Hi. I have two questions about stropping. The first has to do with how often (roughly) do I need to add more compound to the leather strop. Do I just add more compound as and when I think some more compound is needed, or should I do it, say, once every couple of months? The second question is, how should I store the leather stroop? Do I need to protect it from dust etc (so maybe store it in a box or in a plastic bag) or is this something I do not need to worry about? Thanks!
Old post, i know... by any chance if you read this : the manufacturer recommends to sharpen at 20° and then make a few passes at 25°. I dont understand the idea behind this, can you try to explain and tell us what you think of it ? Other than that, even if i have better systems on hand, this is my go-to sharpener, i'm 100% happy with this system : it's quick, portable, easy, and does a terrific job with a bit of stropping of course. And for those interested in the blade size limitations, note that i have zero problems sharpening my chef knifes with it...
Oh, I have seen the vid of a guy, sharpening his 12" Bowie knife on the turnbox. Just more horizontal pulling and less vertical movement. And take 5 minutes more. But it is possible.
The Idahone has longer rods and works well for those chef's knives. Mine has lasted me over 20 years. Important to clean the rods periodically. wish I'd have seen your video about not rolling over the tip, of course youtube didn't exist at the time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
The Lansky Master's Edge with 9" rods is a more capable system and easier for beginners. Much more stable, with a built in hand guard, and it'll handle blades up to 10" with ease. It also has a 17 degree setting for smaller knives and shallow blades like fillet knives. I have a Turn Box as well, but it's only for field use such as hunting trips or a bug out bag. Once you're practiced, the Turn Box will handle honing larger knives with a pull through technique, if you've profiled them properly with the Master system. I find these rod systems are much easier to use than stones, and they also accommodate weird blade shapes like Tracker types that confound a flat stone.
Mine as well. Theres just not much incentive to make videos anymore. The mainstream crap seems to be taking over youtube. Just look at the trending page and you'll see what I mean. Thanks for watching my friend!
@@OUTDOORS55 Ok, I'm going to try to go on my rant . One that makes sense, and not just some rambling tangent. The way I understand it is RU-vid changed the way they compensate the people providing content for our entertainment. This in turn has made it so much more difficult for our Tubers to make a living by creating the videos we love to watch. We cut the cord many years ago and RU-vid and Netflix our our sole source of entertainment now. So with the talent we look forward to watching each week isn't there has us rethinking our decision to pay Google for our premium service. Less incentive to watch RU-vid will eventually cost Google a guaranteed revenue stream. My hope is they wake up and start making it more lucrative for people like you to keep making content for people like us, which keeps us happy and paying customers. I wish all my Tubers I subscribe to can see this so you all know you are important to us, but at least I got this off my chest.
Growing a third arm was the easy part. But deciding which hand to hold the knife was the hard part! Also the sharpening sounded beautiful really good on the ears.
Heresy I know, but I keep the blade on the rod forward and back, I've seen too many people hack into the rod while sharpening. Forward and back makes for an almost mirror like edge.
I love your channel, man. I've been free hand sharpening with stones since I was a kid and self taught through trial and error, but it's nice to find a channel giving some explanations and tips to better refine my sharpening skills. Still need a good strop though
A strop will make a huge difference! You can make them fairly cheap Under $10. They will definitely take the edge to the next level. Thanks for watching my friend!
great idea with clamping it down. i've owned this same setup for a while and although its been decent, i think this will make a big difference. good video. thanks for posting!
Just waiting for the t-shirt saying “Shaving, right off the stones” it’s kinda your catchphrase. Great work. I bought these off the recommendation from your first vid. Cheers!
Damn glad to see you again! I bought that Lansky right after you showed it the first time and I've been using it more than my Lansky guided set, love the ease of use and the wicked edges I can get with it 👍 make some more videos dude!👍🤘
Awesome video Alex, thank you very much. This looks to be a good starting point system for me, it was literally fool proof. Your instructional videos are second to none man, Cheers!
I bought one of these based on your recommendation. I'm a pleb who doesn't cook much and has cheap knives which have become dull as hell. In 5 minutes i managed to make all of them sharp enough to cut vegetables easily again. Thank you !
I only.have 4 t0 5 inch hunting knife blades in my kitchen and I use the tern box from ist day knives arrived from usa factory they ad no sharpness to factory angel I spent bsy be 20min give or take on yet box each knife now they click through steak and open boxed male with o.egfert as long as I keep them sharp !!!! Ik lady
Am a bit confused because the spyderco system works off 30 and 40 degrees ? Why does this one have 20 and 25? I will be sharpening spyder co and and crkt folders
What are your thoughts on the Spyderco Tri Angle Sharpmaker ? I have watched plenty of your videos and see you use a fair few Spyderco knives but never the sharpmaker, is it rubbish compared to the Lansky ? thought it odd you haven't ever done a review or mentioned it given you are very familar with the spyderco brand, keen to hear anyones thoughts on it as I find it a good versatile system, maybe only downside is it was expensive, £70 from memory(not that expensive compared to some systems), thing I like about it is the box it comes with has preset angles but if you turn it over you can use it as conventional stone freehand
I don't see the issue with a long blade. Simply drag it with a smaller stroke. Still better than the other famous lansky system which clamps the knife.
