Doc, you should look at adding an interlock switch on your electrical panel. It’s a happy compromise between a high dollar transfer switch and hassles of running extension cables. Got an electrician to add one to my house in another month. FYI love my champion dual fuel inverter generator!
@rstephe
@rstephe 6 лет назад
Glad to see others talking Interlocks instead of costly and limiting transfer switches. If doc were feeding his panel I would agree. However, in this case he is running cords so there is no need. He runs a cord directly to the appliance he wants to power. I run a 12.5K watt Generac and run everything including AC so for that I have an external plug box with an interlock on my circuit panel to ensure as I power the panel to power all lines in the house no power back feeds to the grid.

One technical problem I've been thinking about is how to best connect a generator to a house, safely and affordably. It's surprisingly tricky. It's often either: safe OR affordable, but generally not both. Maybe with some thought and planning we could find ways to make it BOTH safe and affordable. The "interlock kits" might achieve this, but I've found it's surprisingly difficult to figure out: 1) whether they are legal in your state, 2) whether it is "listed" by an acceptable testing agency (like "UL"), and 3) which one to buy to fit your circuit panel and breakers, and 4) If the right one isn't available, what's your best recourse. A lot of people ghetto-hack it to backfeed a dryer outlet, which is somewhere between clever and dangerous. It does seem like it's the cheapest. If budget-considerations cause someone to do this, here's a way it might be made more safe and possibly made more legal. Either: 1) Install a cam lock on the circuit breaker panel (aka "load center"), or 2) Get a "lockout device" (not to be confused with an "interlock kit"), that goes over the main breaker and allows you to put a padlock on it to lock it in the off position for the duration of the "manual transfer" to generator power. I'm not a licensed electrician but AFAIK the code makes an exception to permit a "temporary" "manual transfer" with the use of a proper lockout device and installation. I'm not sure about all the details. These devices might have to be made of steel and/or be UL listed, yet unfortunately, most of the available products that take a padlock seem to contain plastic, so as I said I'm not sure about all those details. I guess there's a fine line between on the one hand: 1) offering advice to help people more safely and inexpensively hookup a generator to get emergency power using a "lockout device" in order to avoid an expensive ($1000?) professional installation, versus, on the other hand: 2) encouraging people to cut corners with a cheaper method that isn't as safe, instead of using a safer, more permanent "interlock kit" or "transfer switch" installation. I figure if people are going to ghetto wire it, especially in an emergency, you can't exactly stop them, so it might be better to help them do it more safely. The temporary solution to this might be a "lockout" device. A more permanent solution might be an "interlock". I'm of the opinion that maybe circuit panels should come with an interlock as standard equipment, but I'm not an electrician or a power engineer so I could be wrong. I do know that it's quite a hassle trying to purchase and retrofit an aftermarket one, so a lot of people won't do that because of the time required and difficulty of doing it. They'll just wire up the so called "suicide cord" or "widow maker" to connect through a dryer outlet or some other outlet.

People up north might need to include their furnace for long winter outages. Sub-zero temperatures can have a bad effect on water pipes if there's no heat. Here in Pittsburgh I can recall one outage of about a week after a winter storm.

In the San Francisco East Bay every single house on my street has central heating with natural gas furnace. No 120 volts, no heat. We lost power yesterday for a bit. It got down to 38 degrees F last night so heat is welcome. My Honda 2000 Inverter generator runs the furnace easily and can't be heard in the house. I tried it during a 12 hour outage one year.

This is great .. I did exactly what you recommend prior to purchasing my two inverter generators .. I listed what I need, what would be nice .. and then culled the list to the essentials with some realistic comforts. My goal was to plan for a minimum of nine days without power, a realistic plan and then decided I need frugal, quiet and pure sine wave power for .. refrigerator, lights, a fan, modem and router, electronics charging capability .. and if possible a tiny 600 watt microwave and a small 900 watt induction hotplate. Being able to run a small TV and DVD player was a bonus. I found that with proper staggering of appliances .. all of these could be powered by around 2000 watts using less than 2 gallons of fuel per day. I have the Ryobi 2300 bluetooth inverter and the Generac GP2200i .. I keep 20 gallons of stabilized ethanol-free fuel on hand .. we recently had a 36 hour outage and my system was enough, the small fridge freezer combo runs at just over 100 watts with a starting surge of just under 800 watts and was actually absorbed well with the generator on eco-mode with all the other small draw items running .. the generator surged when it started each cycle but there was no delay or hesitation on the refrigerator motor and no flicker of lights .. when using the microwave or hotplate I momentarily disconnect the fridge ... thanks for posting this informative video ... Cheers

