@@originalcynic My suggestion would be: forget the default key bindings that you've used in all fps games. Spend some time experimenting with different bindings to find best suited ones for you. Try to have all the keys close to your hand and easy to reach and use (for example I use C instead of 6 on the plasma rifle, X instead of 7 on chaingun etc). Also we don't have crouch and prone in the game, which gives us 2 extra inputs that we're used to. We just have to practice.

L3 is for dash, R3 is for jump, the circle is for melee and everything else is the default config. For a game like Doom where you constantly need to be on the move, thumbs should always be on the analog sticks.

personally, i use R3 for grenades, L3 obviously for dash, L1 for jump, X for melee and circle for change grenades. everything else is default. Also, you can jump as you use equipment, flamebeltch and quickswap and dash without any problems

L3 to dash (it feels more comfortable that way so you can move and dash in the direction you want to while still aiming) I use circle to swap the equipment launcher but L3 is the main change that made playing easier

No no no.. You are limited with this. Try R1 for dash. R2 for trigger. D pad right for fire. X for chainsaw. O for throwing bomb. Square for weapon wheel. L1 for jump. L2 for weapon mod. R3 for malee attack. And the rest doesn't matter this is the best mobility controls for doom eternal. Try it and you won't be disappointed. This is another RU-vid video for you. I can't imagine playing doom on keyboard though. Controller is the best for me. Jump and dash are main priorities so they should have easy access. L1 jump. R1 dash. Nothing is better than this. I learnt these settings from one of the engineers of the doom project. Trust me they made the game but I got this info by pure luck. Long story. Just try it out first for few days . Cheers

I am kind of used to playing on the default settings (Xbox one). If i want to press 2 buttons at once (for example B and Y, so dash then flame belch) i just slide my finger through them.

Hugo suggested in the dev stream setting your grenade change button to L3 and it really helped me with my speed and with quality of life. The new weapon wheel delay set to 100 or 120 helps, any lower and I just end up choosing the wrong weapon. Also quickswapping by holding fire and then switching weapons upped my gameplay proficiency by 2x.

I use a controller with 2 buttons on the back and I've been able to beat the game on ultra nightmare with these bindings. I home this helps. RT: fire LT: aim LB: rocket launcher RB: assault rifle ( important!!! because it's the only weapon where when you switch to it you need to have your finger on LT and since you use your shoot finger to switch it won't slow you down because that slight ads time is enough to get your finger back on RT so you will to aim and shoot insanely fast. It makes combos faster.) Left thumb stick : move and dash Right thumb stick: look and jump A: glorykill B: chainsaw Y: flame belch X: combat shotgun (but after I get the ballista I get arbilist and replace x with weapon wheel and I change the size to 4 weapons. Combat shotgun plasma gun bfg and chaingun.use chaingun for shield micro missiles are better in every way.) D pad up: weapon mod swap (until I get the ballista and I change it to launch equipmentment.) D pad right launch equipment (until I get the ballista then I change it to switch equipment.) The other d pad buttons I make the ballista and the super shotgun then bind them to the 2 buttons on the back of the controller. For me I got left ballista right ssg but it's your choice. Every time I made a space it's a different set of buttons on the controller you can change them how you like. Maybe ssg on LB or glory kill on y. If it makes it easier. But having jump and dash while being able to move and look is amazing and it allows you to have 4 weapons at your disposal without taking your finger off the joysticks. But the most important is assault rifle RB it allows a natural aim then shoot very very quick.

I use Paddles. Just default and using the paddles to jump and dash. I got them about halfway through my Ultraviolence run and it's made everything SO much smoother. I highly reccomend them.

I got the game recently on ps4 when the deluxe edition popped up on that sweet 25€ price point . I am currently considering changing the assignments just slightly , first things first my sensitivities are on 40 with 0 look smoothing because I want to be able to hit weak spots with the heavy cannon. Next the dash on circle (which is brain dead honestly ) goes to L3 I guess then the melee glory kills goes from R3 to circle . Now I can’t really decide what is to be done with R3 ,grenade switch or flame belch .

Let me update my answer first I highly recommend using L1 jump L3 dash and you need to use your middle fingers on R2 L2 so that you can quick switch with your index finger on R1 and sensitivities I personally prefer 70 70 0 .I did everything on nightmare but I didn't have that much spare time for ultra nightmare runs .I avoid going into the pc vs console comparison for that particular game (I have experienced just the latter anyway ) and safely say that once you figure out the aiming and quickswitching and stuff you can play on a high level and it's a ton of fun to do so.

