11:45 Olympus OM1 + Olympus 100-400 (200-800 FOV). In this price range nothing beats this combo. Stacked CMOS sensor with 7stops IBIS, 100 shots buffer, 50 fps in C-AF and 120 fps in S-AF using the electronic shutter blackout free, actual IP53 rating, 5.76M dots viewfinder resolution, magnesium alloy body, nice battery life and so on. I payed 1100$ used for mine mint condition with a shutter count of around 250.As for the lens you can get the Olympus 100-400 f5-6.3 from B&H for 1300$ and you left with 600$ for a standard zoom lens 12-40 f2.8 from MPB and a spare battery. Heck... if you looking for a barging i guess you can almost get OM1 + that superb 300mm f4 prime for 3000$ used .

Best on paper but I couldn't find single photo gallery, IG profile where it shows sharp images like rf 100 - 500. Do you know any? I would like to get OM1 with 100-400 but couldn't find one user with proper sharp images like canon with rf 100 - 500 L. I see a lot of boasting how good it is on internet but photos speak for itself.

Fell in love with the R7/100-500 combo a few years ago and have no complaints other than less than stellar auto focus in low light. Not exactly under $3000 but it’s worth the few extra dollars for the type of performance you get.

I recently bought the Canon R6 Mk2 and the RF 100-400 mm lens. While I haven't yet mastered the settings, I can tell that this is definitely an upgrade from my 70 D/55-250mm and I am very happy so far.

Not my only combination but an R7 with an RF 100 - 400 takes incredible images and weighs next to nothing. Then the R7 with the EF 100 - 400 is brilliant too. You can shoot at 5.6 wide open and add a 1.4 extender too that works brilliantly at F 8. I don’t think it’s worth adding an RF 1.4 to the RF 100 - 400 purely because the teleconverter would cost about as much as the lens!

I get good results with the r7 combined with the ef 100-400 2, and the old ef 400 prime, both also work well with a 1.4 extender. However will also opt for rf 200- 800 in the near future. I was thinking of moving to Olympus but still live in hope an r7 2 will address the well documented problems with the current model.

Knowing what I know now, Sony has an amazing APS-C line of cameras. You can get a a6400 and a Sony E-mount 200-600mm G lens for under $3k. There's also that amazing aps-c Sigma lens that's like 15-55mm f/2.8 for just over $500

Currently, you can buy an om-1 with a 300mm F4 PRO and a 1.4x TC under £3000, if you buy second hand. You CANNOT go wrong with this setup.

My bird camera/lens combo is a Canon 90D DSLR and a Sigma 100-400 lens. The 90D’s crop factor gives me reach out 640 mm. They cost me new $2400.00 CAD so I am well under the three thousand dollar mark. I am very happy with this camera/lens combo.

I own the canon R7 & the rf 100-500 mm L lens. Awesome combo super sharp images lovely colours and awesome ibis and is combination. My photography has moved to another level altogether. I previously was using the sigma 150-600 contemporary lens but this combo is out of the world.

I’ve been using the R7 and R8 with the 100-400STM a lot lately. It’s a great combo to have always with you. For more photo focused outings, I’ll use the 100-500L, but that requires a proper bag. I can fit the R8+100-400 in the outside pocket of my winter parka, no bag needed! I like the extra ‘reach’ the R7 gives me, but next to the R8, the e-shutter is a let down and EFCS is best described as ‘violent’!

My friend just bought a used Nikon D500, cropped sensor and 200-500 f5.6 in great condition for less than 2000 USD that produce great results especially if price is your main criteria.

I have two setups that work well. A Nikon D500 with a AF-P 70-300 and a Nikon D4 with a Sigma AF 150-600. I usually don't do super long shots but for urban environments they work well. Both set ups were bought used for under $2000.

Great video yet again. I bought the R7 knowing and accepting the issues it has with autofocus and rolling shutter. It was a huge step up from my DSLR and I love it. Initially paired it with the RF 100-400 then splashed out on the RF 100-500. I have kept the 100-400 as it is a great lens that is very lightweight and definitely has its place.

For a small setup I like to use the GX9 with the Panasonic 100-300. It's ridiculously small for its reach. But ofc the G9ii and the Olympus are much better but more expensive cameras. The Olympus 300mm is the pick for image quality but I'm happy with with my 10-300 and 100-400. Otherwise I think the R7 setup is the one to go for and one I'm tempted by purely for the reach when using the 1.4tc or 800mm F11.

