Best Helmet? - Shoei NXR Helmet Review: A few months ago I posted a review of my ageing Shoei Qwest helmet, my favourite lid of the last seven years. Shoei NXR in the EU = RF-1200 in the US. It's been my helmet since 2016 and it's a winner on my naked bike - a '13 Triumph Street Triple R. I love this helmet, I have the transitions visor in with the pinlock most all the time. Top quality, works in all weather and conditions. Would not trade it for the world.

Must check that transitions visor out, I'm hearing a lot about it!

Scott Peterson thanks for this, all the reviews I’ve read are for the rf 1200 yet I couldn’t find one on any (Australian) website . But..plenty of the NXR - I’m looking at one of these or the Kabuto 33

I've had an NXR for several months now and have really grown to like it. I wasn't able to 'test run' the lid like so many others probably, so it was left to comfort in the shop and once purchased and used on the road no returning. I also have the Shoei photochromatic visor which retails for nearly £200 but can actually be had for under £110 on Amazon, it's a great visor and changes pretty quick (a lot I know but since there's no drop down inner visor I think it's handy to save faffing about changing visors as the sun goes down)!

Very nice looking helmet. See your a bit of a collector of helmets . like me. The fox with be number 5. Bought two open face helmets last summer, because of the heat. But never really felt safe in them, plus bugs hurt when they hit your face. So the fox hopefully will be better .Watched your adventure helmet review, so lookis like i,ve made the right choice. As mx helmets are very similar and it's gold stamped.

Just bought an NXR Parameter TC-3 today. It fits me really well. In an XL, and my headshape is long and narrow with a narrow forehead. The BSB GP2 rider who I bought it off at his store. Wears Shoei's and they fit him perfectly to. Even though his head is completely round and a lot wider side to side than mine, he wears a large

Hi TMF, the one feature that I now always look for in a crash helmet is the built in sun visor. Comfort and fit comes first, built in sun visor second, colour third. Living in Malaysia we are very close to the equator and get quite a lot of sun, nearly 12 hours of daylight all year round. The convenience of instant sun visor protection is great, flip down, flip up is great. It makes the helmet great in hot weather (which we get a lot of here) as you can flip down the sun visor, flip up the main visor and get great ventilation through the helmet and still have eye protection. I have an AGV K3S and shoei both with sun visors, the shoei is the more comfortable of the two. The other thing I look for is the chin strap fastening, I prefer the two D ring method and thing it's more secure over the push and lock ratchet arrangement. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I feel safer with the D rings.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 6 лет назад
Yeah I agree on the D rings - the sun visors aren't always good if you're a glasses wearer (like me) for riding though....

hi tmf I replaced my very old AGV last summer with the NXR and yes it's a great helmet. The only slight thing I find with it is when I take it off I find it pulls my ears slightly but that could be that I have a cardo Bluetooth fitted to it . Loving your channel keep up the great work . Thank bjt

I've been using one of these (in the Dunlop colour scheme) for 3 years as both a day to day helmet and track days, and it's been one of the comfiest lids I've owned in 30 years. It's wearing well inside and out, and I'd buy another if I damaged this one

I replaced my hjcrpha 10 after numerous visor locking mechanisms snapping with the nxr and have to say I'm pretty happy. I still think the hjc was comfier and if it wasn't for the visors would pick a hjc again but the nxr feels solid and is still comfy. All round it's a great lid.

One solution to the tinted visor issue is to buy a helmet with a drop down sun visor. Any helmet sold without one cannot really be called a sport-touring helmet in this day and age . They are a real safety consideration, ability to have a dark but legal visor on sunny days and to be able to remove it in an instant when in a tunnel, days becoming gloomy etc.

My cousin has the Shoei NXR with the chromatic visor. It really works well and the helmet looks sleek. However, I have an Arai head and those Shoeis don't fit me at all. My Arai Rebel fits me like a glove and I'm loving it. What I just want to note is that a 'best' helmet depends on one's fitment. Both Arai and Shoei are great helmets. Thanks for the review.

TheMissendenFlyer Yep I know. Saw your review of the Rebel. Maybe I have a more rounded shape head. The Shoeis are tight around my temples. Very uncomfy.... I have size 'S' Rebel and is very snug and comfy. I can wear a Shoei, but then it's too big.

