Another great comparison video Allan. I've been fitting & servicing Viessmann boilers for over 12 years. In excess of 200 units. Very few problems in that time if properly installed & systems properly cleansed. I've never replaced a gas valve or fan & only two boards (out of warranty). I replace rubber hoses (if fitted, can be cause of scaling on the inside of hose & ingress to plate H/Ex on combs causing variable domestic water temp) at 5-7 years if found to be 'crackly' when squeezed. These are the only thorn in the Viessmann's side IMHO. I've found replacement parts not to be expensive nor are additional flue components compared with other manufacturers across the board. As you showed here & on previous Viessmann strip downs, they are well designed for easy maintenance. Thanks again for showing the industry that the world doesn't end at Worcester....... Happy new year!

Thanks Allen. I am not an gas Engineer. But I am researching on which heat only boiler to get. I have zeroed in on Viessmann heat only boiler and this video has help me to decide on it . Among the heat only boiler which I need, only Viessmann compact boiler seem to have the circular radial heat exchanger, with all others in this category having aluminium exchanger with top burner. It made sense to me to have burner in the centre rather than at the top. One thing I am not able to find is gas consumption comparison between different boilers i.e. gas consumption for heating a particular sized room within standardised parameters as to which boiler would heat up a room with less gas ( and less money to pay😁) (like all the cars being sold with miles per gallon fuel data to compare). I have been watching your videos on boiler comparison and I see you as a effective communicator and a good Teacher 👏.
@timhancock6626
@timhancock6626 3 года назад
Top down burner is actually a very good idea as it stays very clean and no dirt settles on it, so it stays efficient. When you service top down burners you hardly find any blockages and they just need a brush over with a soft paint brush. All the boilers meet government efficiency standards so there is little point in comparing them. The biggest difference in gas usage depends entirely on the habits of the user, the effectiveness of insulation in the property being heated, plus efficient controls on the boiler and heating system.
@manojsekharan5846
@manojsekharan5846 3 года назад
@@timhancock6626 : Perhaps my bad luck with top down burner in Ideal Icos HE 24 heat only boiler is making me to come to a negative conclusion about them. I had it serviced yearly( eon, heat serve etc) for 13 years. At the bottom of the heat exchanger, the ash (+ condensation) has hardened up between the fins and the engineer is not able to remove it. Now it is almost preventing the ash to fall down where it can’t be vacuumed. Regarding efficiency, yes all the boilers are efficient in burning up all the gas which reaches the burner, but how much gas does the boiler use up to heat up a ‘standardised’ room?

@@manojsekharan5846 it sets like concrete in the sump of the ISAR/ICOS, but nothing a hammer and long flat blade screwdriver shouldn't be able to handle. Brush and hover out through sump cover plate Then wash down from above, leave overnight with boiler off to let the moisture loosen any crud. Rod through with cleaning blade. I've never seen the fins block on these boilers, only the sump. Bit of work, but normally works. Most of the issues with those boilers due to lack of, or poor servicing. Look after the boiler, it'll look after you. Get Allen round 😉

Best Boiler full stop is the Glow Worm Energy or Vaillant ecoTEC Pure, there almost identical, Both have alloy heat exchangers, full self diagnostics, 30minutes to fully strip down and 45 minutes to rebuild and working and that's the Combi, you can remove the plate heat exchanger in 5 minutes, every part is simple to access. has the best controls package that no other manufacture can compete with. light weight. Very small and compact. Rear flue within case dimensions. very very reliable. works from 3kw to a high output good for weather comp. water temp to UFH can be controlled with out a mixing pump and valve at say 40 deg, hot water call will make boiler run up to 70 or as set temp for cylinder. Its just a vast interchangeable system built around a very good boiler. far better dare I say than the stainless steel boilers that if not kept free of iron oxide would cause problems.

