Update 2: measured on both bpm connect and omron evolv. To be enought you have to use 2 systems to have a sort of feel that you can thrust a bit the BP benchmark values. The data values are average wise the same. I did a 3 run test on the withings bpm connect and the omron evolv. Bpm connect can do that with a custom setting. Evolv not. But pressing 3x times with a little break is not that hard. My biggest positive for the omron is its clumsy proof. If your doubting the pressure on your arms than the evolv wins. I had to use the evolv in order to have a trusty feel of fitting with the bpm connect. Software wise omron connects nice with Samsung health directly. Bpm connect not. Data wise I'm a freak so I like the more open structure of withings health app. And also it syncs via WiFi. Omron wins in my opinion on speed, fitting and trustworthy measurements. Withings bpm connect wins on software and WiFi connection. So 8/10 for withings bmp connect and 9/10 for the omron. Im still not sure if I'm returning the bmp connect.
Valentijn Langendorff it’s good to know that we arrive at similar conclusions, but thank you so much for your input on their accuracy and for taking the time to review them yourself! I’m going to pin this comment so that other listeners might benefit from it as well! Thank you so much!!
Michael Simmons they both get the job done for sure. The biggest factor is if you plan on sharing the device with others in your household then go with withings. Otherwise you could argue your favorite based on personal preference 😄
For me the accuracy and the openness of the data is paramount. I want to have full and free access to my data, put em in an excel sheet, share them with other apps. Like Google Health(fit) etc. So I find myself not able to decide yet. Unsure of the openness.
An accuracy test would be helpful. Comparing home units against what you have at your office. The biggest complaints with home units tends to be issues with accuracy
This may mean the end of sales for most home devices. Europe and the US have institutes that verify accuracy of devices, but the vast majority does not get a seal of approval. However, there are many Omrons which do, even some cheaper ones, and even some of their wrist devices.
@@nearlyretired7005 Like myself, plenty of consumers like to write reviews about their own personal experience with a product to either show support for a good product, or warn about possible quality or performance issues - for the benefit of other consumers. Amazon sells freaking everything. I highly doubt they have some elaborate network of drones with multiple fake accounts employed to write glowing reviews on everything amazon sells. There's plenty of negative reviews as well as positive reviews, and often a mixture of each for the same product. You can gauge the veracity of a review simply by reading it. If it seems "canned," ignore and move to the next. Calling people sheep is not edgy, it's lame. There's 7.8 billion people on this earth, so when you find people with a specific interest commenting about the relatively small range of product options available, you'll see some common themes. Don't be so negative. Peace.
@@matn7743 If you want large corporations to dominate world consumerism then keep buying Amazon products. In the end Amazon will sell every conceivable product in the world - giving the consumer no choice, this is very unhealthy. People should allowed to have choice,it is part of living in a free capitalist society. Have you heard of The Monopolies and Mergers Commission? It is set up to stop corporations from dominating trade. In the end you will have no choice but to buy from Amazon when they control all consumerism and prices. This company makes billions and pays very little tax in proportion to its profits. The tax bill from covid be will massive and the ordinary man pays. not the shareholders of Amazon If you buy from Amazon you make billionares richer at the expense of the ordinary people. Consumers are sleepwalking into buying from this company for a cheaper product without realising they are helping Amazon to become the ultimate world dominating monopoly. Peace to you also.
The Withings BPM Connect was WILDLY inaccurate for me. I had to return it to Amazon. It was generally 25-30 points higher than what was measured at my doctor's office.
There were a few concerns I had for this video. 1. The Omron CAN take 3 measurements and average them. 2. The Amazon reviews for the Wthings is "not that great". The accuracy was a concern. I want to like and buy this because I have other Withings devices but I may have to stay with my Omron for now. You nailed it about the Omron connect app, it was horrible at first. You'd have to keep pairing it.
I'm owning both the Omron Evolv and the Withings BPM connect rigth now for a comparison. And am comparing. As I have the Withings scale the app works great also with the BPM all data. A big up for the Withings' software and freedom (direct wifi upload and great dashboard). Omron has a poor app and no online dashboard. But then again the Omron is very consistent with the measurements. BPM connect : when playing with the height on my arm and pressure of the band it varies a lot. Omron has a better fitting technology and even says a code E1 if it's too loose or E4 error if you move to much and such. I keep both of them right now to compare and will decide after one week which one to keep. So at the moment Omron: wins on trustworty data (consistency) en Withings wins on software (mobile/dashboard). As Omron is a big player in the Bp market I guess they will improve the App soon. Note: sharing data on Android is a bit frustrating : Health mate won't sync BP tot Google Fit nor Samsung Health (only steps). I like to have different perspectives on data. Will update soon.
