Yikes... this video didn't age well! Skiff was just acquired by Notion and will be shutting down in 12 months. Skiff update here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fHIfJVC2kU4.html
I can't be the only one who finds Tuta's interface refreshing. I actually really like it. No clutter, no extraneous options for customization. It just works. I also appreciate the lack of something like Proton Bridge for external email clients. I feel pretty confident that they're working on the stuff that really matters.
I've said it before gentlemen but here is the truth: Email protocols are not secure by default and they never will be. Even encrypted ones are still vulnerable if the company decides to track what you are saying, and they are only really 'secure' if you send it to another person using the same service. If you are trying to truly be private, email services are not an option no matter how 'secure' it is, or claims to be. On a side note, running your own mail server doesn't fix these issues. Email as a protocol isn't meant to be private and is very vulnerable and old. If you are looking for something truly private, stick with Signal or PGP messages.
So far, this is the most comprehensive video coverage I have seen. Ninety nine percent of the rest cover just privacy. You covered real world user experience thus, when it comes to the GUI and material design and workflow of each package, one gets a really solid idea of what they're in for work flow wise. I found this section to be the most informative aspect: 3:15 onwards is really informative. It shows users what kind of experience to expect. I could see immediately when you reached Tuta, there's a sketchy wonky looking interface and very little workflow options not to mention, like with a lot of German software designed for audio and video recording, some companies have a tendancy to design in a non intuitive manner thus frustrating end users until they depart and seek something that makes sense and has more workflow options. Nice coverage and nicely presented.
Thanks for the video. I have a question about email aliases. This is all new to me so if my question doesn't make sense, I apologize. For privacy, spam reduction, and account security, is it better to create an email alias for each of my accounts that require an email using whatever provider I choose (proton, tuta, etc) or would it be better to use something like simplelogin or annonaddy to create email addresses and have them forwarded to my email provider? Thanks!
at the end of the day, it all comes down to trusting your provider. great free plan with skiff while startmail paid account shines at unlimited disposable aliases.
Skiff is dead ,how about making a video about your thoughts ? I was a paying skiff customer for 7 months ,now I have to move everything ...It came out of nowhere too
Yeah, it’s a huge bummer. Notion is shutting down all Skiff products around July or August. I made a pinned comment with an update. I ended up migrating my email to Proton.
Thanks for the video. You mentioned that Proton was/is $12.99 a month, but what you failed to mention is that this charge is for a month to month package deal which covers the VPN, email, calendar, drive and pass. If you get a 1 year plan it lowers that down to $9.99 a month for all those services. I would say that is quite reasonable, considering many people spend $30-100 a month just on streaming services alone. Well worth it if you care about your privacy? Why do you think that the service should be free or complain that they have limited services for the free tier ? Companies need to make money somehow to pay their employees? All companies are required to abide by the law to give up info if requested by the court. If you have committed a crime you can't hide behind "the company said they don't save logs". Though, I saw another video that explained a good way to protect oneself is by using a YubiKey to get into your email each time. By setting it up this way, the only way that the email can be read by ANYONE is if they have the key. I am still looking into Proton or Nord but have not chosen yet.
I always present the month-to-month price when possible because I don’t like the marketing tactics of companies listing a “monthly” price but it’s actually billed annually. However, I’ve started listing both the month-to-month and annual discounted pricing in videos. I may have come on a bit strong with my point about the service needing to be free due to my passion for Skiff, but unfortunately it was short lived since Skiff is shutting down. I’ve since switched to Proton as I now see it as the best option on the market.
@@Craylor thank you for prompt reply. I agree I do not like " monthly price" scheme either. I like free as well, but these smaller companies just do not make as much as the Googles of the world in advertising and selling info, to offer free services. As you know, it may look free on our end but Google makes its up via ads and selling your info etc. I wish Nord had an email service like Proton as I would like to get all my services from one company. I might have to get VPN service from Nord and email from Proton? Thanks again for being honest.
i dont believe in their encryption. everything is more or less backdoored. i use skiff because im too lazy to run my own mail server, and skiff lets u use custom domains
That’s another great use case for it. I use it for my personal email and still run it on a domain. I wanted to get away from Gmail and invest in a solution that would allow me ultimate flexibility long term. By moving my email to a custom domain, I can switch hosts at any time and never have to change my email again.
Does anyone know any email alternative from companies that don't collaborate directly with Israeli security, or that pay taxes elsewhere? I'm trying to participate in BDS and this part is really hard, specially because I lack the technical knowledge to discern exactly how tech companies are involved. I don't mind if certain parts or protocols were developed there, as long as they don't get revenue or help with the cyberpunk-like suppression of liberty in the West Bank. Is Tuta okay?
@@Nick-bo6rz Skiff supports PGP, so you can send encrypted mail to any PGP-enabled email (Proton Mail, StartMail, etc.). The encrypted subject lines are exclusive to Skiff users since that’s not part of normal PGP encryption.
tuta is trash and ugly + woke skiff was my favorite bc of the simple perfection... i dont trust proton either.. wtf is starmail, looks unfinished :D .... i need options or i should gift all my information to gmail
