You definitely can! I hate how cruisers get sucked into overpaying for hotels because of their shuttle service offerings. Just book the best hotel for you (at the best price) and use ride share, public transport, or private transfer! Ha, thankfully I already have the best job ever (I'm an actual professor). I don't know if I'd want to be sponsored by a cruise line since I am VERY honest in my takes (if you follow me on TT or see my shorts on here you'll see that I'm not shy about showcasing the negatives of the cruise lines), and I wouldn't want to feel stifled.