Thanks, Jan, interesting video! Throwing in a used Fuji X-T3 or X-T4 with a used Fuji XF 100-400mm, which gives you an effective 600mm reach on these APS-C bodies. Maybe not the most advanced auto focus system, but still capable.

Thanks for the overview Jan! When I started bird photography, I borrowed my dad's Tamron 500mm SP f8 lens with a Nikon D70. I am really glad I started with that, as manual focusing with this dinosaur definitely improved my skills very quick and the very light weight allowed me to carry the gear everywhere for hours! Now I have a D500 and 200-500mm Nikon bought second hand for 1600€ altogether and I feel this is way enough for me right now. If buying second hand, you also need to consider repair costs as they tend to come quick on used gears.

Fujifilm X mount have the Tamron and Sigma lenses. Tamron 150-500mm f5-6.7 Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 And being 1.5 crop sensor the reach is great. A cheapo camera could be the XS20, and then you can get a powerful combo for less money

I own an R7 and love the layout of the buttons and dials. The AF does make shooting difficult at times, and I would really like to see the R7-MII come out over the next year improving this issue, but for no it's a great camera that I love as a small and lightweight combo in most situations. I also have an R6-MII and have been looking at the RF 200-800 however I'm not convinced it will pair well with the R6M2 as I have seen reviews saying the shots at 800mm are soft.

Maybe the 200-800 is not ideal on the high pixel density R7, but for the R6ii is must be perfect when you want reach for small birds. I'm using the 200-800 on the R5 and it gives me very sharp results at 800mm. Also some soft shots, but not more soft ones than when using the 100-500 at 700mm (with extender).

Thank you Jan for another informative review video. I love my R6, such a capable camera particularly matched with the 100mm to 500mm lens. I'm mainly doing video, so I really don't miss the extra megapixels of the R5 and on the plus side its low light performance is rally good. Somehow I can even get away with filming some wildlife at 1/25th of a second at 23.98 frames per second in very low light... I've never had a problem with overheating with R6, but then we are on the edge of the Grampians National Park, in Victoria, so I am usually filming in cooler temperatures. On the hot days all our wildlife and most of the birds seam to siesta during the heat of the day. I just heard the Gang-gangs outside so I'll have to return to this comment in a moment... I'm really happy that you once again talk positively about the RF 100mm to 400mm lens. I have pulled the trigger and ordered it. The relatively small aperture of this lens will not be so much of an issue for me as when I'm filming I more often than not, wanting to give a sense of the environment the native bird or animal is located within. Just like your footage of the signet (which shows the context of a park by a little lake), I'm often filming at F11, unless it is really low light. So why choose the RF 100mm to 400mm lens when I already have the RF 100mm to 500mm, and the RF 1.4 teleconverter? I want to pair the 100mm to 400mm with a R7 or even better a R7 mark ii when it comes out (I have to save up anyway). This combination I want so that I have a really light, small (but with good reach) set up to use during good light hours that I can carry on me all the time when I'm working in our camping ground. There are currently so many amazing wildlife moments I currently miss because I cannot have the R6 and RF 100mm to 500mm on me at that moment.

I'm using the combination of OM-1 and M.Zuiko100-400mm lens, but since the lens is not pro, I can only go high with 25fps, but I find it good enough for me most of the time.

I got the Sony a7iv wirh the 200-600, I got both used and I am very happy with it . I know , it only does 10 frames/s. To be honest I don't know what I am missing I never had more than that and I already suffer from having to go through thousands of files . The other option is the a7c ii, which has better autofocus.

Since my purchase in late 2022, I have been loving my R7, with bird eye autofocus, great IBIS, and amazing reach. That said, I prefer the RF 100-500 L lens over the RF 100-400. It makes for an an exceptional combination with remarkable image quality.

Just got the Nikon zf home yesterday, replacing my z6ii. The focusing is way faster than the z6ii. The eye-tracking works quite well but sometimes it goes to the birds reflection in the water or something else in the water. But I need to try out more.But the zf goes ut of the 3000 usd budget if you want a lens to.

