The more of these X5 off road clips that I watch the more impressed I am by BMW's X Drive system and what the cars can do - I had never thought of them as having any sort of four wheel drive ability. If you want a SUV that is really nice to drive on the road and can 'off road' up to the point where you might need low range one of these mightn't be a bad choice.

We take our X5 35d off-road. Drove it all the way through the Baja to Cabo from northern Canada. Approach and departure are ok, but the breakover is the biggest drawback. The traction control does a pretty good job when two opposite tires are in the air.

Gives me confidence to drive mine in a snowstorm ahah

A savvy driver, decent offroad tires, and a clear understanding of your clearances and dimensions - and you can make a crossover do some pretty amazing things. Tires are key. And knowing when to send it, and when to creep it. I'm impressed with what you did with your X5... but its also pretty clear - you know what you are doing off road, so yeah... I'd call this 80% driver 20% vehicle.

The X5 3.0 diesel is pretty capable off-road because they produce a lot more torque will still having plenty of horsepower. Many forget to turn off their traction control system which is why many fail in their attempt , when the system is left active power will be sent to the wheels off the ground which is the complete opposite of what’s needed off-road. Turn off, you’ll get the power going to the ground where needed 👍🏻 Obviously A/T tires are a must lol

Dont do this. You can get yourself into a dangerous situation that you can't get out of without calling for recovery. Nothing against BMW as I own one, but its simple physics of the vehicle. A B D's of going off the pavement: Approach, Breakover, and Departure. The X5 fails in all 3 categories for anything other than gravel roads and special camera angles that attempt to enhance the terrain. Notice the horizon is often slanted in these videos.