I used this sharpener for 8cr13mov, aus8 and s35vn. Works great, even my ZT0566 with s35vn steel is shaving sharp after a few minutes. I sharpened on 25 degrees :)
Im doing my best with all tips from your video and I cant sharpen my bugout in s30v to cut through standard printer paper smoothly. It can shave my leg but it with paper it starts to cut and then tear it. Do I need strop or something?
In my opinion, the best way to use the Turnbox (or any of the ceramic V systems for that matter) is to re-profile down to 15 degrees on a coarse stone and then use the ceramic rods to apply and maintain a micro-bevel at 20 degrees. With this approach there are no problems using them on larger knives.
Yeah, I like that approach for finer edges with the Spiderco Sharpmaker (which seems to be a slightly upscaled version of this Lansky). After re-profiling a couple of blades on the coarse ceramic rods that came with it, I bought some diamond impregnated rods. Later, I got some of the super fine ceramic rods for finishing. It seems to work well and it’s a fairly fast process. One caveat though is that some of the kitchen knives we owned ended up with fine chipping along the edge. They were from a German made knife-block set we got as a wedding gift and just seemed to be too brittle. I worked these back to a 20° bevel, and after a couple of years sent them to the yard sale box as we picked up knives we really liked over time. I always wondered if those knives would have been best with a 17 or 18° bevel using a fancier system… but the twin devils of time and money will probably make sure I never find out first hand! Cheers!
I just use one hand to sharpen, but I make sure to put my head and body right above the middle between the two rods. That way I won't bias the angle between one side and another. On the white 1000 grit rods, I just start with alternating strokes since I usually don't need to take off too much metal at that point.
You stressed how important it is to hold the correct angle but this beginner system allows for greater error than their other knife sharpening systems that hold the blade angle consistently without human error.
I tried using this for a victorinox Swiss army knife and it just made it duller. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Think I'll just try a stone instead
For many years my main use for rods like this is my Victorinox Swiss army knife. I sharpen almost daily. I hope you got it figured out what you might be doing wrong. It is a great system.
Hey, Nice to see you again! I got the Turnbox too, since I've seen it in your video of it. The way you do it was the axact same way I found it to work the best! But I use a stop afterwards. I found the sharperning of the tip hard on this system though.
I use a strop too most of the time. The tip can be a challenge due to the round rods. Id like to see slightly coarser rods used to help with this. Or perhaps square rods🤔 I do think the system can be improved, but for less then $20 its hard to beat.
Good demonstration, clamp great idea. What do we use for the larger kitchen knives and 'Chinese' chopper. Got chopper in Toronto Canada 25 years ago from Chinese import merchant. Been using flat stones then cover with mineral oil to inhibit rust. Your comments please.
This is probably the best beginner sharpener under $20. But for $30 you can get the work sharp field sharpener which has more capabilities. It helped me build the muscle memory of maintaining an angle.
You star off with the knife in a horizontal position. As you go down, you rotate your hands slightly to cover the length of the blade. So the knife is no longer horizontal. Does that matter? What about keeping the knife always horizontal and as one goes down, moving backwards?
Hello :) Which version of Lansky Turn Box will better for my knives, the one with brown ceramic rods or the one with diamond rods? My knives are: Ontario Rat 2, Kershow Amplitude and Kershow Thermite.
Recently got a TOPS Operator 7 and managed to take a chip out of the edge. Ordered that lansky sharpener online to sort it out as that knife has a curve. I'll see how it goes, though you recommended not to use it on a large knife. We'll see.
A course DMT diamond bench stone followed by the turn box is my favorite 1-2 punch for knives in bad shape, otherwise the turnbox keeps a edge going forever. The white ceramic sticks get your pocket knives & kitchen knives plenty sharp.
I use the Turnbox for all my folders and fixed blades up to my 5.5" Cold Steel folders. For longer knifes up to 12" I use the Lansky Master Edge 5 Rod sharpener. This one gives you two course rods and two fine ones, like the Turnbox, but 9" in length. You get a 5th rod in a kind of triangular shape with 2 different radiusses at the corners plus an edge on the third edge and a nut. The nut is for tips and hooks, the other corners fit into serrations. So you are able to sharpen literally every knife. I sharpen my Cold Steel Trailmaster with it, and my longest blade, a 12" Herbertz Tanto. After the sharpening process a little stropping, and the knifes are hair popping sharp.
Other technique is using the three stones Naniwa gouken for scissors! You hone with the convex side so you have not to maintain angle! Just going horizontal for basic honing! Vertically for grinding!
don't buy it. I checked the angle with a protractor one stick was °17 the other °19 so that's one degree off one side three degrees off on the other. lansky turn box is a fail.
