Thank you Gillette!!! Had it not been for that brow beating lesson on toxic masculinity I never would have come here to witness this epic video on how to actually shave like a real man! Thank you, Mr. Abrams, for this great tutorial. I'm now a straight razor man for life!
@pattyorigami
@pattyorigami 5 лет назад
@Old Iron That's pretty cool about your razors! I finally got my first straight razor, strop, and shave soap in the mail and I was all gung-ho to dive in. But I had an awful first shave. Either the razor I got wasn't quite sharp enough, I didn't lather up enough, I didn't soak my face beforehand enough, or a combination of things. So for now I'll be ordering a whet stone and learning how to properly sharpen my blade and try again in a few days!
@pattyorigami
@pattyorigami 5 лет назад
@Old Iron Thanks for that info. I did, indeed strop before hand, at least 20x on the cotton part and about 50-60x on the leather. The soap I got was Colonel Conks and it was difficult to get it to lather. I have to admit that I got frustrated and cheated. I tried some Barbasol after a bit of painful shaving with the other. But even though that made the glide better, it still wasn't cutting the hair. Thanks to your input I can rule out the pre-shave soak and it seems, indeed, that the razor just isn't sharp enough.
@pattyorigami
@pattyorigami 5 лет назад
@Old Iron Oh, I only used the Barbasol out of frustration in case it was the lather that was my problem. Believe me, when I get it sorted out I plan not to cheat in the future. I confess that I did opt for a cheap razor since I have a tight budget. The brand of razor I got is Zertone. It seemed pretty sharp when I got it, but since it's my first straight razor I don't have anything to compare to. I'll try the method of shaving thin slices of the shave soap off and see if that helps me get a better lather. But first I'll be looking into having my razor sharpened or sharpening it myself to see if that improves matters.

@@pattyorigami it's not the soap. I broke a bar of Safeguard in half and shaved with it in my mug. Not great but worked. It's the BLADE. It's not the right sharpness. Sounds like you might be over-stropping.

I'm actually so happy to hear that simply spanning the learning process over a few days is fine. I ended up doing the learning process for the same problem I was having today (in that my Adam's apple sticks out pretty far from my otherwise tight skin that makes a dip in the skin). I did pretty well everywhere else compared to last time, but was so focused on those two spots that I was getting frustrated. Now that the obvious has been pointed out, I'm content with learning bit by bit until I can finish my shave with my straight. P.S: I'm happy I am going from a safety razor to this, because angle is very important.

There are multiple ways of holding in. Some people do three fingers on the top of the tang, thumb under, scales up, and last finger on the tail. Others use two on the tang, scales, second last finger on the tail and baby finger free. But that is just for the shaving down part. You rearrange completely for the back strokes. Personally, I'd suggest you try what works best for you and think more about the angles and skin stretching. The placement of the fingers is secondary to that.

Great video, I wish I had watched this morning first. I shaved with a cut-throat for the first time today, and although it may not be a _perfect_ shave, I managed to get my whole face (all the parts that get shaved, anyways) with only one minor nick. I have a hard time using my left hand, and so it was awkward shaving my left side, but I'm going to practice the techniques you showed here. The most difficult place I found is on my throat to each side of my adam's apple, but that's the same when shaving with a safety razor or even back when I used cartridge razors.

You'd be surprised at how well these can be for people with sensitive skin. Some dermatologists recommend single blade, whether straight or safety, for people who regularly get razor bumps or razor burn. It might be good for you as well.

The first time I used a straight razor with a shaving brush and soap, I was surprised how such a light touch could give me a smooth shave. You're really just removing the soap and the hair comes with it.

Thanks for the education. I have some work to do on my razor to get it shave ready. I made some mistakes with it that I have to correct now. Some new stones on order.

Thank you so much Lynn! I just bought my first kit and, although I read a tutorial, SEEING it done was definitely needed. You explained everything very well and I loved your added tips/tricks, you've no doubt acquired over years and years of straight edge shaving. Well, with your wisdom and training I''m off to shave for the very first time with a strait edge razor! Wish me luck and thanks again brother!

Great advice and technique for beginners. Liked and subbed.Only "complaint"- can't see what you are doing below the camera line, would like to see how/what you are explaining. But great video none the less. Thanks!

Thank You for this video. I can do this now! I finally got a good straight razor but when I tried to shave with it, I thought I had wasted my money, or more likely that I just did not know how to do it. After watching your video here, I have been able to shave with it. The key, and I would never have figured this out, is to keep the blade dry! As you say, you've gotta learn to use your tools. When I just want to touch up my neck a bit I do a dry shave with it and I can actually see the whiskers flying off!! I'm waiting to get a strop now. Thanks again Mr Abrams for teaching. You are a good teacher.

Thanks for the great breakdown ! Just got my first straight razor last week after years and years of electric razors , disposable razors, etc. Really enjoying my Dovo Bismarck so far, and trying to figure out how to get the most out of a shave. I’m excited to try out many of the techniques you displayed in this video. Thanks again, Cheers!

Thanks for the video tutorial! I am planning on forging some straight razors soon, and decided to learn with a production razor first. Hopefully, now that I know more, I won't look like I caught a flying cat with my face in the near future!

Thank you for making this video. The tips you provided helped. I tried straight razor shaving for the first time today. I did cut myself a little but it didn't deter me. The extra level of control and focus involved definitely takes shaving to another level. Kind of like driving manual transmission.
