What is the BEST HYBRID Camera in 2024!? ...and before I get rolled in the comments, I know many would not consider the ZV-E1 a hybrid camera because of its 12mp sensor. Yet, I have taken thousands of pictures with the ZV-E1 and I think its an underrated device for photography, and its one of the best video cameras on the market. However, does its video quality make up for its low megapixels? Is the A7Cii, which is a far superior photography camera, missing some key features to make it a reliable video camera? Are all hybrid shooters split 50/50 video to photo!?

Just Remember if you need to be able to use a flash, the ZV-e1 will not sync with the flash above a 1/30 shutter speed

@BrianCatalano I don't even shoot log, dynamic range and quality is basically the same a7iii and up, only difference for me when I upgraded was the framerate and colour, shooting slowmo with active stabilisation makes handheld usable

I have had my ZV-E1 for over a year now and I have been able to capture amazing videos and photos! No regrets at all ! If in the future Sony release another Hybrid Camera that has the Low Light and Dynamic Active Stabilisation capabilities of the ZV-E1 I would be sold !

Just bought the Zve1 for 1400 dollars and I’m beyond happy with it. No over heat on my daily use so far. 10/10. I already own a a7c so if I ever need the more high quality pictures,… I will use my a7c.

Holy smokes, that slow-mo shot of you running with the pool toy was WAY worth watching the video for lol. Secondly was that 2000 ISO vs. 2000 ISO test! I've seen what a higher res sensor can do with making noise finer in video, but this side by side really goes far to sell it over that stiff competition. I still miss my a7C mark 1 still, and have a soft spot for the "C" cameras. For me, all day the a7CII. It's still the only camera that would have me go back to full frame! I have no idea what lens you're bringing, but have a killer trip man. This video was great, as usual! Watching that Ermia video now, this guy is a solid cinematographer 👀.

I also ended up selling the a7cii and took advantage of a great deal on the ZVE1 when it was on sale. The skin tones captured by the ZVE1 are significantly better, reducing the need for extensive adjustments to greens and oranges compared to the A7CII. Additionally, I found myself spending excessive time denoising A7Cii images and footages, stabilizing them, and constantly facing storage challenges. With the ZVE1, there is remarkable flexibility that allows me to capture moments whenever and wherever I desire.

Ahhh... Thank you Oliver! It took me longer than I hoped but feels good to downsize my camera set-up! As for the lens... It's actually my first fun zoom that I can use travelling or on client shoots!

First, the online hate for the S9 will not settle down - it’s just a crappy camera. Second, glad you decided to keep the A7Cii. It is the better all-rounder and perfect for travel. Also, one feature you failed to mention that the A7Cii has that the ZV-E1 does not is Flexible Exposure Mode! If you are constantly switching between stills and video, it makes a HUGE difference. I would argue that feature is more important than Dynamic Active Stabilization. Lastly, I shoot almost exclusively in 1080p on my A7Cii and the footage looks great! The only caveat (which I don’t think you mentioned) is that HD 120p is only 8-bit so best to not shoot in SLOG3 when in that mode. Really enjoyed this video - and appreciate the time you took to make it. Have a great trip!!

I totally agree with the s9 reactions... It's like reviewers maybe slightly overhype a camera, which is understandable but it's somewhat transparent that there's a bias there, and the audience overcompensates to that lack of objectivity by piling on hate... And then both sides forget about the back and forth, clear eyed people actually get to test the camera out. This has massively happened, in my opinion, to the zve1... And thank you, you added a bunch of stuff here that I did fail to mention. I need you to proof read my scripts going forward as I often publish a video and immediately realize I missed a huge spec or detail! Thanks again!!

Nice skin on that! I have a similar dilemma - I upgraded from the a7iii to an a7RV and love it, but for some reason I recently got an a6700 and I’m not sure why!😆. Not sure I should really keep it, they’re actually quite similar but I like the option of doing 61mpx.

Thank you... I have to wrap all my Sonys with alphagvrd skins to give them personality! So, a couple thoughts: I'm envious of both your RV and 6700 as 61mp and video specs, screen, etc... are a dream! And then I personally, 8/10 times, choose an APSC camera as my quick pick up and shoot camera because of the size of the lenses, so I get it. However, what's most interesting is that the A7RV in crop mode is the a6700 (26mp). This is unconfirmed by Sony, but I believe that's how that sensor was developed... So it's possible that you already have your two cameras in one the one body, and if I were you, I might consider selling the a6700 to buy glass. Unless, you love the range finder style compact body, then you could sell both and get the A7CR. I know this is unsolicited advice and I completely get why you would keep both too and all that being said, if I were you, I might just do the same...and why not as I'm still envious of your gear! Feels like I'm always tinkering with my set up with hopes that I'll find peace with my camera combos... But I think that's just naivete on my end!

@@BrianCatalano - thanks for the reply, but yes! While it’s not a money issue, I don’t like to waste money on another camera. That’s the realization I came to; I already have a great hybrid 26mp in my a7RV! I thought the more compact size would come in handy, but once you add a baseplate and a good size lens it just doesn’t seem like it’s that much more compact. Now, I really don’t do video, but I do want to have that capability if I need it. I am still within my return window so there’d be no $$ penalty, but there may be times I want a backup.