Hi Doc remind everyone to ground the frame of the generator to prevent electrocution!! The genset can short to the frame and still run and when the home owner touch's the frame they become the path to ground!!
@LeviAllen

You don't understand how generators work.
@jeffhoward9186
@jeffhoward9186 6 лет назад
You do not need to ground the generator if connected to a structural that is already grounded, i.e. a house, apartment or trailer that has electricity already installed. If recreational vehicle then you will need to ground the generator, if not attached to shore electrical.
@mlke4258
@mlke4258 6 лет назад
Levi Allen It depends on how they are hooked up. If you have them legitimately connected via the 240 turn lock plug to your panel via either a interlock, or transfer switch- then the ground would be referenced back at your panel through the turn-lock connector. In this scenario You would not actually want to ground it as you might possibly create a ground loop. A ground loop is basically where you make everything a path to ground. You want the path to ground to be isolated. That's why the neutral, and ground can only be bonded at the main panel. If you are doing the extension cord running everywhere routine- then it is what is called a floating neutral. There is no actual ground reference. In that type of application Harold would be correct. If there was a fault- someone could easily be referenced to ground, and be shocked. Albeit- It would have to be a timing thing. Those volt regs in them little household units are not made to handle significant voltage irregularities. If a breaker on the gennie didn't pop- The volt reg would literally let the magic smoke out so fast, it would stop producing power either way.. Read the manuals. Source information online. It's all there- you just have to dig around for it...
@rstephe
@rstephe 6 лет назад
If you do not plug the generator power cord to a grounded source you should connect a separate ground. It is optional but if the gen grounds to the frame you are going to wish you did. Mike C explained it well. Maybe Levi doesn't know how a generator works, or at least not how a ground functions if the unit is not grounded.
@mikeguitar9769
@mikeguitar9769 6 лет назад
I'm an electronics engineer, and I gave some thought to the grounding-issue, but I haven't researched it so I could be wrong and just talking out my %&^#, sorry about that, so please take this with a grain of salt. The main thing to remember in general is to not combine water with high-voltage electricity, because if you have wet hands and/or feet in particular, (or the generator is wet and you grab it) this creates a low resistance path through your body. It basically makes all the difference between a mild harmless shock and a possibly very dangerous shock. Of course this isn't always possible because to prevent carbon monoxide indoors, generators are supposed to be used outdoors and often in stormy conditions. Also they don't seem to use "GFCI" ground-fault protection, as are used now on any outlet in your home near water (e.g. bathroom, kitchen, and by a laundry sink). Also the metal case may or may not be connected in various ways to earth-ground and/or neutral, at one or more points, and you might not even know which one it is or if it changes. So there are potentially many different kinds of faults that could occur. From a safety point of view it's surprising that it's so common and so easy for a generator to be potentially unsafe. This is an issue that might need some consideration, because it isn't so obvious, nor easy to simplify, so this makes me think that design work is needed to make it more intuitive/automated and more fail-safe. Generators aren't like other outdoor equipment. If you're using a power tool outside with a 3-prong cord then it's relatively safe to assume it's grounded because the same extension cord that delivers 120 volts also makes the ground connection. A generator isn't like that, because it basically generates its own voltage regardless of what ground-wire is or isn't connected to. So it's riskier to assume it's safely grounded, because the power cord containing the grounding wire could be disconnected or intermittent somewhere and you wouldn't know. Sooner or later generators will probably be on a GFCI, and/or have other safety features, but who knows when we'll all get around to doing that... There's probably a way to (inexpensively) put some kind of safety-indicator light on the generator to indicate whether the generator frame is grounded or not before the user potentially grabs onto it with wet hands (especially while standing on wet ground with wet feet), but I'd have to give a bit of thought as to how that might best be done. One way might be for a circuit to automatically measure the resistance between the ground connection and another conductor like the neutral (assuming they aren't hard-wired at the generator). If a test circuit is able to pass a test current along the ground wire, say no more than a small number of milliamps (with an appropriate duty-cycle and frequency), and the voltage between the neutral and ground remains low, say some small number of volts (particularly if measured at the same gating-time or frequency as the test signal), then by ohm's law the ratio of voltage to current is a measure of resistance or impedance, and if this measured resistance is below some threshold, then hopefully this might be a more reliable indication that the generator has a good connection to earth-ground, say less than 1 kohm, which I'd guess has a lower probability of being an open-circuit. From what I gather it's considered good practice to run the generator for a few minutes before connecting the load to it. However, depending on how it's done, there's a risk the generator would be generating a voltage yet be un-grounded during that time. This suggests that the extension cord / power cable containing the ground wire ought to be connected back to the earth-ground connection before starting the generator. But this requires that the load be switched with either a back-fed circuit breaker or a transfer switch, instead of using the plug & socket connection to connect and disconnect the load. I've noticed that in many cases, during the generator startup and shutdown procedure, it can be important for safety that the operator completes all of the steps in the procedure and in the correct order. It's a very good idea to have this procedure written down, (perhaps even in checklist form or with some other indicator as to which step they're on), so that the procedure need-not be recalled from memory without error to be safe, and so that the procedure is easy to follow even in conditions where a person might be hurried, stressed, tired or sleep-deprived, etc. To the issue of ground-loops, there are all sorts of ways that might occur. This makes me wonder if it's even safe to have an exposed metal case on the top and sides where a user might touch it, because regardless of how it's connected there could be unsafe current paths. Assuming that the chassis is going to be made of electrically conductive material like steel, and that this is going to be "grounded", or attempted to be "grounded", then this suggests that maybe that conductive chassis shouldn't be exposed to where a user could so easily contact it, because it isn't reliably known for all circumstances where the conduction paths are.