Nice review, but I already have 5 helmets, none of which are "multi role helmets". For those on a budget, the Scorpion AT950 is a jack of all trades, yet quiet and well constructed helmet (removable sun peak, drop down internal visor, flip up chin bar, quick remove visor for use of goggles, good ventilation). Unfortunately, there is no Sharp rating yet, but I am staggered at how few riders/vloggers have tested this helmet given it's adaptability and value for money. How about it, TMF?
@greyrock551

I have a GT Air which I bought as my first helmet meaning for it to be an all-rounder. The quality of it is tremendous, and it feels like a real luxury item to put on. This is probably how Shoei convince a lot of people in the showroom. But I regret buying it and ended up buying two other helmets after a lot of research - neither being Shoei's. The first reason to get other helmets was that I (later) found the GT Air only scores 3 SHARP stars, which at the price is frankly unacceptable. In my view, you take a full-face helmet because (you assume) it's the safest option, rather than the most practical one. The NXR does better at 4 stars, but in my logic a full-face should always be a 5-star (there is a long list of full face helmets with this score). On a side-note, one helmet I was glad I researched before buying was the HJC RPHA-11, which looks brilliant value but is also 3 stars (it's left-side impact score in particular is atrocious - see sharp.dft.gov.uk). The second reason is that I simply find that specialized helmets make more sense - horses for courses. So now I have a brilliant commuting/touring helmet and a top-notch sports/racing helmet next to that. For touring I got a Shark Evo-One II. Every bit as comfortable, sun-visored, and transforms into a certified jet helmet in 2 seconds. It gets four stars but there are no modular/system helmets with 5 stars and 100% latch score (100% latch is a must as it means the helmet should never open in a crash). For sport/fun and track, there's an AGV Veloce S. Full top score 5 stars, much sportier looks (than GT Air or NXR) and a fit that makes you realize what the difference is when you get a race-derived lid. It can vent a ton of air too, and while it has no sun-visor you can wear sunglasses in it, or swap the (very thick but optically correct) visor in literally 10 seconds. You could go Corsa R or (if loaded) Pista, but the spoilers on those looked a bit silly to me.

I love the shoei helmets and l have owned all the xr series...the xr900 was fantastic..sadly my head don't fitt shoei so good anymore..to bad i found that out after buying a GT-AIR last year..so now lm on Xlite..but the time i used it the GT are awsome in the matter of qualiy and my wife absolut love hers.. The GT Air doesn't fit like a traditional Shoei which is probably why you found it a problem. Shoei's normally fit me perfectly but I found the GT Air pinched the sides of my head badly, something to do with fitting in the sun visor I would think. The NXR was perfect and that's what I now have.

Ha! I did exactly the same thing. Replaced a QWEST with the NXR. I have two. I've toured all over the IoM and the UK with my very tasteful bright yellow one. The visor system is great - MUCH better than the fiddly Arai alternative, and the liner feels nice and plush. The eye port is also nice and large as well.

Lovely helmet, Shoei has always been my preferred full face. If it says illegal for road use on the visor could there be a problem with the law and your insurance in the case of an accident?(worth asking Principle.)They do tinted visors for daytime use and it is legal to wear sunglasses.

Hi TMF, Absolutely love the channel keep up the good work, but with all the miles you ride I can not believe you would be happy with a lower safety grade helmet. If this helmet only scored 4 stars it means that it failed in some respect so it couldn't make 5 star standard. It does seem to be ACU gold so must be quite good, but for me I would want only the best I can get/afford.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 6 лет назад
Well it's a matter of personal choice of course - I'm not sure the government Sharp tests are definitive and I reckon Shoei know how to make a helmet by now, so I'm happy to go with 4 stars personally but take your point....

These will be my go-to helmet when I start riding. They're called the RF-1200 here in the US, though. Not sure why companies have multiple model names for the same product in different parts of the world, e.g. the FZ-07/MT-07.

Looks like a good helmet, probably all Shoei Helmets are pretty good.... I have a Shoei GT Air helmet as well as the Schuberth C3, understandably two different helmets, but I tend to ride with the Shoei far more often than the Schuberth. Primarily because the the visor on the Shoei will stay in multiple positions while riding whereas the Schuberth will not. Now for the question”?”, why is it illegal to ride with a smoked visor in the UK? Or is it jus that you can’t ride with it at night? If the latter it is the same as here in the States, if the former, then the UK has a stupid rule and it should be lobbied against. In any case really like the videos enjoy your volgs.
@TheMissendenFlyer

@splodge5714
@splodge5714 6 лет назад
The Biker Bug I believe the UK law states a visor should transmit at least 50% of available light. Tinted visors are fine and will have 'for daytime use only' on them. Dark/Black visors will have 'Illegal for road use' on them. If you are in an accident,someone steps out and you hit them, a problem may arise with the law wearing an illegal visor. Your insurance may also be invalidated. If you're happy to take the risk wear a black visor, me I'll stick to a tinted one. I can always put on my sunglasses! lol.