Bro I always come to your videos for advice your the best, the best knife sharpener on RU-vid would love to send you my trodoon otf double blade I can not get that thing to sharpened and it’s 204p steel
Great videos bro. I have a question. You mentioned this system is not good for large chef knives, but how about the Lansky controlled angle sharpening system? Is this one more suitable for long blades?
I've had this box for about a month and have really only used it to tune up a few blades that needed a little attention. I haven't sharpened anything that was actually dull. I was wondering if when your sharpening w/ the coarse rods, does it create a noticeable bur? Also, could I sharpen my Mora on this thing?
Welcome back Alex ! This was the first "system" I bought and I agree it works great, and angle accuracy is important for sure. I've moved on to water stones but both Lansky systems I've bought are excellent and perform as advertised. Take care, Wade
This thing is awesome. Don't have one, but I made one out of a 2x4 and some random ceramic rods around the house. I get a burr on my knife with a diamond stone, then use the ceramic rods to shear the burr off. Razor sharp in no time at all.
I think I've over sharpened knives and ruined the apex, do you have a video on that? Also, my rods don't clean much using a rubber, is there a better way to clean out the ground metal from the ceramic rods? Thanks very much for this video, I've watched a lot of sharpening vids over many years and you have explained things the best.
@@OUTDOORS55 Thanks, good to get confirmation because I've used it the last two times and it did work well, previously I'used jiff cream. I've read that a rubber works but not for me! Do you have any videos about over sharpening where it spoils the apex? Or was I not keeping the angle consistent?
Sharpmaker is much better albeit double the price , but you can get diamond stones to re apex and extra fine for super sharp 👍 can be used like the lansky or also as a bench stone .
Very good Alex! I'm ok at knife sharpening, but no expert. I should sharpen my Mora bushcraft black knife soon. I'll have to look back at your videos for a better way rather than my way. Have you done any backpacking lately?
I did one trip this summer but didnt film it. I’m not much of a hot weather person. Hopefully life will calm down enough this fall and winter so I can get out. 🤞
I really enjoy your videos. I was wondering if you have a video that gives your recommendation for a beginner interested in sharpening everything from edc, bigger fixed blades, and kitchen knives? What would a realistic budget be for this kind of setup? Thanks
Welcome back buddy, I bought a sharpening system I wanted to get your input on. The grizzly razor sharp system. I’ve gotten some great results but I have a difficult time maintains the right angle. I also have tried sharpening some knives that are diving knives and man I don’t know what steel they are but I can’t sharpen the for the life of me!! Let me know your thoughts! Thanks
It depends on the type of steel and the abrasive used. Not familiar with the grizzly system so I can't really comment. Are they cheap knives or expensive?
The abrasive is carbide (might of spelled it wrong) suppose to be 180 grit. They look expensive not sure cause they are my dads old diving stuff. But man they are hard as a rock and I just can get it sharp. Not even to pass paper test yet alone shave. Other knives like kitchen and fillet knives as well as some kershaw pocket knives I easily get them shave sharp in under 3 min. I would love if you can get grizzly to send you the system for a review. It was 50 dollars. Love the speed to get things sharp and how easy it is, well except these 3 diving knives lol
Hey there in the hot place, great to see you are still around. Scary thing about RU-vid channels, us folk watching them form an attachment to the people making the videos but rarely know much about the creators outside of RU-vid. I was beginning to think you might have been taken by a polar bear, walked into the wrong embassy & ended up as dog food or just fallen down a hole. So, nice to see you back & just a comment on this video; really appreciate you sharing something like the holding the knife in two hand and bracing your arms. It may look dorky but it really helped with my Sharpmaker, which I assume is pretty similar to this Lansky system, although perhaps the Lansky has coarser "coarse" rods. And FYI, no other sharpening videos have been as much help as yours in getting my EDC & small kitchen knives usefully sharp. Kia kaha Alex.
Haha nope, still here! Sometimes real life gets in the way of youtube☺️ Thanks for the kind words! I have been pleasantly surprised by how well this little system works. Especially for maintaining edges. A couple swipes and your good to go. No mess or fuss. Straight off the rods its certainly not the sharpest knife in the world, but a great working edge. I believe you can buy coarser rods for it as well. Again, thanks for watching my friend!
I like your videos. They are very useful. The problem with this device if you only used it 20°, then it is possible that you will not engage the Apex if the knife has a micro bevel. Does that sound reasonable?
Use a sharpie to see if you are hitting the apex. I quite often keep applying sharpie to make sure i am apexing during the sharpening process. It works 👌
Thanks for the update. I bought this system after your previous video and have had fair results. I believe that my results could be better, probably due to not so precise angle control. I guess I need to go buy a clamp!
If it looks stupid, but works, then it isn't stupid. Welcome back, Alex. Don't be a stranger, dude. I/we like the work you do and share here on You Tube.
