Awesome post! Yeah your top 5 are right on!Totally agree that the presentation is so important.No one should say “ Pick a card!” It’s just not imaginative enough.Those are words that totally put people off card tricks and magic in general.Joshua Jay does a card trick on RU-vid with his special deck and the trick is amazing but more importantly his patter and story line is utterly absorbing,now that’s how a card trick is done!John Bannon has great self working card trick videos ( I think his books are tough to get hold of).Great presentation,really enjoyed it.Nice one Jeff 👏👏👏👏

I used to go to Hank Lee's Magic Shop almost every week before it closed permanently. I would by the "latest and greatest" tricks. The guys behind the counter would always show me a card trick using nothing more than an ordinary deck. After I picked my jaw up from the floor, I would ask them where they learned it from. They would usually point to a Marlo or Dai Vernon book. I started to buy more magic books instead of the latest and greatest trick decks. I love the magic books. So much value in books.

Really enjoyed this video. Excellent points and tips about each effect. But it could almost be called 5 Best Card Plots. When I think of effects, I think of my favorite version of that plot. (For example, Triumph could be considered a “Pick a Card”, but it is my favorite version of pick a card).

Whenever a layman asks me what my “favorite,” or even my “most difficult” trick is, I perform Dai Vernon’s Triumph. When I’m done, they usually agree with me, saying something along the lines of, “yeah, that must take a lot of work.” I smile, knowing that this classic of magic is still as good as the days when it hit the magic scene. My second favorite is Card Warp. When a spectator gets asked to fold and crease one of the cards, they always react just like you mentioned about T&R, in a “you REALLY want me to bend it?” It’s a simple routine, very visual, and leaves them with the pieces to examine to their heart’s content. Great topic, Jeff.

Great list Jeff- great to see Red Hot mamá it chicago opener, it was one of my first learned card effect followed by Triumph. These two are in my top list. As a magician you can personalized it and make it related to the audience without the standard request “pick a card”. Torn and restore is eye catching and unique and shocking for the audience to see a card ripped. I have out of he world as #5 in my list because is long. Prophecy is my number 3. Thank you for a great video.

In Eberhard Reiss's book 'Foundations: The Art of Stage Magic', he writes about asking magicians the ten greatest stage routines. He also asked the public their favorites (magic is much more popular in Europe than the States). The two lists weren't even close. The image you first showed at the beginning of your video illustrated that disconnect perfectly. While I agree with much of what you said, it's my opinion that it really doesn't matter. You should pick a routine that fits you and you really enjoy performing it. Make it part of you and involve the spectator. (Darwin Ortiz's book, 'Strong Magic' will do wonders in improving you as a performer. As for my pick, the Chicago Opener has been a staple of my strolling routine for decades. In addition, Card Warp has been a favorite since 1972. I have a few others by Cervon, Le Paul, Harris, and, of course, Lorayne. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Much appreciated, as always.

I love Triumph and OOTW (I perform a shuffled deck version where about half the cards end up sorted and the other half are left to prove it was shuffled). I can't get excited about Cards Across because I love Coins Across, and you can't beat that visual/audible effect you get with coins. Things not on your top 5 that I love: a good Oil & Water, and a Mystery Card plot (Sankey's "Paperclipped", Guastsferro's "Mr E Goes for a Stroll" or one of the many other iterations where a previously isolated/enclosed card becomes their signed selection) and a nice Card to Impossible Location (e.g. wallet, card box). And - nearly forgot - I have a thing for "Your card turns invisible" plots (see Rafael Benatar, J K Hartman and Mike Powers for ideas)!

Loved this topic and presentation! Only version of OOTW I have ever done (and I have performed it many many times) is Harry Loraine’s Impromptu OOTW. It is FASIDU and ends with the participant completely handling the choices. Honorable mention is John Kennedy’s wonderful Intuition in Card College Light. The clever routining does the setup for you. On Cards Across, once I was brave enough to try Bill Malone’s version (on the L&L tapes)I never looked back.

Other's for consideration but not mentioned: Wild Card, Poker Deal(s), Card Warp (maybe you did mention it, if so, I forgot), Card in Lemon / wallet/other impossible location, Oil & Water. I'm not a big fan of OOTW, but is the trick most lay people show me as one they were taught (I've never had any lay person mention/show the infamous 21 card trick).

