OH NOES.

Amazed by your video like always. O have been watching you ever since I started college in a Film University in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 and I have been purchasing most of the cheap gear that you review. That help me a lot as a film student I wanted to ask (I haven't seen you like take request but) to see if there's a possible way to do a lighting effect (electrical voltage or storm) with cheap or budget friendly film light. How did you like the doctor style bags? I was looking for the Tenba Cineluxe, to replace my pelican case in some situations. OR maybe a backpack, I don't know
Doctor bags are great, but it really depends on how much you plan on running around with it. For serious run n' gun productions you'll probably need a good backpack so you can always have it on you. For productions where you can throw a bag on the floor/ground/table to use at your camera area, doctor style bags are better because they open at the top for quick and easy access to all your gear. As far as doctor style bags go, nobody beats Tenba. Those things are damn near bulletproof and so well-designed. Source: I own a Tenba and it's amazing
Hey Caleb. I have to tell you, those Domke Wraps are the bloody best things I have seen in years! How often are my Peli cases or other flight cases configured for certain things and I get additional hardware that I throw in a bag or backpack.