I can't imagine myself playing doom eternal with keyboard and mouse. Played with controller, had no problem beating the game on ultra-violence, tag part 1 and 2 (actually part 2 is kinda pain in the ass but idk if that's because I'm using a controller). Played master levels and began nightmare, and still doing great. The important thing is it works and have fun. My control scheme mostly the same with the default with one change: left stick to change equipment.

My button layout+tips: L3 dash/ circle for switching to ice bombs and every other thing is default)+ tips: customize your weapon wheel it helps a lot. My wheel layout: heavy cannon on top/rocket launcher on bottom/ super shotgun on the right/ ballista on the left/ chain gun on the top left (next to the heavy cannon on the left)/ (bfg/unmykr) bottom left/ combat shotgun on the top right and the plasma rifle on bottom right)

Personally, I use a slightly modified version of the standard layout (the only change is swapping grenade switch to L3). It really helps in a panic situation to quickly swap to ice bomb to get things out of my face.

The one major change I made that you could still potentially make is flame belch to L3. As you know the more you can keep your thumbs on the sticks the better. Every second you have to click on triangle is a second you could’ve been turning and aiming. L3 is perfect for that (though sometimes I get excited in my movement and it goes off by accident but not too much to defeat the purpose) Otherwise I have crucible on triangle, and grenade swap on down d pad , I like to say it feels like I’m shifting gears when I throw a combo of frags and ice at the same time. Ps: the one thing about the weapon wheel is while it can never be pc level it does get absurdly fast with practice. I used to watch SmvR videos and miss moments where he brought it up. Recently I was rewatching one of my battle mode fights and I realized I can do the same thing now. Went from ssg to shotgun to ballista and I didn’t even see the wheel come up (until I backed it up and specifically looked for it, but it was such a little frame or two like a flicker of a candle that I didn’t see it in real time when I was focused on the action, and it no longer feels like I have to pause-throwing me out of the game-because I’ve got the lay out so down pat that weapons just seem to come out when I want them to)

I play Xbox and have a kind of basic but also weird button layout. A is jump, B is flame belch, X is equipment, Y is weapon wheel and swap. I use the right stick to swap equipment and left stick for dash. Left trigger for weapon mod, right trigger for weapon fire. For bumpers I use left bumper for chainsaw and right bumper for glory kill. Up on the d-pad is mod swap, left on the d-pad is not used, right on the d-pad is crucible, and down is mission info. I highly recommend this setup for single player, I wouldn’t know about battle mode though.

Damn I played this whole thing multiple times with the default settings and I'm stuck on the first level on nightmare maybe being able to jump and aim simultaneously the default layout has me constantly let go of the joysticks

@@justaguythatlovestomakeyou4902 D pad is the direction pad or direction arrows. Example arrow up arrow down arrow left and arrow right. It's not the joystick. Example super Nintendo has no joystick. It only has D pad. Nintendo 64 has joystick . It also has D pad. PS4 has two joystick and one D pad. Hope you understand

I use L3-dash R3-punch L1-jump L2-weapon mod R2-shoot R1-weapon wheel X-grenade Sqaure-chainsaw Triangle-flame, Left Dpad-crucible Up dpad-Switch weapon mod and Right dpad- switch grenade mode. If you haven't tried this I urge you to, I NEVER have to remove my thumbs from the the left and right joysticks, the jump button and the weapon switch shooting and weapon mod. Just think about that, you can now dash aim jump shoot weapon mod and actually everything without sacrificing movement at all. Im able to destroy UN on ps4 and even kill a marauder on one green flash stun by using shotgun grenade ballista blood punch shotgun, try doing that on the standard lol Dont forget under the control settings theres a setting for weapon wheel time, low as possible is best

I advise people to put the flame to L3 because you dont have to move your thumb also put triangle to switch equipment because i think the arrow keys are really hard to press in the middle of a fight so you can switch grenades one after the other while shooting it really helps try it out guys

Finished it on Ultra Nightmare on both PS5 Verison with Dualsense and the PS4 pro using a standard Dualshock 4. I changed button layout to Dash R3 and jump to L3, flame belch to L1, Grenade to Triangle. Glory kill to X. Crucible to Circle. left rest the same as default. Easy fix you can dash and jump at not remove fingers from analog sticks. Might take some time to Adjust, but worth it in long run. Also i'm old school so I use inverted Y axis.

