I'm doing bird photography with a 55-250mm lens at the moment. I can't afford a 1000$ CAD 400mm lens for bird photography. I have a rebel T7. And so far, all the second hand I've found for a better lens are still really close to the completely if not at the brand new lenses. I did manage with my 250mm lens in shooting a solitary plover bird (very shy of people) and a double crested cormorant on a rainy day (again, another bird really shy of us). And I covered my camera with plastic bag that I had cut the end of it. I'd like to shoot chimney swifts, but they fly and never land as they can't really do it or only on steep rocky wall.

It was really fun to see all the viewer submitted shots, thanks for that. I agree that used is the way to go to stay within a budget. That's how I was able to ultimately afford a couple of very nice prime lenses that were just too much new. Finally, I'll say that this video is of great value to a large number of photographers out there. The new mirrorless cameras and great new lenses are featured in a great number of videos, but the majority of us can't afford a $8,000 plus kit. Thanks for making a video for the masses :)

As much as I love doing photography, I love seeing other people’s work! Phenomenal pics. You’re absolutely right about skill vs expensive equipment. These photos are a heck of a great argument for anyone rambling about the latest, greatest, gear. I’m a huge tech fan, but I still run a 7d mk1 and 5d mk3 with excellent results.

Has to be one of my favorite vids you ever made. This work is invaluable to the community! I'm sure this will get more people into wildlife. It's so easy to be turned off by the hobby looking at forums with people touting their expensive gear and gatekeeping the hobby, saying it's not worth pursuing unless you spend the big bucks. It's true that bad gear can throw you off the hobby quickly. If you can't get any decent pictures with bad gear it can discourage you very quickly. But there are budget gems out there and I think your compilation of them was pretty exhaustive. Thanks a million. So great to see all the amazing pictures by everyone, this was a real treat! Cheers!

Agree, i updated to a Sony a7IV this year, until then i shot with Sony a6000 and 7D. Important part of gear/kit is software, and its often overlooked. Tried out just for fun Topaz Denoiser, i was amazed what you can do with it. My old 7D´s problem was high ISO, but with the correct software you can easily compensate for it. Basicly my good old 7D started a 2nd life as the perfect macro setup (7D+60mm+Topaz). Again, todays software for enhancing / denoising images become _really_ powerfull. It helps _alot_ so don´t ignore it folks!

Re the Nikon D7000 ... I ran a D7100 for ~10 years, taking over 72,000 shots and still going strong. I finally replaced it with a Z7ii for increased resolution, focus tracking, and 10fps to all help with primarily wildlife photography. The dual slots also help, streaming RAWs to both, and protecting me when I had card issues, so no irreplaceable photos lost. Still a great camera!

Great video Duade. I use fairly inexpensive gear for now and really believe it's the Light, Composition, and Background on getting a good shot. To be honest, nothing really beats practice. I have really enjoyed bird photography this last year and the better pictures I have taken are really due to practice and taking the time to go and get some "Bird Shots". I did like like your comments on Kits that are heavier versus something much lighter like the new mirrorless cameras and how that has an effect when you are hiking or just sitting. Again thanks for putting together such a great comparison video. Really Great.

It is great to see that people took such nice fotos with a Nikon Z50. I bought the Zfc a few month ago, since then my interest in wildlife photography grew more and more. Right now I am still kind of afraid of this style of photography, in dim surroundings my old lenses really don´t perform well. But this makes me feel a liitle bit better, I think I will try to buy a good used lense in the near future. Thank you for this great video, your community made some amazing shots!

I started with a 7d also, I'd recommend that camera to anyone on a budget or starting out. I'm now shooting on a Canon 1dx which I absolutely love and picked up on eBay for about $750 AU. I can only afford 3 lenses for it ATM, the Canon 24-105 f4 L, 50mm 1.8 STM and the Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 L, I'm not sure what to save up for next, maybe a prime zoom? Any suggestions are welcome, thanks for the videos loving the content and community!

I love seeing wildlife photography, but I never get the chance to shoot myself and cannot justify the lens cost right now (especially when I will not earn money from that type of photography). I appreciate videos like this :) it shows what can be done on a budget, it is just a shame that in the UK if I have a day off when I am able to go out it is almost certain to be cloudy, dark and probably raining. But in my field (mostly portraiture) you can spend a fortune on cameras and lenses, but when you present the final images, no one asks or cares what lens and camera was used if the images are good. I was shooting portraits and during the shoot, I took a few photos with a Fujifilm X-T10 (worth about £100 used) and a 7artisan 55mm F/1.4 manual focus lens (which was about £100 new) and a few of the images with that combo were good enough I presented them to the client, and they were just as happy with those shots from a £200 setup as with the shots from my £2000+ camera and lens setup.