Valentijn Langendorff yes keep us updated on your findings and thanks for sharing! If all else is the same for you, but you just enjoy using one over the other and it will motivate you to continue checking your bp as a healthy habit then go with that one!
I was real sick with a cold or flu so I went to an urgent care since it was 8pm my doctor was closed. They took blood pressure out of protocol as part of the check up and I was 165/83. They took it on my right arm, over my long sleeve dress shirt, and my arm was hanging down just laying next to my side/hip.... I don't think I was given an accurate reading at all? And they freaked me out. I bought the Omron 3 the very next day and it's consistent around 130/73 I'm 28 yr old, male, kinda lazy office job 6'5" 227lb I'm hoping that dr office reading was off. It's been freaking me out....
Thank you for your videos. You explain a lot of important information and features that's super useful. I'm so curious... You said you tested all of the cuffs you could find. That's crazy! About how many was that?
Hmm... I tried the OMRON EVOLV a few months ago and returned it (I don't recall exactly why). Now I think I should give it another shot. I have the Omron HEM-780 upper arm monitor, an Omron Series 10 wrist monitor, a Panasonic, and a couple others. (BTW... I have had such accurate and consistent readings from the Omron *WRIST* device that I stopped using others to double check. It is 100% in sync with the Omron HEM-780 *_AND_* the Evolv.) But every few years I like to try see what else is out there, hence... Thanks for posting!!!
Traditional blood pressure readings should go 10 points passed not hearing anything with the stethoscope. Then the valve on the cuff gets released. And listen. Of course it’s tough to take on yourself with a stethoscope.
I bought the Withings and had to return it. It does not work. Many people are getting bad readings from this device if you search online. I went to my doctor with the actual device to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong and the readings were way off (always much higher). I tried resetting the device, re-installing etc etc. Same problem. While the Withings looks amazing, feels great, is very compact and well put together, it simply does not work. I am not obese nor do I have very large arms. The reviewers should always use a professional device to compare and try readings on multiple people. If you simply buy this device, install it and use it, yes it feels amazing. But it doesn't work.
Personally I would prefer the Withings one because I already have to carry a lot of medical supplies due to disabilities and the arm cuff I have is bulky and takes up a lot of room. I personally would pay the extra money
Batteries are super best standard because once you have rechargable batteries you don't have to toss it in the trash because batteries don't hold charge anymore
have a withings connect. had the original also. been using it consistently. took it to doctor today and it read consistently 20 points higher on sys/dia. showed me above 180/110. even after the doctor took my measurements that where 20 points lower . even verified that i was putting it on right and sitting right. also read a lot of reviews everywhere about it doing it to others....... can't really trust it imo. will be purchasing the omron evolv to compare then take to doctor.
@@th3drizzl378 So far the omron evolv has been good. within 5 points up or down approx. from doctor readings. not recharable like the withings. 4 triple 's. The newest app is pretty decent on android. give's you reminders and tips so you can get a sample of data to give the doctor. finally got my bp where the doctors wanted it.
Hi there, thanks for your excellent video. I’ve been fitted with an ambulatory monitor from my cardiologist but want a more portable device to wear to see what a usual working week is like for me. Withings looks great - do you know if it will work with my Apple Watch ?
Hi Doctor. My 60 year old mother has continual high blood pressure i meed to monitor. Which machine would you recommend ? Anything that checks for more health conditions would also be useful. Thank you.
Did you compare results between different monitors at the same time to confirm accuracy? I have the BPM Connect and a more traditional tubed device, and have been making consecutive measurements every day to compare. The Whithings seems to consistently under-report deviation from the norm, i.e. the other device reports in the range of 115-145 and the Withings always reports 120-125 at the same time...

In your videos, I haven't heard anything as to WHAT MAKES THESE MACHINES ACCURATE in the first place - from the cheapest to the most elaborate. How do you trust the accuracy, even on regular models that read on the way down (deflation). If money is the issue, and a person doesn't care about blue tooth, apps, transfer of data, portability, and cool looks - if they just want an accurate and reliable model - how do we choose the most accurate wrist model?????
Robert Kushner hey thanks for watching! Through our experience, finding an accurate device is easier than finding an accurate model. No matter what brand you go with, it’s always a good idea to calibrate your device with the one at the hosptial of your doctors office. The more expensive cuffs are so priced because they offer great features like rechargeable mobile sharing etc. in addition to being more durable.
