I’m confused. Beta-carotene is from plants and retinol is from animal products. So how does your cow milk have beta-carotene??

I am from "Guernsey" and our cows are our pride and joy and we often brag about the quality of our milk, cheese and our golden butter. It amazes me how far around the world the cows are bred. We have a rivalry with Jersey but all in good fun :)

What if we crossed the Jersey with the Jurassic?! I think we will get the characteristics of both breeds together, and the hybrid will be in the middle of the characteristics of both. What do you think of that crossing?!

I have a Guernsey/Jersey mix and a full Jersey. There is such a huge difference in personality of course. I never feel like I have to watch my back as much with my Guernsey which is nice which is my upside. I got a Jersey bull that is now over a year old and we hope our girls are bred. He’s not old enough to cause problems yet but he’s actually a great bull so far. Easy to handle. I can’t wait to be in milk!

I once read a letter to the editor of Mother Earth News by an 85 year old man who named several breeds of cattle he had milked over the years. He claimed the best milk was 3/4 Jersey x 1/4 Guernsey. The butter of the Jersey and the cream of the Guernsey.

Our main milk cow is a Jersey/Guernsey cross. She has the beautiful eyes of a jersey and the distinct markings of a Guernsey. Her milk is out of this world good. We bought a full jersey as our second milk cow and I am not as impressed. I always keep an eye out for Guernseys, but they are nowhere to be found around here.

@@morethanfarmers It would be awesome if you were able to find one. We are on 5 acres and keep a bull. However, we have two Dexters, along with our two milk cows, so we breed them to a Scottish Highland. We raise them for our meat/milk supply (not to sell) so the combination works well for us. 😊

I'm about to retire my 10-year-old Jersey milk cow that I've had 5 years. She has the sweetest disposition of any cow I've ever met, but she's had some pretty significant health issues. Guernseys are next to impossible to find where I am so I'm looking at Brown Swiss which are a little bit more available. Have you heard anything about Brown Swiss?
@morethanfarmers
@morethanfarmers 2 года назад
I know they're good cows! My wife's uncle has had em for years and absolutely loves em. The downside for me would be that they're so big. No experience with em myself though. I think Jill Winger at The Prairie Homestead has Brown Swiss. You could see if she has anything to say about em on her channel.
@jamesjvis6823
@jamesjvis6823 Год назад
Every farmer I have known that has Swiss has struggled with replacement heifers, even when buying sexed seaman. One 4H family I know had bulls every time they spent the extra money, and my family members that have had a couple Swiss in their holstien herds had very few heifers born as well. They also struggled with getting the swiss calves to bucket feed, and said they were more work than either the Jersey or Holstein calves.
@sethmoore3064
@sethmoore3064 11 месяцев назад
We have Swiss And Jersey, Swiss are bigger but the bags are higher off the ground which is just something I like, Similar to Guernsey they are super super calm and I love their calm nature. Never had a Swiss charge, run, or be wild in any situation and to me easier to break in when they're heifers rather than Jerseys. They're really sweet cows, I like them over the other breeds. Or really I think preferably a Swiss crossed with another dairy breed would be ideal. We Know people who strictly purchase Jersey/Holstein crosses because thats their preference as well.

Do you mean Simmental cattle? We had our cow bred to a Simmental bull once and we raised a really nice beef steer from it. I don’t know how they would do for milk though.
@jamesjvis6823
@jamesjvis6823 Год назад
The Simmental in North America are mostly black, and bred for beef. They have been crossed with Angus and Charleigh and have lost most of their dairying ability. The closest you can get to the dairy version of them in NA are the handfull of people milking Montbilliard cattle. Those are mostly being used to cross with Holsteins.

Hi loved your video mate, you've definitely earned a new sub. I was wondering about whether buying a guernsey is a good idea in a sub tropical like here in south east Texas. I'm more worried about survivality and whether they can handle really long hot and humid summers. Even if I buy them whether I'll have to equip their space with coolers and sprinklers. Please let me know, looking forward to hear from you.
@morethanfarmers
@morethanfarmers 2 года назад
Thank you, glad to have you here! I don’t have any first-hand experience with that, but from what I found Guernseys are fairly heat tolerant. Their fawn and white colored coat helps with that. It gets hot and humid where we are in Ohio, and she does well, but it’s not hot and humid for long periods of time like in Texas. What I would recommend is trying to find one as local as possible that would come from a herd that’s already in that climate. A good dairy will breed for characteristics suited to their area. Good luck!