Super helpful compilation. I can only agree on the tool debate. The best photos of my life I shot with a D90 of my little kids (at the time). It is just 12 megapixel but they are so nice to look at theses days after all those years. In the mean time I own a D750 and I just bought a D7200. It is amazing how good they are in low light when shooting RAW and developing it with modern noise reduction tools (such as DXO lab and others). I will buy two more lenses. The Sigma 200 600 and the Nikon 80 400

I spoke about the 1DX family with a Sports Illustrated photographer and he said he never had shutter concerns with the 1DX series. He said that he regularly took well over a million photos with them and that the shutter virtually never failed on them. He said it was far more likely that something else ended up malfunctioning after a long period of use and a few million shots with one. As a sports photographer myself, I can take thousands of shots a game and do that 2x-3x week at times I have about 650,000 shots on my current 1DX with no issues to date. It works as well as the day I took it out of the box.

I have to also recommended looking around auction houses for camera gear. There are a few here in Toronto and I scored a couple Sigma lenses this way; a new but considered "distressed packaging" an 18-300mm 3.5-6.3 C for $320(can) that usually goes for $800(can), and a 17-50mm f2.8 HSM used for $300(can). I did also see a couple Canon R6 body only, typically goes for $3200(can) and I think it went for $2200, I'm right now eyeing a Nikon Z6ii + kit lens that is at latest bid $1000 vs $3500(can) new. Another thing I did was finance. Amazon offered up the Sigma 150-600mm C at $90/month for 12 months which amounted to exactly how much it was selling for in Canada anyways...at just over $1000(can). The unfortunate thing with being in Canada is the low stock level of used gear because we have such a small market. Lenses will resell for on par, or sometimes more then new if its a lens that is hard to find in stock.
@Duade
@Duade Год назад
Thanks for sharing, that is a great point and another good source for gear, congrats on your recent buys. Cheers, Duade

We have similar problems being a small and isolated market here in Australia! eBay and Marketplace have worked quite well for me so far. Along with an FB M43 user group. I put up a fair 'buy' offer based on good eBay auction results minus commission. One user reached out to me, had both lenses that I needed for my super cheap Olympus M1 and even offered a small extra reduction for an almost unnoticeable mark on the front element (invisible on pictures, even at high aperture and uniform background). Now I'm testing the new gear along with my 7D2 with Tamron 18-400mm lens and deciding which system to keep. But I'm inclined to choose the Olympus, as the Tamron was holding me back in terms of sharpness for smaller birds and Oly seems to have good enough focus for big birds in flight, such as Eagles, falcons, egrets or kestrels that I come across on my coastal hikes.

Fantastic video and a big for the information. In the UK, I use 5ds, 7dii and 1dx with a combination of multiple lenses, but mainly the 150-600 Sigma C (with a similar camo cover to yours) and 70-200mm L for action and distant wildlife. I use Tamron 100mm Macro (with tube extension) that I imported from Japan for close up work. I feel the 1dx is my go to, as love the base colours of the image and better utilisation of light on overcast days. The 7dii and 5ds have stunning resolution in good light, but of course get unusable after iso6400, or even lower with 150-600 lens fitted. I used to shoot birds on the old 5d classic with the 400mm f5.6 back in the day. As you know, only 3fps, but made me really work for the end result and many of the shots on it were just as good as many today. For me, the 5d will always sit in my heart as the first affordable significant DSLR.

Hey, the FL on the backlit Cormorants is wrong taking into account the crop on the R7 the 400mm is a 640mm adding the 1.4tc to that makes it around 890mm....so definitely not the 560mm you mention on the settings card.

They make me want to forget about the sigma 150-600 I am longing for and get out there and practice with my old nikon D40 and 55-200 f4-5.6. Well here I am a few months later, eating my words.. I ended up buying a d7200 and Nikon's 80-400G (both used) and the comparison is not even close in terms of sharpness, AF, reach, ease of use, and everything; my new combo is just so much more capable. With the d40 & 55-200 I maybe made one or two wildlife images I am truly proud of in the last several years, while my best shots with the new lens still make me smile even after revisiting them months later. There was the immediate improvement from having better gear, but I have also found I am learning a lot more about composition, approach, lighting, etc. because the new gear inspires me to simply go out more and make the best of my investment. I still completely agree that you can get good images with a very limited budget, but having better gear allows one to capitalize a wider variety of situations. Getting a proper, but still relatively affordable body and lens seems to be the right compromise for me right now. New, better gear is always tempting, but I don't think I'll be able to justify an upgrade for a while yet.

You provided a lot of insight to a question I recently pondered .... Given spending $xxx, which makes more sense, buying the latest mid-range grade camera or lens, or buying a bit older high grade camera or lens? I concluded that recent high grade had some real advantages. Then the problem became where to get a good list of recent high grade cameras or lenses worth investing in. I wondered if Google would lead me to such a list ... or video. Thanks for the video.