Fuji seems to me to come up a little short and the price argument doesn't quite work either. If I may compare the Euro prices: Canon R6 Mii + RF 100-400 mm F5.6-8 is currently available in Germany for around 3500 Euros. Fuji X-H2s + XF 70-300 mm F4-5.6 R for around 3090.- Euros. The 300 mm corresponds to an angle of view of 450 mm. Incidentally, the "cheap" Canon lenses are never sealed against dust and moisture and the lens hood must be purchased separately. This is not the case with the Fuji lens mentioned. It would be fair to point this out in a comparison. Thank you.

Panny G9ii and 100-400 all the way! The original G9 was criminally underrated being as it was the first (or one of the first) camera to bring out animal autofocus, pre burst, high res, 4k no crop 60fps and up to 60fps shooting. Seriously don't know why more people don't use Panasonic and their cameras are built like tanks too!

Let me tell you how much I love my R7's (I own two of them 😉I owned the R5 for a year. Fantastic camera. But I always struggled for reach "even with" the 800 F11. So I rented the R7. Loved it so much, I ordered one the same day I returned the rental. Then my R5 just sat on the dresser. Finally, I sold it and bought a second R7 as my backup. Never looked back. How much do I like the 800 F11 ? Well, I just bought my second one of those too 🙂 After over 200K shots with my first one. The lock ring was showing some signs of wear + I needed a backup, for long range, multi week birding trips anyway 🙂 I feel like the R7 + 800 F11 which can be bought new for $2500, and probably used for $1700, is the best value on the market, especially if reach is your primary concern, as it is for me. I will eventually buy the 200-800 for the additional versatility and the much shorter MFD, but plan to wait a year or two, until I can find it "in stock" as a refurb, for $400 or $500 off 😉 BTW, I did rent the 200-800, and WoW ! For years I dreamed of the Big White lenses. But after my experience with these much cheaper, slower lenses, and seeing how much things have changed since mirrorless was introduced, I no longer care about $15K lenses. Sony A7IV and 200-600mm combo is my choice for bird photography. It's performing very good in most situations. I came from Nikon D500 which was a terrific wildlife camera, but it was heavy and not up to date with focus ,so the decision for a change to Sony was easy

Might suggest a few slides in the presentation with tables sharing the various alternatives to help summarize the choices and make follow and review easier. Showing body and lens and price alternatives would help us to review your suggested options. Also seems like at least two levels of price options might help like a $3000 and maybe $4500. I would recommend Nikon Z 6II and Z 28-400 as the starter kit. No, the AF is not perfect. My hard drive full of amazing wildlife photos with the Z6II does not care. $2800 plus tax for that combo, and it works for a lot more than wildlife. The reason to go Nikon is what comes next. They have the best pro half body and pro full body FF cameras for wildlife at this moment. They have the best super tele capable budget zoom lens, the 100-400 and ~200-600. Nikon also has the best TC's. Once you are ready to progress past that, the Z 400 f4.5, Z 600 f6.3 and Z 800 f6.3 are the best (and only) mid-range options. If you continue beyond that, Nikon easily has the best pro level 400 f2.8 and 600 f4 thanks to built in TC's. Nikon has quite the lead in wildlife right now. Sony does have the A1 and A9 variants. But they are seriously lacking in 1st party (and 3rd party) wildlife lenses. The E 100-400 is ok, as is the E 200-600. But their TC's are very outdated and not worth buying in 2024, IMHO. They don't have any mid range zooms or primes. At the pro level they do have a 400 f2.8 and a 600 f4, which are in need of updating. No 800mm prime. Sony is in last place when it comes to wildlife. It does not matter how good the bodies may be if there are little to no lenses to support them. Canon does have many camera body options for wildlife. They also have budget options for lens. However, that is where the good news ends. With Canon, your line of succession goes like this. You get the RF 100-500 and love it. You then realize the reach is not quite enough and it sucks with TC's, so you also get the RF 200-800. From there you either have to take a massive step back and get the 600/800 f11's or a giant leap forward to the pro lenses. It's basically the same situation as Sony, but at least Canon has a pro level 800.

Hi jan,I use r7 with 100-400 ii,for small birds and for shore birds put on 1.4 extender at f8 560mm,am very happy with this combo,but like many of us we need pro crop r7 mk 2 with stacked sensor plus cfexpress card,am not holding breath.