I would vote for the Champion dual-fuel. No mods required, out of the box works on gasoline or propane. More fuel options means better chance for fuel in an emergency and you can store a modestly big propane tank (40-100lb tank is still possible to transport for refill withput much trouble) for long periods of time without it going bad like gasoline. And dual fuel means if you run out of propane you can always use gas from a lawnmower.

A good generator, requires good maintenance. ! If u are going to buy a genset, learn to do the maintenance. Champion is a good gener8or and has a GREAT customer support team! I deal with them at times, buying parts to fix generators. With a gen, take wheels off! YUP and keep dolly or kart to move from garage to where u want it when using it. This is a good security measure. Always keep enough oil on hand. when Irma came thru, I ran it 16 hrs a day. I changed the oil every 32 hrs and always had a few foam air cleners ready for service and spark plugs too.

Great info on sizing, etc. I think though that I'd put more emphasis on fuel. As you noted, gasoline can be hard to get before a storm, and go quickly during and after the storm. You do have info about using a dual-fuel generator with a typical 20lb propane tank (a little over 4 and a half gallons of liquid fuel) to run the generator, and that's great as propane never goes bad. But one 20lb / 4.5 gallon tank will still only carry you about a day of running. I think it's important to also have a way of hooking the generator to a larger source of fuel. If you're rural and have a big propane tank for the home, connect to that, or if you're in an area that has natural gas, then hook to that. Having a substantial and consistent source of fuel is probably one of the biggest headaches of any generator.

Absolutely excellent video. Just got through three day outage here after flooding and eight to eleven inches of rain ... alternating between Generac GP2200i and Ryobi RYI2300bta. I also use individual cables and prefer this over whole house hookup with transfer switch. I just like the flexibility of using cords. As each day passes, I watch the wind and I do try and set my units downwind from structures to reduce any exhaust drift towards buildings. I have a sheltered running location available .. if absolutely needed .. but if weather permits, keep them running in a far downwind open area outside. Running 10 gauge 100' of Yellow Jacket cable (almost the diameter of a garden hose) into house and splitting three ways with quality 12 gauge splitter to 12 gauge 25' to fridge/freezer and induction hotplate for cooking. Other feeds were 14 gauge to LED house lighting, scanner radio and electronics laptop and phone charging. Third 14 gauge line to TV and running fiber optic modem and router. Also ran a couple of fans here and there. I have a small 6000btu portable window venting AC unit to be used as needed for one room as "refuge of last resort" .. only if needed. Can be powered by Ryobi. I do need inverter power for all my sensitive things .. and usually alternate these units between gas fills and oil changes as needed. One last thing I have discovered is to use wireless thermometer in freezer and fridge .. so I can occasionally turn off power to this until the refrigerator once again needs running as internal temp rises to just under forty degrees. I keep two 42,000mah Power Banks charged and ready to run TV, modem and laptop during initial moments of power outage as I check utility website to see if I need to set up generators. If outage appears short term under four hours .. I stay with power banks .. if it appears long term .. I use the next couple of hours to set up. Our refrig is ok for several hours. The efficient refrigerator here takes about 750 or slightly more watts for initial motor surge ... and then settles down running just under 100 watts .. around 99. I also have a couple of 55 gallon ploy blue rain barrels for flushing toilets .. enough for seven-nine days. I also keep nine days of bottled water in storage rotating occasionally. Our well and pressure tank is 220 volts and 540 ft deep so I just assume that will stay off during any outage .. and plan accordingly. My back up heat source is a wood supply and radiant stove .. also have 1200 watt heaters if needed but wood stove with radiant rising heat in basement is really enough. My generator gas storage supply is usually about ten to fifteen gallons of stabilized ethanol-free fuel which I also occasionally alternate to keep fresh. Enough for more than a few days running mostly eco-mode except if fridge or induction hotplate needs full power mode. I also recently bought a tiny 600watt microwave to use for cooking. The smallest manual model I could find. It runs well, as does the 900-1200 watt induction surface .. with Ryobi 2300. I do keep fuel in my generators during storage .. full tanks .. just as I do with my snow removal equipment .. I run each of them monthly and keep the ethanol free gas treated for stability. Two or three times each year I siphon fuel out and put in all new stabilized with no ethanol .. running it frequently. I have given up on storing equipment with empty tanks between seasons or uses as I do believe it's best for system to keep fueled up with fresh full tanks. Thanks for great video .. Cheers.

