After spending a few days dispersed camping outside Ash Fork Arizona, I decided to move on. The weather report was showing rain and snow in the forecast. And the overnight temperatures were going to drop down into the low 20°s. So it seemed like a good time to move on and find a warmer area. After looking at the options, I decided Prescott would make a good destination.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.
In an effort to help viewers search for the best prices on products that I use, I’ve started an Amazon Influencer link:
www.amazon.com...
My hope is that you will use this link as a starting point to search for the best price. If you're looking for an item that isn't listed, feel free to drop me a question or comment and I will do my best to find a link.

The Kaibab and Coconino National Forests, a bit farther north and east of Prescott, have more options for dispersed camping and generally allow full 14 day stays. Things still kinda cold at night up high, but should be warming soon as Spring progresses. Prescott National Forest has had problems in the past with overcrowding and people trashing the campsites, drugs, crime, etc, so that’s why things are pretty locked down there.

I was scared that coffee was not going to appear in this video. I really like the music you use. Beautiful spot, and great looking chili. You appear to be getting pretty tan - makes the color of your eyes really stand out. I am finally pulling out all my "good" things and using them, for instance my family's handed-down good silver that's been in a cupboard for decades. I now eat my breakfast out of the good crystal bowls I've been "keeping for special occasions". People are funny, aren't they? I'm glad you're getting back into nature, it's good for the soul.

Great video, Scott! You're not far from a friend's cabin. My friend built a three story cabin and the views from his cabin are amazing. I always loved the Prescott National Forest (PNF). Highway 89 was my favorite motorcycle ride all the way up to Flagstaff. There are many dispersed camping sites along the highway and I used my motorcycle to find beautiful hidden spots. There is van life community in Cottonwood but I've never been to it. Bob Wells did a vlog on it some years ago. Fort Tuthill is located near the fairgrounds just south of "Flag" on 89A. We dispersed camp there if we didn't rent a cabin on Tuthill. Fort Tuthill was a military resort of sorts.

I made a note of the spot you were at in the beginning in my atlas. I'm definitely learning there are more cooler weather options than Arizona in the summer. That is the nice thing about living on wheels, you can follow the better weather. You're smart, it is always best to think ahead and not get yourself stuck. I had never heard of tooth powder before. It's so inte5that the stores out west can differ so much than the east side of the country. Oh, I am in Indiana. My hometown is home to IU so it's a nice small town but yet rather big. I'm thinking once I get a van I will try to park for free but it will be limited but I could save a lot of money working for a year while living in it. Anyway, I am going to have to check out the tooth powder. Interesting. I know you make your own tortillas and I do too from time to time so I was wondering if you had a video of you making them? Happy trails!

I realize I sure do like the 'day in a life of" videos. Thanks for this vid! Yesterday I was watching your 5-year anniversary video from last year. I'm really interested in the van. I can't decide whether to get a compact cargo van, a minivan, or a suburban, and I was interested in your decisions regarding passibility and terrain and weather. In general, have you been satisfied with where the van can get you? Can you get seriously heavy-duty tire for those? I've been eye-balling the Nissan, but I hear that although they've moved away from proprietary tires (thank goodness), the tires available aren't great. Any particular repairs common with the Dodge? There ain't no place like a PNW forest!...but I do like to see the videos in desert areas. I've never been, and I guess I probably will hold off coming down from Canada until the restrictions and/or testing lighten up a bit more.
@StaticCamperVan
@StaticCamperVan 2 года назад
These Ram ProMaster City cargo vans are pretty versatile vehicles. If you look back through my videos you can watch a couple of videos about a major engine problem with some of these vans. All in all, I’ve been very happy with my van. If you’re looking to do serious off-roading, there will need to be modifications made not just tires. I don’t recommend the Nissan as they have had major transmission problems. They also have a very small payload capacity as evidenced by the tiny tires. The Nissan was designed as a city delivery vehicle.

I've been through Prescott and the forest around it a few times and, for some inexplicable reason, I get an uncomfortable feeling there. Oh well.

Sorry to hear that. I can relate to having an uncomfortable feeling at 6000 feet.

Scott do you know of any places in Prescott city I can park for a night? It's gonna rain this weekend so campsites aren't my preference

I'm sorry, I didn't spend any time in Prescott. I only know of the dispersed camping.

Don't you need to reserve the camping spot in that side of the country? I am glad you got a good location to stay there.
@StaticCamperVan
@StaticCamperVan 2 года назад
No reservations, first camper to claim the spot can stay for up to seven days.

How do you spend your day when you boondock for days like this?
@StaticCamperVan
@StaticCamperVan 2 года назад
Lots of walking and time spent cooking. Video editing also eats up a lot of time.

Do you ever buy peanut butter and jelly for a quick protein snack?

Very rarely. I usually have a jar of peanut butter on hand but it's not my favorite
