Bags/backpacks. All "martial arts" bags are either too small or too expensive. I found a "hand luggage" size backpack worked best for me. I cycle to my gym and duffle bags swing and dangle too much.

These gear review videos are so helpful, especially since I'm about the same height/build as Mike. One recommendation I would make about gear reviews in general is to try and find someone who has the same height/build as you do and see what works for them. You'd be surprised how much people think gear sizes are universal.

The helmet reminds me of bicycling, and how if you don't wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, car drivers are less likely to drive recklessly near you as they realize the damage they can inflict. And of course what is a helmet going to protect if a massive pick up truck or SUV hits you at high speeds? That speed and weight is going to delete you regardless.

Not really smart to not use protective gear because of the stupid response on behalf of the training partners. Those gears are individual measures to diminish injury and trauma in the first place and unfortunately, no one can guarantee that without using anything, an idiot sparring partner would cut you a slack. Idiots usually don't have any conscience.

I've been meaning to get a new bag for years now, I've been using my old military bag that I got when I was in the Corps way back in 2002. It's seen some shit and is falling apart. I was just thinking about picking up some canvas fabric and just sewing up a bigger bag that would fit all of my shit into it. I may just op out and see how expensive this Revgear bag is and if I should get it instead. But since I ant working right now (everything is closed down). I may have to just sew up a damn bigger bag. Poor people issues, LOL.

Good video. My (long time Muay Thai hobbyist and occasional instructor) opinion: I prefer a gear bag made out of strong mesh material so the gear gets some ventilation right after training. Gloves and shin guards drying faster reduces bacteria and funk. For Muay Thai, I think the beat glove is the Fairtex BGV1. It has a short cuff which makes clinching easier and the grip opens well for catching kicks. Very well made and well proven. I have a set of Twins at the moment. Very well made, but the finger pocket is very tight (even after break-in). For shinguards, I use Twins or Fairtex. Build quality is top shelf with a proper amount of padding. I think Mike was saying that the Venom shinguards have less padding. I tend to throw round kicks at higher power in sparring and I want my partner to not suffer more than needed. If you are damaging sparring partners with thin shinguards, you will have to reduce your power which will probably change your body mechanics...which will train your body to throw the kick less efficiently than if you always throw it hard in sparring. My extra padding lets me.throw hard without damaging my partners. For MMA gloves, I use a pair of RDX. They seem well made, but I haven't used other types much. The RDX product was cheap and seems durable. Good value for money. As for the cup, I split my right teste in 2019. I'm a pressure fighter so I get groin kicked a lot. I switched to a steel cup from Thailand. I have been kicked hard many times since and felt nearly zero discomfort. The attachment strings take a week to get used to, but it's worth it. Yes, Lysol your gear. Yes, trim your nails and then file the edges round. I get ready for training like I'm getting ready for a date. Wash yourself and wear deoderant. Don't wear clothes or gi that stinks. Nearly all gyms let new students borrow gear for class. Try all of it and see which you like or which features. Ask to try on gear from other students. You can spar a round and see what works for you.

Question Mike: you don't wear headgear and I know of several fighters who don't and they have good reasons but do you think beginners should wear them as a safety feature or perhaps to help get accustomed to taking shots and staying composed? Or do you think beginners can spar without headgear from day one and be safe? Love to hear your opinion on that.
@driver3899

Don't spar as a beginner unless its super light and no bells are going to be rung (eg dont put 2 beginners together, make it touch contact only) When you are experienced enough to hard spar you should already know enough to decide if you want head gear or not Just one mans opinion anyway

For me buying gear is pretty easy, Gloves kinda all feel the same to me, never really understood why people go so deep into gloves. Head gear same thing. But there is 3 types of gear I am really really really picky on 1-Groin protectors 2-Mouth Pieces 3-Shin Guards For groin protectors, it's so personal and tough to chose, becuase fact is they heavily impact your leg mobility, especially when your going with the old school ones, so trying to find the right one for you is very personal and takes a while Mouth pieces, some people relate to me on this others dont. But I think most mouth pieces taste AWFUL and make me practically gag mid fight. Ive found a few that dont, and ive never swapped since. 3-Shin guards, shin guards drive me nutts. I hate stopping mid-fight to fix my shin guards, and i hate it when my opponent has to do the same, it breaks the whole flow. Personally, I like a nice ti ght and snug shin guard and I feel everyone else should feel the same.

There have been studies that show people tend to take more shots n will tend to go harder when using headgear, and end up getting more brain damage. It factually makes it harder to slip punches if you're using proper movement, because now there's extra width added to your head. No headgear gives incentive to go light. All of the tip Thai guys spar light with no shinguards or headgear or just gloves and shinguards, and will only wear headgear for the rare hard sparring days. I've adopted this myself. I haven't used headgear in years.

As for headgear I also hate it. The reason it's used is to lessen the chance of bleeding, breaking something or superficial injuries. As for concussions you still get them, same way that the gloves you use don't do nothing for your opponent, you use gloves to protect your hands; in fact, it's WAY easier to keep hitting with much more power if you're wearing gloves and other protections.

Dude I’ll say this about glove protection. I have shitty everlast stuff rn because pewr but I’m kind of on the road to recovery from an Ulcerative colitis flare. I’m about 102 lbs right now at 5’6. Lost about 14lbs in a month a couple months ago because of insurance lag not covering meds. I wear 14 oz gloves with 180” wraps, and I bruise my knuckles just on thai pads drilling. Had my first sparring session tuesday and fucked my hands up through the gloves and wraps. It’s somewhere in the middle of my hand between the knuckles and the thumb. Gonna try more knuckle protection on my wrap today. I think the middle of my hands are just fatigued from not enough padding. Getting some knuckle guards too probably cause of this vid. Good lookin out

I like to use all hazards prime 5.11 backpack. It is tough, straps are easy on shoulders and volume wide enough to bring my muay thaï gear. Helmet pocket for Twins competition shin guards and 25 oz bicycle canister. Main compartment carries clothes (Fairtex satin short, UA shirt & boxer, 1/4 socks, anckle support). This includes hanging mesh pockets (boxing liminent, vasaline, sport tape, groin cup, bandages, hankerchiefs, cafeine pills, mosquito repellent). 2nd compartiment holds gloves (Yokkao 14 oz Matrix) and towel. On top, I have a small pouch to get the stuff I want straight (Gladiator mouthguard, wrapping, ear buds, fitness gloves, sunglasses). Admin zipper on the front is nice to throw extra (keys, wallet, smartphone, etc..). I use molle side to hold 40 oz insulated water bottle. On the other, I got a carabiner to bring sport shoes by laces if needed. Bag size is cabin frendly - flying to Thaïland for instance, and sternum attach is great for motorbike ride.

What shin guards do you recommend for those of us who don’t have conditioned shins? Have a video on ways to condition shins?

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to fit a pair of thai pads along with your Gi and sparring gear? Or would you have to take one of them out and put the other in?
