You're right about the battery size. It will be so hard to find especially when SHTF happens.

I stay by AA for flood headlight, and 18650 for pocket trower. Headlight is Armytek Tiara A1 or Fenix HL50, Trower is Armytek predator WW with XB-H led (380m throw) or Olight Javelot NW 2x 18650 with NW XP-L Hi led (1000m throw)

I use the stream light protac 1L it can use AA cr123 and I’ve ran AAA very useful light it does have different modes but you can program what you want to use

My recommendation is fenix E20 V.2 It works on AA and it have insanely long run time thats my secondary btw

Idk what kind mine is, but around the actual light it has a glass breaker, seat belt cutter, magnet, and a flat side. Down one side of the handle it has 2 solar panels surrounded by white and red leds that either shine or strobe. The end has a charge port and usb port. It is nice, I got it from a family member. Have no clue the brand or anything though.

Stockpile cr123s ,although I have a n armytek that takes two aa and it's for survival type grid down scenarios I also have many aaa backups . But I'd recommend the zebralight aa or aaa lights

Buy a PowerPlus Salamander. This is a solar recharged torch which also doubles as a power bank for small devices such as your phone or GPS. You never need to worry about batteries! Available on Amazon but I bought both of mine on ebay.

Wow! I love my Surefire Tactician, but you make a solid point about battery types. Of course I stocked up on the CR123s, but in a SHTF situation we might all be scavenging.

With their being so many compact solar chargers out there now, using flashlights with CR123, 18650, or 21700, especially with flashlights that you can charge via USB, is the way to go nowadays in our opinion.

@Jason Croft Any of the USB rechargeable Nitecores are good, in our opinion. I like the new Nitecore P20iX. On ultra low it will last 350 hours on one battery. The MH12S or the new P12 are also good.

If my research is correct. IKEA AA and AAA batteries are the same as Panasonic Eneloops. They are just repackaged.

Good point about the lumens needed !! For a long term ? You have to think globally. You need also to power your smartphone because it has your music, your books, your family and comforting photo. So you better go with a small USB solar panel and rechargeable batteries in your flashlight. Most can be recharged at least 300 times. Scavenging from places to get batteries could be very dangerous. Also the alkaline batteries got a short 2 years life so even if you find some in a house you may find it’s dead..Go rechargeable! As for the flashlight itself you could ask for a model always starting in low power so you do not light the sky trying to read your map.. If it’s a front light some start by red led...even better.

Definitely agree on this. Back when this video was first made it was all about AA and AAA, but now that small solar chargers are everywhere, using rechargeable 18650, 21700 and CR123 batteries is much easier, especially when the newer lights charge via usb cable and on super low can last an insane amount of time before needing to recharge.

The eneloop batteries you spoke of.. can they be recharged with other chargers or are they charger specific? I looked at the Sanyo charger and it can only be used as a wall plug. I am looking to be able to use my portable solar panels should a grid down situation occur. My goal zero battery packs use a USB connection from the solar panel. The GZ batteries suck ass...

This video is a few years old. We'd recommend flashlights like the Nitecore brand that uses 18650 or 21700 rechargeable batteries. They make a few models that you can charge via USB and plug right into the flashlight itself. I have a few of the solar chargers that I use to charge my flashlight, GPS unit, Satellite phone, and cell phone. The Nitecore P20iX is pretty awesome, and is USB rechargeable using a 5000 MAH battery. In our opinion, technology and solar chargers have advanced enough where you don't need AA and AAA battery flashlights anymore.

I prefer rechargeable. I have a 27K mA power bank that will charge everything in my BOB. The power bank is solar rechargeable. The only gear I have that needs replaceable batteries are my weapons lights.
