I just picked up a "used" 22 San Quentin 1 with only 5 miles as my first bike. I'm new to MTB but rode BMX for years so I needed something that could handle some abuse and is designed with jumping in mind. It's really an awesome bike. Especially for the price. The internal cable routing (and dropper internal routing) and geo is great. I think adding a PNW dropper and converting to tubeless is going to make this a very very capable bike.
Got a SQ1 for my wife. I'd definitely say, the first upgrade should be to ditch that SR fork. It's terrible and weighs a ton. I replaced hers with a Manitou Machete. Huge improvement and 1.5 lbs lighter. Switching to tubeless DHFs is a solid upgrade. It's a shame the stock vee tire tires aren't tubeless compatible because they look pretty cool and had decent traction, but the DHFs are much better. Every serious trail bike needs a dropper post. Can't go wrong with a PNW unit. I wish the video would have shown a little more detail about the frame grommets for the cable routing and also the specs for the crank and bottom bracket. The SQ1 is a bit of an odd duck because it's a "boost 141 QR" spacing and it can be a bit confusing figuring out the correct cranks/chainring that will give you the correct chain line.
Long story short I'm getting in the mountain biking after having almost 6 years so rough alcohol July 4th and September will be 7 years clean up all drugs I got around $600 to 700 bucks and I was looking at a couple Diamondbacks hardtails I can do upgrades myself I was also looking at the Kona dome what would be some other recommendations around that price range thank you very much your videos have been inspiring I'm getting it very very soon❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is really great. I really love this sport though i haven't got any chance to ride one of my own mtn bike coz i do not own one. I just hope i get one
I got into this sport after 30 years of riding bikes to work and fun but now I'm fully involved. Getting a san quintin 1 all the gear and shredding in 1 month. My birthday present to me is a new hobby and quality bike.
Hi, great video. My son runs SQ1 for about 6 mount now but already crash his rear MicroShift RD-M9195M, 9 Speed, With Clutch! And front tire is dead! But he rides twice a week in a school bike program but he loves it. I want to upgrade some part myself and you video is very nice. When you change the front crank you are using the Shimano FC-M5100, this model is for a 10 or 11 speeds bike. It works well with the original 9 speed MicroShift RD-M9195M ? Can you precise the size of Shimano Deore SM-BB52 you take for the bike? Thank a lot!
Does the BB need to be replaced with the cranks? Or can you use a new crankset with the stock BB? Looking to switch to spline as well but not sure if I need a new BB
Hello! I see at 4:28 that you're quite tall and so the dropper is set to the high fixed position (don't know how to explain in eng :)). That makes me wonder: 1. What is the purpose of having the short seat tube (being stick to this cool geometry) if the dropper lowest height is still high? 2. Does the seat wobble due to the long extended tube? I'm 185cm height and wonder do I rly need such kind of geometry.
Is it possible to get the San Quentin 1 and upgrade to the marzocchi bomber z2 fork on the San Quentin 3 for the extra travel down the track? Or is it incompatible. Thanks
Wish the Australian store would stock rear hub parts for the SQ1, including the rear skewer. 141x9 is a horrible size to find parts for, and I for the life of myself cannot find a skewer to fit it either.