Ran that during the last hurricane for 4 days.. and bought the other from Sams for $299.00 the 4100 Dual fuel model. could not resist for the price.. Not as quite as my other but still a good cheap backup or to loan out..

Good subject matter. I bought my generac 8000 3 years ago. Need it for the first time this year when a march snow storm took out the power for a few days. I bought it just for the winter so i can keep furance riunning. I had the proper lock out kit install so i can run my whole house from the main fuse panel. I just want to add that you want to do your research base on your own needs and talk to your local experts to get the proper equipment for your situation. Thanks Mike

YES! Another successful generator story. I fear power outages due to hurricanes and heavy storms here in FL but I think winter storms taking out the ability to heat is an even scarier situation.

The bigger concern with generators that a lot of people don't think about is the quality of electricity that it produces. This is my main issue with these cheaper generators. When I need to have back up electricity I want the same quality that the power company supplies, the cheaper ones don't deliver that. The sine wave that they produce is harmful to laptops, TV's, routers, while the cheaper generators do produce power it is better suited for the construction job site, where all it has to power is power tools.

ALL generators, regardless of price can produce spikes, surges, etc. Even home outlets can do it. That's why we posted up and run CONDITIONERS. www.howtowithdoc.com/best-home-generators-hurricane-prep/

I have found that once you figure how many watts you need double the size for the generator. I have 2 a 5500 running watt and a Generac 17500 E that we use when we need to do laundry, dishes, baths, air conditioners and so on. On a side note, we are total electric. One time few years ago we were without power for 14 days cost a fortune but we had electric

Thanks for sharing another nugget of information. So you need to set it up outside for exhaust purposes, right? I don't want to set it up in my garage, right? Also, the extension cord is so you can plug it directly into the appliance/s you want to run, right?I've always wondered if I needed one. Aww... Love the puppy cameos too!!!

Great Info. Question: I know a Washer and Dryer may be the last thing people are concerned with but in the event that power is out for weeks - it will be necessary. So when calculating the wattage needed - is it necessary to include both washer and dryer in the total or only the one using the highest power since you probably will NOT run both at the same time?
@Inariusclaimedthethrone

CanesFan65 you need the totals for each ones surge and running watts. If you only run one at a time that’s all you need to worry about

Excellent video and info. We have a couple of generators but our favorite is our Champion 3400 Duel Fuel Inverter Generator. The inverter generator uses less fuel because the engine is variable speed with usage. Plus they are very quiet because they are enclosed.

Didn’t use your calculator yet, but how do you account for surge not all happening at once? Do you add up all the surge wattage and then multiply by say 50% to account for that? I plan on adding an interlock switch to my electrical panel which is dirt cheap compared to full blown transfer switch with separate circuit breakers. This then allows me to decide which circuits I want activated without the bother of untold extension chords. I will drill a hole through an outside wall and add a weather proof outside outlet close to my generator location. I plan on using a professional electrician for electrical work as DYI electrical work is out of the question for most home owners myself included.

We are in California and just got a champion 6250 start watts/5000 running watts series I can’t tell if it has a 50 watt plug on it it says 120/240 above still trying to figure it out. We just used it I bought 2 14 gage extension cords and powered the fridge tv internet and devices so far easy to use and start did the first 5 hour oil change. Our power went back on today but there suppose to shut it off on oct 29th and when ever there done inspecting the lines. I guess it’s going to be the new normal out here.