@@KoiAcademy Thank you so much for your prompt reply! I've been looking at models and I think I will find one with the ability to take an average of the last 3 readings and one that can detect an irregular heart beat - and has a review of being accurate. I've already seen 4 of them that fit that description. Thank you so much. Be well and stay safe! Rob
Why could someone hate AAA batteries? you can replace them when they die, otherwise with a rechargable battery, when it dies, you lose the entire device, because after 1 or 2 years there is no way to find any battery for that device.
I am a nervous blood pressure taker. I'm on hypertensive meds too. I have learned recently that Allen Welch takes a read during the inflation cycle and this is always causing higher readings for me vs Omron that is measuring on deflation. I went out and bought the Allen Welch so that my body gets used to the measurement on the inflation. Any advice on which is the most accurate? I believe the old style/original BP measuring devices measured on the deflation.
Why do they all need to work with an app and a smart phone. Tired of everything revolving around my phone. I just want to take my BP and get the number.
Do you have any advice for a cheap and no frill blood pressure monitor for those who need it only for a short period? All I want is something cheap and acurrate.
But most of all which BPM is most accurate? How does it compare to the $1000 bpm machine at the office? That’s the info that people should be aware of. I’ve been told by a doctor to throw all these portable units in the trash because they’re not accurate.
Hey Doc, just wanted to say great video and summary. I’m an Osteo student, looking to change out my old Welch Allen Spyhg and think after this video, would go for the Withings, for convenience and ease. Thank you once again and all the best Doc.
Ketan Mistry hey thanks for reaching out! That’s a good idea plus you’ll be familiar with it and be able to teach your patients as well! Good luck with school!
It's better to have it need batteries. Otherwise it uses an internal battery that will fail over time, and you may not have access to a charger when you need it. Buy rechargeable batteries and have them handy and you eliminate the need to buy another device. You can use solar panels in the event of an emergency to charge the rechargeable batteries and nickel medal hydride batteries will recharge for years for such a device.
Hi thanks for the video. One thing about the batteries vs rechargeable: I have a different model Omron that also takes batteries, but the batteries last well over a year taking BP once or twice a week so I don't really notice it. Plus I always keep a stockpile of AAs around anyway for remotes, flashlights, etc. How often do you need to do a recharge on the Withings?
Thanks for the info, but i don’t see convenience with either. By convenience i mean going outside with barely an impact on clothing, portability, and usage. Both these devices, while accuracy is the goal, are not realistic in normal portability. I realize devices like fitbit, morepro, etc are not medical grade, they are wearable, unobtrusive, and convenient which is what the average person would put on and forget. I would like, perhaps not medical grade but how close to accurate would the more wearable heart rate/blood pressure achieve. Or are they misleadingly dangerous?
You did not put either BP Monitor on your arm. Both units have an alignment mark which you do not identify. Also, disability issues with either BP Monitor (elderly, stroke, partial paralysis, weakness) Nothing said about the actual use on the arm. I think this is a bogus review.
I agree with this, features alone should never be a reason to chose a medical grade device over accuracy. I personally own both and replace the Withings with the Omron because of accuracy issues,. The Withings started off great, but slowly got higher and higher with readings. Short of resetting the device continually for accuracy wasn't worth it. 0 issues with Omron ever regarding accurate readings. Withings had me worried that my medication wasn't working... And HBP is bad enough without that stress on top of it 😂
I agree an inaccurate BP monitor belongs directly in your trash can. Don't try to save money by keeping a faulty (Titan) BP monitor that can give false readings to your doctor
Yes, rechargeable is more convenient however, sooner or later, the internal battery will crap out and you will have to throw the unit away. With the Omron, you will just replace the batteries.
It should be noted that, while they may last up to 5 years, the Withing uses rechargeable batteries that are not replaceable by the user. That means you either send it in to have new batteries installed or buy a new unit. For that reason, I prefer user replaceable batteries.
