You are correct about the Mountain Cur. The best I've ever been in the squirrel woods with came from the accidental cross with a treeing Walker.

Do you guys thing a Westie could be trained to do this…I am a hunter but typically not with a dog but my westie she has a passion for squirells and she has a great nose. My back lot is heavily wooded and we have 80-100 squirells living back there. She grew up chasing them to tree and she will sit there under that tree as good as any of these dogs seem to do. I did not teach her any of that its just the terrier in her. I know in Scotland they used them at one point for running rabbits and other small animals. Honestly I could use a reason to be in the woods.

I bought a beagle Daushhund mix for rabbits but he hunts squirrels instead. I've gotten hundreds of squirrels with him in the year and a half I've had him.

I hunt with a fella that has cur and when they go off running deer my mtn feist stays true to the squirrels. His dogs have much better nose till my lil man came on 3 years old. It’s a process. Mix your dogs hunt them together and enjoy not only the adventure but the growth. Do what works for you. I enjoy the process

Mt Currdogs were bred specifically for treeing!! A lot of other dogs make a good squirre dog but you don’t seem to have to work as hard to get most curdogs to take to it as you do with other breeds. Hounds can be great too but tend to be kinda rangy for your average hunter and most wont hunt close by sometimes. A good fiest is hard to beat though too if you get the right one!! Main thing is keep trying dogs till you find what fits your style and just enjoy the process of making a dog! 👍 Great video man!!

Funny u say that I trained my shit zhu poodle mix how to hunt squirrels and rabbits at 8 months old and he's pretty great at it. Not even the size of one of those curs legs and he's fast as hell. I watch him run circles around dogs that size they just can't keep up with him. Only thing is I'm scared a hawk might swoop down and snag him or something. Actually taught his mom and aunt how to hunt before him too. Besides a couple of my beagles I would say they have been some of the best hunting dogs I've ever used.

Where do you get a good Mountain Cur puppy from and how much would be expected to pay for one ? Do they also make good home pets as well during the off season ?