New to Doom Eternal, and I've been having a bear of a time with the quick swap. I'm having the same issue you mentioned, where the shoulder buttons are just not as responsive (as they seem to be for every other Doom player). I've even returned controllers over it. I'm shaking my head, because I want to love this game. The combat for me is just SO disrupted, when 50% of the time, switching to a weapon does not work.

you really need to work on binding dash to R3. there should be no reason to take your thumb off the controls except to reload, belch, fire a nade or blood punch. obviously ideal would be to not have to take it off for any of that, but you dash (or should be) way more often than using any of those options. makes sense to get that integral with your movement. try it. sounds like it wouldn't work well but it does. I've had no problems with it whatsoever and my combat across the board is vastly Superior like that over using circle.

I actually have a similar button layout like Cynic, but the only difference is that L1 is my jump button, and L2 is my weapon mod activation. And R1 is my weapon firing button. I played a lot of Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare as a kid and that was how the default button layout was. L2 to zoom in with a scope cause I liked to snipe people, and R1 was to fire my weapon.

Ps: since you like using your middle fingers (I personally don’t) on top of my flame belch L3 advice, why don’t you consider putting dash on R2? Lord knows you’re having to constantly take your right thumb off for dash. If you did both the things I suggests, you’d only take it off grenades and chainsaw which is way waaaayy less often

Wapon wheel is my only problem. I mapped the waponswap on Y and flame belch on right bumper(Xbox). Is better, but still not so good as pc.

left middle finger, L2: jump left pointer finger, L1: use mod left stick: run L3: dash (left pointer finger on PS, right thumb if d pad is below stick,) D-pad: switch mod, crucible, mission info right ring finger, R2: fire weapon right middle finger, R1: weapon wheel/swap right stick: aim R3: melee right pointer finger, top face button: flame belch right pointer finger, left face button: equipment launcher right pointer finger, right face button: switch equipment between frag, ice bombs right pointer finger, bottom face button: chainsaw im at nekravol on nightmare w the switch and a pro controller. not sure how this would work with joycons, but i am using gyro. I’ll try turning off aim assist.

Very late to the party but i use lb (l1 on ps) to dash und left stick to jump So the only time i need to raise my aim thumb is for flamethrower und chainsaw. My movement got so much better because of that layout Edit: nades are on b (circle) and a doesnt have a function

For me and other controller slayers, L1 for jump, L3 for dash. Remaining equipment, being grenade(X) and grenade switch(O) moved to face buttons so all your equipment is on face buttons. This allows you to move, move camera and fire your weapon, dash and jump without taking your thumbs off the sticks. It achieves the same goal as using paddles or a back button attachment without having to pay for those things. It completely changes your game.

I bound jump to R1, dash to L3, equipment launcher to X, and weapon wheel to L1. With a little practice I think itll be a great setup. I play alotta parkour based games, and my jump is always r1, and sprint is always bound to L3 so making it the dash was an easy pick for me. Equipment Launcher bound to X is a little goofy, but I'm getting used to it. This setup keeps my thumbs on the sticks and allows me alot more mobility than before. But quick swapping is an issue as it always kills my momentum having to bring up the weapon wheel... hopefully ID will implement a hot key system for controllers, like hold the weapon wheel button and press triangle, or square or circle.

mobility is the key in this game, you move first, then you shoot. so it became natural jump and dash for me to change these two keys. I use an Xbox controller, RS is now my dash, LS is my jump, X for melee/glroykill, A for weapon switch, LB for equipment, RB for flame belch. Y for chainsaw and B for equipment switch. my second rule of thumb is how frequently I do something. the more often I do it, the closer it goes to my sticks. so A for weapon switch, and I blood punch quite and glorykill often so X is what it is. but I'm thinking about changing the button for weapon switch to either RB or LB in hope for a better and smoother ' move and shoot at the same time' gameplay.

You realize how old this video is right? This was before people knew you can do all the crazy combos on pc and they wanted to know how to optimize movement/weapon combos. Not a question of being “bad”, it was a question of “what’s best?”

I've actually only recently started to use a completely custom control scheme, so I'm still trying to work stuff out and get used to it, but here's what I have set up at the time of writing this comment (P.S. this is on Xbox): RT: Fire Weapon LT: Weapon Mod RB: Equipment Launcher LB: Flame Belch L Stick: Jump R Stick: Dash Y: Chainsaw X: Switch Equipment A: Melee/Glory Kill B: Crucible D-Pad Up: Heavy Cannon D-Pad Right: Super Shotgun D-Pad Down: Plasma Rifle D-Pad Left: Ballista What I'm mostly going for with my ideal control scheme is to ensure that I can keep my aim moving to keep track of my target while I'm mobile, dashing around in mid air where I used to constantly lose track of the more agile enemies and have to always switch between avoiding attacks and having to regain line of sight on my target. I know this current layout may seem ridiculous, but I just feel that being able to optimally swap equipment and weapons is ultimately useless if you end up having to constantly lose track & regain sight of the demon whose throat you're trying to shove your flame belch into.