Hi Duade. I had the D300 for 13 years before it broke down. I mostly into landscape in low light but I use that camera on an old AF300mmF2.8 IF-ED screw drive AF with 1.4 or 2.0xTC for Bird photo on courses. After it broke down 2 years ago I got a 2nd hand D700 because I could reuse my D300 vertical grips, memories and batteries. I have upgraded to a 2nd hand D800E for landscape to use until I can afford a 2nd hand D850. I don’t like to put money in cameras because I prefer to get better lenses. I’m saving for a 70-200mmF2.8 VR and after that I need to get a budget 200-500mm or a 200-600mm Zoom. My problem is that it must work on a Z8 61 Mpix camera if I get one in the future. I think the aperture you can use is about 1:9 on a 61 Mpix if you like sharp pictures so Nikon and a 1.4xTC will work better than a Sigma+1.4xTC. The downside is that I loose 100mm if I get the Nikon lens and 600mm is better for birds. I don't think the D800E is a good wildlife and bird camera so I will use my D700 for that until I have the D850.

Do you know any lenses that are 100$ and have good stability. I’m new to photography and I’m not sure if stability in a camera makes a huge difference. I saw a Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G for 109$ on MBP and it said it doesn’t have image stabilisation. I bought my Nikon d80 a couple days ago and want to shoot wildlife. I know the d80 is very old and isn’t the best but watching this video convinced me i can still shoot well. Do you think the lense is a good purchase?

I have the R7 and I'm wondering if I should get the RF100-400 or the Sigma 150-600. You mention that the Sigma has auto focus issues, but it has the longer reach... The high MP sensor of the R7 obviously allows for some cropping, so maybe the Canon could be fine, but I'm really not sure. But anyway, thanks for the info here. Really useful

Excellent video as always Duade, you did well to maintain your composure considering all the bloody flies around you! It was great to see you include Nikon kit as I know you're a Canon shooter, and also to see the viewer submitted images, what a great idea! I'll keep lugging my D610 and Tamron 150-600mm G2 around for a few years yet while I can mange, I look at it as additional weight training to go with my cardio, haha! When the time comes I'd love to move to lighter mirrorless gear, but as this video demonstrated so well you can get cracker images with all sorts of kit, it's getting out there that matters. My favourite photography quote ages back was someone asked how they take such good shots and the reply was "f8 and be there" Not the best aperture for birds, haha, but you are an excellent example of the philosophy. Just get out there! Well done mate.

What a cool video Duade. I loved seeing so many beautiful pictures of colleagues around the world. Your channel is what I like the most on RU-vid, as you are the only one that, in times of more and more super releases in the world of mirrorless, strives to show that nature photography is for everyone, the most important thing is the passion for what we do. I currently use a Canon 7D mk II and Sigma 150-600 C mm and it's an amazing kit. Sometimes I think about investing in an R7, but on the other hand I think about saving the money and traveling to see more species, because my current kit fulfills what I need and I think that's the most important thing, to be satisfied with the photos you equipment allows you to do.

What an awesome video. I have to say that I started with buying all this lower priced gear but became enthralled with wildlife photography to a point that I extended myself and bought the best gear I could afford! It all turns out that I've spent a lot of money over a short period of time and after thinking about this I should have just jumped right to the expensive gear and saved myself a lot of money that went to waste on lower priced gear that I no longer use. I did get lots of nice images with the less expensive gear but I have to say that with the R7 and RF 100 - 500 that the images are so much better. Thank you as always for such engrossing video Duade, take care and be safe out there....

I've been using a Nikon D3400 a 24MP DX with a Nikkor 70-300 VR but recently picked up a Nikkor 200-500 VR to fit that camera, it improved my ability to get the smaller birds (the Tuffed Titmouse size) at reasonable ranges and shutter speeds. Both lenses have their uses but the 200-500 is a bit sharper with more reach.

Amazing video! Information in this video would have been handy 2 years ago when I was looking for my first camera, ended up getting the P1000 bridge camera, definitely not the best value and 2nd hand doesn't save you much money on it since the camera is still in production unlike the cheap deals you can get on discontinued DSLRs. On the last topic about preferences I think target species alone can greatly impact the overall feel to someones gallery, I guess it depends on location, but here in Australia we can have a wide range of options to choose from all within a 1 - 2hr drive away from desert birds, to raptors, shore birds or forest birds each resulting in vastly different images. I have a mate that focuses heavily on endangered or rare birds just as another example. But the species is the species and the photographer still can choose how to compose the image, currently i'm into the portrait style of photography with the bird large in the frame with little to no habitat inclusion but I started to realise that you don't get a sense at all of where the bird is living, so i've started to actually consider the scene around the bird more and finally started using the zoom range on my 200-600mm.
@Duade

