I really appreciated your video! Made a long bench cushion (and two back cushions) for my daughter's dorm and was originally not going to do the long zipper up the sides, but after my struggle to fit the wrapped cushions into a thin cotton casing with practically the entire back seam opened, I decided to do it your way for the final cushion covers, and it was so much easier. I used a concealed zipper method, but that was the only difference. They came out beautifully!

And as a former English teacher, who often had students write “process” papers, you get an A+ for clarity & an excellent sense of audience awareness! Extremely helpful! Now I can tackle that fabric I’ve had washed & ready to go for months. Thanks a bunch!

THIS was the video that made me confident enough to finally tackle my project. Thank you! I made the mistake of considering my batting as part of the cushion height on my first cover. I used 4inch high foam wrapped in batting that added another 1-1.5 inches of fluff, so I thought "the end height will be 5 inches" and used this in my fabric cutting calculations. This cover turned out to be baggy, so I did the rest of my measurements based off of the foam's 4 inch height and the covers came out beautiful and snug.

Thank you!!! I watched this multiple times. I am a very beginner sewer, and I couldn't grasp the part about cutting the inside corners at all. BUT I did a "practice" cushion and it worked! To the other people out there questioning if she misspoke about the seam allowance numbers, she DID NOT! To put it another way, (thickness - 1) / 2 = D distance you are measuring out from the THREAD LINE (not the edge) AS WELL AS the folded fabric edge. When you sew and leave another .5 inches on each side, that is how you get back to your total thickness.
@lilytchensakai3102
@lilytchensakai3102 4 года назад
Thanks for confirming this! I posted the other day that I didn't understand the inside corner either, but after I read your post, I decided to do a "practice corner" using paper and tape and it all made sense after that. Cutting a piece of 2x2 would only give you 4" depth, but when you go in 1/2 in seam allowance, you get an extra inch of depth. If that's still confusing to you guys, go ahead and do a practice corner--it only takes 2 minutes and it will clear everything up.

Just finished my bench and seat cushions following a diff RU-vid where u sew in the 5” border. What a pain! Sewing around the corners was so hard. Zipper went on one side and I wished it went around the corners! Placed cushion in a plastic bag to slip in otherwise it would’ve been almost impossible to insert. I wish I had seen this tutorial sooner! Live n learn. Im deleting other saved videos. This is 5 star! 👏👏👏

I know this is not a new video but just wanted to post a THANK YOU. I was able to make four bench cushions with zippers, I have always avoided projects that need zippers. Tip: I made a 2x2.5 template for cutting the box corners after the zipper was attached and labeled the edge that was to go along the fold, for me that was the longer edge. No confusion and went quicker. Since I was making bench cushions I had to use the long side whenever you said the short side. Another tip for those making bench cushions: work out your measurements carefully. I first chose 45” wide fabric but would have had sooooo much wasted fabric in order to fit 47” wide cushions, needed almost 3yds per cushion. Getting 54” wide fabric was much better, needing less than 1.5yds per cushion. Again, thank you for your clear instructions, I really was able to make them. Your video was encouraging and enabling.

I purchased my “project runway-Brother” machine a few years ago but was soon sidetracked with 3D printing as my winter project. I made this today and it worked out really well. I was a bit confused on the final length of the cutting instructions, but I figured it out. My pillow was a 17” x 15” x 3”. My final cut piece was 37” long by 21” wide. (17 + 3 + 1) and (15 +15 +3 +3 + 1). It came out very nice.

Ruth Alvarez according to your math, it seems that you have doubled the width and not the length as discussed in the video. Does it make a difference which side is doubled?
@roadrunner123
@roadrunner123 4 года назад
Linda Balkovec The reason I did that, which was confusing at first, was because it was a chair cushion and the width of the chair was wider than the depth of the chair and my fabric had a specific pattern direction unlike yours. Regardless, it came out great!
@lindabalkovec1089
@lindabalkovec1089 4 года назад
Ruth Alvarez Thanks for clarifying. I just completed my cover and I ended up doubling the width because my fabric wasn’t long enough to double in length. And then this gave me enough fabric to make 2 covers. My fabric was double sided with 2 colours, so it all worked out! 😊👍
@LeanneP76
@LeanneP76 4 года назад
Hi Ruth, can you please explain the corners. She cuts out a 2.5" x 2.5" corner. Taking off the 0.5" it seems like she's ending up with a 4" deep cushion. What am I missing here? It doesn't seem like I'm the only one confused about this.
@roadrunner123
@roadrunner123 4 года назад
Leanne Peggram I don’t know if I can explain it, but if your cushion depth is 6 inches, you would cut those boxed corner squares at 3” because when you put the top and bottom together, it equals 6”. So, your fit is snug but it comes out correct. In addition, when you fold over the corner to sew the 1/2” seam allowance, it does dot affect the height of the boxed cushion. Cut a square out of a corner of a fabric, try 3”, and sew it the 1/2” for practice. Once you sew it, measure the height and you will see that the seam allowance does not affect the height of the final product. In my example, it remains 3” in height and when I put both sides together, I have the 6” depth required by the cushion. The 1/2 seam allowance affects the size of the squared box, but not the height of it. It is as if you take a blouse and decide to take in the sides of the blouse by 1/2 inch. You will not affect the height (length) of the blouse by sewing the sides. I hope it makes sense.

A brilliant boxed cushion tutorial! Great idea to box the corners then add the zipper!

I've been wanting to recover the cushions on my "vintage" sofa, chairs, and ottoman for years. It's a daunting project since there's 11 huge cushions to do. Liked and saved the video for when I'm ready. Gotta do a bunch of math, and find a load of the perfect fabric and zippers. Thank you!

Great video! I'm an older single guy getting ready to live in my RV and I'm thinking about buying a sewing machine and redoing all the cushion covers in the RV.

Fabulous! Thank you! Just got a used set with white cushions. 2 dogs, no bueno. Now I can recover when they kill the 'white'!

Thank you -this is a genius method for a boxed cushion cover. I need to make a cover for my dog's bed, which of course is taken on and off quite a bit because it gets dirty, and the long around-the-corner zipper is going to be great for that!

I made 24x36x3 cushions based off this tutorial and they turned out great! I just want to say thank you so much and keep the tutorials coming! You did an excellent job explaining how do everything. FYI- I've never sewed anything in my life! (I used Brother sewing machine XM2701 MODEL.)
