I am red green colorblind and the red and blue combo appears to make the blood glow for me!!!! This may be my answer to being able to track deer by myself. I would love to try this

Im red/green color blind also.I always require help. My son and I make good trackers. He does the color detection, and I do the disturbed ground when and if we lose blood. We have recovered most deer since we joined up. When I do the physical examination part, it works day or night. At night in very dark conditions, with my light turned off and he in a distance at "last" blood. Ive been able guide him where I envision the deer's movement direction from this position. Twice now, he walked on direction I yelled out to him, and stopped when I yelled. He got down on all 4's and yelled back "blood" Very strange, can't explain it, but it works.I beieve it has everything to do with being color-blind. Not just once, but multiple times.
This is a fantastic experiment. You did a great job being both scientific and practical. Thanks for doing this and sharing with us. I suggest to try the red and green again, but make the green more dim by using sunglasses or something similar. There should be a combination of dim green and intense, deep red that make the blood contrast better.
I couldn't begin to tell anyone why, but I thought the blue was the blood tracking magic light...turns out it's a dud. But you're right he did a great job setting up the test and detailing what was happening. I was in the market for a new headlamp and this saved me some trouble and possibly some money.
I'm a hunter and I saw a Bigfoot a few years ago. This is how I found you. I didn't want to give up archery so I studied everything I could find credible on bigfoot. I spent a lot of money on a custom Pistol and I've been collecting flashlights ever since. They don't like to be lit up and trailing deer is a big deal too. Big Gun big light. I've had this light for years, and it's amazing when tracking deer at night. It's called the Primos bloodhunter. I can't find a new one to buy anywhere. But it uses a red and green mixture and it makes blood look like it's glowing to a certain extent.
In 40 years of deer hunting, I still prefer old school propane lantern with aluminum foil on back side. Old school is sometimes better. It shows the blood really well. Also here in the south, spiders will find blood you can't see, and they reflect in the lantern light.
Michael Caudill been hunting for a long time and I prefer cool white and floody for blood, but anything will work if it’s bright, you just need upwards of 500 lumens and the cool white tends to make the blood pop a little whereas high cri makes everything pop. Again, just my opinion.
Thanks for this test. I was surprised to see that using two at once (red and green) was best. Good to know in rescue situations too, not just hunting animals, I think.
For those that dont hunt or dont know red and green on lights (in hunting context)are ment to be used when night hunting certain animals not necessarily for tracking blood. It's the color and the inability of the animal to properly see that light spectrum (depending on what hunting) they wont see you then run off just because you shined light over them to line up a shot. The blue is used for the blood tracking and in my experience depending on brand what ever (blue specific) that they use in it coupled with knowing what it is that you are looking for. If you have 0 experience using blue light for tracking blood then yeah it's going to be hard at first but if you have done it before(have more then just a hand full of times worth if experience) and know what shade/deep and dark color the blood shows up as(@pecifically in the blue light washing over all the other natural colors) your eyes focus on that easier and can fallow it rather well. That's why hunting specific lights put out by certain dedicated as hunting specific companies (not just x fill in blank flash light only manufacturing company) used those specific light combinations on lights. The non hunting dedicated/hunting specific companies that put out light combinations similar to these is just because those real hunting companies do so and not because they put in work or research companies with not using the proper or right blue. my light that picked up that has red/green/blue/white on it vs the one picked up made by a truly hunting dedicated company (that put in hundreds of hours and research finding the right blue), doesn't work any where near the level of my hunting *specific* flashlights blue setting. Used it before to track blood from my chicken pen across entire property to where the raccoon headed with my chicken. Both lights were used that night and the just because light was worthless to spot the trail with its blue color hue and brightness in comparison to the other. My self and tracking partner noticed the difference and talk about manufacturers that do something because they put in time in research vs those who do it to hop on trend of just because other do it and not even know why in first place.
There was a flashlight that had a RGB with 9 different colors. I used that to find out which light was best for blood tracking. Looks like it was either the green and yellow or green and orange together which sort of fluoresces the blood to an orange color. Can flash it all the way down and can see the blood trail from a far distance.
Try using amber colored glasses instead of yellow. And does go bad after a while. Not sure how this stuff works but it also works better on dried blood and possibly UV light. Curious how these would work right at dusk?