Thanks Kurtis and totally agree, I think as we evolve as photographers we find a style that suits us and its nice to challenge ourselves from time to time. Good luck with that incredible lens, Cheers, Duade

Hot tips for people looking for heavy budget gear on the canon system: - AVOID EF 75-300 IS USM, at absolute least you should get a 70-300 even without IS, its newer and a lot better in sharpness than the super old 75-300, or just the EF-S 55-250 IS you cant make much wrong. The 75-300 on APS-C literally stopped me from photographing for years... too bad, too useless. Thankfully people still pay a lot for this bad lens 2nd hand since its stabilized (got nearly 300€ for this "trash") -beginner APS-C bodies are awesome! EOS 600D and newer have flippy screen and are pretty awesome already for very little money. 550D very cheap but no flippy screen. Also you have to beware of older/heavily used bodies with high shutter count and probably AF back or frontfocus issues! I would even say its good if you upgrade to a 2nd hand EOS RP/R10/R7 instead of going for a DSLR at all. Especially if you are looking already at something like 2nd hand 6D Mk2 or so. That was the point i realized: a 2nd hand 6D Mk2 costed between 750 and 1000€, a BRAND NEW (!!!!) EOS RP with basically the same sensor and more modern and mirrorless as i bought it 980€! In the Sub 2000$ category i would say: - R7 (new probably?!) and a 2nd hand Sigma 150-600 is a MONSTER of a combo... 240-960mm, very sharp... just useless for handheld video (thats where native and good stabilized lenses perform much better) and the AF issues. - the RF 100-400 sounds really interesting, but its clearly less sharp than the RF 100-500L. But its weight is really amazing, it could be interesting i just avoided it because of F8 - probably R10 instead of R7... but i run at 30fps often into buffer issues at the R7, the R10 is even worse. 15 fps mech are just fine on R7 at least (with UHS II card around 7-10 seconds nonstop, full speed 15 fps burst)
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx Год назад
The biggest issue i have with most combinations.... they are just 400mm primes for example or "only" 100-400mm, so 640 on APS-C but still: Thats a good, universal focal lenght for wildlife, but the more i got into wildlife the more i was interested in having not just a fixed or limited one - And zooms are mostly limited in the absolute tele range and/or aperture. So i bet anyone more interested into wildlife will end up for sure with 2 lenses at least after a while. As much i liked and still like the RF 800 F11, sometimes i just need a shorter MFD and focal lengh/zoom.
@Duade

Thanks, was that the version II 70-300? I think that is the best version of the lens judging by the nice shots submitted with it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Cheers, Duade
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx Год назад
@@Duade I had the 75-300 II IS USM, the version from 1995, discontinued in 2005. Any newer version is by far superior to the 75-300. I never looked again for 70-300s (except for a cheap/fair priced DO model im still looking as small universal telezoom) The 70-300 DO IS USM is also a nice option i guess. I would really love it in combination with my 28-135mm IS USM for general photography/landscape, both lenses are small and light weight, and for landscape more than i need. Also my 75-300 II IS USM was a good lens as long you didnt use it for wildlife. Autofocus was unusable, in fact it hardly focussed on anything and all usable wildlife shots (about 2 or 3, it was a pain to use!^^) i made were in manual focus with this lens and slowed down to F8 or even F11 for more sharpness and DOF out of this extremely unsharp lens and to compensate for manual misfocus a bit.

A 70-200 L lens will be very sharp, although it is limiting in reach, and you would have to get fairly close. I got some good shots of a Kookaburra recently on a 70-200 f2.8 L II. I was able to get within a couple of metres of it, and get some shots before it was chased away by a noisy miner bird.
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx Год назад
@@I-Am-You-1024 Yes, 100% the 70-200 2.8 II is damn good and its really affordable 2nd hand for its performance (and NO AIR PUMP unlike the RF variants) I got also some months ago my hands on a fair priced EF 70-200 2.8L II, i wish i would have found a Mk III for a decent price since the Mk II is noticable worse in the corners, but i dont mind it since im fine with good enough center sharpness if the price is much better (900€ for Mk 2 vs 1600-2000€ for the Mk 3!) I abuse the 70-200 mainly for macro, sometimes its one of my 3 "trinity" lenses for landscape despite they are not fitting to each other at all (16-35 2.8, 70-200 2.8 II and Sigma 150-600C, all EF glass on Meike Filter adapter/protection)

Regards Bob.
@Duade
@Duade Год назад
Bob, it is a tough one, the 7D2 has 20mp and is APSC so will make the bird bigger in the frame, it also has a slightly improved autofocus system and is smaller and lighter. The 1D is a pro level camera so is built extremely well, massive battery but is a 16mp 1.3 crop so not as much reach. It might have slightly better noise performance. I think for me the 7D makes more sense. Cheers, Duade
