This is Video No 6 in the Glenwood Base Heater Set. Here, the stove has been running untouched for 19 hours and now we do an ash shake down and reload with coal. Again the ease of operation of the Glenwood is apparent. I did it all with one hand while holding the camera in the other. The Glenwood consumed about 10-15 pounds of coal since the last loading.

william; after watching your videos I too ordered and just received my own Glenwood base heater No. 6. I found the instructional aspect of the videos very valuable for "abbreviating the learning curve" in operating it. Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to make and share these so well-detailed videos. We absolutely LOVE our stove. All the best to ya!

Thank you for taking the time to show all of us.Coal Burning is easy, compared to putting wood in a wood stove ,over and over all day long.and wood does not last all night even when you bank your fire or set your flue damper down for the night. My Father told me about Coal stoves and how great they was when he was a kid and how cheap coal was on every street corner in The City of St Louis.People really messed up trusting Utililty Electric Companys to keep electric bills low in price.the tables have turned on Americans for the worst ,now Americans have become Slaves to Big Electric Companys.and the Electric Companys burn Coal to Generate Electric for you and you and you.

Hi this is wsherrick here. I don't use paint on my stoves. It fades very quickly when the stove is used. I use stove polish. My favorite is William's Stove Polish. You use it just like shoe polish. It's very easy and you can touch up the stove at any time. I use Never Dull to polish the nickel. It works very well also.

Great video! I picked up a very small potbelly stove at a flea market ($35!!) and installed it in my shop. It's 14'W and 20'D and it seems to do pretty good. The stove is only about 28" tall including legs. I've been getting pretty good with it......I thought. I may not have been operating as effeciently as I could be. I've been loading it about 2 shovels full an hour. It doesn't have the rear damper but seeing how you set your others really helped cause my lower was practically wide open! I just never knew for sure and was doin my best lol. I'm hoping to get longer, smoother burn times now. Thanks man!

Thank you for sharing. I've just recently learned about coal stoves. I grew up with wood stoves. It's something I'm going to consider doing soon. Nice stove and thanks for the explanation on size and shape. Impressive heat put out per pound too.

Once you discover how vastly superior coal is as a fuel, you will never go back to wood burning.

Just rewatched these videos on the Glenwood. I'm thinking of installing a Glenwood cookstove in the kitchen and maybe a smaller Glenwood heat stove in the rear parlor instead of the Surdiac I have now. Certainly the Glenwood has the right "look" for my house and I'm so impressed with how easily you seem to run this thing! Wow.

The secondary draft should be left open some when new coal is added. It will burn off the natural gas that comes out of coal after loading a new pot. I new a guy who had that one set up nicely. He wouldn't run it at night he was afraid of it. Ha. I was burning 24/7 with a Chubby and thought what a waste of a stove on his part. It was in great shape and setup in a very safe way.

James Tom Australia is a fairly large producer of coal no? I imagine the availability is there. Does Australia have laws against burning coal or having stoves (wood or coal)? I’m not familiar with Australian law. If not you might be able to ship one to your location. It’ll obviously be more expensive but depending on your situation it could pay itself off.

@shithitthefanman Thanks for watching! The other brands of base heaters that I would suggest are, Oakvale Andes, Crawfords, Bakers, and Household. All of these stoves were made in New England and are very similar in design and concept as the Glenwoods. You will never regret the decision to buy one of these magnificent stoves. Look on the Barnstable Stove Shop website and the Antique Stove Hospital web site. The owners of these stores are friendly, helpful and honest.

William, your Glenwood is certainly a beauty. I will try to get a nice restored one as yours. I've been burning coal for years and will never go back to wood or pellet stoves. I own a Drolet gravity fed oil stove as well and despite the energetic bright flame that it produces, I prefer the glow of a hand fired coal fire hands down. My coal stove is a Vermont Castings Vigilant II and has a damper that will redirect exhaust gases down the sides of the stove to the level of the ash pan and back up a zig zagged channel in the back to the chimney. I wonder if that is similar to the operation of a base burner like the Glenwood?
@wsherrick
@wsherrick 14 лет назад
This stove is a base burner stove. Watch the first two videos in the series and you can see the details of what a base burner is. Direct Draft is when the base burning damper is set to allow smoke to go directly out from the stove to the stove pipe. Base burning mode is when the damper is set to re direct the smoke down, under and around the bottom the stove before it gets to the stove pipe. This feature makes Base Heaters one of the most efficient stoves ever made, up to 95% efficient.

Price of a base burner is no secret. I purchased and restored including all nickel plating on a three sided mica base burner for $3000. Two new fire pots cost $80. Glad you found a new venue to peddle your wares.

I'm glad you like your Harmon,but; how is it easier? Do you not get dead spots in the corners? Yes? Do you get ash build up in the front or corners? Do you have to poke it from the bottom or top, probably yes. How is it for keeping dust out of the house? Does all the ashes go into the ash pan? How much ash does the ash pan hold before it is full and spills The Glenwood has none of those problems, ever. I know from the many people I know who have Harmons that they all have these issues.

What is the difference between your stove and the Glenwood Oak Stove? I can't begin to tell you how over wood I am - up every 3 hrs to add - bark all over the place - dealing with snow and ice when I'm out of dried wood. Wish I knew about this 4 years ago when we got the wood stove insert - oh well "seek and ye shall find" the Glenwood may be a little out of my budget - can you suggest something else?

William, love your videos ! Question tho, Im going to have to put up a stainless steel double wall chimney so would I be able to burn lump coal in an older parlor stove as well as anthacite coal and also do I need to install the fiberglass rope seals around the loading doors and ash pan doors??
@wsherrick
@wsherrick 10 лет назад
No if you have a standard chimney in good shape you do not need a stainless steel liner. If you are going to invest in a double wall stainless steel chimney, check and see how much it would be to build a superior masonry chimney. It shouldn't be that much more expensive than the stainless steel one. You don't need rope gaskets on good quality Turn Of The Century Stoves. The fittings were machined to go together with an air tight fit. It is a big myth that old stoves are not air tight. Most often the hinge pins are worn and need replacement or they need to be correctly positioned so the doors fit right.

It is Stove sized coal. Rice coal is way too small for a hand fired stove.

Hi William, we moved into a home with almost the same stove and have been burning wood in it. Our stove is a Glenwood Oak No.116. We have a 10'x 10' box in our basement full of coal. Do you think we could use that coal to burn? I dont how old it is and have never run a coal burning stove. This is only our our second year of burning with wood. We live in Maine and this winter has been brutally cold. I would love to try burning coal if we can. I was looking up how to burn wood efficiently and found your video.
@wsherrick
@wsherrick 10 лет назад
Hi Emil. I'm sorry I didn't see your comment sooner. A Glenwood Modern Oak is designed for coal. Once you find out how much better coal is than wood, you'll make the switch. You need to find out what type of coal you have in the basement. It would be either Bituminous or Anthracite. Bituminous burns with a yellow flame and Anthracite burns with a blue smokeless flame. You can ask all the questions you want on the Coal Forum. Just Google nepacrossroads.

Is using coal any cheaper than natural gas?
@wsherrick
@wsherrick 10 лет назад
In most cases I would say that it is. Find a fuel cost comparison chart and plug in the price of various fuels for your area. If you live anywhere that has coal available it will be much cheaper than any other fuel, including wood unless you cut it yourself.
