Best Budget Lights - SmallRig RC120D and RC120B 

I love SmallRig. I have their cage for my Blackmagic, their wireless follow focus, their wireless lavliers, and now the RC120D. And a bunch of stuff I didn't name. This light is so dope!

I've literally been waiting for this review. Just got one for a run and gun through New York as a nice Kicker that isn't a beast to carry. Thanks for a great review.

If I didn’t already have the Amaran 200X, I would definitely be picking one of these up. I’m happy with the Amaran, though. Fan noise has been no issue for me. I’ve never noticed it once.

super cool vid and better than any I have seen on these lights. I have a question and small rig product page has been super confusing on explaining on their website about the v mount battery optio, and only saw it on the euro version of RC120. I understand it needs a separate d-tap cable to light. does small rig supply one or can you recommend an inexpensive one compatible with this RC120

I am working on my loft to convert into a studio an I will probably go for a COD lights. It would be great if you could do some close ups so we can see the quality of the plastic, knobs, screen etc. Good that more companies cater for small budget content creators. Thank you for your video.

I have just seen them on a set yesterday and I was like “Smallrig made a light when??” They are great and the overall quality is superb. BTW my Dougie overheated and shut down during a shoot today (should have brought the Smallrig NP-F to dummy rig, dummy....) while luckily ZV1 B-cam kept rolling, so I did not lose picture. Still glad that I have left my Lumixes at home this time, as I needed good AF

Another great video Mark! Doesn't look like they're available here in the UK yet so I'll have to wait to pick some up to go with my own little Dougie! As someone new to the camera world, it's great to see someone reviewing things that don't cost the earth like most other RU-vidrs do. Do you have any recommendations for any on camera lights, that could go on the ZV-E10 with a small rig metal cage, looking to shoot some in car talking head footage? Thanks!

Is this usable for studio photography (assuming you have at least two) perhaps using shoot through umbrellas?

Great video Mark, gained a new subscriber! Is there much of a difference between the VL150 and the Smallrig 120d, I'm looking at both lights, but the Smallrig is around £100-£150 cheaper here in the UK. I don't have mega money to spend and I also need a stand plus a lantern, in your opinion is the VL150 really worth the extra or will I be fine with the 120d. Mostly for talking head/interview setups, I currently have the SL60W which I've used for about 3 years now, but I just need more power for darker rooms. Thanks mate

Look like some nice lights. I recently picked up some Neewer LED panels (480 advanced), and am pretty happy with them, especially for a budget option (total was 255 CAD for 2 panels with softboxes)! Mark, what is the advantage of these kind of lights vs. LED panels? Thanks! Also, didn't know you are from Toronto! I am in the Kawartha Lakes!

Hi, would you consider that I will get better recording quality with one of these lights or a godox vl150 (for example) instead of a godox sl60w? I am considering making that upgrade, although my shooting area is only 16m2 and I shoot with an a6600 or sony zv e10 and a sigma 16mm 1.4. I wouldn't want to do a pointless upgrade, but I don't mind spending on it if I get better results. Thank you very much for the content!

Great video, as always. One question though? How could I use these in a beauty/men’s grooming channel that I’m only standing a foot away from the mirror in my bathroom? I’ve been wanting to add lights to my set up with little Dougie and the kit lens. I’ve been looking at smaller lights with tripods and/or I’ve been contemplating just changing the bulbs in my vanity 3500K, 5 count. What is your recommendation for a light source in this situation. Also, been thinking about the Sigma 16 mm 1.4f could solve my problems as well. Small content creator growing quickly. Thank you much

Where’s the apple juice? Anywayyy…noice review. I actually have the Amaran 100x bi-color light. My experience with it so far is that the fan noise is not a problem. But, the fact that the SmallRig light comes with a carrying case makes me consider exchanging the Amaran for the SmallRig. This is the problem with filmmaking gear in general. Just as you’re buying one product, another brand comes out with their own version that can sometimes trigger buyer’s remorse. Damn you, SmallRig!!

what would you recommend now? i have godox tl30 and godox sl-60w and im thinking about smallrig 350 and 120 to make it full set. what do you think?

Is there a physical remote available for this light? Apps tend to become unsupported over time and then you lose that functionality forever. P. S. Still listening to your podcast, I'm at episode 40 now. Hope your bones are doing okay 5 years later! You do seem happier in the videos than on the podcast anyway :)
