The BEST format to render in Unreal Engine is 16-bit EXR sequences. I recommend DWAA or DWAB for small file sizes but if you have to do Cryptomattes and Multi-Layer Rendering, then I recommend PIZ. All other formats are dead to me and I hope this video explains why :)

A message to William if he ever reads this. Your tutorials are inspirational and I am grateful for your guidance. I made this one to not encrouch on your audience but instead answer some questions to a handful of colleagues who have asked me about the preference for rendering in AppleProRes. I also have found and received a few files from other artists where the workflow wasn't nailed down. I hoped to answer all of that here with a ton of technical stuff. Your content is 10/10 next level and I am grateful for your willingness to share your knowledge. In a recent video, I think you mentioned you started in 2008 in Unreal Engine and have done VFX on so many amazing things. You are a titan in our industry and I deeply respect you. Thank you and keep up all the great work.

A recent unreal engine update has included an ACES config file by default. You'll see it when creating an "OpenColorIO Configuration".

Thank you for working this out. For a long while now I have been having difficulty viewing exr renders in Davinci that look like the viewport or even how they open in Photoshop. I’m now looking at a colour pipeline that gives the best range in davinci with the ability to use the colourspace aware grading tools. Looking at straight linear renders, into Davinci which is colour managed. With CST nodes that take the footage from linear to Davinci Wide Gamut and then out to Rec709. The added bonus is that the footage looks pretty accurate in Fusion too.

I find my blue emissive materials look purple when outputting to rec709 bypassing the tone curve, but look blue when using aces in davinci, it makes it difficult to work with in unreal. With the tone curve active, they look a bright whitish blue, which seems more accurate. It's hard to know which approach to take. After playing around with it a bit, I think that outputting to rec709 in the viewport and in the render gives an accurate representation of what you see in UE when over in Davinci with loads of flexibility for grading compared to the standard UE tone curve, I did some testing and was shocked to see how little flexibility the default tone curve has in comparison when adjusting the shadows etc. I don't know anywhere near enough to feel confident in rendering out with ACES, things just look a little too different. Thanks for the video, it helped a lot, I'd overlooked the OCIO display settings for the viewport which is essential to getting things to match!

what about if your using image plates with footage. Say you shot on sony slog 3, how would you export your png seq for your image plate to use in ue5 and you want to use aces?
@JonJagsNee
@JonJagsNee 4 месяца назад
Interesting use case. I would honestly export as RGB and let unreal engines, color output, manage that

Hey Jon, this is a very interesting video for sure. Thank you very much, I learned a lot of interesting things, although there's one thing I don't understand - to me, the PIZ, ZIP, and DWAA/DWAB all produce the same file size. Did I forget something? I'm referring to what you mentioned around 1:10
@JonJagsNee
@JonJagsNee 7 месяцев назад
DWAA /DWAB should be roughly the same size 😊 piz and zip are less compressed but allow you to save things like Cryptomattes or other fancy tools. If you aren’t adding a cryptomatte pass to your render settings, it may be the same size. But I haven’t tested. As long as your renders look like what you need, you should be good to go
@DanielMagyar

@@JonJagsNee Thank you for the quick response. You helped, and I have the solution now. In my case, I used a simple EXR for all compressions in the test, and I didn't include extra layers that you mentioned. I just render a plain EXR. So, compressing doesn't make sense since every version contains the same data, only the RGB differs. Although Unreal Engine suggests that DWAA/DWAB is perfect if third-party software can read it more efficiently, so it's not a bad idea to consider.

practically speaking, would you ever work with all these transform nodes instead of changing the color science to ACEScct in the project settings?
@JonJagsNee
@JonJagsNee Год назад
You can totally do that! However, I am assuming that most people starting out in da Vinci want default settings 😊

Hi friend, thanks for this lesson, very useful for me. I am facing one problem, maybe you can help me. When I loaded the config.ocio file and in the Desired Color Spaces section I click on the down arrow to add Linear -sRGB and ACEScg I get an Invalid configuration file error. I have a project in UE5.

Yo man i found a solution but it's might be sounds like crazy. When i grab the config file to any specific folder instead of downloads folder it give that "invalid configuration file" error. But when i download it and keep it "downloads" file windows it works. It's crazy but try it.

DWAA describes itself as compressing the image but not compressing other layers, but if you use it with cryptomatte it compresses :/ very lame
