Tamron has just released three new prime lenses for Sony full frame mirrorless cameras that won't break the bank. They're weather sealed, sharp, small and cheap...but is the autofocus a deal breaker???
MarkusSenior has an excellent two part review covering the AF of the Tamron 24mm compared to the Sony GMaster 24mm: Part 1 • Tamron 24mm F/2.8 vs S...
Part 2 • Focus & Audio - Tamron...

After recently upgrading to the a7rii from.the a6000, the Tamron 24mm f2.8 is the first lens I purchased. I've had it for about two weeks and love the landscape results I've been getting. On a side note, I did too noticed the clicking sound and tightness. But like you, I don't notice it as much anymore. As for video, I tried it on the a6k and clicking noise was noticeable. But, I mainly do stills.

Thanks a lot for posting this info, Oscar! It's interesting to know that I wasn't completely crazy in thinking the AF noise was improving over time. I'm with you on the stills vs video aspect as well. I think it would be great for b-roll due to the sharpness but probably a no go for real-time audio.

Definitely looking at the 35mm. Don’t own this length as a prime yet, so it would be a nice companion for travel for the 24-105.

It's a brilliant little lens in all areas except for that AF noise. I just can't get over how small and lightweight it was. If you go for it let me know what you think.

Adam Welch I don’t shoot video, so the noise isn’t really an issue, but hoping a firmware update resolves that. Maybe that’s wishful thinking, but you never know. Thank you again for the great video!

Great review! Strongly considering one of these right now but I think the af issue might be a deal breaker.. Have you tried Tamrons 17-28? I’m leaning more towards that so I can use it for video as well
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 4 года назад
Thanks, Hans! Yes I have tried the 17-28mm, here's the link to that review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K46LFeVyo4s.html Hands down the AF on the 17-28mm is better than either of these two lenses. Still, for about $550 less these primes will definitely open up the door for some people I think. I really wish I could have gotten my hands on the 20mm version of these to evaluate the distortion as well! If you decide to go for the 17-28mm F/2.8 please let me know what you think 😊

Great Video Adam. I like the combination of testing outside in the field with getting back to Lightroom. Love my 24mm copy. I tested it against the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM and I am impressed with what you get for your money with the Tamron. Would you mind if I link from my video to yours. I think it could be interesting for my viewers to check out your video?

Oh sure, please go ahead. I just watched your two part evaluation of the 24mm, ; quite informative! I'm going to link over to yours as well because it seems as if quite a few people are interested in the video capabilities of these new Tamron lenses.

Thanks one of the most helpful reviews on these lenses I have watched. I think that I will buy the 35mm one simply because its a good focal length for me, I shoot a lot of people shots in black and white and I do like the form factor small and light, you explained well the optics of the lens and showed them. I dont plan to use the lens for video anyway so no worries there for me thanks again I subscribed to the chanal and look forward to more reviews...............

Adam - great video. Curious if you think these lenses would be decent at product photography as well? Sounds like it given the color, contrast and focus distance...
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 4 года назад
Thanks a lot, Jake and yes, absolutely. The focus distance is certainly the most appealing aspect I would think. However, I probably wouldn't go any wider than the 35mm just for the sake of field of view. The 24mm and 20mm would likely show too much of the surrounding environment when shooting small items up close.

Nice review! whats better for video on gimbal 25mm or 35mm?
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 4 года назад
Hey thanks! For b-roll and self-vlogging I'd personally go with the 24mm. That being said, I think I preferred the 35mm out of the trio. As far as technical performance they should all be equally fine given they all are so similar physically.

Hi, do you suggest this on an "old" Sony A7II? It looks like a perfect lens for me (travel, trekking, climbing) due to its lightweight and optical performance.. but I've read some reviews talking about slow AF... Actually I have a 24-70 F4, can this Tamron AF be compared with my actual lens, or is it really slower? I'm wondering to buy this the new Sigma 35mm F2, or the Sony 35mm F 1.8.. I would love the Tamron for the 2:1 magnification ratio, the price (I will use it during trekking session, or Bike Travelling, so a small and cheap lens is best) and for the complete tropicalization.. I'm only a bit boubtful for the AF.. (I will use it for stills at 90%)
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 3 года назад
I was testing these on an A7R I, so a bit older than even your A7 II. The AF wasn't horribly slow but I couldn't take advantage of the in-camera lens corrections. I later tested the 20mm (review here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qpV8CFV3EYk.html) with my A7R III and literally every aspect was greatly improved. If I'm not mistaken your A7 II should be able to take advantage of the in-camera corrections as well. Also, is your 24-70 the Zess Tessar by chance? That was the first lens I ever bought for my Sony and still have it 😁
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 3 года назад
Oh and I'll also add that since you're not going to be using it for much video I wouldn't give the AF a second thought honestly.
@GiovanniMastellone
@GiovanniMastellone 3 года назад
@@AdamWelch yes, I have the 24-70 tessar.. Is a good "compromise Lens", usefuls focal range, relatively lightweight, fast AF.. but now I'm looking for some primes.. So.. do you recommend this Tamron over the Sigma or the Sony? ( My A7ii has stabilizer, and in camera corrections, and no.. I don't do videos)

Hi Adam! How is the speed of autofocus of 35 f2.8? Some people say it's too slow...
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 4 года назад
I found the AF to be...ok. Definitely not too slow, but not blazing either. If you don't mind the bit of noise then the speed won't be an issue for most situations for a lens of this focal length. I did find the AF performed MUCH better with my A7R III than it did with my A7R I.