The baxi looks like a right faff about. Electronics hate being hot as a general rule, so that also works against the baxi. Looks like they’ve crammed too much in too small a space. We all get caught out by having to disconnect pcbs, which don’t work when put back together! Normally a Friday! Needs to be the Viessmann I think. I serviced my first Baxi heat only (that same model) only three months ago and honestly thought it was simple, but over complicated if that makes any sense? It seemed they made it to be easy to service, and yet made a few boo boo’s. Some of it, like the flue connector seemed a tad cheap in my opinion. I too was unsure about disconnecting the PCB every year. I suppose that only time will tell with that. I have not test seen a Viessmann heat only down this neck of the woods, so cannot comment on them although I do like stainless steel heat exchangers and like it that they have a manual vent to clear the coil of air. Hi Alan great video once again. Dont you think we may be overcomplicating gas boilers these days?. I totally understand the need for energy efficiency on appliances and value for money and carbon footprint etc. I have a property which I installed a glow worm space saver mk2 in, in 1986 I'm sure you'll remember it. Its connected to a vented pre lagged cylinder with a standard y plan set up. Apart from 3 thermocouples, 1 gas valve and totally descaling the cast iron heat ex 2 years ago, it's been absolutely brilliant and still going strong and quiet as a mouse. I keep it well serviced and there is a magnacleanse on the system and I'd like to say its totally inefficient and a gas guzzler but it isnt. In that time I've renewed up to 3 boilers in other properties I've worked in over the years, just an observation mate👍

As a comparison in this instance I’d go for the Viessmann, I’m not a big fan of Viessmann, but it looks a better boiler. The general thoughts on aluminium v SS heat exchangers; if you use On/Off controls you’d be OK with aluminium, but for OT or communication controls use a SS Heat exchanger..

Fibre Washer.I don't follow your logic with why you'd prefer a S Steel heat exchanger. The only positive of an S Steel is longevity vs Aluminium. In terms of efficiency aluminium wins as you can achieve a complex casting with far greater surface area than S Steel and aluminium conducts heat more quickly and efficiently than SS does. Given the short life spans of all modern boilers the longevity issue is less crucial. My last aluminium heat exchanger was still going after 25 years, though it hadn't that long to go. What kills boilers is cost of repair and reluctance of engineers to attempt a repair. Its easier and sometimes cheaper to stick in a new one with a long guarantee. I've seen enough newish looking easy to fix boilers at the scrappers to know what goes on. On a fixed price repair, Worcester Bosch will leave you with an effectively renewed boiler for £300. Is that unfair competition when the parts alone might cost an engineer that much ? Hmmm..I have mixed feeling on fixed price repairs personally.

@@timhancock6626 Ah Tim, in your statement you’ve conceded to two things; the short life span of aluminium & how High spares prices lead to uneconomic boiler repairs. Mate, I agree with you, aluminium is much better at transferring heat than SS. However, the constant 24/7 operation on OT controls is detrimental to aluminium. Far better on short periods of operation. I’m a big fan of aluminium, I generally fit Vokera boilers & their budget boilers are excellent value for money. Fitted on simple On/Off controls, they give countless years of service, know what?? I’ve never, ever, replaced a Vokera boiler heat exchanger. Stainless might be your choice, and it wouldn't be a bad choice, but then neither would the Baxi as aluminium is more efficient at heat transfer than stainless. Good video. Just wanted to ask about whether the Wiessmann (including the new model that supersedes it) has a timer on the control panel. My old Myson Orion which I'm looking to replace has an analogue timer so with these newer boilers if they don't have timers then aren't they switched on all the time - if so, do they operate in a very low power mode so hardly any fuel is being used?

Knuckle bends welded on at the flow and return connections all give rise to slow flow, scale and hot spots. Ali conducts better but needs more thorough servicing, unecessary mass to be heated along with the system water. Ridiculous pricing on gas valve and fan. @@timhancock6626 Tim, I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the use of these parts. Failure of Worcester flexible gas pipes hasn't resulted in incidents as far as I know. Otherwise there would be an urgent remedial work programme. The Worcesters, as you know, have zero governor gas valves. So any significant failure in gas line after valve or restrictions in flueway or fan/ignition problems, will cause an ignition fault, closing the gas valve. These boilers are negative pressure, so any leaking gas would be sucked back into combustion train. Under atmospheric pressure, as long as case has been sealed correctly; any gas discharged into case from passing gas valve would be discharged to outside air. The risks are minimal from using these parts in their current application.

@@darrencahill5159 I think the failure rate of plastic components on Worcester Bosch boilers in general is hardly confidence building. Also, how many ideal Logic sumps have failed ? At least Ideal acknowledged the fault and modified the component. I've never seen similar from WB. The gas carrying parts crack across the corner of the elbow. They can certainly leak and they don't shutdown as you claim otherwise they wouold be discovered before a routine service, which is where they crop up on boilers ten years old or more from time to time. Having gas anywhere it shouldn't be is a significant risk I would suggest. Try your argument on your next friendly Gas Safe inspection...then stand well back 😉