When I replaced my old Shoei X-Spirit, I tried on both the NXR and the GT-Air. Both fitted me very well, but for me the GT-Air was a better helmet. Not only does it have all the features of the NXR, but it has a drop-down sun visor, and it has a dedicated Bluetooth comms unit: the Sena 10U. This comms unit fits inside the helmet without any external gubbins, and connects to both my smart phone (for music on the go) and TomTom sat nav. And at £360 it was far cheaper than the NXR. QED. BTW, Shoei is still pronounced SHOH-AY.

Always used Shoei and never had a problem but saw a deal from Holland on a Schuberth, so gave it a try. It’s not bad but in hindsight, and in my humble opinion, not as good as a Shoei. I can’t fault the supplier from Holland, easy to deal with, very professional and a great price at $400 with free shipping but the fit and finish is nowhere near what you would expect given the normal price for one of these. And yes it is legit and now registered on Schuberths website. On a side note, I don’t miss the weather you’re having TMF, mid 80’s here today 😂

Do you have any good tips of what to do to prevent glaces fogging up?. Especially in winter when I where a scarf around my neck partially covering my mouth. I have tried some anti fog spay but doesn't seam to do any except for a week also. Good video, keep up the good work
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 6 лет назад
Remove any chin curtain and breath guard, use a pinlock and if necessary apply shaving foam to your glasses (obviously wipe it off) to give them an anti-fogging layer...
@christopherlamb9838

All of that, plus be very careful that you don't push your specs up onto your forehead, or down over your nose while putting your helmet on; either leads to instant fogging.

I Have this helmet and I love it. I use a photochromatic visor. Tinted visors not being road legal is stupid. The way i see it is if im riding along and my visor is too dark I can flip it up or I can wait for it to lighten (happens quite quickly and the tint has never been an issue) but if I was to wear sunglasses, which are legal, its not like I can take them off. Obviously wearing tinted at night would not be smart.

Buying a new helmet can be an expensive nightmare, had my Arai Chaser V for years, comfortable ( for me ) quiet, but a few issues, mainly the visor mounting system. Well past its sell by date so replaced it with a Schuberth. What a mistake! Felt comfortable in the shop but after an hour or so it is an instrument of torture. Schuberth claim to test their helmets in a wind tunnel, and I believe them. It would help if the wind tunnel was running when they test them! The noisest lid I've ever owned. Ah well, have to start saving for another Aria. My advice, if you have a lid that you like, stick with that brand.

I wear Oakleys for that very reason. Close-fitting, straight arms slide into the helmet easier for me. Expensive though! For some reason I find my Shoei pushes my glasses to the wrong angle whereas my Arais don't. So choice of helmet and glasses together is important. It's a bloody minefield.

While the 'rule' seems to be that a helmet has to be changed every 5 years or so (handy for the manufacturer to have this obsolescence), I'd love there to be a long term test to see whether different helmets have different lifetimes after that arbitrary time. Could it really be for example that a cheap lid that barely gets a BS kite mark really can be compared say to a carbon fibre one in this respect? Anyhow, I look forward to you destructively testing the old Quest in the cause of science with a large pien hammer to see what happens...

I had to give up Arai helmets because of the difficulty of removing the face shields. I neither mastered the secret sequence nor could I grow the much needed third thumb. Plus, the cost of the Arai shields are nuts. But don’t get me wrong, Arai makes a superb helmet - they’re just not for me, anymore. Given that, I remain concerned about face shield removal and cost. With respect to removal and cost, what’s your thoughts about the Shoei shields?

Hi TMF I thought as I am considering getting a Shoei NXR I should try and get some feedback from a valued source like yourself who has had experience riding with one. I could ask loads of questions but I shall restrict myself to two- firstly I see you have opted for a dark smoke visor - have you had any experience from the Police re its level of tint and do you ride with a clear visor as others have said they do, my second question is on trying one on I found I got the chipmunk face as you would hope from the internal pads hugging my cheeks and a firm but positive pressure on my forehead but I found that the pressure from the pads on the side of my head was less than I have on other helmets - do you have this experience I only ask as I wonder if it the shape of my head or helmet - my main helmet is a Shoei Neotec 2. Please can you let me know. Thank you for your feedback. An avid follower of your channel for over 3 years regards Carl

Hi, great video, I'm trying to decide what helmet should I pick for my street triple R, between this one and the Rpha 11, I tried them both and they fit well, I prefer the looks, the field of vision and the price of the HJC, but the premium feel and the 4 stars of the Shoei (I think it's quieter too) , you had both, how do you compare them?
