Finally tests of mist filters from Jacques Crafford! Before your video, I watched a lot of videos about mist filters, but I never understood the effect. I really enjoy creating my own videos, thank you for sharing your experience bro 😇
What’s your opinion on using ND filters along with Phantom LUTs? Joel says they give off a color cast, and in my experience, he’s right. I get terrible purples instead of browns. But I’ve seen you praise Phantom LUTs, along with ND filters, so I’m curious if you just grade without a LUT when using ND.
The NiSi IR ND + CPL is the first and most expensive filter I use with my BMPCC and I love how it looks. I can't wait to be able to get the snap on filters. I imagine a IR VND and CPL combo would be a budget/upcoming cinematographer's best friend for shooting in the sun.
If you don't mind us chipping in on Jacques' behalf - The CPL will help with skin tones and reflections when shooting in the sun, but if you're shooting into the sun, then a black mist filter is your best friend to soften those highlights and give the footage a soft dreamy feel.
@@landscapegear9336 Yes, I am a fan of shooting in with the CPL IRND. I actually got it from your store a while back.😅 I can imagine stacking the CPL IRND + Black Pro Mist. I imagine I can reduce reflections to taste with CPL and soften the remaining with the Pro mist. I'll be visiting the store soon when my savings are fit enough.
Hey I love all your content, I’m super excited and motivated to be better every time I see your work. I wanted to ask, is a VND FILTER BETTER USED IN A MATTBOX STYLE OR A LENS STYLE? I ask because I feel like a get some vignetting effect when I use ND filters like K&F. Which one will give me that constant color and no color change. Thank you again.
Yes and No. I only have an A7sIII and FX6 but from time to time Sony gives me the FX3 if I ask for it. I love the FX3 more than the A7sIII but it's still pretty much the same camera so I don't feel like I have to buy it if I can get it from Sony and for bigger jobs I'll use the FX6?
By the way, I see in your videos that you are using Zeiss Distagon 35/1.4 which is pretty old and has some issues with focus breathing and aberrations. Can you please share your opinion why you use Zeiss over the Sony’s regular 35/1.8? I’m asking because I’m also bought the Zeiss and not the GM or 35/1.8. It just interesting why you prefer it :-)
Hi Jacques, I appreciate the work you're doing! I would like to ask a favour since Nisi themselves cant give me a straight answer. I would like to know what is the NiSi VND1-5 outer ring full diameter for 77mm filter, that is including knurled ring. Im asking coz i want to use this filter on the Tiltaing Mini matt-box and they state that; "The Mini Matte Box only supports circular filters with an outer diameter of 85mm or smaller." Much appreciate your time.
I would like to have VND (1-5 stops for video is enought?), 1/8 mist and polarizer. I have 77 mm lens, 67 mm and 72 mm in future. Should I go for Nisi 77 mm filters and use reduction?
What do you think about using nd pl or only nd filters for go pro one shoots fpv videos? Which will be more useful in situations where you are moving constantly?
This is a great review, I have followed up with most of your tutorials and I really do enjoy them, I simply want to know which filter will you recommend for a cinematic music video. Thank!
Thanks Eli! I think for a music video a 1/8 Mist is the safest. I won't use a streak filter unless I'm confident that the look will be consistent in all lighting setups so just a 1/8 mist is the winner.
The NISI Tru Color VND filter is advertized that it has "no color cast", is it really the case? I'm considering buying one. Looking forward to your reply.
Yes and No. There's a very small color change that's unavoidable by any filter but it's not a bad colour cast, it simply looks "different", in my opinion it's the most accurate filter out there!
Thank you so much! I think it's a combination of both technique and settings. On a 35mm the Active Steady on the A7sIII works really well, pair it with a subtle stabilise in post (Resolve) and generally the results are amazing.
Hi, your work is amazing. Thanks for sharing 😉 I can see you’re using the 35 mm zeiss. I’m going to buy a 35mm to paired with my sony a7iv. I love make photo and vidéo. Can you help me with pro and con between sony 35 zeiss and sony 35 GM ? Thanks a lot 😉
jacques, i have a question... did you expirience some vinneting at 24mm? using promist + VND? with the GM , cause in my case i use a sigma 24-70 and i experienced some vinneting using promist + VND
what are your thoughts on the amount of filters able to be stacked for cinematography. I have an IR and UV cut filter, IRND and a mist, could I use all of these together, and in which order would I stack them?
What do you think about Black Satin filters compared to Promist? I remember Matti H. mentioned that he uses it rather than a promist. Would love to hear your thoughts! I bought a black satin 1 to test out for a couple months.
Great video like always Mr. Jacques. One quick question. When you stack VND and Mist filter. Do you put the mist filter on top of the VND or viceversa. I put the mist filter first and then the ND. But not sure if its the right way. Also if you use a polarizer. what would be the proper order.
If you don't mind us chipping in on Jacques' behalf - NiSi officially stated that the filters can be combined in any order and it won't affect image quality in any way. FYI the True Colour polarizer is now available in Swift format.
I end up shooting a lot of video both vertically and horizontally. I'm curious to know if you still get the crappy color change when rotating the filter 90 degrees. I think it's generally unavoidable with VND's since polarized light tends to change color based on angle. Does the NiSi spin freely to allow you to shift the color based on your angle?
If you don't mind us chipping in on Jacques' behalf - The crappy colour you mention is probably a combination of cross-polarization and poor colour performance, which is common in lower-end VNDs that do not have a limited density range. Jacques covers it in-depth in a video he did for our channel. Link in second comment.
You will need specifically the Swift True Colour circular polarizer (not the standard screw-in version). It was only released in late December, so it isn't widely available yet.
Yes you can but I wouldn't recommend it, I think it will look messy. Swift is not front threaded so you would need to use a front threaded mist to add the streaks on top.
If you don't mind us chipping in - At this stage streak is only available as a standard filter and not swift, but it is in the development pipeline, so that you can combine it with other filters via the Swift system. As Jacques mentions, you might end up with some very funky results if you combine the two.
Bruh I think the 1/8 is not out yet. I prefer the 1/4 when I'm not dealing with intense highlights but in case of SWIFT the 4stop fixed ND makes the whole thing worth it!
It is a brand new product range, so you're unlikely to find it on sale. FYI NiSi always do a -15% sale during Black Friday week...that's probably the first time you'll see it on sale.