I personally don’t like the claw thing it’s really uncomfortable for me I just switch with my pointy finger idk what is the name of the finger the finger next to the middle finger anyways my button layout is: L3 dash/ circle switching to ice bombs/ and let ever other thing to default and customize your weapon wheel it helps a lot I use: heavy cannon on top and rocket launcher on the bottom and then super shotgun on the right and ballista on the left chain gun on the top left and bfg on the bottom left and combat shotgun on the top right and then plasma rifle on the bottom right

I just can't understand why don't 2 wheel weapon buttons, clockwise and anticlockwise (hold down to pull up the wheel). That way you could lay it out to have the most common combos sequential (i.e. precision bolt to rocket to ballista to SSG etc.). Its so much of handicap playing console I got frustrated on Nightmare and stopped trying. I know it can be done but why bother when the developers have handicapped you much just because of your choice of platform?

My controls are: LT for jump, RT for shoot, LB weapon mod switch, RB switch weapon, A to punch, B to chainsaw, X to fire grenades, Y for flames, LS to dash, RS to aim weapon mod, dpad left to switch grenades, dpad right for sword or hammer, dpad up for super shotgun and finally dpad down for chaingun. My look smooth is zero and sensitivity around 60.

Only change i did was pushing down on left stick to change grenades. I hated taking my hand off the stick to swap those.

But having circle as dash means you cannot perform a fast 180 while aiming. The Maurader and that charging animal both require this move for efficient kills. I guess it's a trade off - but I like L2 as my dash.

I just have a base controller and I use default settings and surprisingly, default settings aren't bad. The only thing I've done is crank up the sensitivity. I mean, I'd love paddles but I'm not willing to spend 200 dollars on an elite controller.

Why do you use O for dash? That means you have to take your right thumb off the stick every time you want to dash, which I would think hinders your movement and aim a bit. I do like the idea of putting weapon switch/weapon wheel assigned to down on d-pad, but even then, I'm hesitant because the left thumb needs to come off the stick to quick switch. I'm of the mindset that for actions such as weapon switch, jump, dash, and shoot then thumbs need to remain on sticks for better movement and accuracy. Maybe I'm wrong, though. I'm curious what your thoughts are about this. Btw, I know exactly what you mean with the weapon wheel and quick switch being assigned to the trigger or bumper means that it tends to not be as responsive. I've noticed that in my own gameplay with wheapon wheel currently assigned to LB (I play Xbox). I would be great except it's not as responsive as it was when it was assigned to Y, but I moved it for the reason mentioned earlier. There's just not enough buttons on the controller for everything I need to easily do in the game with thumbs remaining on sticks. For this game, controllers really are a handicap...

@@bobukcs3353 trust me. Use my settings for a week straight. That settings is the most mobile settings. You can't master doom with default settings. My settings is not claw settings. Claw settings is be the hardest to master. It's all about dedicating four fingers to the L and R buttons. Example. Right Index finger should only be dedicated to R1 and right middle finger should only be dedicated to R2. The same goes for the L1 and L2 . Index for L1 and middle finger for L2. This is the foundation for all games especially doom. Master this if not anything else. R1 dash L1 jump is very important if you want to jump dash and aim all at the same time.... Weapon mod L2 . Shoot R2. This is a foundation. O bomb. Square weapon wheel. Think of the weapon wheel as a gear box. D pad right is good for flame belch. X good for chainsaw. R3 good for malee. Triangle good for bomb mod example to switch from ice bomb to ordinary bomb. Crusifix D pad up. Note if flame belch is R3 you will end up using the flame Belch by mistake. This is just clean advice. I want to see you tearing demons like a boss. By the way sensitivity should be on 100 percent. That is a must. Bear that in mind if you want to be a bad ass. With practice you will look like a PC player. Your fingers will get stronger. That is the key. Then every other game will be very easy to play..... At least give me credit. I didn't copy and paste for you. I gave you a fresh comment. All for you. CAuse you special. I respect my gamers oh. I don't take them play. Which ever way you choose I wish you the best bro. Peace