We were just without power for a week after Isaias and I had my friend's Generac 5500 and it ran my a/c and fridge and television and microwave and some lights for several hours at a time. I turned it off after the nightly news and put more fuel in the next day. We had a storm 8 years ago where we were out of power for 10 days during the winter and it ran my heat and television and microwave and fridge. Both storms, so many trees were down that we couldn't get to gas stations. What I am saying is that I wouldn't get one below a 5500. My carpenter LOVES Predator from Harbor Freight. I am looking at getting a 9000 of theirs for less than $800. I am also looking at solar, the Titan has a payment plan where I could get 3 or 4 batteries and it would be $166 per month for a few years but that powers by solar, car or plug-in and is quiet. This storm people spent a week in 90-degree heat or have their pipes burst. The storm where the power was out 10 days, my friend spent as much money on a hotel as she would have for a generator. Plus, she had her pipes burst. She ended up spending 3 times the money and then bought a generator and she finally used it this storm and was so happy.

Came across this this morning, pretty good video and it was smart down grading in size. Most people can get by with far less than 5k watts and 2.5K to 3k is probably ideal. I've run a Yamaha 2800 inverter for years on propane. I get lights, two computers, refrigerator, freeza , coffee, toaster and a 1/2 hp sump pump. The sump pump pushes it. You have to think fuel time and what happens when everything is out. A #20 for me last sixteen hours, I have two plus a #100.

Hi doc I bought this generator in March. I haven’t needed yet but I run it every 3 weeks to a month for maintenance. I was a little skeptical about buying a champion but the reviews seemed to be very positive. I’m impressed with this unit so far it seems to be made well especially for the price. Good luck with it and hopefully you made out ok with the storm.

Interlock is a great Idea,easy to install and safer than a direct backfeed.. A lot of people think of having a generator as running all or nothing or too expensive. Look and what actually need to get you through your fridge, a few lights maybe a furnace in cold weather states.

I like the fact that you are thinking minimal and basic survival. I run a much larger unit that is heavy and a gas guzzler, even though I added a propane tank in the back yard with a line for the generator. But I gotta keep mom cool during these FL power outages, for her health issues.

I saw where you place your generator. Where is your “ground” rod? Also, this close to the house, aren’t you concerned about carbon monoxide getting into the house. I use to run my unit, during storms, close to the house but kept having the CO meter go off. There were no nearby windows, but it may have gotten in through the eaves. But I placed the unit under a carport. Be careful. I am working on a “hardened” generator shed that will not blow away in a hurricane.

I use a 7'x7' pop up canopy. When I run my gen I like to plug a fan into it to assist with airflow so by no raising the canopy high I get plenty of airflow but no rain, even when it is blowing hard. I just steak the corners. I do not set up until after hurricanes have passed but staking this down it has withstood 30 MPH gusts. I have found the key for me is to not set it all the way up or the wind catches it. When your putting out 240 V, 50 Amp rain/water is a bad idea.

Refrigerator, Furnace, and Well Pump.. Those are the "needs" when you live in the country. I have a manual transfer switch I installed. I have more than the above connected, but they are listed as optional. The fridge is priority 1, furnace(forced air)is priority 2, and the well pump is priority 3 - as needed. We only will turn the well pump on as we need it. You can easily run all that stuff with a 3500w unit.. Fuel consumption on a 3500w unit vs a 5000w unit is about 35-40%less as the motor is smaller. If you don't need the bigger unit, stay with the smaller ones just for the sake of conserving fuel. Fuel cans are priceless. Try to always have at least one full 5gal can on hand. If you're the type that obsesses over gas blended with ethanol cocking over everything to do with your fuel systems- then put yourself on a rotation to dump that 5gallons in your car every few weeks, and refill your can with fresh gas... I've used gas that has sat for several months many times, and have had no issues. If you read the signs on the pump they say "MAY" contain up to 10% ethanol. I maintain several types of engines from my weed eater, to my 1971 Mercury outboard, to my Truck.. The only time I've had any type of fuel issues is when a gas can inadvertently got left outside, and somehow got water in it... The leftover fuel from my 2-stroke Mercury outboard will sit in my shed through the freezing winter until sometime in April when I put my boat back in the water where it will fire right back up.. Same goes for everything else. Don't let the gas fester in the carb bowls. Cut the fuel supply off, and let the motors burn whatever is in the system off. You'll never have issues starting- months down the road...