Hey Brian, last year I struggle a lot to choose between the 2 and finally picked up the A7CII, but now a year later... whats my feedback ? I choosed the A7CII for the 33MP so I can crop a lot in the video to get different types of shot and video reframing without losing quality BUT The big big downside is the stab. Really... Now one year later, Im starting to looking again for the zv-e1. I definitely miss the dynamic stab and the recording red light... 4K120 ? not really, yeah i am into "quality image" but come one, who can tell the difference between HD120 and 4K120 on RU-vid. I also thought I would use the A7CII for 4K streaming without overheating but again.... who gives a fuck about streaming in 4K. Nice light, nice lense and the zv e1 can handle a streaming without problem. I would love to see the same video shot side to side from a7cII and zve1 and crop into the image at 50-100 and 150% to see the quality difference. And I also cant find the information about rain and zv e1, does the internal mic can be sensitive to rain ? I mean on the A7CII there is just a hot shoe so no issues. see you !

I don't get all that, and your dilemma, hence making this video... The answer, now that you phrase it like that, is for the A7Cii and the zve1 to have a baby, some middle ground of specs... which may be the next generation of the fx3 and then zve1ii. Other than that iso test where I cropped in up to 800%, I haven't compared them in an outdoor environment in that way, but the results are what convinced me in the end, the images were remarkably similar... As for picking up weather like that, I'd probably consider a field recorder or the DJI mic 2s as the in camera mics probably wouldn't do well in the rain. I'll be curious what you decide in the future... Keep me updated!

@@BrianCatalano Sorry for the misunderstanding. When I said ‘I would like to see the same video to compare the quality on a cropped image,’ I meant I would like to see a clip with the same shot and settings, then crop into the image to see if there’s a significant difference between 12MP and 33MP. I often crop into my videos to create different shots from the same clip. Hope that makes it clearer. Do you really think the stabilization on the ZV-E1 isn’t that much better? I often do pan on my A7CII, and I always have bad wobling in the corner. Your videos are really cool mate !

Oh yeah, that makes sense... And you are right, I should have done a better test like that. I will say, as it's not a surprise, but punching in on the A7CII is a fair amount better. Yet, I don't tend to crop in that much. Surprisingly though, on my zve1 and fx3, I do use clear image zoom a lot because of the zoom rocker, and I'm never thinking that the results are bad. I think this is partially because most times I'm watching content for myself or for my clients on our phones, so for that reason, 1080p is more than good enough. I've also heard this happens in Hollywood movies more than we know, is that they crop in all the time, even on super 35 sensors and blown up in a theater, most people never notice... So I think within reason, cropping in on both cameras is doable but the advantage will go to the A7Cii. As for stability, yes the dynamic stabilization on the zve1 is leaps better, but know that it is achieving this look by also cropping in about 1.3 to 1.4 times on that 4.2k sensor... So you are losing resolution and if you pan side to side with dynamic stabilization, it may get a bit jumpy. So I always try to pan rather slowly. However, with a straight vlog, with your face centered and you're walking and talking, the zve1 is the best Sony camera! That being said, the A7Cii is so much better than the original A7C that I'm content with its active stabilization, and personally I don't notice the warpy corners that much. Well I have been changing my setup and honestly could not justify having both an a7CR and a ZV-E1. As amazing as the ZV-E1 is, the a7CR does everything I need and especially since I added the Osmo Pocket 3 which honestly is plenty for my run and gun video needs outside of a studio situation. Just returned the ZV-E1. Loved the video Brian!

Contrary to popular belief, the ZV-E1/A7Siii/FX3/FX6 isn't actually cleaner if you use the second base ISO unless the shutter speed and aperture make that good lighting. Yeah, it's cleaner, IF you can use aperture or shutter priority mode or use an ND filter. It's a lot cleaner just using the camera at the ISO that makes your exposure correct.

@@astartup I definitely understand your point and generally agree with you. However, I will say that especially in slog3 at 12800 vs 10000, it is dramatically cleaner no matter how you've exposed the shot because of sonys proprietary noise reduction within the software... I have no idea how precisely they are doing it, but I'm sure if you record prores externally you could replicate the noise reduction in resolve. That all being said, you are right, it is a lot less noticable than in the example I gave in the video, in S-Cinetone at 2000 ISO...and it's always recommended to boost the light in your scene as opposed to just cranking the ISO.

zve1 is way better for video. 4k60 no crop and 4k120 is genuinely important features that are crucial to make nice videos. but i do wish the zv had more than 12mp, its really too low

Great video, thanks. ZV-E1 the goat. Just that dang screen sucks haha if it had an evf it be a no brainer. I could tell which camera I think! A7c 2 has a slight green cast I can never unsee. Zve1 just shows real life haha.

