Best Fabric for Sewing Your First Kilt?

To practice stitches, find some used wools at 2ndhand stores or Goodwill.

Denims a good substitute....even a cheap denim has that close woven feel....If your just trying to make a good practice piece to hone your techniques it a good substitute. The only thing it won't help you with is the stripes/set but I would suggest getting your other ducks in a row first might be a good idea.....the measurement around the hips....the reduction for the waist....those sort of things & then go and attack a piece PV tartan & graduate to wool at some later date. I made one in a cheap denim 1st that I bought at a street market...then I made one in a fine corduroy (don't do that ) & I learned a lot. I am a Saddle maker by trade but I have a great interest in how other things are made.....a little wood working/metalwork/cooking/throwing a pot......you name it ....if it floats my boat I'll give it a try (within reason).

This is great. I've been trying to decide on a cheap fabric to make a few kilts out of for blacksmithing and welding. Synthetics are a no no because they melt instead of burn, but wool is out of my price range for every day wear kilts. I was worried the duck canvas may not look right, but I guess if it's a more modern styled kilt it shouldn't matter anyway.

I used cotton/poly BDU woodland camo fabric for my first one, learned a lot. Almost done with my second one, acrylic wool, learning more. May have to buy real wool for the next one!
