Nine Mile Reef is definitely one of the most amazing and underrated dives in the region. It is located on the Southern tip of the Gold Coast, off of Tweed Heads. It is a popular diving spot in winter as during colder months it is visited by a large population of Grey Nurse Sharks. However, in summer it also offers spectacular dives. Giant bull rays, leopard sharks, wobbegongs, huge schools of pelagic fish and fevers of eagle ray is what you can see there in from December to May.
The top of the reef sits at about 10 metres deep, dropping to 30 metres with the drop-off covered in numerous hard and soft corals. The dive there is usually done as a drift and is deeper than 18m, so you need Advanced qualification to visit this dive site. The can be challenging when the currents are strong, which is usually the case in the summer months. However large marine species love current, and this is what makes diving Nine Mile Reef a truly spectacular experience. Luckily on my last dive there, we got best of all: mild current and large animals.