I ended up selling my ZV-E1, as I mainly shoot photos vs video (my main is A7RV). I will be taking my A7Cii to SE Asia in a few months. I've gone many lens configurations as I need to pack light. I decided to go with the kit zoom and deciding on a small prime like Viltrox 20mm (& maybe another F2 prime). That being said, I think the A7Cii is a better choice is every way - from the EVF, 33 mp (that incl the latest AI AF), Ergonomics and even the silver version is far aesthetically pleasing! Also, I personally like crispy 7K downsampled video (you can always add a mist). The dual gain 33 mp sensor (in S-Log3) is no slouch either. * Also, for my trip, I'm actually planning on using the Pocket 3 for most video opportunities vs A7Cii. Lastly, I mention a few things. I just found a base plate/pinky grip on Amazon for the A7Cii that you can hide an AirTag in (genius). Also, you should check out Victor Laforteza YT. He recently made the move to the A7Cii (for all the same reasons).

I love that your journey to finding the perfect camera set up sounds as wild as mine! I actually now think you may have it (as far as camera bodies)... So you have the A7RV, the A7CII, and the Pocket 3!? You pretty much have the best of all worlds there... I also just picked up the pocket3 too, almost as a replacement for the zve1. I haven't used it yet in a professional setting (real estate) but I'm about to. I'm excited for how easy it is to use but obviously worried that it's not going to compare as well to the zve1 on a gimbal of course, but so far it's surprised me with how close it is! Now, the next hunt is the perfect travel lens... I'm so frustrated that with all these Sony lenses and third party manufacturers pumping out products that no one has thought to make a better compact zoom lens, like the kit. Honestly, a telescoping 24-50 f/3.5-5.6 wouldn't be that much bigger than the current kit, but I'd love to have something like that... That's why I always reach for my Nikon Zfc with the kit lens (pancake 24-75) for my quick travel camera. The whole thing is so cool and compact, and still way vibier than the silver A7C, so why can't we get more zoom lenses to pair with the A7C bodies! Ok rant over... Appreciate you always sharing your thoughts and getting me to think, and now you get me fired up to keep shopping for more gear that I don't need!! Sincerely though, thanks again! @@BrianCatalano It would be awesome to see an updated kit lens, but I think it's not a priority. TBH, I think this lens is under rated as it does a lot for its size. That being said, I'm toying with going even more compact for travel - have you thought about the 6700 (or ZV-E10ii) & Sigma 10-18 2.8 + 18-50 2.8 (these zooms are less than 3"). Just a thought...

@@stkuj yes, you are right on, it's not a priority for anyone to build that type of lens for full frame... That's why I do like APSC for traveling. I have considered the a6700 as the sensor is amazing, but honestly after playing with my Nikon Zfc, I'm tired of boring cameras (design wise) but I want a flip screen, so I'm also looking at the Fuji xs20 as it's a great video camera as well! Might rent that first though... You consider APSC?

@@BrianCatalano Yes! Definitely for travel crop TBH might be a better way to go. Another thought, is to use something like the Sigma 18-50 and A7Cii in crop mode.

I kept the a7cii too. I even used it on multiple client shoots. Sold the ZV-E1 and a7siii. 😊

Woah, you went all in on the A7Cii then as well... There's something gratifying about downsizing gear, even though I still constantly think about different ways I would be using the zve1 now, but I did just pick up the pocket3 as a substitute b-cam for it.

As always you make the best camera videos. Since everyone always talks about 4K but most vloggers (which these cameras are geared for) shoot in 1080P - which one shoot better 1080P and what are they oversampled from ?

Thank you so much!! That's interesting...and you're probably right. I usually only shoot in 4k but I probably don't need to most of the time! I'm not really sure how the downsampling is working from the 7k in the A7Cii to the 4.2k on the zve1...to get to there 1080p. Yet, both are fantastic in 1080p! Thanks again!!

@@mohamadrezanosratpoor5085 I personally don't like that lens (it's older and doesn't perform very well) and generally don't shoot in 50mm very often. Yet, I also know a lot of people who love it... There's going to have to be some trial and error to find a focal length that you like. I have Tamron's 20-40... And recommend their 28-75. For prime's I like 35s or 85s... Or might even prefer a 50 f1.4. There are also newer versions made by third party lens manufacturers like meike who make a 50 f1.8. might be worth exploring that option too. I also recommend the kit lens, the 28-60 to buy with the camera. It's a great beginner lens for the price!

Finally, omg...You didn't disappoint! This was an incredibly GREAT comparison. I'm always thinking about the a7c2 versus the zv-e1 because I actually thinking of picking up one or the other this winter when I travel to the US. I think the ZV-E1 suits me more since I have the a74. I also loved my A7s3 so much, so the ZV is for me. I guess since you have the Fx3, maybe the ZV-E1 is a bit redundant for you, so your choice makes sense. If I didn't have the A74, your comparison definitely sold me on the A7c2! Super great video! Please give us more, more consistently. I always say how your production value is TOP TIER!

@@francoismarc3 ahhh, thank you so much! Funny enough, even with my FX3 or because of my FX3, I just booked a job where I now wish that I still had my zve1 as my gimbal b-cam. Yet, I literally just purchased the pocket 3, so I might use that as my gimbal b-cam which I think your videos have helped convince me too!