We start to speak about the lenses but when it comes to nikon we mostly ignore it. THe Z50 is a great camera. And you should be able to shoot with those cameras. They are all good. However some are better. If you know how to use the camera any mirrorless is good!

Hi Jan - I use the Canon R50 with the RF 100-400 and RF 1.4 Extender giving 224 - 896 equivalent focal length. At only 580 dollars this camera has the same digic X powered focusing system as the more expensive Canons. This combo works really well with a CBG grip (Custom Battery Grips) and a JJC lens hood.I find it gives really good results in reasonable lighting conditions. Total cost under 1800 dollars weight under 1.3kg. I also use Canon Raw to extend the buffer to around 15 shots at 12 frames per second which I find adequate for most subjects.I don't think there is a better value for money combo with AI autofocus and that amount of reach in a package that is light enough to take anywhere and still get the shot - also has uncropped 4k video.

Thanks for your recommendations. I am using R7 and EF 100 - 400 MK2. Was thinking of acquiring the RF 100 - 400, but unsure because of the f8 maximum aperture at the long end. Lots of cloudy overcast days here in the UK. I am also using the 90d with the same lens and quite often find that a more satisfying experience.

Hi Jan! In preparing for our upcoming humdinger Aussie-trip (Sep 6-Nov 12) I've been waffling about what camera to buy to get more pixels than the 24 of the R6ll. I just didn't fancy the R7, but my partner went for it. He now have the R6 and the R7, he's somewhat pleased with the R7. I still was leery of it, due to the loud shutter noise when one have to use mechanical, and the sometimes somewhat iffy AF... I was ready to fork out oodles of money for the R5 Mark ll, if it was met with good reviews from you and some others, but Canon just won't release it to us dirty masses anytime soon. Certainly not in time for me to buy it, and use it a while BEFORE our departure! Nope. What, then? Well, there's the R5, now down to ca 37,8k SEK (appr AUD 5.000, we have a 25% tax here in Sweden, so everything is eye-wateringly expensive) after costing almost 50k two years ago. Even better (I hope, it had 7800 exp), I found a demo ex and got it for 33k (AUD 4400). That was 1 month ago. So, now I have the R5, but couldn't afford even *one* CFexpress card yet! It'll have to wait a while, I kinda have to pay for the camera first... Meanwhile I'm almost using it as if it was a R7, go figure. Only jpg, mostly in crop mode in both photo and video, while I'm figuring it out. Your old videos about the settings (especially the video-mode one) came in handy.

Great video! Have one question, which lens will be better for handheld video rf 100-400 or 200-800? I have r5 and also 500 mm f4 ii and the extenders. Struggle a lot with handheld video. Thinking of having something that’s handholdable and don’t want to compromise too much on the reach as well.

Thank you for your video! All wildlife photographers should really thank Canon with the release of the affordable long lenses such as the 600 & 800 f11 or the 200-800. Twenty years back such long glass was way out of reach for the average punter unless you bought cheap mirror lenses, which had dreadful image quality. Now we only need an MPE65 (or a MPE100!) for mirrorless cameras...my wet dream!

I am using an EF100-400mm version 2 on my R5 and it has definitely served me well. I love that lens and I would love to continue using it, but the EF one AF motor has kinda gotten to me for these small and erratic birds haha. I have gotten probably one of the sharpest photos ever, but this will be a definite step up to the RF100-500 I will end up getting soon. I will definitely recommend an EF100-400 ii just because it is a reasonably priced (on second hand markets) L lens, which will deliver photos that won't disappoint.

I recently purchased the 100-400L ii used and it gives me so many options. On the R7 I can use it with the Canon 0.71x speed booster, or the regular adapter and then throw in the 1.4x iii or 2x iii converters. I’m only a casual shooter and thought this would give me the best value since I primarily shoot other things. The lens is awesome really. I’m tempted to sell the RF600/11 now since I don’t take it out and it’s quite restrictive imo (but results are great)

I am happy with my Canon R10 + RF-S 18-150mm + RF 100-400mm + RF 800mm (< $3000) an ideal budget combination for all focal lengths. Recently I was on a 28km hike with R10 + RF 800mm, I was tired carrying gear only in the last few kms and I am 55, super-lightweight combination with huge focal length. Is is a bit slow for fast birds in flight, but then I mount RF 100-400mm...

