We all know that weather conditions etc have a big effect on efficiency. This makes it extremely hard to use your excellent tests to compare one 6-monthly winter test with another. You really should try to include a Reference EV in there, so when this particular Reference EV does similar efficiency in 2 of your tests one year apart, we'll know that it's fair to compare all the cars in both tests with each other. And if the results are 10% different thanks to weather differences, we can make our own judgement/guess about this for the other cars. I would like to suggest that you always include an Ioniq 38, for several reasons. It's a typical size for a small family hatchback, which is a very popular type of car in UK especially. Many of us will be looking to buy 2nd hand, and those on a tighter budget will obvs be more likely to be avoiding higher cost of brand new, and also looking for least electricity costs when topping up. It's also known to be extremely efficient, especially in winter, and it's a great example fop how an EV in this category should perform. It would be good to highlight just how poor the efficiency of some EVs is, especially in the smaller car categories. You have some efficient EVs in the larger size here, Genesis is not bad, Tesla Y is excellent, but nothing at all that's really efficient in the smaller cars. While you're at it, why not also include an Ioniq 6 with 18" rims (even if you have to import them from Korea specially - n/a in UK for some daft reason) as a Reference EV for larger saloons/hatchbacks. Oh, and can you please stop tailgating/slip-streaming quite so much? You should leave a lot of car-lengths between each vehicle so you know that turbulence from the car in front isn't distorting the figures. Thank you!

I don't get the Tesla Model 3 fanboi boast about practicality. It has a boot, not a batchack and thus is fatally flawed. If Herr Musk has released the Model 3 as a hatch ack I could understand the hype. I was interested in the MG4 but the dealer network is awful so I have decided to give that a miss. Instead I chose a used ID.3 58kWh. Does everything we want, isn't a huge bloaty blob and is a lot cheaper to run than an equivalent Golf.
@danbradley6962

I wouldn’t say the model 3 is flawed, if you need the extra practicality of a hatch then go for the model y. A 3 with a hatch would be a unbeatable combination for a lot of people though.
@Pesmog

I have been a passenger in three model 3's and while they had brilliant handling and a decent range the rest of it didn't really impress me. They didn't have that premium feel that the price suggests they should have. Build quality wasn't great, it needs a hatch as you say and it would also need more manual controls before I would get my wallet out. Newer EV's from other manufacturers have sensibly avoided having every control touch screen based.

Not sure where you're seeing a lukewarm reception. I probably watched 100+ hours of comparison tests for a huge range of electric SUVs and the consensus was pretty clear that the model Y is the better buy in most cases. I looked at the ioniq 5, the ev6, ix1, ix3, q4 etron. Model Y was the outright winner in most categories that matter - cheaper, faster charging, range, supercharge network, best tech, most storage. Unless you have Home charging then people have charging problems . Coz what you Stated about the Ionic 5 and the Already range improvement probably the Most Important part of an EV ,is best imo wait till 2030 where we will see Any New Batteries Tech etc and How many public chargers . At the moment Tesla is still best EV simply coz they understood there’s No point making a EV without charging points and they took the Brave decision to install chargers them selfs instead of Relying on governments or companies installing them …as we can see .

People say this - but this is price of a Ford Focus. The only new comparble cars much cheaper would be the likes of Dacia. But that would then be at cheapest end not 'reasonable' mid-range. Whats affordable depends on your mileage. I have night time tariff charging at home at 7p/kWh . That means a typical drive per week for me ( mostly commute) is 300miles and costs me £5 in 'feule' i.e. electricity . If in a petrol/diesel I estimate something nearer £40 per week. So I'm saving £35 per week or about £1,800 per year. Drive it for 10 years and you save £18,000. So - taking 10 yera ownership into account - compared to a choice of a new petrol/ diesel this a car that is effective list price of £26k - £18k --- or £6k. You can't even get a second hand low mileage car for that - even a Dacia! Thats' before you takje into account zero servicing costs (even no brakes) , LEZ charges, road tax and the like. Obviosuly if you drive far less than then this largely won't apply

The best electric vehicle brand is subjective and depends on individual preferences and needs. Some popular electric vehicle brands include: 1 Tesla: Known for their sleek design, cutting-edge technology, and long-range electric vehicles, Tesla has become a leader in the electric vehicle market. 2 Chevrolet: Chevy offers a range of electric vehicles, including the Bolt, which has a range of over 250 miles on a single charge. 3 Nissan: Nissan offers the LEAF, one of the first mass-market electric vehicles, and has continued to innovate in the electric vehicle space. 4 BMW: BMW offers a range of electric vehicles, including the i3, which features a unique design and cutting-edge technology. 5 Jaguar: Jaguar offers the I-PACE, a luxury electric SUV with impressive performance and range. Ultimately, the best electric vehicle brand will depend on a number of factors, including budget, range requirements, and personal preferences. It's recommended to do research, test drive different models, and consult with a trusted expert before making a purchase decision.