For the white light, ideally you should use a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) value light. And of high R1 to R15 colour rendering range. RED COLOURS especially depend on this including blood!
This link is the same light, just in a mini version. I'm not sure how good this one works. But the bigger green pistol grip light was a gamechanger when I first got it. I had friends calling me needing help finding deer that they lost the blood trail on. I would show up and hit the light where they said the blood stopped, and they're jaw would drop because they couldn't believe it
5000K 90CRI, like samsung351D or nichia 219C 5700K would do. All other colors and glasses are only for forensic use (close inspection) and not for open field
I'm no hunter, but my Emisar D18 with the 95 cri SST-20@3000K makes reds POP. If I was tasked with any tracking at all, that would easily be my first choice.
I've seen a similar flashlight blood test. It was a while ago, so I am sorry to say I cannot recall where I saw it. However, the tester found that an incandescent flashlight bulb with a colored filter, worked better than LED lights for finding blood. I do not recall if he said whether it was a regular, kryptonite or halogen bulb.
I've heard that a Coleman lantern works well, the kind that runs off Coleman fuel with the little filaments that burn. i'd like to see you try that as a comparison .
Great video! In the future if you need blood easy place to get it is an Asian market. Porks blood is common in dishes and you can usually buy it by the pint.
Thanks for the video ! Over the years I would see those ‘blood tracking ‘ lights for sale and often wondered. I never bought one and don’t see them for sale any more. I experimented with my colored lights and found a white flashlight worked best too. Maybe a comparison between a marketed blood tracking flashlight and a 3500 k high cri would be fun too. What headlamp would you recommend for me. I need it for duck hunting, I would like the brightest possible beam preferably one that could zoom in and out. I often use it as a headlight for my kayak so I need it really bright. Thank you, keep up the awesome work.
Wish this video existed 28 years ago when my brother hit a deer with an arrow and we found 5 blood splatters and a general direction then it started to rain. We lost the deer. My brother quit archery hunting for 20 years. Hurt him to his heart. But, he's back to archery hunting and I'll make sure he sees this video.
Hey brother, the blood from the butcher will likely be pasteurised (sterilised). This process destroys the enzyme known as "catalase" in the blood, which should be what reacts with the hydrogen peroxide (or some other superoxide) component of the spray. Trying it on fresh blood could yield very different results.
I modified some flashlights back in 2013 with some cree UV LEDs. U cant see the light with the naked eye. I had some old insignia flip cameras, modded those to my rifle along with the UV light. I just flip the camera screen out and turn the light on. I can see thru the screen, everything is bright, but I can't see it with out the camera. Very nice. I can see u.....but u cant see me!
Tom Nelson IR wavelengths are below our visible spectrum, UV wavelengths are at the very upper range and also go beyond our perception... cameras exist that can show either or even both.
1. You used Arterial blood only 2. You picked fresh leaves from another area that also reflect light via photosynthetic properties 3. Did you add the recommended amount of water to the Spay bottle? 4. Did you go to school for marketing and/or sales or were you really confused on why it didnt work?
Blood absorbs UV light at 415nm wavelength so blood looks black unter UV-light. The typical movie fluorescent white only appears if you spray a specific enzyme on blood/sperm etc.
I think the blood has too be dried in wood or carpet with that spray. Now it has me thinking a few lights that I own that advertised as blood tracker is false cause it's a bluish light.. I'm going too do some research...
Old video but I just wanted to point out that those chuckeyes at the slaughterhouse - that's a delicious cut, I have no idea why it's so cheap. People started catching on around here and it's ribeye prices. The whole point is ribeye without the ribeye pricetag. Anyway - those steaks look fabulous, all of them.
I wonder how a cooler high CRI light would work. High CRI should be beneficial and the cool white seemed to have a bit more contrast between red blood and the background.
I wish you would have combined red and white. I'm really surprised red and blue didn't work too well for you. Gerber used to make a light that combined reed and blue and people swore by it. Maybe the output ratio makes a difference?
I have heard of people using peroxide in a spray bottle to make sure they are seeing blood, Ive never tried it, But they claim peroxide bubbles on contact with blood
You kind of touched on what I think may be the solution to your hinderances. As hunters, we don't track 'fresh' or 100% 'wet' blood. The majority of the time, it has had a MINIMUM of 30min to air dry which, will give different surface properties and obviously, this will change the longer it is allowed to dry. I know hunters who will wait anywhere from an hour to several hours to overnight to track a big buck. So, now that you have done this test with 'wet' blood on top of damp ground/foliage, perhaps try additional trials at different drying time intervals on completely dry ground and/or just after a rain? In your spare time of course!!! LOL

I bought a Convoy S2+ with the 365nm UV. I use it to find fluid leaks on cars. I'd recommend it a lot. Lots of power especially if you're just checking ID's.
I have the Acebeam X80 with the Nichia 233A 365nm. It works on everything you wanted and more, i have other UV lights but none compares to this one, if it`s nothing to see it`s a "black light" completely, all you see will be darkness. But the X80 has a special crystal glass to let the UV flow out, if you wanna compare you should use no glass at all or else the normal glass will block UV light.
I wondered at first why you'd need to find blood, did you get into law enforcement? :) I'm not into hunting at all, but my pre-watch guess was that red doesn't work as everything then looks red. What is likely needed is definitely not a high CRI, but instead a low CRI of white light with a spike in the red. Cool white LEDs have a spike in the blue and that makes blue and purple flowers stand out (but filtering the red from purple to also become blue), so from that I suspect a combination of a red light at low power + white light would work well. Cool white low CRI should be better than any high CRI as it removes a lot of contrast in nature, and blue is not so common in nature, so this means low contrast in many colours in nature (e.g. browns disappearing into black), so that combination could be optimal. Post watch: Too bad you didn't try red+white. I think running the red light at a lower power than the white light would give a combination that will work well.
Like eyes shining in a light in the dark, could there be a difference in human and animal blood for this test? Maybe ask Billy Bob if you can have the contents of the trash can in the ladies room at his gas station to try out?