My favorite and go to trick, and yes it’s a gaff…The invisible deck. Probably one of the first things I bought at a magic shop as a kid. Still carry a deck with me all the time. When somebody asks me to do a card trick, that’s what I do. I always start with…..” this is not a card trick, it’s an experiment, I had a dream last night and you where in it….”. It kills every time

Great content, great list! I would have changed one of the pieces (triumph due to personal taste) for "Be Honest, what is it?". My reason? It is one of the few pieces of magic that is not a pick a card trick, can last 1 minute or 3, and has a major surprise at the end. Also totally customisable (see "remember me" by Colin mcleod) :)

I first learned Out of This World from Paul Curry's book, "Magician's Magic," when I was in elementary school. I must have checked it out of the public library. I showed it first to my younger sister, and made all the choices. I guess she must have been about four or five at the time. I did the final reveal and she was totally convinced that she had in fact made all the correct guesses. My mom was looking on and laughed and said, "No, it's just a clever trick." After all these years, I still do that trick, but with a lot of refinements.

Fun and enjoyable topic! I enjoy most of these effects. I don't have particular favorite versions for each one. There is one exception. I love John Bannon's Play It Straight Triumph. One of my favorite card effects doesn't even have a formal name, although I call it Synchronicity in the various versions I do for various groups. This is the effect that is is in the Introduction to Woody Aragon's wonderful book, A Book in English. He presents it as an effect for a couple. One the first card effects I learned when I returned to magic in the 1990s was Dai Vernon's Twisting the Aces from Michael Ammar's series of videotape, Easy to Master Card Miracle. In the version I eventually created (the moves are pretty much the same) which I call the Order of Operations, instead of the Aces, I used four blank-faced cards, each with a mathematical operation on them: addition (+), subtraction (-). multiplication (x), and division. I then tell a story about the order in which we learn these basic operations, revealing each symbol as I go.

I actually don’t consider Back In Time as a Triumph effect - presented as intended more of a time travel effect - but great list. Dani Ortiz Open Triumph as well as Playing It Straight are my favorites. Aaronson’s Red Sea Passover and Daryl’s Crossed Thoughts are favorite Card across.
@EruditeMagic
@EruditeMagic Год назад
But the time travel is to a point back in time when the deck was not mixed up face up and face down? It's an issue of plot or premise, but not necessarily of the magic, I think. Thanks for taking time to comment!
@dmtucson1520
@dmtucson1520 Год назад
@@EruditeMagic True - but the B in T effect goes even further as to going back in time to before the card was put in the deck. Unlike the Triumph premise where mixed up cards are unmixed, in B in T, that is just one of the incremental outcomes of going back in time as opposed to the main climax of the trick. But agree, it's a plot/premise nuance.

Red Hot Mama and OOTW were both on my list. As great as ACAAN is in the hands of Berglas, I've never seen a published routine (aside from the Mem Deck stuff) that I found satisfying. Ambitious Card and Ten Card Poker Deal are both on my list. I think we tend to overlook AC because it's so well known among magicians but it still staggers lay audiences. I've also got a very strong affection for Sam the Bellhop (though I think it'd be my special mention rather than in my actual five.) I'm not a fan of Torn and Restored Card. It always seemed underwhelming to me as a spectator. When it's great, it always seems to me to be great because of the personality of the performer (ie, Wiilliamson, etc.) Finally, I think I'd probably have a Monte in my top five -- because I love gambling routines. Even a classic monte would work for me.

@jimdriscoll
@jimdriscoll Год назад
What? Who came up with this list? I couldn’t disagree more! Well, maybe that’s an gross overstatement. When I first saw the subject for this edition, I actually came up with my own list before I watched (those I thought would make the top five, not necessarily my favorites). I predicted three correctly. Torn and Restored and Cards Across were not on my predicted list. Instead, I had Ambitious Card and Dr. Daily’s Last Trick. I still think Ambitious Card should be included but I could easily be talked out of Dr. Daily’s. You asked what version of OOTW we use. My favorite is Out of this World, Blah, Blah, Blah by Jon Armstrong. I use it with face up jokers that separate into red and blue backs. I think it makes the separation more visible and impactful.
@EruditeMagic
@EruditeMagic Год назад
Great feedback, Jim! I can tell you why ACR didn't make it onto my list: it starts too much like a pick-a-card trick (except David Regal's excellent version), and becomes the same thing repeated until the performer tires of repeating the feat. *THAT SAID*, I can't deny that people seem to like it. 😄🤷🏻 Doc Dailey's Last Trick is another good trick, but not many versions. You pretty much do it like he did, and hope it's not your last. 😆 Thanks again for taking the assignment seriously and giving us the best counterargument [yet]!
