I bought an Imperial knife from WalMart about 24 years ago for fishing. It was my second Imperial knife as I lost the first one overboard while fishing. I have managed to keep this knife all those years. It may not hold an edge but it has served me very well and is easy to sharpen and it cost around $15!

I bought my first D2 knife in 1972. It was a Chubby Hueske semi-skinner and I used it for 30 years until a horse went ballistic when he smelled blood and spread the saddle and contents of the saddle bags over a couple acres. I found some of the gear, but not the Hueske, not even with the metal detector I brought up the next weekend. That knife would dress an elk with no problem and with no need to touch up the edge. Yes, it was harder to sharpen than some other steels, but it just took a little more time and effort. However, the edge holding was fantastic. The only problem is that you must keep the blade clean and dry it off after using it. It will rust. I have had several D2 knives since and they have all performed very well. I'm going to buy the SOG for one of my grandkids.

That's one hell of a line-up for some really nice, and cost effective folders. I have D2 blades which do hold an edge well, and don't require too much care in normal use. That said, after a week on a sailboat you can expect some light surface rust however.

Dave, the Rat might not be the sexiest, but it will be ergonomically one of the best users. My hand really locks into the knife and when you pick it up, it becomes apparent how you’re supposed to use it. The jimping is well done. I just wish they put slightly more aggressive texture into the frn scales. I really like the Wyvern and the Kendo. I have a Thorn and a Naja and these companies are resetting the quality benchmarks at this range. However when I need a hard use beater for work, the Rat is always on my short list for outdoor tasks. Oh you forgot the CJRB Centros. That might be my next knife.

Just received today, a new Harnds Vanguard, it's a thumb stud one hand opener, that flicks open as fast and smoothly as any flipper, it runs on bronze washers and I gotta say, I've only had it 3-4 hrs so time will tell, but it's just a great looking, butter smooth operating, large edc size knife. The blade is a hair shy or 1/16" shy of 4", of thick D2 and finally believe it or not the spine of the is champfered off. A home run for sure at $32 on Amazon

Thank you so much for this vid. The info was presented extremely well n will help me n many of my friends make an informed decision as we have been looking for reasonable priced, quality, d2 folders. I'm so sick of all the reviews of ridiculously overpriced folders that in some cases, are lower quality than the fantastic knives you have shown here. A folder is a tool, paying $300 for one, unless I'm a 'collector' is insane, I don't care what steel it is. I never subscribed to the 'my knife is cooler n more expensive than yours' mentality. If you have a D2 knife that rusts easily it isn't D2. I make D2 fillet knives used in saltwater ht to HRC60-61 with a 1000 temper for toughness. The secret to affordable D2 Sharpening is Non Loading SiC Wet/Dry Sandpaper in various grits and a mouse pad. Then to finish the edge. Take the slurry you made from the sandpaper. Place the Slurry on a clean leather strop. Begin Stropping the blade.
@MountainFisher
@MountainFisher 2 года назад
Or just use a 300-400 medium grit diamond stone. I only use real diamonds in my stropping 5000 grit/4 micron diamond compound. An abrasive engineer told me to use real diamonds, manmade are rounded off. Same price, it is how the diamond is attached to the stone that's expensive.
@MrRourk
@MrRourk 2 года назад
@@MountainFisher it says affordable :)
@MountainFisher
@MountainFisher 2 года назад
@@MrRourk Look at the cheaper EZE LAP stones, run under $20 and a Tech Diamond Tools choose from 2000 grit to 14,000 grit, 50% concentration (heavy) 5 gram syringe is $11 for whatever grit you want to finish with. Now how does that compare to buying a bunch of silicon wet dry sandpaper over 5 years? That is how long the diamond items will last and time is money too vs. messing with sandpaper and the mess. You use very little compound once the leather has built some up. My syringes are 5 years old and I have about a 1/4 left. I make knives and sometimes put a mirror finish on a small one by hand. Diamond is very aggressive and after I wet grind to 600 grit I hand rub it with 1200 grit sandpaper with diamond compound mixed in. After that it is strictly leather and diamond to 1 micron-14,000/16,000 grit. Hand rubbing is the only way you can put a mirror polish on certain steels like D2, if you use a buffer you get an orange peel effect. Now you know more than you even wanted to know.