My picks : For Canon : R7 + 200-800 For Nikon Used Z6ii + 180-600, or Used D500 + 200-500 or even 500pf For Sony : Used α9 + 200-600 I personally use a Z6ii with a Sigma 150-600 contemporary, and I'm planning to upgrade the camera body and probably also the lens in the next months.

I'm just a hobbiest... I have a Canon rp and an rf 24-105 (cheap one), a Sigma ef 60-600 monstrosity and a nifty 50 thrown in for good measure. The 60-600 lives on the camera most of the time and does most of what I need. So far, I'm pretty happy!

You forgot Z f at Nikon Jan. Lot of people will overlook this camera, but it certainly focuses very well with birds. I would almost call it like small Z8 within retro body. Recently I gave it a try in Scotland and it seems like sweet combo with 600 6,3🤙Great!

I currently shoot Sony with a 200-600 G, and a 100-400 GM. If have owned an A7RIII and an A7RIV, and they are perfectly capable for stationary birds, but do not have Bird Eye AF, and only shoot 10 frames per second, so are challenging for BIF. You can find either of these, used, within your budget. If I were buying new today, it would be an a6700, or a used A9 with the 200-600 G.

The A7IV has bird eye focus, but you are spot on with the frame rate. Between the used A9 and A6700 I think the latter has the better AF. But the latter has poorer frame rate. Hmmm, compromises. I have the A7IV and went with the Tamron 150-500 because it was a 1000 AUD cheaper than the Sony 200-600.

You don't need high frame rates or bird eye AF for BIF photos. You need smooth accurate panning skills and that's about it. The better you get the slower the shutter speed you can use. You also need to know where to stand / position yourself and that usually means having the wind behind you blowing towards the bird as they take off into the breeze not with it. If you can't shoot when the sun is low in the sky then use at least a full stop of exposure compensation to lighten the heavy shadows. Also, don't get invested shooting at long focal lengths or birds' long distances away from you - the best BIF pics are usually when you are 30 yards or less from most birds and maybe 50 yards for very large ones like Pelicans or the bigger raptors.

@@tdunster2011 true, you don’t “need” bird eye AF, or Bird AF. That said, I find the A7RIV and A7RiII significantly less capable of picking up a flying bird against a noisy background (trees, etc), or in low light, than the A9, A7RIV, or A1, regardless of how well you can pan. That does not mean it is impossible, but I guarantee your hit rate will be reduced, and you’re likely to need a wider aperture unless you want only the wing tip to be in focus. Sure, if you are good enough to catch and follow the Birds Eye with a small spot focus while flying, or are able to lock on the eye before takeoff, you might do as well but I suspect that is not the majority of photographers. The A7IV might be another good option, but I have not used it.

in the m4/3 there are the very beautiful and very affordable 75-300 mm f6.7 which is great for videos with Olympus bodies, gives crazy stable results. and there is the 100-300 mm f5.6 which is a bit better than Olympus's for stills. both are less than 700 USD, and can give awesome results when the light is right. there are many options form older Olympus bodies like em 1 mark II and em1 mark III which many say its focus is better than OM1 ( i disagree) and there is em 5 mark III all these models have pro capture and great capabilities. lumix G9 is another great camera with incredible price considering its specs. wonder why you did not mention the Lumix s5 and s5 II.

Since the release of OM-System 150-600mm there is plenty of used 100-400mm on the market for no more $1000. BTW Olympus 100-400mm performs not much worse on G9II than it does on OM-1, so that combo could be quite appealing. Of course Leica 100-400mm would have much better IBIS and probably a bit better AF on G9II than Olympus 100-400mm but at the same time the latter is optically much superior. It is the shame that Sigma does not produce 150-600mm DG DN Sport with m43 mount with Panasonic's Power O.I.S and instead it license it to the OM-Systems that made it $1200 more expensive and forcing you to use it with OM-1.

I recently updated from cheap old DSLR to R7. It was like jump into future.😊 I still use adapted tamron EF 100-400, which works pretty well. Still need to try how the autofocus would be with canon rf lens and sometimes i get an error about contact with a lens that is annoying. But i will use this for a bit and then plan to go for rf 100 - 500 or 200 - 800 out what good options there will be in that time. I use dxo pure raw to compensate for smaller sensor and darker lens. I love apsc reach and and weight combo and would not go to full frame. For me it's waste of money.