@mancsaint In the real world many do far more than 50 miles a day. None of the EVs you list could do the runs I formerly listed, it's impossible. EVs offer a very limited range and prior planning would be needed for any distance driving Inc extra time for the journey. Example-I regularly do Zakopane ( Poland) to the UK in a Transit (one hit with long range tank) which would be impossible to do in an EV. The restrictions being imposed around the world on parking is another negative ie many countries are banning EVs from multistory car parks and underground Inc. EVs are also a fire hazard and liability parked in any kind of building. EVs are NOT the answer to the world's problems as the brainwashed think they are..

But do these companies not all buy most of the batteries and other essential parts for EVs from the same manufacturers? Because EV companies don't design their own electric batteries etc. So apart from the shell and interior being different, what makes any of these cars stand out from their competitors when they are buying off the shelf electric parts? Surely petrol heads bought cars from a specific brand, because they had all developed their engines differently, had different horse power, different power settings, different sounds, they has unique engine features, they looked different etc, etc. You may as well have a milk float for all the difference these "luxury" cars will be from each other at the base level. It's business suicide for any company that falls in line with this agenda. Not to mention there's not enough precious metals on the planet to sustain this. Strip mining whole areas, cutting down large areas of trees to put wind farms up and large, rare birds of prey dying due to wind turbines compared to a bore whole in the ground, taking up very little space. I know in reality which has the least impact on the environment. But EVs aren't charged using purely wind and solar power are they, so not really green. Nothing says I support child slavery like an EV.

Bizarre. I had a Model 3 for 3 years, and now have a Model Y. Loved the 3, but the Y is better in every practical way apart from outright performance and handling which What Car don't usually care about very much (unlike Evo, TG, Car etc) so no idea why the Y doesn't even make it into the top 10. It's the best selling EV and in the top 10 for worldwide sales so that many people cant be wrong. ID Buzz is lipstick on a pig (MEB platform).
@bbbf09
@bbbf09 Год назад
Yes - but its very nice lipstick on a very nice pig. Love the ID Buzz - first genuine EV with any real 'soul' (and I own a Tesla). I don't think much wrong with MEB platform other than teething software glitches- lets see how it develops for more performance cars in future . Only (big) problem with Buzz is now near twice the price they suggested it might be during public pre-launch 2019 - so not worth it.

ID Buzz wins? I didn't even have it on the list. VWs expensive, poorly spec'd, low mileage ID range is a joke and the worst of the lot wins... OK interesting. Don't get me wrong, I like the look of it and the retro modern style appeals. But the range, the price, the lack of latest EV tech, the charging speed, means it's beaten on paper by so many big and medium EVs.

None of them, at any price, will get me from Peterborough to Gloucester and back, in the real World, without stopping for a charge. Did it this weekend in my RSQ3 and still had over 110 miles left in the tank. A Car magazine multi EV winter range test showed none of the cars got within 100 miles of their WLTP range. The iD Buzz achieved 160 miles on a full charge........not good for a vehicle marketed as a tourer.

@@80y3r9 You seriously think I drive there and back without stopping? I go to Gloucester to visit our 2 year old Granddaughter. And there's no charging facility at my son's house. @jeremygleave6593
@jeremygleave6593 Год назад
First, and most importantly consider the air quality your granddaughter is breathing. Driving your gas guzzler is not helping, 25 mpg? Give a Tesla Model Y LR or Performance a try if you want to stay with the SUV theme. Plug in for 10 minutes, not your stated hour would be enough, while you have a comfort break. You’d only need to do that on the return leg in winter. Driving a BEV is a far more relaxing experience than driving a fossil, no turbo lag or jerky & indecisive dual clutch transmission to put up with.
@malph9216
@malph9216 Год назад
@@jeremygleave6593 The negative effects on the environment during the production of an EV take around 10 years to offset against the production of an ICE car. Unless I actually scrap my 2 year old car, changing to an EV will actually have an adverse effect on the environment and pollution as someone else will still be driving my old car and I would have needed another, very expensive, EV to be built to replace it. My car does well in excess of 30 mpg on the journey even in the winter and I don't need a comfort break on a 2 hour journey. Your comments on the EV driving experience are nothing more than your opinion...which I respect, but don't agree with......And Teslas are probably one of the ugliest cars on the the road, just my opinion.

@@malph9216 Why would you wait an hour to recharge? I've just dropped Peterborough to Gloucester and back and based on my EV, that would be ONE charge for an entire 6 minutes. I can just about pee in that time, not sure I'd have time to get a coffee though. If I did, I'd take on too much charge. You see this is the problem, people just don't seem to understand how this works. Out of interest, does your son live in a flat? When you say there's no recharge at his house, I presume he has electricity but I get it, if he's in a flat or street parking then that's a bit tricky but yeah... Real world is a 6 minute recharge so actually a non issue with the right vehicle.

You might be enthusiastic about how good these cars are but the elephant in the room is the cost. These cars will never be bought by average everyday drivers, these are luxury cars that will be out of reach of most buyers. Even the MG 4 is too expensive for most buyers.