Thank you for the review! Diagnosed stage 2 hypertension a few weeks ago. The Withings readings matched my historical bp numbers. I now take bp readings daily, and forward my ENTIRE health data (coordinated with Apple Watch) to my cardiologist. My ACE inhibitor wasn’t working well enough, and adjustments are required. The Withings let me know that. Highly recommended! If not for this review, I would have bought (and almost did) the inferior device.
i bought the withings. it really is well made and well designed. taking your blood pressure initially can be a bit scary! but what happens to me is my pressure is generally 10+ points lower at home than in the doctors. so many people are just wrongly diagnosed and drugged with serious meds that have negative side effects. taking bp is also a great way to tweak sleep, supplements, exercise etc. everyone should be taking bp 2x a day imo. heart disease is one major bullet it's advisable to dodge. i went whole food plant based, got rid of salt and refined oil, reduced stress, and increased exercise to make sure i don't fall victim to this scourge. taking my bp is a great way to keep an eye on trends to make corrections. be well!
Rechargeables have batteries that will die in a few years usually. And sometimes things are made so that it's difficult to change the rechargeable battery and people wind up chucking the whole machine. So I think that might be something to consider with comparing to a device that takes regular batteries.
Non consumer replaceable internal batteries should be outlawed. Such a waste to toss a perfectly good machine over batteries. Rechargeable AAs for the win!
You lost me when as a physician you bought and returned not cool then the next person might get something used if they have no ethics in their selling practice.
Let me guess without watching the video, he's not going to actually measure BP with them and compare to hospital grade medical device. He's going to tell us that both are good and we should choose the one fits our needs better.
High quality?.. I just bought this brand and it SUCKS! - every reading I get, I get either normal blood pressure, or extremely low!.... it changes from one reading to the other.. even waiting a few minutes in between. Last time I purchase something recommended by someone in YT..
Who cares about features when in comes to BP cuffs. They need to be accurate and most are not. Some have wifi yippie but they are 15Pts too high to reality. Which is closest to a mercury reading. You need a baseline unit to compare to. If you do not have that this is a useless video. Grow a spine and do that in a video.
I’m surprised at the prices quoted for the Omron Evolv. In UK, the cheapest is £105!! I want to get the Garmin Index BPM but it is not available in UK. The lack of automatic syncing for Evolv is also disappointing and quite ‘clunky’.
I don't care about the features, could you please tell us which is more accurate so that we could have a more informed decision? Hi, doc, I think I am having a heart attack. But don't worry, my blood pressure monitor has bluetooth.
Thorough review. I think the Withings interests me more. However, is there data on the life cycle of the battery since it's a rechargeable? What happens when the battery no longer accepts a charge? Can it be changed? Consumer or factory? Thank you
I have an omron and it consistently give me inaccurate blood pressure best automatic bp is welch allyn and it comes with app as a nurse welch allyn closet to hospital grade that you get at home....this doctor in this video never compared his results to a manuel bp cuff....this doctor probably had normal bp reading he slim but if you suffer from hypertension then verifying accuracy of your cuff with manuel is essential a good review would have demonstrated that for you using a person who has hypertension and verifying this automated machine matches manuel reading ....don't trust this review
Had the Withings first gen and the warranty and the battery cover we’re HORRIBLE. One year on any medical device is indicative that you shouldn’t take it seriously. Checking what the warrantees are now.
I bought both. The OMRON evolve first then the WithIngs BP Connect.I bought the Withings due to my physician saying that a smaller cuff could give a false read but I since noticed that the withings gave back similar results as the OMRON. So it’s me. As far as price the Omron is now 59.99 at Bestbuy and the Withings was $100 but I was able to get it for $54 at bestbuy because of points. As far As the OMRON I feel the cuff is more rigid but It is easier and quicker to get on. The battery replacement is annoying though. Also you can delete no results in the Omron Connect app if you need to. The Withings I like for the cuff is adjustable and it’s compact and it’s is rechargeable. Also I like where the Withings automatically sends the results to the app where the Omron doesn’t. Overall both are great but I feel the Withings is the best one.
Thank for the review, I was stuck trying to find a good quality blood pressure monitor for my mom. Was going to go with omron brand, glad to find it is a good brand. However, after watching the review I decided to go with the withings brand for her. I like more features, etc as you said yourself (total nerd too lol) but I think this will be a lot easier and efficient for her.
Cameron Johnson thanks for watching! I think the withings will serve you well. Your mom is lucky to have you, always amazing to see people be proactive about medicine. Best wishes !
I have the Withings BPM Connect. I had the previous model as well. I like the newer one and how compact it is. I have been a little worried about the readings being slightly high/incorrect. I'm going to take it to my docs office and compare it there. I've been using it with my mother too since she is now a cardiac patient.
Thank you for review. Which is more accurate and has close reading Dr. office's BP monitors ? Would be great if you have a video compare both same time with Dr. office monitor..