Hi @@natashaodonnell817 , as i said above I did not compare it yet with native rf lenses. The experience is definitely better than one I had with my 600D. Autofocus is a bit jumpy but that's something that's known for r7 and I cant tell if it would be better with other lenses. Also, as I mentioned before there is the error about lens contact. I am using canon ef to rf adapter so that should not be happening but it does, and often when there is a lot of action:) Despite that I am just hobbist and can get pictures that make me happy with the combo its definitely usable.

The Panasonic S52 Lumix S5 II is currently now $1800 and one can pair that with the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports Lens. The Pana is one the few FF camera one can get these days with RAW Pre Capture which was just recently added in the latest firmware updates. I keep hearing folks talk about the incredible choices and or spoiled for choices. Well I totally disagree. Very few cameras within a reasonable Budget have proper RAW pre Capture much less a decent EVF/LCD. Plus the buffer depth in most cameras leave a lot to be desired. Then there is the issue of Rolling Shutter in most of these lower priced cameras. Plus, For most folks these days, $3000 is nothing to sneeze at.

G'day Jan, I think something that gets forgotton is the need for a good computer to process RAW files, this extra exspense can be avoided by shooting JPEG so ypu can process on a tablet or your phone. For this reason I picked up a DLSR EOS 5D Mk IV AND 100 TO 400 ZOOM lens for $1600 so I can use now to hone my skills and knowledge and start with RAW later when I can afford a computer.👍

Hi Michael I use a standard iPad with a subscription to Lightroom for iPad to process my raw files. I used to use a computer but find the iPad more than meets my needs - A Lightroom subscription for iPad alone is only around 50 dollars per annum and works really well.😊😊

Sony Alpha 6600 is still a good choice. Good results with Sigma 100-400 or Tamron 150-500 or best results with Sony 200-600. Even when buying new you are in budget

I have people ask me for camera recommendations, I usually recommended the R7 and 100-400mm from what I have seen from your videos and Duades. It's difficult to convince people to spend that extra $1000 to $2000 to get a Nikon or Sony kit, which is understandable because my budget was originally $3000aud but I took a huge risk and spent $6000 as a beginner not knowing if it was going to be a long term hobby...

You missed Canon r100 (APSC $500 with 18-45) - a little bit older sensor but for birds on perch very good). If you are really tight and buying the 200-800, this would be good enough for a couple of years. You also missed that most new photographers will want to dabble in landscape and other. I am both a landscape and wildlife person. So I would also be attracted by Canon 190gram 16mm/2.8 $300 and 390gram 24-105 on R8 $400. Canon has good enough light inexpensive landscape choices. There is marginal difference between Sony and Nikon and Canon systems. They are all great. This is likely to continue into the future. So any one of these is upgrade proof. I would not go m4/3 because ultimately you will want FF - only go this route if you are weak on handstrength. I agree with you that the lens choice is the most important and the best inexpensive bird lens is the Canon 200-800, at the moment. Birds need reach, good IQ and versatility in zoom - the canon is best at the moment. There is no other reasonable choice in the 800 range. You can use a 1.4x but that adds $500 and with the 200-800 you don't need it. I bought the R8 (24mpx, 4k downsampled, 40fps, excellent a/f) to complement my R5 in backpacking. It has impressed me. I think R8 and 200-400 would last you 5 years at least before you gained skills. And if you are pinched for budget R100 (apsc, 24mpx) with kit lens for $500 -- and 200-400.

I use the r7 with the rf 100 500., brilliant. however if i put the 1.4 Extender on; 2 things, you cannot close the lens down, really annoying and limiting, and the field of view is so small forget fast birds in flight.

camera bodies are like cars, once used they lose a ton of value and lenses hold their value quite well though it is a 25-year-old lens the EF 600mm prime is still $3,000 USD and another lens I am looking at is the Sigma 300-800mm or the 800mm prime f/5.6 lenses they are still $2,000 but nearly 20 pounds so I will need to add another $100-300 for a tripod. I currently have a Canon EOS Rebel T7 with a Sigma 150-600mm c and yes it has focus stutters but for $700 I am not too upset with that.

