Picking the right breed of dog if you have never had a dog before is a big deal and should be something that you should be researching to make sure that you get the right dog as a first time owner.

I just wanted to say thank you for the great information you provide online for free. My Chi-poo (my first dog) used to pull on the leash. This behavior resulted in him being incredibly frustrated and hyperactive after every walk. I did try to work on this issue with a positive only trainer but my dog simply didn't understand what I want from him. I then gave your tune up drill a try and he finally understood that I want him to walk my side after only around a week of training. It took me a week because I had to learn the proper timing first. I can exactly pin point the moment he finally did understand what I want from him, because all of a sudden, his whole body went from stiff to relaxed, he stopped pulling, and kept checking in with me over and over again. Now, six months of hard work later, I can proudly say that my dog isn't reactive and fearful anymore. I can walk him beautifully on a loose leash literally anywhere. Overall, he's a well more well rounded and happy dog.

Best breed for a first time owner is a shelter dog. Go find one that comes to say hi to you. If a shelter dog is stable enough to meet strangers in that high stress environment it will be good at home. Will's suggestions here are exactly the one's I'd have made for breeds.

No one is going to get a small dog and wait 14 years before upgrading to a big dog thats crazy. Just buy the dog you want size or breed and put in that hard work and dedication it takes to make sure the dog is the best doggy it can be. Make sure as a owner you know your taking on a massive responsibility a life, that will depend on you 24-7-360 days of each year, and your responsibility to that dog never stops, it's behavior & conduct, you must also be individual that the dog looks towards for leadership & mental stability. Sounds like heavy subject. After that its amazingly rewarding

The video doesn’t advise starting small - there’s a dog in each size category. It’s only the list that starts with the small category: size order, not rank order. Also, as much as the resilient and highly dedicated owner who’s had good experiences would agree with your approach, the statistics are unequivocal on this: dogs are rehomed and euthanised in their millions due to owners being ill-equipped to deal with the breed they’ve chosen. Starting with undeniably “easier” dogs is a much better option for a lot of people - the kinds of people seeking out a video like this.

I agree with both points of view here. My ideal dog is a Rottweiler but, as I’ve never owned or trained a dog before, I plan on starting off with a lab and then waiting until it’s past the teenage phase, before I get a Rottweiler, by that time the lab will be a role model dog for my Rottweiler. I’m not in a position to get a dog yet, so I’m going through videos (Will Atherton, Stonnie Dennis, Robert Cabral and Tom Davis) and learning as much as I can about what’s required of me as a prospective owner/trainer.

Hi, do you have another recommendation rather than the cavalier on the small spectrum of breeds? Could you please mentioned maybe short-hair breeds that have the same personality as the cavalier? Thank you 😊

Almost any toy breed (not terriers). Pug or frenchie if you don’t mind the health issues.

Is there a breed you would recommend in the medium/large category with less hair?

Medium - Labrador retrievers are just as sweet natured and easy to train as goldens but shorter coated. Giant - English Mastiffs are lovely. They're huge floppy jowly dogs like the newfy, also good with kids and complete cuddle-bugs like the newfy, but with a shorter coat. The only downsides are they aren't quite as easy to train and they have more of a guarding instinct so they can be a bit wary of strangers.

@@maliciousbloke The English/show type of Lab does have a great temperament for a family, but they shed copiously and constantly year round. On the other hand, the American/field lab has a thinner undercoat and can be easier on the vacuum, however they require tons of daily exercise and training and can remain puppy-like hyper for a few years. Both styles can mature around 100# (check on parents' sizes) so still a lot of dog to handle on a leash if not properly trained and exercised. I've got a 7 mo right now...love her AND she is "a lot".

Great video as always!❤ I have a question though, why do you keep adressing the “First time owner breeds“ time and time again? I see you have like other 4 videos or so speaking about this exact same topic, and I can see over these videos you have a slight variation in the breeds you choose, so which would be the definitive video on this matter. 😅 Keep up the great content!