Just sayin' Regarding the difference between a wharncliffe and sheepfoot. I think the Cold Steel Tuff is a classic Wharncliff as for sheep foot I see that profile mostly on rigger's knives (folders and fix blade) like Myerchin and part of the kit on multiple blade folders like "swiss army" and boy scout knives. Wharncliff has a more sweeping drop in the point; a sheep foot the point drops hard the tip to me resembles those blunt tip scissors we used in grade school. The reason for the sheepfoot on a rigger's knife (that is to say a fixed blade, folders are not very practical at sea) is that sailors had to work cordage on the ship's deck in the directions at the same time as well as working hindered high up. Pointed knives are very dangerous in those circumstances. I have not seen a one handed folding rigger. If you ship out you'll probably be better off with a cheap knife either you'll lose it overboard or one of your mates will steal it.

I bought the SOG Terminus XR in D2 and crimson G-10. The only reason to buy the more expensive S35VN version is if you like the carbon fibre handle. I personally consider powder steel a bit excessive for folding knives, which for me are disposable in a way. I will usually have a S35VN fix blade as a back up (SOG Pillar or ESEE-4). I get the collectability of premium folders, but I buy powder steel knives that are going to be bomb proof. *proceeds to lose bomb proof knife*
@acid6urns
@acid6urns Год назад
powder stainless steels on folders makes exponentially more sense than a fixed blade. they tend to have lots of edge retention but not a lot of toughness. now, things like 3v or cruwear make sense on a fixed blade, but toughness and edge retention are just as important for folders as fixed blades

A lot of people like them, but I've been disappointed with them. I've ordered two different models and ended up returning both. The actions were really poor. Maybe I just got unlucky, I don't know, but it turned me off the brand. I've been much happier with Bestech and Civivi. They both have excellent fit and finish in the models I have and their actions are superb.

@@abc456f Man, the Cutjack is really popular. Haven't seen it but what was wrong with yours?
@abc456f
@abc456f 4 года назад
@@LarryEMorse The action was gritty and stiff. I might have been able to take it apart and work on it, but I felt it was unacceptable to get it out of the box and it being that bad, so I returned it and got my money back. Same exact thing happened with the piercer I bought. Sent it back as well. So I've ignored Steel Will since. Maybe I just got unlucky but with other brands that I've been happy with, Real Steel, Bestech to name a couple, in the same price range, I don't feel I want to take another chance with Steel Will.

The different opinions concerning whether the one knife is a sheep's foot or a warn cliff doesn't have to be. - I personally think it's a sheep's cliff if you ask me. 😂 Thanks for the review. 👍

@@msharmall7298 on mine, it had little to no blade play, which im very surprised by, since it's only a 49.99 retail knife

I like the steel will and the sog🙂 I’ve had a knife in D2 though and it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. It took time to sharpen and I always got micro chips. Maybe I had a lemon

There are three ways to temper a D2 blade. At 450 for 2 hours 2x, gives a hard brittle edge, even with cryo in liquid nitrogen it is still chippy. I temper my fixed blades at 1000 degrees with a LN quench for 24 hours then temper again at 1000 degrees a 2nd time for 2 hours and knife is done. The 1000 temper raises the hardness back up, but imparts toughness. Is it hard to sharpen? At 60-61 hard yes, but that is mostly the vanadium carbides which are actually 0.2 points harder on the Mohs scale than tungsten carbide. As you can see these cheaply heat treated blades from China mostly are not properly heat treated and you can tell because they're too cheap and chip, mine won't unless you abuse them. For any high vanadium steel buy a 400 grit diamond sharpener, a good one and after you've formed a proper bevel then use a hard ceramic or Buck Stone, then strop using 2000 grit diamond compound on leather, then use 5000 compound on a flat hardwood board. For a good working or butcher's edge stop at 1200 or 800 grit.