The last half year prizes for used Canon EF primes and other expensive glass have dropped like crazy over here in Europe. It used to be a good investment, but nowadays you will have to take a significant loss. At the same time, RF prime successors are mostly 30% more expensive. So in the end you need to add more funding to upgrade. However, starters can get some really nice used lenses for the lowest prizes in years.

Depending on your budget, have a look at the Canon SX70 and SX740 cameras. Amazing zooms on both of them. I am sure other brands have something similar. Secondhand buys for the earlier versions of these cameras are an option if you want a cheaper solution. I started with the SX40 and the zoom was amazing.

there were many superzoom-bridgecameras in the 2000s and early 2010s. Their image quality and autofocus don't hold up to today's standards and you need quiet a bit of light to use them well. But if you live in a sunny place: Take a look at the Canon S5 is for example. It is pretty light and costs next to nothing used. A somewhat more capable camera may be something like the Nikon COOLPIX L340. Just don't try to take cityscapes with those cameras - their distortion is hellish. Also, some of these cameras took AA batteries... useful because the original proprietary batteries are likely dead now.

I am not a wildlife photographer, but do have occasional opportunities. There's an osprey nest near me, and they're currently mating and nest building. I have the R7 - just received it a few weeks ago, and tried it on an Osprey yesterday with the SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2. Total failure. I shot only wide open, and didn't get a single usable frame. Everything not only looked soft, but unpleasant. I've been using this lens for a couple of years on my EOS-R, and have had no issues with it - I even shot an airshow with that combo last summer, and got hundreds of perfect shots. So, I tested it this morning, along with my Canon RF 100-400 f/5.6-8 on the R7. Maybe it's just the hyper-dense sensor on the R7, but the 100-400 was happiest at f/11, and the 150-600 barely adequate at f/8 and noticeably sharper at f/11. I'm really shocked, given how well these lenses have worked with my full frame camera, just how much I had to stop down. I am NOT happy. I can make this work, but ISO levels will be extreme. As of right now, I just can't justify a long, fast, autofocus lens for the few wildlife opportunities I get. So, I guess I'll have to make the best of it. Or, find something older, maybe.

And that is it! At least for my preferences, I miss more focal length, better focus and stabilization, silence shot and, still, more low light capacity (full frame sensor) or better high ISO capacity... Why? I've been used a D500 with the Sigma 150-600 C for the last five years. The 21mp even in a APS-C câmera isn't enough for me. Also even with high ISO in this camera (ISO 5000) I still need low shutter speed and so the poor lens stabilization and no stabilization at all in camera (and I use a Manfrotto tripod) the needed of a better stabilization system comes out for shots about 1/50 or less. I mainly shoot in the amazon rain forest, small song birds, hummingbirds, antshrikes, antbirds and more... all of them deep in the forest or high in the canopy at 30m or more. 😅 So, I finally decided, over more than two years thinking about, migrate from Nikon to Canon. Not solving all that questions, but improving a little bit, I hope! I've already watch your videos about the R7 and the RF 200-800 thousands times! Thanks a lot!

I just really want Sigma to enter the RF market with a 150-600 wildlife lens 😢 There is literally nothing between the 100-400 and 100-500 L on the native RF mount. Getting a used EF 100-400 L II seems indeed like the best budget option, but using an adapted lens feels like going backwards instead of forward. Then again (I have an R7) it's possibly the best weather sealed budget combo with great DOF currently available for Canon.

currently not really invested in Tele lenses because the results kept looking sad compared to what can be achieved with more expensive gear (and my computer is enhance many pictures via AI. Enhancing a single 40mp-file takes up to 20 minutes 😮‍💨). Notebooks that have neither apple silicon nor a good graphics card are not really suitable for AI tasks. I think, L-Mount should have gotten a shout-out. They have some pretty sweat gear: S5ii has good autofocus and is surprisingly cheap used. Sigma 100-400 is a robust and cheap zoom, Sigma 150-600 is available and the Sigma 500 5.6 seems to be an awesome prime. Those lenses are available for Sony as well - but the A7iii's AF is probably not as good as the S5ii's (though it's burst speed is faster). But there is also the pretty cheap Lumix 70-300 - maybe not good enough for birding... but might work well for bigger animals. It is a bit slow but Panasonic's dual stabilisation is just 🤌. Also, Panasonic is expected to release new bodies in 2024.