Wife uses her BP monitor daily. Her "issue" is struggling to wrap the cuff around her arm; a) she's female hence smaller arm diameter, and b) the cuff "hangs-up" when she's trying to adjust it before inflation. You didn't mention the physical "get-it-on-your-arm-properly" aspect, and that's her issue. Thanks!!
It's actually a good thing that they use replaceable batteries and not an internal rechargeable battery. Simply because all rechargeable lithium batteries deteriorate in a couple of years, at some point they just don't hold a charge and you'd have to either send it for replacement battery or buy a new one. Having them use regular replaceable batteries makes them be a device that will last for years if not decades (if everything else works fine in them). You can always use rechargeable AA/AAA NiMH batteries.
Omron us now 30% more than the Withings. Also for some unfathomable reason it seems to require a US IP address to connect to bluetooth according to Amazon reviews.
Couple of things... WHAT THE DAMN KIND OF RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES DID YOU BUY THAT COST $20!?! HOLY SHIT! I *LITERALLY* have a box of high-end, low self-discharge NiMH cells that probably cost me under $0.50 per cell!!!! Did you buy some stupid, garbage capacity Li-ion cells with the horseshit USB connector on the battery? Because those are legit trash! The capacity is stupid low, they break, they are not safe due to the limited space for the required charge controller, meaning they fail and they are a fire hazard... I genuinely hope that isn't what you bought, and doubly so, if you did make that mistake, I encourage you to dispose of those cells properly. Pretty sure it is pronounced 'Why-things' I am confident there is a medical/legal reason that only some BP Monitors are rechargeable. Seems that it is next to impossible to find them for the lower prices, surely this is some kind of medical or FCC-type certification that costs a fair bit of money to get certain medical-use certifications for rechargeable devices.
Dissappointed in this video. He never mentioned the most important thing..., ACCURACY!!! How accurate are they? I don't give a damn about the features if accuracy is not good. C'mon doc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Basically a worthless review for me. He's a doctor but it's probably safe to say he's not an electronics expert. As others mentioned why not test for accuracy!? Sorry to be harsh but my guess is that's what people care about the most. All I want is a trained medical professional, preferably a cardiologist to select a few high rated models then take them to a hospital and then compare the results. My last unit was the Omron Evolv which gave me readings that I know were way off and they were taken minutes apart different arms. I did notice the tightness of the cuff made a difference, but still couldn't trust the readings. I take my own manually now which is a bit tricky and a bit off a pain so I would still prefer a machine.
This is an old video but I really hope you can answer. You said you bought rechargeable batteries for your evolve monitor by OMRON . I want to use rechargeable batteries with my OMRON evolve but the instructions say that only alkaline batteries should be used. I don’t see how using rechargeable batteries would ruin my monitor. Are you using yours with rechargeable batteries?
Withings charge via MICRO USB :-/ IS inacurate Has the better app Has Wifi I will go for Omron that basically all hospitals in Sweden Use (but old school model with hoses) and all reviews and users say its more accurate and I need to measure GF blood pressure for health reasonals, not for functions
The Omron EVOLV has a lot of bad reviews online. Trouble with connecting using Bluetooth and you can only create one profile??? Omron EVOLV will be a miss for me.
Great video! I took your advice & I'm returning the one that I just recently bought for the item: Withings. I didn't know that the BPM could be wireless, rechargeable, & Bluetooth. Moreover, I share my BP with family & friends, that's just greatly convenient. I was just looking for an item that was Bluetooth & compatible with iOS. This exceeds my expectations. In addition, Omron bumped up their price. So, it made the decision easier. Cheers! You definitely should be an updated version of this video. The content is great.
We are using old fashion Omron at home. Had considered newer Omron that send data wirelessly but the permissions wanted by their app was too obtrusive. Withings says Photos/Media/Files read the contents of your USB storage modify or delete the contents of your USB storage I would prefer if Withings said read contents of Withings storage
yes that does sounds very intrusive. I believe it is because omron uses your mobile device's space to store data so it needs your permission. thanks for watching!
This is great for all you young people.... but older people don't want bluetooth, smartphone and all that nonsense. We just want a good old fashioned cuff.
Is there any monitors that don't squeeze the arm so hard?. I've big arms, ive a big cuff but any monitors I've ever used squeeze the shit out of my arms, this has to be raising bp by itself
I prefer dry cell batteries to rechargeable in many cases, because if you have rechargeable batteries, the life of your unit is limited to the number of charge cycles for that battery. But I come from a time when devices were expected to last more than three or four years. haha
