So many books I still need to get to!! Spinning Silver sounds absolutely incredible and it’s been added to my Wishlist (which is actually a really small list)! I read the Arrangement based on your recommendation this year and loved it!
I love your book recs so much... the only book I was super disappointed with that I bought because of your recommendation was actually The Turn of the key. all other recs you gave and I read were super enjoyable.
That's a great list! I read The Arrangement after your recommendation and I really liked it. My favorites this year are definitely The Last Magician series, The Poppy War series and The Wicked King.
I have all of the books in the Program series, but I still need to read them 😄 Same about An Ember in the Ashes! I think they’re great books, but they’re lacking something to make them a personal favorite. I’m trying to squeeze in Nevernight before the end of the year. I have a feeling it might be one of my new favorites. I’m loving Ruth Ware’s backlist books this year!
Just found your channel through the BookTube Real Talk Tag you did in May. Absolutely love your channel, will be looking out for new videos (positive and negative ;) )
Just finished dark matter as you suggested and holy moly... it was great!! I love thought provoking stories and this one had me lost in thought for so long after I ended it. Now I want recursion.
Some of my faves this year: The Binding by Bridget Collins. A kinda historically set (in Castleford Great Britain) romance with a magical twist that's going to make you think about what memories mean for your personality and the way you view who you are (telling more about the plot would be spoiling it). Part one is a bit confusing and you might need to push through it, but it's worth it. And The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I've recommended it before, but have since been intensely discussing it with someone else and it becomes better and better. It's one of the best crafted and thought out fantasies I've ever read (and I read mainly high fantasy and can also be quite critical about the writing in books). There are more faves, but I think you wouldn't like them because it seems like it would be the type of high fantasy you aren't into at the moment and one of them is in Dutch and called Hersenschimmen by Bernlef (the best rep of rapid onset Alzheimer's I've seen written down, although this is the only one. My grandma had it though, so I know what the disease can look like IRL). There is an English translation, but it's very hard to find.
I agree on Ember in the Ashes. I really like the series and I think it's well written, but there's just something that keeps it from being something that I'm chomping at the bit for. I read The Diviners this year and it was alright, but I haven't gone on to the next one yet.
I enjoyed the sequels to An Ember in the Ashes, they are very different to the first book but I still found the interesting enough! Yaaaaas Nevernight 💗💗💗
I have been doing this thing where I keep reading multiple books at the same time, but when I read The Diviners every other book I was reading got put on hold because I needed to finish those ones, just so freaking good. I also really loved Romanov, The Archived duology, Ninth House, Capturing the Devil, and the Caraval series.
I really enjoyed Lock Every Door too! Made my top ten as well for 2019:) I am picky when it comes to Ruth Ware...happy to see Turn of the Key made your top!
Herlifeinswatches I can’t tell you if I liked The starless sea better or just as much as The night circus as it has been years since I read that. But The starless sea was everything I hoped for, whimsical, beautiful writing with a really intricate story. I hope you enjoy it as well :)
Fantasy and Sci Fi are my all time favorites. I have a list of books in my notes and majority are YA Fantasy, I need to learn how to stray from one genre so that is why I’m here
I don’t seem to like thrillers but I don’t think I’m reading the right ones? I liked dark matter a lot though and so many of these I really want to read! Like spinning silver and recursion aaaa I need them! I can’t even remember what I read this year tbh but idk if I have any faves?
I read Spinning Silver and Lock Every Door this year and they were both excellent books! I have yet to pick up and Ember in the Ashes even though I said I was going to this year. LOL I'm not very good at reading what I say I'm going to read. I can't wait to continue on reading The Diviners series. I really need to get on it!
So you know there's a part 4 book of the diviners series coming in February!! Oh baby!!! I'm excited!!! Now about Ruth Ware's books. She's an interesting author. A ton of people including myself look forward to her books but most of the time they're a little disappointing. and yet I and others continue to read her books and a lot of times myself/people say they don't like them. I've read all her books except for this most recent one. I didn't like any of her books except for "The Death of Mrs. Westaway". "The turn of the key" sounds like "the turn of the screw". I read about 75 pages and I couldn't go any further. I felt like it was kind of a ripoff of the original classic. I'm not sure I'm ever going to read any of her books anymore. I fell in love the Arc of Scythe series. I was shocked that I like that so much. That's trilogy was amazing! Oh also one more thing. The recursion won 1st place best read for sci-fi thriller I think.
Hi there, I've seen a lot of people putting their books on the side of the papers instead of the name on their book shelves, I wonder why do you do that? Thanks
I found Turn of the Key disappointing. Its not that i didnt like the ending...and i mean the (name) twist was great. I was just disappointed by the character. Like i understand that the twist is supposed to explain why shes unlikable and such a shit nanny... but she just seemed so dumb on top of it. And yea its true, if i was in a similar situation id probably be dumb/tired too. But it was just...wholly frustrating. To the point that i couldnt really enjoy the book even with an ending that both tied it all together, made a lot of sense, and still left some of the conclusion or...well i suppose the epilogue. I wanted her to be able to actually connect and reach that child. And maybe i should feel that reaching the other one was a success? But she had...so much promise and opportunity and potential to be the perfect person to pull that girl out of the darkness she was in, and yet even in the most shallow ways she kept fudging it. And then in the end... we dont get to experience her one triumph, of actually accomplishing that turning point of character. The letter is part of it, but not wholly so. Its a well crafted book, but as a story i was really disappointed and didnt enjoy it, even though i wanted to.Oh and the technological aspect is...well i felt like because she was so resistant to it (while the surveliance part is understandable), that just made the tech part of it not feel as well explored or groundbreaking as it could have been. Especially if she actually used it the way it was meant to be used, she freaking been in the situation at all. I mean a plot hole is if the mother reviewed the all the footage everywhere they would have been able to see their kids and their hyjinks. But it does weirdly remind me a bit of The original story from the Conjuring 2 (cant remember the names right now)
