I just wanted to let you know that your voice is my daughter’s favourite soothing bedtime sound! She often asks me to watch the “RU-vid Book Lady” after I put her to bed: She likes to listen to your voice from her bedroom as she falls asleep! ❤

I subscribed to your channel around August 2022, after Mercedes recommended you. I definitely remember the last 5 years' books, as I watched quite a lot of your backlist. Due to your recommendation I read Maps, Girl, woman, other, A place for us and English animals (was also Mercedes' recommendation). You definitely opened my eyes on Leave the world behind, as I actually dnf'd it because of its pretentious tone😂. Thank you so much for a brilliant and long video❤

Jen, I look forward to Sundays now because you've inspired so much good reading in the last 3 or 4 years. Girl, Woman, Other -- Yes! (And the audiobook is fantastic). Untold Night and Day, Elena Knows, all of Max Porter. I already was a huge fan of Ali Smith. Now also enjoyed -- in addition to your own books -- Is Mother Dead, Blue Monday, and I just finished All the Little Bird Hearts. Another wonder... Thank you for being there, shining your clear light on remarkable reads for all of us.

Not sure how long I've been watching quite, and hard to say because I watched some backlog. I know I was watching you in 2020 and listened to Leave the World behind immediately after hearing you talk about it in your Best of 2020 video, and listened to it in practically one go sitting in front of the fire. Just now I went to see if it was available for a re-read on my libby app and the hold list is now over 200 people long! So I'm glad I got to be ahead of the curve on that one because of you! Also found The Hunger through your recommendation, and The Book of Strange new things was one of my first reads of 2023, that I was later very happy to hear you speak so highly of! Lastly I am currently in the middle of listening to the Frieda Klein books for the first time and am so, so taken with them. They remind me of Veronica Mars, probably my favorite television series of all time, so very happy to encounter new-to-me content that feel like a kindred spirit. Thank you for all the time and care put into all the videos, you've certainly brought good books into my life throughout challenging times. Much love

Some amazing books there. I think I'd probably have to include Hamnet that was such a favourite of mine. Grief is a thing with Feathers and Girl, Women, Other were amazing too. The Bass Rock and Passing didn't have quite the same impact on me, good books but not really to my taste. I think I would include local Australian authors instead in mine. Something like My Place by Sally Morgan and The Furies by Mandy Beaumont, I'd rate higher. But I haven't done a comparison reading with Passing and The Vanishing Half like I think you did at the time, which I think would increase the impact of those books. More great reading in your future Jen! Happy Reading!

Well! That was quite an accomplishment! I’ve read many of these directly as a result of your input. Your recommendations have brought me great joy over the years. The ones from your ultimate list that I’ve read are Grief, The Bass Rock, the Frieda Klein series, Passing, and Elena Knows. I would guess I’ve been watching your videos since 2018-ish. My ultimate list would include (no order other than Hamnet at #1): Hamnet, The Bass Rock, The Many by Wyl Menmuir, The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell, Stillicide by Cynan Jones, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, Elena Knows, Red At The Bone by Jacqueline Woodson, Tin Man by Sarah Winman, Ghost Wall, and Rebecca. I remember you recommending a lot of these over the years. I love the Bass Rock, and since reading it first I moved from London to just down the road from the actual Bass Rock, so I think about it a lot. I've been here since you started your channel, and I still get excited for each new video you post. I always appreciate your thoughtful, in-depth reviews of books. I read "The Bass Rock" because of your review and it was so outside my comfort zone, but I found it enthralling. Congratulations on 10 years!! I love how meticulous and in-depth these kinds of videos are :D I think I probably started watching you in... 2020? It feels like I have been for longer as you've been one of my favourite content creators for years, but I think I found your channel on my friend's recommendation, and I met her in 2019. So many of your favourites I remember, or have read or are on my TBR! Off the top of my head I would be hard pressed to mention any all-time favourites! I love reading but feel that I don't get obsessed with favourite books the same way I do with e.g. TV shows, so I forget about even the best ones. I've just looked at my 5-star reads on StoryGraph since I started tracking my reading in 2018, so here are some where I thought "Ah yes, that book was truly excellent", or ones I've loved re-reading recently: Kindred, Sitting Pretty, Tea Dragon trilogy and anything by K. O'Neill, Anne of Green Gables, Leave The World Behind, How to Do Nothing, This Is How You Lose the Time War, Our Wives Under The Sea, Love Letters: Vita and Virginia, the whole Murderbot series, Good Omens, The Hopkins Manuscript, Don’t Call Us Dead, Fingersmith Lol, I'm realising many of them you have mentioned 😂 Some other faves might be missing because I don't always rate books. Plus I first started reading Austen's novels about 10 years ago, so most of her work is on the list too!

I remember some time after I started watching you, you challenged yourself to write 100 poems in 24 or 48 hours and then you made a pamphlet of them to fundraise for a cause you followed. I remember suggesting you could write this poems on postcards and send them to anyone who donated a certain amount. I got the pamphlet but not one of the postcards which I regret now!

Hey Jen, I've read and loved Faber's Book of Strange New Things because of you :) Quick question, I've been reading my way around the world (long project of course) and wanted to ask if you had ever thought about doing that, slowly reading one book from every country in the world, best if by local writers and set in that country, maybe a cool video idea? finding something from small countries is really hard btw...

I might turn that into a specific project at some point. I tend to read quite widely anyway, I think I read from 38 different countries in 2023, and always looking for new perspectives. ☺ x

I have heard that Lanny is great. The Bass Rock sounds like The Hours, which won the Pulitzer many years ago. I do think memory has a lot to do with what we consider great, so I was quite impressed you put some of the 2023 books away. I am often surprised by the books that stay with me, The Push by Ashley Audrain being my only 5 star book of 2021 and no 5 stars since then. I have thought about this book a lot; about how simple it actually is. The premise is brilliant but the actual book is all made up of domestic scenes the author probably took from her own life, which is even more brilliant. Similar to The Shinning by Steven King. The other 5 star book of 2019 actually was Asymmetry. It was brilliant in a different way. I'm rereading The House of Mirth now b/c I needed something to break the winter blues and Wharton is amazing. I find a lot of literary books impress me ATM, but don't really stay with me at all. The most surprising book I think about a lot is The Last Mrs. Parish. It's not what I'd call "a smart book", but it's got the Best ending ever. I'm surprised you've not read A Little Life; it's been on so many lists and RU-vid channels.

Read Still Missing when it first came out years ago and it still haunts me. Have read read it many times. Lady’s Maid by Margaret Forster is an eye-opening fiction created around the maid who left London with Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Cannot be missed by somebody like you. Anything by Sue Gee but especially Earth and Heaven which is unforgettable. Just finished Hotel Milano by Tim Parks and it is full of wit and wisdom about the pandemic. It will be on my list. Also The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd is brilliant . these seem to go under the radar which is why I mention them as you have brought many lesser talked about books😊 to my attention. do Not Swy we Have Nothing was my first audio book. Written by Madeleine Thien it is a searing account of China from the revolution to Tianamen Square and exquisitely read by her. And Charlotte Wood is a superb Australian who deserves more attention especially for The weekend. Love your brisk yet thorough reviewing style. thanks so much from Dublin.
